    Kyle Conel to PSU

The one thing I will say with a guy like Conel that is hard to know is how much room for growth there is. Kent State has had some good individuals but there is a clear difference between their room and a top-notch room. One day I was talking to one of my close friends who coaches one of the Top 15 D1 programs. We were just talking about different teams and we began to talk about one team in particular who has been a top 20 nationally ranked several times. He pointed out that no person from their program had ever been a D1 all-American, despite their H.S. success. They probably had 15 or more guys make the top 20 rankings in their weight in about a decade during that time. I asked him why he thought that was. I found his response interesting. He said that in his opinion, they trained at such a high and intense level in high school, and had a lot of top kids that he thinks they were closer to their ceiling coming out of high school. They trained a lot like colleges in his view. He said they were really good, but when they hit college they just didn't have the same trajectory. Now, since that conversation a long time ago, they have had I think 2 D1 All American's. That conversation got me thinking though. When you see a kid from a not so stellar program, that has lacked the workout partners, coaching level, and resource availability, there is a lot more learning space when they get with a top-notch program. You can almost think about theories and philosophies around social justice, right? A student who scores a 28 ACT from a high socioeconomic family, with lots of resource access and opportunity, versus the student with a 25 or 26 ACT from a very low-socioeconomic status with a major lack of resource access and opportunity. On paper, the 28 looks better, but the student who had a ton of life struggles and scored a 26 ACT had certain unmeasurable attributes (ie., grit, resiliency, work ethic, drive, etc.). So you can't necessarily measure them equally. Which is a better show of the overall performance of the individual? The 28 or 26? Doing teaching or conferences I often draw a picture with two people on the side of the mountain and ask who climbed the furthest. Most people will answer the person who is closest to the top of the mountain. They rarely ask where each person was at in relation to the mountain when they started their climb because they assume they started at the same place. I think the same is true for many athletes, students, employees, etc. People who start further behind or lack the resources that others have, sometimes have more space available between the floor and the ceiling. So to speak.

If you're flying into PIT make sure you have your phone taking a video when you come through the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Pittsburgh might have the greatest wow moment entering any city in the world coming from that direction. A really underrated place within walking distance to PPG is the Tap Room at the William Penn Hotel. Pub Fries are solid and they usually have a couple of local breweries on tap. Would be easy between sessions.

As much as I love me some Zain, I think Dake would've taken him. Dake was a freak. He was a physical, athletic monster tougher, stronger than anybody in his weight class, plus a master of defensive wrestling and scrambling. Kyle Dake is easily my pick as the greatest 4 timer. By the time he's done he'll blow Cael's international achievements out of the water.

This kind of attitude really bothers me. Do I think wrestling is going to compete with the NFL, NBA, etc.? Absolutely not. However, in a country with more or less unregulated capitalism, if you are not making an attempt to grow you are at risk of being no more. That is a fact, everything might seem rosie and great right now, and I agree there has been an improvement, but when the college industrial complex comes crashing down there is going to be changes made. I think an apathetic attitude about the position of our sport is a dangerous position to take. It hasn't served us well in the past. The thing is we are actually way better positioned than other sports IMO. Right now we have a loose correlation to MMA which is growing fast. Like it or not, we are a feeder system to the MMA. I think we should be embracing that. The fact that Jui Jitsu is absolutely blowing up in this country and we don't see that as an opportunity is beyond me, because to most its not super fun to watch either. We also provide a great product in 10 minutes, which is great as people start consuming more media on their phones and less on their television. We have an interesting personality/wrestling style dynamic that creates great story lines. There may be some really interesting guys in swimming, but there is still a best way to hit the breast stroke. We have an advantage where we have interesting characters with interesting styles too. We have to go against our own bias's and do whats best for the sport sometimes. The singlet is the best example. The people have spoken. It is weird, and kids outside of the sport are turned off by it. There is a reasonable alternative and we should all be embracing that, but for some reason many insist that it needs to stay for no reason but tradition. The further challenge going ahead is how do you package it and educate. I will tell you one thing, STOP MAKING THE RULES SO CONFUSING. It needs to be streamlined. Most of the rules(counts, edge rules, etc.) we keep adding are to battle the fact refs won't call stalling. It would be a lot less confusing if it all fell under stalling and added a push out. It takes someone 1 minute to explain basketball. It would take me a couple matches at least to get someone to understand what is going on in a wrestling match. That is a problem.

I had not heard it that way either but, from the post season points of emphasis distributed to the officials: 2. Hands to the Face: If deliberate or intentional, make the call. Again, we’re not over-officiating this situation…if incidental, no call. Let the wrestlers wrestle, use good judgement, make the call, when warranted. https://ncaawrestling.arbitersports.com/Groups/107525/Library/files/Post Season POE's for Officials 2-21-19.pdf This is going to be a cluster.

I don't necessarily disagree. I honestly think it is a coin flip between the OSUs. However, you did leave out Weigel who is seeded 3rd for Oklahoma State. That gives them four guys seeded to make the top 4, the same number as Ohio State. I don't think Pletcher is on that much of a higher tier than Jacobe Smith.

Don Rohn, true frosh champ for Clarion at 134 in 1973. Seeded #8, he beat the #1, #4, and #2. I heard stories from old timers at Lehigh that Rohn's dad didn't make the long trip to Washington because, "Donny's just a freshman. I'll go next year when it's not as far." Also winning for Clarion that year were Wade Schalles (158) and Bill Simpson (167). As a non-Division I school, Clarion was ineligible for the team competition. I've seen differing reports that suggested they would have been 3rd or 4th as a team that year. Rohn's 4 years were: 1973, champ as the #8 seed 1974, 3rd as the #1 seed 1975, DNP - upset in 1st round as the #2 seed. Didn't get pulled into the repechage 1976, 6th as the #2 seed

It would be great though. Imagine them hosting nationals? I'm not saying that travel would be easy to and from there, but with scheduling you could find ways to minimize the travel time loss. Plus if they got some sponsors together and hosted a tournament, who wouldn't want to go to that in the dead of winter instead of freezing somewhere up north? The main problem I see is a lack of local talent or interest. I do know a former top 10 greco wrestler who lives there. But if the university could be talked into it, it wouldn't be hard to talk kids from the midwest to attend school and wrestle there. They already do a lot with basketball's major teams.....so it could be possible. Also, who wouldn't want to live, go to school and train there?

    Over/under on NOLF pins?

Nickal doesn't really break them down, though. He kinda backs off, hands on shoulders, waiting on them to get up and turn around at which point he can shoot immediately and dump them again. If they just kinda stay on fours, kinda semi up, and don't do anything he switches to the other side and tries to power a cradle or something like that. Fun to watch, kinda like watching a spider and a fly.

Thought of one more spot to recommend. In the middle of downtown, there is Sienna Mercato. It's a 3 story restaraunt and each floor has a different menu/theme. The 3rd floor is a rooftop bar which has a nice view and a great selection of beers and cocktails. That's probably my favorite bar in the city.

Kyle Conel is also a world medalist though so maybe he wanted to be in the same room as PSU's bigs to train for Worlds or the Olympics. Training with Cael, Varner, Taylor, Bo, Provisor, etc. doesn't sound so bad even if he doesn't crack the starting lineup for folkstyle..

I was the head Assistant at Central Connecticut in the early 90's, I left probably 3 or 4 years before they dropped the program. When I was there we were East Coast runner - ups and then East Coast champions. The same time I was there I think that the football team won like 3 games and the basketball team would go down the road and play UCONN and lose by 60 points. I often shake my head about the Admin. dropping there most successful athletic team..

Surprised you didn't put Brock Mauller (#4) on your list. I have near 100% confidence that Ashnault will choke at NCAAs, plus it's kind of a weak weight class. After Mauller crushed Gfeller I started thinking Mauller a great chance to win NCAAs as a FR.

LOL the problem with Hosseinkhani is he is not that bad. he always gives you false hope and then he loses in last seconds. but in Afzali's case you know he is bad from the start. so no, no North Korean camp sentence for him. LOL he better just stays at home. PS: Mongolia was A team. they had couple of world medalists in their squad. Mongolia, Japan and Cuba were almost their best possible rosters. Cuba even had World Greco bronze medalist Oscar Pino switching to freestyle. (probably because Mijain Lopez is back)

This is nitpicky, but I really thought they should have released Askren's documentary on Youtube to drive interest in wrestling and Flo. There was a 1 week window there where he was all the talk in MMA. I feel like they missed an opportunity to bring over crossover attention by not doing something like that. Oh well, I don't actually know much.

    Chance's Chances

He was in complete control through the first period (up 4-2 I believe with 2 takedowns). Then either he chose down or Wick chose top and Wick cradled him up and pinned him. This was before everyone realized that Wick had that kind of cradling ability. I think Chance is a tough match up for Wick, assuming Chance can prevent from being cradled which most of the top 15 guys at 165 seem to have figured out. I also think he could be a tough match up for Marinelli, especially if he can get to his left side underhook consistently. That would completely shut down Marinelli's offense if he can get to it and also open up some scoring opportunities. Was Imar able to get to his underhook against Marinelli last year? I can't remember.
