    Steveson’s Behavior

Unless there was some kind of prior beef between Steveson and Colucci, Steveson's antics were totally uncalled for. I know Steveson is a star and talents like him don't come around very often, but did you ever see Cael act that way? Burroughs? Snyder? Just not necessary to be a great wrestler.

    Steveson’s Behavior

As long as an athlete complies with the rules, I have no objections. A second issue is the culture surrounding folkstyle wrestling. It appears to me to be dominated by moralism, provincial arrogance, Evangelical Christianity, conformity, and a suspicion of emotions. Not everyone’s cup of tea.

I'm not sure if I'd call Stevenson a "villain" at this point. There's a line between being flashy and being an ******* and I don't think he's figured out which side of that line he's going to be on. But I'm with you on not getting behind the whole "wrestling needs villains" mindset. I'm sure Flo gets more clicks when they can put up an article about something a wrestler everyone hates but those clicks are coming from people that are already fans. Nobody extra is going to duals, watching on TV, etc just because they know a wrestler that's known to be an ******* is going to be there.

My perspective is guided by what is best for the team in March and the belief that the field, the brackets, and head to heads can make a competitive team race. With that said I need scorers frontside and backside at all 10 weights and I think the field, brackets, and head to head concern Ohio State the most at 125, 157, 165, and 174. I don't think I am down on Romero, to me he is still an unknown to a degree. If you told me you could have TC at 165 or 174 with Romero at 165 and Smith at 174, I have more confidence or am higher on Smith than Romero with Campbell a known quality. I like the progress Smith has made better from the start of the year til now and if that continues the second half the season it widens that gap without a bigger jump from Romero. Whether the Bucks are fighting for a title or a trophy, points are points and they need wins One way to look at Iowa 96.5 and Ohio State 92 is that if Sponseller beats Morningstar in 2009 then Tom Ryan has two team titles. At the same time tOSU could have qualified a 197 that scores or got a couple more points at 125 (2-2), 157 (0-2), 174 (1-2), or 285 (1-2) or Sponseller beats Sherefy and gets another win in the medal rounds. After Iowa won the title in 2008 by 40 points few considered Ohio State a contender and more so a bridesmaid the following year. Penn State is the heavy favorite, they will more than likely score at least twenty more than iowa, think an over/under of 120 points. If I am Ohio State and Tom Ryan or any title contender I don't quit fighting for a title until the math/results say I can't win. If you can't get first get second, if you can't get second get third, if you aren't going to AA make it to the blood round, give me some wins, give me frontside points, give me backside bonus.

Against Derek White in the start of the season White did no staredown, had no extra-curriculars, and never did anything like turtling up. White just got beat. Stevenson still went to the rope-a-dope dancing. I have no problem with it, but we can't pretend it's all frustration at opponents inactivity or retaliation at opponents trash talk. He's just a guy enjoying himself and putting on a show and trying to be a star. Some like it and some don't. To each their own. But lets not pretend it's brought on by his opponents.

Attempting to answer #6 above... When a program is "spoiled" by having a 4x NCAA Champ, a 4x Finalist/3x Champ, true freshman champ, and 4x AA's, all at the same time, anyone who fills a weight class has expectations that are darn near unreasonable by 98% of the other team's standards. But... these ARE the standards at tOSU AND PSU. If you don't run a high likelihood of AAing, then the fanbase immediately calls that weight class and person as a "hole" in the lineup. Compound that with the heir apparent in Kharchla coming next year, and you have a recipe for "jumping off" the bandwagon. My attempt at logic... in an illogical time...

My perspective is that I enjoy it because I don’t pull for a team with a big enough following to have their own dedicated message board (like Iowa, etc). I like coming here to see a multitude of topics and teams being discussed. And for the most part I’ve had great interactions with everyone on this board as I’m relatively new.

    Bo’s Gesture of Sportsmanship

Bo Nickal has been offering a hand-up to opponents he’s just pinned. He appears sincere while doing so and I haven’t observed any opponents who’ve been offended by this gesture. I think our sport could use more of this; a return to a higher level of outward mutual respect among wrestlers. Dominating an opponent, putting on a show for the fans while displaying respect and good sportsmanship used to be the rule rather than the exception. It starts with parents and coaches. Food for thought.

141: Likewise, I believe in Brock, all of his issues this year can be fixed and he seems big enough for 141. Perhaps he had other stuff he could do better at 133 but he also had a 3rd period gas tank problem down there. 149: Even though speculation about Boo return, G is doing just fine can go hard at 49 and we don't know the full shoulder/whatever issue, perhaps if Boo back 100% he needs to go 57, imo 57 is the big hole in the lineup and points from Shomers questionable 184: I don't see the size as the issue here (just as not with 133, 141, or 149) Jocobe is still wrestling the same and it was not going to work at 174 against top guys, he's got to wrestle to his strengths, given quickness on his feet and how strong he is, why would he try to win a scramble with someone who can scramble, use your strength to take the stale mat and get back on your feet. 197: yeah Geer looks undersized, but has time to adjust to the weight, Weigel can score more points but ... The big question will be are all their "best" guys healthy at end of the year, its good that they have backup options.

    Missouri - '18/'19

Nice breakdown. Coming out of the MAC qualifier, I could easily see us getting 10 through. I would be shocked to see Smith make weight 3 days in a row at nationals, if he is indeed their 125. Punke looked very good at 125 at the South Beach Duals, beating #19 Schroder and losing in SV to #13 Arujau. I could see Elam low AA or go 2 and out at nationals. I'd predict a 4-8 place finish. I think if we max out we could go 3rd, but our 3 true freshmen scare me a bit on the big stage. I find it amusing that Flo has Mizzou at #12 this week.

    Steveson’s Behavior

Plenty of dudes here with a stick up there “you know what” if you ask me. My sophomore year I wrestled a kid in a dual, who had been on my junior high club team. He was wrestling very conservatively with the intent to avoid bonus. I wanted to get him to open up so I crossfaced him HARD. I gave up a point for unnecessary roughness, which was well deserved, he opened up and I went on to secure the major decision. He dropped to 105 and finished second in the state while I went on to win the title at 112. With that said, Gable’s actions are fine.

    Steveson’s Behavior

**** Definitely immature and not classy. However, I think Steveson is just incredibly bored. He loves the limelight and wishes that some team will put out a Hwt. who can challenge him. One of the closest matches so far was the match against #6 Jordan Wood of Lehigh at the South Beach Duals. They have met many times with Steveson winning all but the last match was at least reasonably close 9-4. There is a lot of respect between both Wood and Steveson as they hugged after the match. Steveson is looking for a challenge so he can show how good he really is.

    Steveson’s Behavior

It has ALWAYS been part of a refs job. Teams/wrestlers/coaches can get charged with unsportsmanlike conduct at any time. The refs authority is not just limited to the mat during individual matches.

When did post-match, off-the-mat behavior regulation become part of a referee's job description? I would have thought that's the purview of the coaching staff...oh, wait, that's what happened with Rutgers.

    Steveson’s Behavior

Agreed. As I said in the Bo Nickal thread, our sport needs less UFC/WWE antics. Steveson is very talented, but he's setting himself up for a fall and that fall will come eventually. I agree that his behavior of 4:10 is disrespectful and if I was the ref, I'd have hit him for such. This kid is going to have to realize that he's going to face a lot of opponents who clam up and just try to keep the score close on him. This is what happens to most of the dominant wrestlers (Dake, Steiber, Retherford, etc.) - most opponents won't really open up against them for fear of being completely dominated. He needs to let the ref handle opponents who are stalling. Also, he seems to think it is ok to do things that demean or insult an opponent. Somewhere along the line he was taught this was ok, or he started doing it on his own and his coaches allowed him to do it. I'd say that his behavior will become even worse as he becomes more frustrated with lesser opponents or if he's actually trying to become a WWE-style "villian." It's only a matter of time that public sentiment starts to go against him in a big way, including many Minny fans who will eventually think (I wish he wouldn't act like that) and the refs start calling him out quickly for anything that comes even close to crossing the line of acceptable behavior and sportsmanship. In his defense, he's very young and his maturity doesn't yet match his incredible level of talent. If ever there was a situation in which coaches and mentors should get heavily involved in shaping an athlete's attitude and behavior as much as his actual wrestling ability and technique, this is one. He needs leadership. If he gets it and responds well to it, I believe Steveson could become one of the best ever in our sport. I'm truly hoping this happens.

    Steveson’s Behavior

4:10 was probably the worst offense in this match, but also several instances of gestures/whining because Colucci was stalling (which he was, but some of the time Gable wasn’t doing much either). There may not be any one thing he’s done that’s been egregious, but it certainly seems like a trend at this point. I definitely don’t love it, but it does seem like he kinda wants to be the villain so if it gets more people interested (likely to root against him) then I guess it’s not the worst thing in the world.

OK State at Rutgers will be on Flo. Its listed on the events page, although with so many duals coming up you don't have to click the 'see more' button. We also keep this page dated all year long and keep it pinned as the first event on the event page. Looking forward to the dual. We may have as many as 5 Flo Friends all on site in Jersey!

Agreed mostly. Good post. 2. Agreed. The clock look was amateur for someone as seasoned as Martin. Coaches should've told him to get another takedown and not go for the rideout. He had over 30 seconds left and was scoring almost at will. 4. Hayes isn't AAing at 157 if he wrestles like this. He has to get to try to be offensive. His best position is top. Why not try to get there? If he tries to go takedown for takedown when he is way smaller than everyone, he is going to take more Barone type losses. He is a very good wrestler, but his style is killing me. 5. Seems like they are going to give Malik a shot. It appears to be a bit premature, but they see him in the room everyday against NATO, Pletcher, McKenna, Stieber, etc. Him AAing is possible if he has put on a bit more strength and cleaned up his defense since we saw him last. 6. not sure why everyone is off the Romero bandwagon all of a sudden. He is a redshirt freshman who is borderline top 20. He is unlikely to place this year, but we know he is an excellent athlete and has been working hard. He has a great shot at AAing before the end of his career

After I pinned David Taylor, I’d reach out to help him up but pull my hand back all slick like and run it through my hair, smiling for the crowd.

He stumbled and passed out. The wrestlers weren’t touching each other. Right beforehand, it looks like he bumped his head on the mat but it didn’t look that serious. Could have happened from that, or could be just from exhaustion/dehydration. The two heavyweights were evenly matched and really pushing the pace in a scramble right beforehand. Either way, he stumbled and went completely unconscious. Letting them resume wrestling, even after going through concussion protocol, is irresponsible.

Really enjoy watching the small private schools like Lehigh, Cornell, Harvard, Bucknell, etc.. due to their combination of academics and athletics. West Point, Naval Academy & Air Force are easy to cheer for because when they have an AA it's a true AA. No redshirting, academics are a must and they still have to be great in athletics but they must also participate in the military aspect of the school. Those young men & women that attend one of the military academies are truly special individuals.

    Best High School Team Ever?

this is awesome... I think the Privates that recruit... I.e. Blair... are encouraged to do so, and can do so, due to Tuition fees and what not. Now... in my high school (public, in Ohio), we were damn good in the 90's. My coach definitely "recruited", but it wasn't like how the privates do it. It was more of "wrestle for me and you can wrestled at almost any college you want" type of promise. And... quite frankly, he pulled a few from around the state. It wasn't traditional recruiting though... it was more of the coach being a "known commodity" in the wrestling world, and then the kid saying... wait... it's "ok" academically, it's top notch in wrestling, and the cost of living in that area is pretty low... and the parent saying... sure... my job allows me to do this/make this move... let's do it. I wasn't recruited by this coach... instead, I "grew up" in and was a product of his homegrown "farm system". He introduced the youth wrestling concept there, and the rest was history (started in 3rd grade). Now... I'm middle-aged, fat, out of shape, and a super fan of the sport that I used to be a proud part of!

    Best High School Team Ever?

While I agree, let's not kid ourselves and think public schools don't recruit just as much as private schools. They may not be as good at it but one only has to look in Las Vegas at football players or California in every sport to see that public schools are also on the recruiting bandwagon. Sadly, the days of completely home grown teams may be gone.
