    Pat Downey "Uncut" interview

At first I thought that this was a great interview. But I was wrong. It's really a piece of crap and shows why Flo is not credible as a source of journalism. There may be cases where there is value to publishing an interview (whether a transcript or a video/audiotape) without more. For example, when the president gives an interview, that can be published without comment (all while knowing that many others will add context or call him on any false statements). But while many of us know that Downey has had multiple run-ins with both the law and team coaches, few of us know (certainly I do not know) the details of what he did, what he was accused of doing, how he was charged and how he was disciplined by his coaches. For Flo to publish his interview where he apologizes but, at the same time, appears baffled by the fact that he was dismissed by Iowa State and then by Iowa without saying anything about what (the police, his coaches, school administrators) claimed he did is irresponsible at best. I really don't know if Downey was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, if he was lucky to get off with just one conviction, if ISU had good reason to cut him, if Brands was right to send him packing. But for Flo to just give his side without even challenging him by asking questions is garbage journalism. Flo provides a service by posting match videos and technique videos. Maybe it should just stick to that.

Man every state championship victor I've ever seen should have been hit for taunting apparently. No emotion allowed, not even a one second flex. Ridiculous that this would be defended or even considered for a rule.

    Suspension

The incidents last year definitely have not helped his reputation, but I don’t think that caused the suspension. I think it was the 3-4 duals in a row with not only some antics but actually losing a team point. Now, you could say that this years antics and last year are just part of his personality. It very well could be that it was there the whole time, his struggle to maintain composure. Last year, his biggest spotlight was NCAAs where some big issues took place. This year he is at IA where they are always in the spotlight, on Flo, and etc. Maybe he just plays into the atmosphere too much.

I am going by what I see. That is it. There is no bias in that. However, when you say it is probably justified because there could be way more to the story because your experience has shown that YOU and other refs would have had to have another reason, that is bias. You are unable to look at it objectively. It seems to me in your mind it cant be wrong because refs can't do wrong. Frankly, if there is so much more to this story, and the ref knows something about this kid that we don't know, is he still acting as an impartial agent? If this were true, there would never be bad calls and there would be no need for instant replay in college. Its just not true all the time.
  11. 2 points
According to the interview he was on the roster for a day and was issued gear but then decided to go fly with the wolves, or something like that. You won't hear him admit he was kicked off or ruled ineligible for something that he was responsible for.

But define taunting? You can't. Its a vague idea. It is up to the refs judgement. To which I say, it better be blatant if you are going to take those steps and ruin an athletes year or career even. I mean athletes are just people, kids even, so it better be a big deal if you are going to make an example out of them. I am not a ref and realized long ago I don't have the attention span for it. It is definitely an admirable thing to take up, but you seem to think that because it is a thankless job they should be free from criticism. I disagree. If you haven't seen a power tripping ref then you aren't paying attention. I could take 15 years and ref. I would hope in that time I wouldn't become so cynical about the athletes that I am totally cool with ending a kids season because of some loose definition of taunting. If I did, then I most certainly would quit, because that is not a refs job at all!
  14. 2 points
Ref makes a call: its all about the ref or why can't he let the kids decide the outcome. Ref doesn't make the call: ref's are incompetent and shouldn't be allowed on the mat. God Bless Refs
  15. 2 points
I'm most upset about calling that flex as a taunt/over the top celebration. It was 1 second long and perfectly in line with what happens all the time. Looks to me like the ref was looking for a way to boot the kid.
  16. 2 points
The first UC call - That ref didn't even hesitate to make the call so I suspect there is more to it that "What was that?" Taunting - If you read the article he's been penalized for this before so he clearly knows the rules. He just did not know the ramifications of another violation. As for the escape, speaking as a zebra, wrestlers do not need to be separated for there to be a "loss of control". When a reversal is "in progress" there will be a point where there is a loss of control but we allow the situation to continue so as to not award an escape then TD for 3 points as opposed to the 2 for a reversal. If time runs out, as in this case, and there was a loss of control we are to award the escape. That is what appears to have happened here. Keep in mind we cannot see the other side in this video and the ref is right there so I will give the benefit of the doubt to the ref. Is the suspension by the state harsh? Yep, but refs and coaches have to control the mat area and and the wrestlers. I do not know this state's policy on multiple UC penalties in a single event but 1-event suspensions are not unheard of. If the next event is the qualification event for state then it is bad timing for sure but the state cannot ignore the rules if in fact that is the case.

I suspect DeSanto's comments were scripted for him by someone in the AD's office. Sounds like the politically correct thing you'd want your athlete to say - not what a real college underclassman would say/write.

DeSanto kind of reminds me of the way somebody described Old Dominion coach Steve Martin once. "He yelled at the campers, he yelled at the counselors, I think I even saw him in the bathroom mirrow yelling at himself....."

You see a single angle video with limited audio and are making assumptions about what you do not see or know then assume the ref is wrong, that is the very definition of bias. You still have not shown me anything to contradict what the ref did beyond internet rantings. There is no bias in me not reacting emotionally. I am in fact looking at it completely objectively with 15 years of experience. Knowing more and making human mistakes are not the same thing.

Hombres if its better to burn out than to fade then Stollhouse is in tall cotton hes a crispy critter out there all bunged up Jensen turned him out and Jensen aint a reel heavy he aint **** got ridden for 4 minutes and wasnt close to getting a takedown watch him burn gents the Voice of Wrestling told you gents run Stollhouse off and wrestle Cass and Tommy would do better if he listened to his Uncle Mudflap but hes dead set on another 4th place finish. Gents Desantio hes a reel pickup heart of a tiger reel tough aint gonna take no **** of no one seems like he could be one of my pups got some fite in him and liked the way he was mocking my close personal friend Manning good for wrestling hombres mayhap I was traveling up there to Penn 20 years ago and got reel close with his Ma reel proud of the kid. Otherwise gents its a Iowa team reel defensive like tie you up and try to push you around and wear you out and score a takedown late thats trouble friends but when you aim for 4th then thems the brakes.

    Cassar vs Stoll

I think it depends on where the match is wrestled. If Stoll is able to keep his hands on him and slow it down, I think he can win the match on the mat. Cassar has struggled on bottom in the past and Stoll is one of the best at the weight on top. With that being said, it's hard to see Stoll keeping Cassar off his legs, especially not being 100%. I'll say Cassar picks up 2-3 takedowns and wins by a couple points while being relatively dominant despite the close score.

    Penn State @ Ohio State

As much as I do believe this dual will be close, 5-5 I do not see one match being close. OSU could get bonus points at 133, 149 & 184 PSU should get bonus points in all 5 of their wins. I do not think Moore keeps it close with Bo. I hope he does but IMO Bo is the most dominant wrestler right now. I feel the only other person in the conversation is his teammate Nolf.

The escape was a legit loss of control and the 1 point was awarded properly. Kid absolutely should have been hit for Unsportsmanlike there. The flexing to the crowd is standard practice in high school athletics these days. Definitely not unsportsmanlike unless you are doing it directly at your opponent.
  35. 1 point
My order of outrage: 1. The reversal call - didn't look like a reversal to me, but I'll defer to the official. Dumb for the kid to argue this, given that it had no impact on the match outcome. This is fine. 2. First penalty - we don't know what the kid said to the ref. Again, I'll give the ref. the benefit of the doubt and assume it was inappropriate, so this penalty may be legit. This is also fine. 3. Second penalty - this is a bad call. Kid flexes for less than a sec. in a moment of excitement - the ref. should use his discretion, particularly given that he likely knows the second penalty will eliminate the kids from the post-season. This is a terrible call. 4. State rule requiring he not compete the next weekend if he gets 2 unsportsmanlike calls - terrible rule. You've got to have exceptions for this - e.g. when the post-season is involved. These are 14-18 year old kids who do dumb things all the time; you've got to build in some flexibility to let them learn from mistakes without outsized consequences. 5. Per the article, the state does not allow for any appeals whatsoever. Also a terrible rule and should never be the case. That's how situations like this end up in court, cost everyone more money, and make people start hating the parents and lawyers involved.

How can Rutgers become a top 10 team?

Major problem with the internet - Every dumb ass can just type in stupidity. The fact that you could write "I think" when clearly you do not should be actionable. Do you have no job? No family? Nothing better to do than be a dumb ass? Why do people hate Cael? Really? The dude is freaking beloved and arguably the best college wrestler AND college coach ever. Your "thoughts" on Rutgers?? Seriously? Here's a thought - STFU. You are a complete negative to this board since your recent arrival. The only possible saving grace is that you were a dbag under a different name and this is just break-even stupidity.

If you'd have blown me up 140 pounds I could have destroyed every heavyweight that's ever lived. Oh and if I had a better training ethic. And had more skill and athleticism. That's if I had wrestled all the other great heavyweights that ever lived of course. Oh and I was cured of the flu that plauged my entire career. There's that. But otherwise, I'm the best fantasy heavyweight that's ever lived. Don't know if I could have beaten fantasy NATO though - some things are just not meant to be.
