University of Iowa to Change Team Mascot?
SamStall365247 and one other reacted to Perry for a post in a topic
Hot off the presses: The University of Iowa has "officially" elected to replace the pseudo-famous Herky the Hawk mascot after nearly 70 years of history with the school. The new mascot, Doofy the Duck, is set to take over for Herky in 2019 and will be represented on the new team singlets at the prestigious Midlands Open hosted by Northwestern. Despite the tradition that Herky has brought to the school for nearly a century, the community as a whole feels that the new mascot is a better representation of the current nature of the wrestling program. -

6 IOC Weights is another Reason USAW ought to Modify Team Selection Process
wrestlingnerd and one other reacted to Crash for a post in a topic
For elite Tweeners (in the IOC 6 weight format) like Dake, Cox and Green, they are going to be forced to change weight classes in 2020. But in reality, in order to maximize their changes of making the team, each must consider when to make the transition. If they wait until 2020, that eliminates their chance of getting the bye to the OTT trails by virtue of medaling the previous year. At its core, the IOC is at the root of this problem. But USAW cannot force the IOC to add weights. What they can do, however; is take away the bye into the OTT finals. Keep the US Open in place in Olympic years. Give the returning medal winners a bye to the US Open finals. if they win, they also get a bye to OTT finals. If not, no-one gets a bye into the OTT finals. This still provides an advantage to returning medal winners, but not as big of an advantage as exists today. This would ensure 2 events domestically where all the top guys are there (US Open and OTTs) and make it a little more fair for the Tweeners (allowing them to stay at their natural weight in 2019 and having a more fair shot at making the OTT in 2020). -

1 pointKemp has been a vegetarian since 1980, after which he won a world gold and world bronze. Kumar has been a vegeterian since before he won all three of his world/Olympic medals. Lewis became a vegan in 1990, after which time he won multiple world and Olympic golds. Since 1990, he also set the world record in the 100 meter dash; he anchored two world-record-breaking 4x100 meter teams; and he ran the fastest anchor leg in the 4x100 ever officially recorded.

Why do people hate Cael?
TBar1977 reacted to John Morgan for a post in a topic
Hate is a strong word and gets attention as a topic. I would wager very few people actually hate someone else. They may have mannerisms that are annoying, behavior you don't agree with, or beliefs you don't share. Hate? doubt it -
1 pointI remember reading the Easton, Pa newspaper in the early 70s and when it listed match box scores, the term “threw” was often used to indicate a pin. As in... ”Darwin Brodt threw Joe Schmuckatelli - 5:19”

Gable Stevenson will go down as the greatest college wrestler ever
powershouse reacted to tommygun for a post in a topic
How many 133lbers could beat 165 or 174lbers? That’s what Gable does (Snyder did) many matches. Oh, and that dude wrestles like a light weight in my opinion. His ankle pick reminds me of Cael’s too. -
1 pointKemp is an alltime great. I just wonder how his "style" of wrestling would work out today against top guys.
-
1 pointNot to rain on anybody's parade, but I think Nolf would've beaten Dake at 157. Nolf is a lot squirrellier than David Taylor was (Taylor was a fine scrambler..but Nolf is a freak), and I think that gives Nolf a leg up on Taylor (vs Dake).

Gable Stevenson will go down as the greatest college wrestler ever
randyfoxwell reacted to tigerfan for a post in a topic
Surplus of strength? Haha! Do they wrestle against stacks of iron, or do they wrestle against people of similar body weight? Pound for pound, lighter weights are proportionally stronger, generally speaking. There's a big difference between "knowing" a move and performing it when it counts in a match. How many takedowns at HWT are simply variations of "he shoots, I sprawl/go behind"? If heavies were actually hitting any chain wrestling combinations in matches it might be believable. The best heavies in the country are very good wrestlers, no doubt, but there's no way they know (and perform) as much wrestling as the Nolf''s, Retherford's, Lee's, and Hall's of the world. Even if Gable did all of that, it still wouldn't be as impressive as Cael because none of Gable's competition knows how to counter anything remotely like the lower/middle weights do. His competition is comparatively weak. -
1 pointThat's a ridiculous assertion. The difference between HWT and the other weights isn't in a lack of skill, it's in a surplus of strength/beef. Gwiz is probably a better technical wrestler than most the guys who won NCAA D1 titles when he was champ.
-
1 pointAgreed. All I suggested is that he should be in the conversation... but again... this is a two-horses race between the team mates. Even if Hall beats Valencia again, going undefeated, he's not doing this in a "dominating" way. Nolf and Nickal are destroying 90%+ of everyone.

I get what you are saying, but many could have easily said the same about Molinairo in January of 2015.... actually, if someone made a list like this at that time, he almost certainly wouldn't have even been included at all. There will probably be 1-2 similar surprises in 2019/2020. -

So what is up with JO?
bnwtwg reacted to Relentless125 for a post in a topic
In my opinion it actually it is. You took 10-30 minutes to convince your 7 year old that he needed to see JO wrestle and then blame JO for disappointing your 7 year old. It's not like JO made a deal with your kid that he would win the tournament for him. If he's 7 he likely wouldn't know the difference if you talked about one of the other great wrestlers in attendance such as Molinaro. -
1 pointAmazes me so many of those guys are still chasing a dream they'll never catch.

So what is up with JO?
bnwtwg reacted to Relentless125 for a post in a topic
You guys are being pretty ridiculous. Wrestlers sign up for tournaments and then the wrestling media (FLO) over hypes match-ups. Its not JO’s fault that you feel disappointed. He doesn’t exist to serve you. He was trying to potentially test himself, make money and qualify for the world team trials which still isn’t for several months. Since he still needs to qualify you will see him wrestle again before trials. There were more wrestlers in attendance than Oliver and plenty more who didn’t go either. I don’t see anyone bad mouthing our world champs or world team members who didn’t attend. No Dake, Taylor, Cox, Burroughs. Stieber, for example, will still need to qualify. There shouldn’t be a double standard here. I feel like if Stieber had registered and not gone there wouldn’t be anywhere near the level of contempt that’s being shown towards Oliver. -

If Spencer is sick why did he wrestle 48 hours ago?
Show_Me reacted to Flying-Tiger for a post in a topic
Harder to overcome two losses if he did beat Rivera at BigTens. Now with only one loss, he would be seeded ahead at NCAAs. That why this was done. Aside from that, Young sat out after wrestling Friday simply to avoid another loss that would lower his winning percentage, a factor in seeding. Iowa fans can rationalize all they want but when you cherry pick the schedule and only have your guys wrestle those they can beat, that's ducking, period, end of discussion. Brands has now done this with multiple wrestlers, multiple times. It's becoming systematic and other coaches are not doing this to anywhere near the degree Iowa is.As far as Lee's health, I'm sure the only way many Iowa fans will say he is back to 100% is IF he beat Rivera and wins an NCAA Championship. It's obvious there is no way they will admit this prior to the matchup and risk a loss with no excuse. Heck, he just destroyed the #12 wrestler in the country on Friday, yet he incapable of going on Sunday against Rivera, please! -

1 pointEvery year Snyder takes a loss or two and everyone freaks out. Then he makes the world finals and is 3/4 in the finals. Snyder is fine. Wrestling at this level is hard. Snyder will peak for worlds and unless seeding is messed up, will make the finals opposite Sadulaev. He has a chance if winning that match too.
