    Validative experiences

In the late 70's early 80's, most youth wrestling opportunities were in freestyle where I lived (Mn). We did have a limited Middle School wrestling season where we typically wrestled 10-12 matches in a season. I think it was 6th or 7th grade and our freestyle club went to a folkstyle tournament in Emmetsburg, IA. That was the first tournament I ever attended that seeded wrestlers. I was like 12-0 or something and was expecting to get seeded first. However, a team of Oklahoma studs, the Tulsa All-Stars or something, came and their kids were sporting records like 46-1 or whatever. I was seeded something like 5th or 6th I think. I got destroyed in the semis and took 4th, I believe. A couple years later at Cyclone Wrestling Camp a kid comes up to me and was like, "I know you. We wrestled in Emmetsburg." He said he had the picture on his wall because he won, and I was on the stand. He said I was the toughest match he had that whole year. We rolled that whole week at camp; he was much better than me and I learned a lot from him. That kid's name was Kendall Cross. Fast-forward to 1992, on a whim while serving in the Marines in Italy, I went to the Olympics in Barcelona. I had acquired some free tickets to the wrestling. Lo and behold, who did I see but Kendall Cross. Later that week, I ran into Kendall and some of the other wrestlers at a drinking establishment off Las Ramblas and introduced myself. Whether he did or didn't remember me, he was gracious enough to pretend he did, and we hung out well into the morning hours, thoroughly dehydrating ourselves in the process. Still have my ticket autographed by Cross, Coleman, Jackson, and some others lying around a scrapbook somewhere.

Good Miron Story: In '92, he was fascinated by the idea of the presidential election debates. He was still learning English but was picking things up quickly; he took an English-Russian dictionary with him everywhere he went and he was learning fast. He watched the first debate between Clinton and Bush intently, taking in as much as he could, asking a lot of questions. "John, what happens next," he asked me when it was over. "Well," I said, "they'll see how they did on this debate and get ready for the next one." "No," he said, digging deep. "What will happen tomorrow?" "Tomorrow?" I asked, a bit puzzled. "Yes, tomorrow, will Bush's army attack Clinton's army? Clinton was very disrespectful. Bush is still president." I realized then what a different world he was coming from. He was almost in disbelief when I told him that there were no armies, no armed forces would attack anyone, they would just get ready for the next debate. Keep in mind he is from Abkhazia, which had declared independence from Georgia, which not long before had declared independence when the USSR split up. Abkhazia and Georgia fought a bloody, horrible war in which his father and other relatives were killed. It was very sobering to see the world through his eyes. Many, many stories like that over the years. He taught me much more than wrestling.

    Conel vs. Nickal

The difference being Caldwell was a better wrestler than Metcalf anyway.

I abhor political discussions on wrestling forums, leave your pro AND anti Trump rhetoric at the door please, but that Miron story should remind all of us here in the USA of just how good we really have it and that we should continue to strive for peaceful discourse on our differing views.

Not sure of what to make of all these odds and %s but I do know wrestling is 90% mental and the other half is physical.

... I had a factual, well-written reply ready to press submit, but it's the truth, so no one will care to read it. Off to Budapest tomorrow.

    NWCA All Star Classic

could just make it a truly unrankable match, ie wrestled under slightly different rules or something. make it like 1-1-1, push out rule, 5 pointer (ippon) ends match or something and give us entertainment and something to discuss albeit with an obvious * beside it in terms of 'actually counting'.

So interesting. He grew up in a completely different environment than anyone I know. His perspective is unique Please share more! He should do a vlog of all of this

    Graham coach Jeff Jordan retires

hey Tobus, as others have confirmed, yes they are bros. Jeff, while not as well known a wrestler as his national champ brother, was an AA himself, 4th in '87 and '88 at 150.

    Conel vs. Nickal

The more intriguing matchup comes 2 days earlier when Conel faces Warner. That match can be interesting as you have a talented freshman with better skills vs a senior with man strength. As far as Conel vs Bo.. this has bonus point written all over it. Would be absolutely shocked if Conel kept it under major Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    WrestleStat has transitioned to 2019

Oh, I don't presume to rank the wrestlers. I'm not qualified. I haven't seen all the wrestlers compete, let alone against each other. It's part of the reason I love NCAAs so much, the unexpected always happens. I didn't see Flo's prediction on Steveson, but I'll definitely check it out today (thanks for the reference, btw). That's a pretty bold pick. He's 18, right? I could MAYBE see him slipping in to the finals like other young hotshots (Snyder, Mocco, etc) but picking him outright to win it all...Bold.

Enjoy! My dream is to make a World or Olympic wrestling tournament outside of the US. I was at The Garden when we hosted the World Freestyle there. This will be a fascinating once in a lifetime spectacle...or maybe not.

Despite the, increasingly desperate, attempts at justification from TWDennis, Bryant and Willis; the fact remains that the American fan is being badly treated and used as a cash cow. Charging a fee for the Worlds when the rest of the world is getting a better feed for free, is nothing other than contempt. I was trained in folk style at a local USAF base in the UK back in the 1990's. My American trainer was very vocal on the failure of US wrestling to back its fans or athletes. Nothing seems to have changed. My sport used to be Judo and I still follow the sport quite closely. Both the international and nation bodies are supportive of its athletes and fan base. Order equipment, videos, books and you get them quick - with USWrestling you wait six months or have to claim back on your credit card. This is the reality and if members of USWrestling made as much effort in improving its service as it does making excuses, then it might become an approachable useful organization.

I would love-- ****ING LOVE-- to support trackwrestling. Dashboard "time-outs" aside, their software is is mostly superior to FloArena. Fantastic database with tournament results that are easily arranged by weight, team, age , etc. FloArena can't even support dual tournaments at this point and Track has been doing it for over a decade. Plus, guys like Andy Hamilton and JB are good dudes to have on board. So, please. Do better, Track. Or at least try.

Unfortunately no, if I were I might actually find your posts amusing. Call it passive aggressive if you want, but it's virtually pointless to argue with you, so I went for a laugh instead. Hopefully your feelings remain intact.

My pick would be - Adam Saitiev (younger brother of Buvaiser Saitiev) considering his extraordinary counter attacks from bottom. No doubt Buvaiser Saitiev as well be a good candidate for Folk after all he is the master of technique !!

    Stoll and Turk

Whether Stoll should have been shot or not does not determine whether Turk is a responsible gun owner. Unless you were there and understand every fact , including Turk's state of mind given how Stoll roused him out of bed, you can't make that call. The cops didn't even think it merited further examination. I won't judge Turk on that.

Kharchla is gonna be 3 or 4 timer

This is like playing chess with a gerbil. Do you understand that a sophomore year is different than a junior year? And both of those are not the same as a senior year? If not, the conversation is pointless; even so, I'm going to go out on a huge limb and assume you do. After his sophomore year, the kid quit cutting weight; Mardigan is absolutely correct, as anyone who knows the kid is well aware of. Are you following? Do I need to go any slower? He is now a senior (that comes after sophomore and junior) and he is staying at 170, which he can make with one decent work out. In this thread, we have been talking about his current weight class--not his sophomore year when he cut too much weight. It's that whole time progression thing--maybe we can get Neil DeGrasse Tyson to explain it to you. I don't know if mental deficiency runs in your family or the Great Maker decided to drop the entire genetic curse on you.
