Man every state championship victor I've ever seen should have been hit for taunting apparently. No emotion allowed, not even a one second flex. Ridiculous that this would be defended or even considered for a rule.

    Suspension

The incidents last year definitely have not helped his reputation, but I don’t think that caused the suspension. I think it was the 3-4 duals in a row with not only some antics but actually losing a team point. Now, you could say that this years antics and last year are just part of his personality. It very well could be that it was there the whole time, his struggle to maintain composure. Last year, his biggest spotlight was NCAAs where some big issues took place. This year he is at IA where they are always in the spotlight, on Flo, and etc. Maybe he just plays into the atmosphere too much.

Another case of an egotistical ref, making the match about them.

I'm most upset about calling that flex as a taunt/over the top celebration. It was 1 second long and perfectly in line with what happens all the time. Looks to me like the ref was looking for a way to boot the kid.

The first UC call - That ref didn't even hesitate to make the call so I suspect there is more to it that "What was that?" Taunting - If you read the article he's been penalized for this before so he clearly knows the rules. He just did not know the ramifications of another violation. As for the escape, speaking as a zebra, wrestlers do not need to be separated for there to be a "loss of control". When a reversal is "in progress" there will be a point where there is a loss of control but we allow the situation to continue so as to not award an escape then TD for 3 points as opposed to the 2 for a reversal. If time runs out, as in this case, and there was a loss of control we are to award the escape. That is what appears to have happened here. Keep in mind we cannot see the other side in this video and the ref is right there so I will give the benefit of the doubt to the ref. Is the suspension by the state harsh? Yep, but refs and coaches have to control the mat area and and the wrestlers. I do not know this state's policy on multiple UC penalties in a single event but 1-event suspensions are not unheard of. If the next event is the qualification event for state then it is bad timing for sure but the state cannot ignore the rules if in fact that is the case.

    Suspension

I suspect DeSanto's comments were scripted for him by someone in the AD's office. Sounds like the politically correct thing you'd want your athlete to say - not what a real college underclassman would say/write.

DeSanto kind of reminds me of the way somebody described Old Dominion coach Steve Martin once. "He yelled at the campers, he yelled at the counselors, I think I even saw him in the bathroom mirrow yelling at himself....."

Don't blame her. She is working 90 hour weeks and that's just standing appointments with the coaches :)

I don't think DeSanto can control himself, despite his comments following the 1 match suspension. Wasn't he apologetic after putting a kimura on Micic last year? We'll see.

I kind of feel like praising Downey is like congratulating someone for climbing out of a hole without asking why they jumped down there in the first place.

    D1 vs D3

133 Boo Dryden of Northeast Oklahoma is mean as hell, but will he go D1? He would be a solid pickup and worth a redshirt at the DI level. Long tall frame for the weight, he is 35-0 on the year and only 1/3rd of his wins are against juco guys. He has wins over Sjmolering (by fall) and Parrish of Nebraska. Also wins over the #2 NJCAA wrestler by major, and pins over 4 different NAIA and NJCAA All Americans. I am fading fast (just got in about 40 minutes ago from announcing a match, but I do like Baterdene Boldma at 141, but he is ranked #2, so I may have to research some more.

I’m thinking Brands wishes the Ok State dual wasn’t on the schedule. I’d put the over/under at 3.5 for number of Hawkeye starters sitting this one out.

    Iowa 2020 National Champs?

Cornell has a shot at a few champs next year with Arujau, Yanni, Darmstadt. Dean is a long shot but still possible. 2021 they all return as well.

Who, Stoll? I'm 53, in terrible condition, and I'm 3/4's convinced I could've given Jennings a better match than Stoll.

I’ve watched Kolodzik wrestle quite a few times this year and he reminds me of Dean Heil in a way. Lots of defensive wrestling and not much action. I think after today Ashnault is a clear favorite at 149 to win a championship. Great performance.
