    Pat Downey "Uncut" interview

At first I thought that this was a great interview. But I was wrong. It's really a piece of crap and shows why Flo is not credible as a source of journalism. There may be cases where there is value to publishing an interview (whether a transcript or a video/audiotape) without more. For example, when the president gives an interview, that can be published without comment (all while knowing that many others will add context or call him on any false statements). But while many of us know that Downey has had multiple run-ins with both the law and team coaches, few of us know (certainly I do not know) the details of what he did, what he was accused of doing, how he was charged and how he was disciplined by his coaches. For Flo to publish his interview where he apologizes but, at the same time, appears baffled by the fact that he was dismissed by Iowa State and then by Iowa without saying anything about what (the police, his coaches, school administrators) claimed he did is irresponsible at best. I really don't know if Downey was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, if he was lucky to get off with just one conviction, if ISU had good reason to cut him, if Brands was right to send him packing. But for Flo to just give his side without even challenging him by asking questions is garbage journalism. Flo provides a service by posting match videos and technique videos. Maybe it should just stick to that.

    Suspension

The incidents last year definitely have not helped his reputation, but I don’t think that caused the suspension. I think it was the 3-4 duals in a row with not only some antics but actually losing a team point. Now, you could say that this years antics and last year are just part of his personality. It very well could be that it was there the whole time, his struggle to maintain composure. Last year, his biggest spotlight was NCAAs where some big issues took place. This year he is at IA where they are always in the spotlight, on Flo, and etc. Maybe he just plays into the atmosphere too much.

But define taunting? You can't. Its a vague idea. It is up to the refs judgement. To which I say, it better be blatant if you are going to take those steps and ruin an athletes year or career even. I mean athletes are just people, kids even, so it better be a big deal if you are going to make an example out of them. I am not a ref and realized long ago I don't have the attention span for it. It is definitely an admirable thing to take up, but you seem to think that because it is a thankless job they should be free from criticism. I disagree. If you haven't seen a power tripping ref then you aren't paying attention. I could take 15 years and ref. I would hope in that time I wouldn't become so cynical about the athletes that I am totally cool with ending a kids season because of some loose definition of taunting. If I did, then I most certainly would quit, because that is not a refs job at all!

Ref makes a call: its all about the ref or why can't he let the kids decide the outcome. Ref doesn't make the call: ref's are incompetent and shouldn't be allowed on the mat. God Bless Refs
  10. 2 points
The first UC call - That ref didn't even hesitate to make the call so I suspect there is more to it that "What was that?" Taunting - If you read the article he's been penalized for this before so he clearly knows the rules. He just did not know the ramifications of another violation. As for the escape, speaking as a zebra, wrestlers do not need to be separated for there to be a "loss of control". When a reversal is "in progress" there will be a point where there is a loss of control but we allow the situation to continue so as to not award an escape then TD for 3 points as opposed to the 2 for a reversal. If time runs out, as in this case, and there was a loss of control we are to award the escape. That is what appears to have happened here. Keep in mind we cannot see the other side in this video and the ref is right there so I will give the benefit of the doubt to the ref. Is the suspension by the state harsh? Yep, but refs and coaches have to control the mat area and and the wrestlers. I do not know this state's policy on multiple UC penalties in a single event but 1-event suspensions are not unheard of. If the next event is the qualification event for state then it is bad timing for sure but the state cannot ignore the rules if in fact that is the case.

I suspect DeSanto's comments were scripted for him by someone in the AD's office. Sounds like the politically correct thing you'd want your athlete to say - not what a real college underclassman would say/write.

DeSanto kind of reminds me of the way somebody described Old Dominion coach Steve Martin once. "He yelled at the campers, he yelled at the counselors, I think I even saw him in the bathroom mirrow yelling at himself....."

“I want to apologize to my opponents and teammates for my actions on the mat. I know they are disrespectful and there is no excuse,” DeSanto said. “I accept the consequences of my behavior and the decision of Coach Brands, and have assured my teammates and coaches that I will better represent our team when I return.” Still want to support this BS? Kudos to Brands for stepping up.

It’s disgraceful what they’ve done to DeSanto over at Iowa by reportedly suspending him against Maryland. IMO he’s been nothing but hilarious this year. #FreeDeSanto

The problem is there is more evidence that shows that the ref was probably in the wrong, then there is that shows he was right. From what the video shows and the posts about the kids dad, the ref could have easily been a little flustered with the kid from the initial UC (which was the right call) and this fan snapping at him, which could have swayed his decision to hit the kid again. If the kid just flexed, he should not of got hit with the second UC.

Early this season, a varsity match I was coaching went to Sudden Victory. The opposing wrestler made a hand gesture to the crowd. Later, I asked another coach about it, and it turned out the opposing wrestler was making an "O" for "overtime," and the referee did not penalize the gesture. To me, it looked a lot like a obscene gesture one could make to state their opponent isn't very tough. A gesture that looks a lot like the optional start symbol. The ref had seen this gesture from this team before, and deemed it not taunting. If I had seen that gesture with no context, I would have assumed it was an obscene gesture. For right or for wrong, there is obviously more than meets the eye to this situation. The fact that this official deemed this flex a taunt suggests that there is something else going on besides just the flex.

    Cassar vs Stoll

I think it depends on where the match is wrestled. If Stoll is able to keep his hands on him and slow it down, I think he can win the match on the mat. Cassar has struggled on bottom in the past and Stoll is one of the best at the weight on top. With that being said, it's hard to see Stoll keeping Cassar off his legs, especially not being 100%. I'll say Cassar picks up 2-3 takedowns and wins by a couple points while being relatively dominant despite the close score.

Yes. John Peterson, Olympic gold & silver and World silver & bronze medalist in freestyle. Serious late bloomer as he was "only" an NAIA all-american in college for the University of Wisconsin Stout. I went to camps as a kid with the Peterson brothers & other 70s era Oly team members as clinicians & also got the chance to meet and talk to John a few years ago @ NCAAs.....great guy.

As much as I do believe this dual will be close, 5-5 I do not see one match being close. OSU could get bonus points at 133, 149 & 184 PSU should get bonus points in all 5 of their wins. I do not think Moore keeps it close with Bo. I hope he does but IMO Bo is the most dominant wrestler right now. I feel the only other person in the conversation is his teammate Nolf.

    Iowa 2020 National Champs?

I think he was really big at 157, and was rumored to really struggle with that cut last year. Part of the calculation of calling him a finalist contender is that I am anticipating Zahid will move to 184 to make room for Anthony/prepare for 86 kg. I absolutely believe that Kemerer can compete with the next tier of guys after Hall. Would I necessarily pick him to come out of the group of Amine, Smith, Kutler, or McFadden? No, but I definitely think he'll be in the mix. Also, as was noted by another poster, I think he was out this year with a knee injury, not a back injury. I think it also helps that he'll now have a full year to add a few more lbs of muscle for the weight. I think a lot of people forget how good he was his first two years because we haven't seen him in a while.
  32. 1 point
Fact that he's been penalized for this before is irrelevant. There's no exception in the state rule for first-timers.
  33. 1 point
Stuff like this happens all the time. Refs tend to work in the same geographic region then in the post-season the most experienced refs get the call. Refs come from all walks of life. The potential conflict of interest is why I stopped reffing when my kid entered high school.
  34. 1 point
Watching the video, I cannot believe he got disqualified. Now, we don't know what he said to the ref, so it is possible he earned one conduct call. But, if that flex is called every time like that, there would be no high school wrestling this year. I mean he flexed for less than one second, and it wasn't even dramatic.

    Desanto's In-Match Antics

That's pretty weak. The wrestlers from the "double class" like Dennis, Morningstar, etc... all had significantly better results under Brands than before. Ask them whether Brands' leadership played a big role in their development. Also, reading comprehension again. 5th is their worst finish over the course of 12 years not counting Brands' first year when he couldn't wrestle 3 of his studs. 10 top 4 finishes. The landscape of college wrestling has changed. If your definition of a good hire is only winning titles, then there is only one successful coach in the country in Sanderson. This isn't the 80s grandpa. The days of Gable are over for Iowa. The reign of Cael is here. He is a transcendent figure in the sport. The GOAT in college wrestling (making him the most recognizable/admired figure for recruits), an Olympic champion, and a world class developer of talent. He also has assembled an amazing staff of elite assistants that for some reason never leave for head coaching opportunities. He is the Gable of our age. Everybody wants to wrestle for him, and for good reason. But to then take those facts into consideration and decide they mean that all other coaches are failures is just stupid. Do you want Smith to step down at Ok. State because he hasn't won a title since the mid 2000s? He's more of a failure than Brands isn't he?

Stoll has always struggled with leg riders. In fact, Jensen's older brother gave him lots of problems with the same ride. I wouldn't look too much into this considering most heavies don't ride legs and aren't going to start just because of Stoll. I also noticed that his giant knee brace made it very difficult from him to free his leg once Jensen got it in. Regardless, I think Stoll is who most of us thought he was before the match. Not 100%, but still a good enough handfighter and rider to make things interesting with the top guys. I would put his ceiling at the bottom half of the stand, but it will largely depend on his draw. If he runs into a more mobile/funky wrestler like Jensen he will be in trouble.
