    Did Nomad Really Get Fired?

The anger on this board is only outweighed by the general ignorance of corporate responsibilities vis a vis communications. What do you expect a corporate entity to provide in terms of information on employees being released? Have you never worked in a corporate environment or had employees (both good and bad) you were personally and professionally responsible for? To say anything would be unwise and could not possibly benefit the firm. The vitriol towards Nomad is hard to understand. He's' a little bit of a nerdy dude, but he clearly loves the sport. Not everyone is physically / mentally built to be a competitor. So what? A large dose of anger management and general personal awareness could benefit the discourse here.

Why not? At Rec Hall. Charity event with proceeds going to fight child sex trafficking: Lee vs Gilman; Oliver vs Retherford; Yianni vs Lee; Lewis vs Nolf; Cox vs Taylor; Parris vs Cassar; PD3 v Nickal; Gable vs Snyder. There’s your card. Book it.

This is a really unfair advantage for Dake. He is getting younger and younger while Chimizo maybe close to 39 before they actually wrestle.

Downey = eyeballs and clicks, no way would Flo drop him from the card. I'm also hoping Pletcher gets "sick" with the flu last minute and oh no, and the match with Caldwell is about to be cancelled, Darrion's just standing there at center mat flexing... but wait!! Who is -- what's that entrance music playing? Who's walking towards the mat in camo warmups?? Is that -- DEAR LORD IT'S BRENT METCALF!!!

    Did Nomad Really Get Fired?

The short "just the facts ma'am" version: A couple of the women's national team members stated on twitter that they were offered a match on the 7/25 card, but that it ($$) was waaaaay less than what the men were getting. PD3 came on and said (paraphrasing) that he would pay to watch women and greco, but the average fan would not. This started a little bit of back and forth on the topic. PD3 started taking it a little past expressing his opinion on why the women aren't being offered more, and started taking personal shots, at one point making what could be considered a threat toward one of the women. He eventually posted a screenshot of a typed apology. Salata was one of the women involved in the dialogue. UWW Creative (a paradoy twitter account, thank you JB) retweeted one of her tweets with a comment about her being on fire, and she responded that is nothing, just wait until I show FLO about one of their employees texting the women telling them they should post more bikini pics. The next day NJRTC announced they had released PD3, PD3 tweeted that he was withdrawing from the card since they didn't have any women or greco matches, and Flo announced he was no longer on the card. Willie Saylor tweeted that there was more to PD3 than just the tweets, and he could be in big trouble. Pat Mineo tweeted that Nomad had been fired. Everything else (including the Saylor and Mineo tweets) is pure speculation.

Not to completely miss the point of the subject, but why is everyone freaking out on Flo on social media? As a company the bottom line for them is making money. They obviously have access to viewership numbers on everything they film live and videos they post. If they see that they don’t get the same hits on women’s matches as they do men’s matches, then it’s not their moral responsibility to offer the same contract to the women. Dake vs. Chamizo is going to be a crazy viewership draw. Whether it’s right or wrong, the women just don’t have a headliner that can compete with that strictly from the standpoint of generating views. I think people miss the mark on Flo’s goal for the sport. Their goals are centered around making money and growing their platform. Hence why you can’t pay monthly and have to pay a yearly fee. If they grow the sport in the process then that’s great. I feel like people really need to change their perspective on what Flo brings to the table for wrestling. It’s a platform to give us as fans easier access to watch matches, replays, documentaries, etc. But at the end of the day they have bottom lines and it’s about revenue. As for women’s wrestling, I’m a huge fan. I love watching our senior level girls. Helen Maroulis’ run to gold in Rio is one of my favorite US Olympic moments. But that being said, it’s not Flo’s job to promote women’s wrestling as much as the community wants it to be. The onus for doing that is on USA wrestling, UWW, AWW, NWCA, and the women themselves. PD’s initial comments were insensitive, but then he started getting flat out childish and disrespectful in some back and forth with Sarah Hildebrandt and Jacarra Winchester. The dude just doesn’t know when it’s time to stop.

    Taylor vs. Sadulaev

A few quick points to consider: First of all, Taylor has in fact beaten Cox and fairly soundly in one of the three matches they've wrestled. The last of the three matches was clearly marked by controversy as well as Cox's waterlogged body and the the small Oxbow lake that formed on the mat via his sweat glands. Secondly, I didn't say a win would prove that Taylor is the best P4P in the world, though he might have a reasonable case to make about that if he did. Thirdly, the transitive property arguments in wrestling and other sports or areas are complex and tricky at best and usually don't always pan out by any measure. Dake has both beaten and lost to Cox and also both beaten and lost to JB. Cox has won several championships at non-Olympic weights, as has Dake. JB and DT have won at (arguably tougher) Olympic weights. DT has hammered guys that Cox and Dake have barely beaten—e.g., Hasanov from AZE in the case of Dake. Fourthly, my main questions has to do with how well DT fares or would fare in relation to, first, Snyder, and secondly, Sadulaev. Fifth, Taylor seems to have improved markedly in the last few years (even if perhaps Cox and Dake have as well). And, finally, yes, a round robin tourney (if someone could pull it off; meaning put it together) would be great, especially in the (almost zero wrestling) World of Covid.

    "Study Hall Commandos"

Heard this as a kid in the mid-60’s. Used to describe someone who was easy to beat. On a related note, to be called a fish was an insult, if you had actually wrestled a while. True Story: The summer before my senior year of high school, I lost to a kid in a local tournament. He was very big and strong, and he handled me. I was really never in the match. Fast forward a few months and we were to meet in the finals of a Christmas tournament. My teammates came to me and said they’d heard the guy laughing at me and calling me a fish. He told one of them “I beat him up last summer.” To further inflame me, the guy’s girlfriend had already snatched the weight bracket off the gym wall, since it was a foregone conclusion her man was going to win When I heard this, I was duly insulted and became furious at being made fun of. I resolved to wrestle so hard that he’d have to kill me to beat me. When the match started, I tied up with him, locked my hands behind his head and pulled and squeezed my face into his as hard as I could. It hurt like hell and I know it really took him by suprise...as it was not a legit wrestling move...I was just trying to inflict pain and show him he was in for a battle. After several long seconds of the George “The Animal” Steele treatment, during which I heard him cry out in pain, I pushed him away and saw terror in his eyes. He clearly sensed that I was either crazy or on some type of drug, or both! I went after him and just physically beat him up until I pinned him in another minute or so. I had no business beating this guy, but he did to me what my coach always told our team to never do...insult or demean an opponent to the point that they became enraged and juiced up with “crazy man strength.” This guy went in to play several years in the NFL. I’ve always wondered if he learned as much that night as I did!

Goodale on the season to come

There is no conflict with March Madness. The timing of the NCAA wrestling tournament allows it to get a ton of tv coverage because ESPN does not have basketball rights. Moving to late April means competing for ESPN air time with playoff basketball and Major League Baseball. There are reasons to move the season. March Madness is not one of them.

    Does Myles Martin have chance?

I hope so because he's a really good guy with tons of potential. It's kind of funny when you think about it that everything at 86 was really kicked off because Martin totally choked to PD3 at the US Open last year and set off a whole chain of events. I mean think about it... if Martin wins then Downey probably doesn't earn a spot to Final X, doesn't get on the world team, doesn't run his mouth and set up a PPV match with Taylor, doesn't kick off a huge women's wrestling movement, and Nomad keeps his job and asking for bikini pics. Literally everything is Myles Martin's fault for 88 seconds of not finishing the job.

    Carlton Haselrig - RIP

KCMO2 asked about Carlton Haselrig's two college losses. I believe that they were both to Dean Hall of Edinboro, one in the semi-finals of the DII nationals when Haselrig was a freshman. (Haselrig took 3rd and Hall won.) In 1987, Haselrig defeated Hall for the DI title (with Edinboro evidently having moved to DI that year). Haselrig also had one tie during his junior year (1988). Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of that wrestler. There were many factors that led to the "Haselrig Rule. " I was coaching DIII in the late 1980s so I heard all the arguments, though my memory is a little rusty. Some DI coaches wanted to eliminate DII and DIII wrestlers from advancing in order to allow for more DI wrestlers to qualify. Some DI coaches argued that, in no other NCAA sport with separate divisions, did athletes from DI or DII advance to the DI nationals. Some DI coaches (and even some DIII coaches) did not believe that DIII wrestlers were competitive at the DI nationals. Haselrig came along and heated up the debate when he won back to back to back DI titles, but the discussion had started before he came on the scene. I think that the 1988-89 season was the last year that DII and DIII champions had full automatic qualification for DI nationals; however, a few of the DII and DIII champions competed at the 1990 DI nationals under a grandfather provision when advancement was eliminated (and I think one DII champion--Dan Russell--competed in the 1991 DI nationals.)

Flo was started as a somewhat romantic notion operated out of a van and funded by donations. It grew through the efforts of the Brothers Flo and others including Bader and Joe, eventually adding Willie, who was fresh off of being named wrestling media guy of the year. Willie brought to Flo the editorial chops and rankings presence it did not have before then. Will later brought in Pyles, Holmes, and others. Then the Flo brothers (understandably) wanted to monetize and allowed VC in. With VC came lawyers, one in particular by the name of Paul Hurdlow has been particularly damaging to Flo. Hurdlow insinuated himself into management and put his imprint on Flo’s culture, and that meant using the lawyer’s tools. Contracts. Non-competes for already-employed people. Lawsuits. Then Flo started suing everyone in sight. From individuals taping their kids at Flo events, to putative competitors, to corporate “partners” (Oklahoma State) to Martin Flo and Willie. No one is safe from Flo’s litigious bent. You wonder why Flo is not given access by many programs? Why they, the biggest wrestling media outlet, have an antagonistic relationship with their fans, wrestlers and coaches? Because people aren’t stupid that’s why. Flo’s sharp practices have not gone unnoticed. One of the few Flo partners remaining is USA Wrestling which (a) is desperate for money and (b) has historically terrible leadership with poor judgment. Flo is indeed a sinking ship, at least in the wrestling realm. Their business model is built on exclusive event rights, and those are dwindling. If USA Wrestling pulls the plug on Flo in favor of CBS/Track, they will be done.

I've been rooting against JB for most of his career, almost entirely due to happenstance. I started following wrestling in 2009 shortly after I started. My first favorite wrestler was Mike Poeta (my dad went to Illinois). First time I saw JB was him beating Poeta in the finals. I'm from Indiana. Andrew Howe was the guy all of my coaches would talk about at practice. Of course JB-Howe was the next big match up in his career. Then I met Rob Koll at a camp and became a Cornell fan. Dake quickly became a favorite. You can see where this is going. As we enter the twilight of his career, it's setting in for me for the first time that I witnessed one of the true "Greats" of the sport. I hope he makes the team and wins a second gold.

My opinion is that I don't enjoy watching women's wrestling. I wouldn't pay to watch it. Men's wrestling is much more exciting to me, personally. I believe the numbers will show that the majority of fans have a similar opinion. Seems like I should get to have that opinion. It may not be diplomatic, nor politically correct - but it's my opinion. In a free country like the US, shouldn't I get to have that opinion and voice it without retribution? Seems like I should. I agree it won't be well received by some, isn't politically correct, and it isn't in the best interest of wrestling - but it is still my opinion. That being said, I don't enjoy watching men's volleyball at all. I find it boring, too. Women's volleyball is so much more fun to watch - both beach and indoor. Hands down better. As both a collegiate wrestler and collegiate and USVBA volleyball player, it seems like my experience gives my opinion at least some legitimacy. I don't dislike women who wrestle or men who play volleyball... I just wouldn't pay to watch either one. What a terrible world it would be if we couldn't voice our opinions, and instead we all were forced to agree on everything.

You know something? Anyone who puts quotation marks around the word "experts" in order to dismiss their, well, expertise, doesn't warrant any more responses. Oh c'mon guys, this is getting ridiculous. I think we all know that the bottom line is that Iowa (or any other school) should be recruiting the best wrestlers available regardless of their skin color. The issue initially raised was that maybe Iowa isn't doing that because of some statistics presented over the past 15 years. Iowa wrestling, with its historical wealth of great black athletes, including national champs, does not deserve to be cast in this negative light (and I am NOT an Iowa fan). Class is a new poster (at least a new name) and he latched on to a volatile topic (race) to get things roiling on the forum. Kudos to him for hitting on a topic that generated six pages of response so far. If any of you truly think that Iowa is somehow not recruiting the best athletes out there, regardless of race, you are living under a rock. The evidence repeatedly cited is a lack of black H.S. state champs in the last 15 years. Fine, but that fact does not embrace at all the fact that the wrestlers themselves are at least 50% of this equation - they may not want to live in Iowa City for four years - no matter who is the coach. Class has laid out one hypothesis and ignored multiple other possible explanations. And six pages worth or responses have taken the bait. I am sure Class is very pleased with himself. Ordinarily I would be pleased with this particular stirring of the pot, but in this highly sensitized racial environment, maybe it isn't the most positive of topics.

    PD3 Signs with SuckerPunch

I don't even see him rising TO Bellator name. Honestly. Pico got signed as a phenom and forgot his roots. Lost 3 easily winnable matches because of it and likely lost a few years of his combat abilities for getting KOd. I see Downey earning a contract, but not having success in Bellator. He is TST(thick solid and tight) so does he make that drop to 185? Or does he go up to 205, where he won't have a power advantage? All this said, I see him forgetting his roots and trying to throw with too many people. I also don't see him giving proper respects to BJJ type grapplers and getting something torn off or put to sleep. He has the grit and power to succeed, I just don't trust his fight IQ until I see it.

LBJ has revolutionized the grossness of anonymity. It used to be just, "you wouldn't say that to his face" which is normally a true statement but a non sequitur because it has nothing to do with the truth of the referenced comment. Not only does LBJ make his living on here attacking one of the few non-anonymous members, but his whole mode of argument is just throwing out meaningless macho nonsense based on him posturing as tough guy...all the while never discussing facts, ideas or wrestling.
