Is Yianni the Second Best Ever?

The opening question is an insult to more wrestling greats than I can possibly name. In my opinion, he actually was lucky he had the ref he had against McKenna in the NCAA 2019 finals. That being said, I have a lot of respect for Yianni, and he's one of my favorite active NCAA wrestlers, but please, he hasn't earned the status. Frankly, I think his competition has yet to avail itself. It takes more than two years of college wrestling to assess the opening statement of "best ever".

I was waiting for DF to start a topic on the matter, but I guess he may have missed watching the NCAAs this year. Did anyone else immediately think about how antiheroic Fix was in his NCAA finals match? Consider the fact that he did a masterful job with his neutral defense for most of the match. And of course he would have won in overtime thanks to some really tactical leg riding, which has to be considered the cousin of the cheap tilt, if not for the intervention of a referee who decided he wanted to insert himself into the match. To top it all off though, in truly an outstanding display of antiheroicism, was the moment when Fix started complaining about Suriano grabbing his headgear midway through the takedown attempt in overtime instead of actually trying to defend the shot. When that happened, I immediately thought that DF would be proud, as the "try hard" wrestler thing to do would have been to go for a scramble/Hail Mary defense. A true tactician knows that statistically his odds were better going for the headgear penalty point than a takedown defense. I only wish the ref would have awarded Fix the match upon review though, like they did for Mark Hall against Valencia a couple of years ago.

    Headgear: Cliff Keen vs Halo

It would always crack me up when I would have wrestlers getting academic accolades, or wrestlers would boast about their GPA in their tournament finals bio, and they couldnt figure out how to adjust a couple of plastic straps on their headgear.

Pretty sure most people that have cauliflower ear are because they’re not wearing it at all (in practice), not because of the type of headgear they wear

The ref did not award the match to Hall like you claim. He awarded a point. Hall then scored a takedown after the restart. Hall legitimately won that match. Zahid legitimately pulled on the head gear, however that is not what cost him the match. What cost in the match was later getting takedown when he had plenty of time to score a takedown of his own. Now you want to say Zahid went for a desperation move because of being behind by a point? Sure. But that's Zahids fault. He did not need to go for that stupid jump. He could have executed a proper set up. He didnt. His fault. He lost legtmately. There was zero controversy there. Suriano v Fix? Yes controversial. Hall v Valencia 1? Zero controversy. Do not even try to pretend theyr the same thing. And please no, I am no fan of Mark Hall. I laugh every day whenever I think of those people a few years ago calling him a once ina generation talent.

Disagree. I found the CK headgear to be the best, and it fits well if you adjust the straps.

    Bo Nickal Freestyle Questions

If Nickal does not like cutting weight why wouldn't he do well without it? Working like a pro at technique to hone it, could he do what Sadulaev does? Become technically superior to most of the competition while being comfortable at his natural weight? Couple that with more strength training to become a complete wrestler and work like John Smith on perfecting his game? Maybe do what Dave Schultz did and go to Russia and such to train with the top guys and learn on the mat with them?

Is Yianni the Second Best Ever?

But is being undefeated in 15 matches, mostly duals, the same as 35-0, while wrestling in three tournaments, plus duals?

I asked this in another thread. Imar was 67-1 with two titles compared to Yianni at 66-1 with two titles.

But steroids can increase head size and if his got bigger he'd probably tip over.

Great points OP, but your whole argument is predicated on the notion that Stoll's constant pushing is somehow "wrestling" or "attempting offense." It is not. Pushing in itself is not an offensive move, nor is pushing someone off the mat an attempt to score. It is avoiding wrestling and therefore stalling in itself. The act of pushing to create pressure and then taking it away to set up a shot or snap is offense. Pushing non-stop is not.

Would Marinneli be a Champ at PSU

Nope. But he would have got a medical redshirt for his freshman year even though Joseph ended up winning his weight class.........I kid, I kid! ;)

Beat me to it, no more taped headgear.
  15. 1 point
This was common for those of us who wrestled in high school in the 80s and 90s. There wasn't wrestling on TV unless you lived in the state of Iowa, but we all knew about Iowa anyway. We'd get VHS tapes of Iowa wrestling and watch them, and "Iowa Style" was a legitimate thing talked about all over. PSU is the big name now, but Iowa had a real mystique about them that I don't think we'll see again in this sport. Similar to how you can argue that we've had better wrestlers since Gable, but nobody has matched the Gable mystique. So it is easy to believe that there are a lot of Iowa wrestling fans around the country in their 30s to 50s who have 0 ties to the University of Iowa and have only been to the state to watch wrestling.

It definitely doesn't hurt, but most of the newer programs in the south aren't quite up to the D1 level yet. I can't think of any wrestlers from any of the newer Missouri hs programs who are making a D1 impact, although they are making some noise at HS national tournies. All of the solid D1 wrestlers are I-70: KC, StL, or Eierman kids.

Is Yianni the Second Best Ever?

I am sympathetic to the McKenna match officiating, but at least we have a straight up td by Yianni in SV to settle on. One can try to argue that Mckenna shouldn't have had to wrestle in SV, but he could have just taken it to Yianni there.

    Headgear: Cliff Keen vs Halo

I wore CK signature all of my wrestling days and never had any sort of ear pain. I don’t recall a time where my ears took any impact or contact/impact/abraision etc. If properly fit they almost never come off or get out of place. Going to the foam covers instead of rubber was glorious. Although the foam definitely did crack.

Do ALL 2019 NCAA Champs automatically

All these Olympic Redshirts might just become the new “wear your backpack around the tournament all day’ circa 2005,” “fold your socks over the top of your wrestling shoes circa 1994,” and “tuck your sweats into your socks circa now.”

Halos are cliff keen. For those that dont know, halos were most popular during the 90s and was most recently worn by Carson Kuhn. So people called it the cliff Keen 2 strap and where as rhe currently most popular cliff keen head gear was called the 4 strap.

Is Yianni the Second Best Ever?

No. No it isnt. Cannot compare old timer wrestling to today. When I watch Gable vs Owings, I can't believe what I am watching. Yianni would major Gable at the very least.

Not a big deal, but it was a gold "X" on the left thigh of the singlet. At the time, they were tied with USC Outdoor Men's Track and Field, which has since been broken.

That's what Johnson said but I think he's wrong. I looked for the rule before posting earlier and couldn't find rhe actual verbatim rule. But several summaries and synopses I found used the verb "grab" for clothing and headgear as a prohibited act. I also don't see how the rule couldn't prohibit a grab. It can't make sense that one guy can grab and hold the other's headgear in the way that happened here. Otherwise you could build match strategy around that, right? Just grab and hold the headgear to stop your opponent's movement. I would think that you can truly push and post the headgear, without grabbing the headgear, just as you can the head itself. But you can't grab and clasp the headgear just like you can't grab and clasp someone's hair. That's got to be correct, I think. I thought Fix was going to score without it although some above disagree with that. Regardless the rule is there to resolve that uncertainty. Unlike hands to the face calls which usually don't have anything to do with thwarting a scoring move. None of this is meant to detract from the heart that Suriano showed in overcoming two years of adversity (injuries and transfer); in avenging this year's losses in March; in controlling the mat in neutral in the final; and in escaping from a great rider in a short time restart (after a helpful stalemate call that often gets made in overtime) in a highest pressure situation.

What wrestling technique was parris trying to do? He could stay there and face the music or he could back up and not get scored on. He made his choice.
  31. 1 point
Being smaller doesn't excuse backing out of bounds and refusing to engage anymore than being slow excuses Stoll from having to try to score TDs. Being small is unfortunate, but going straight backwards from the center of the mat is the classic definition of stalling and going straight out of bounds is the new definition of stalling. Parris was called repeatedly because he stalled the whole match.

    Bo Nickal Freestyle Questions

Bo has no good options. Period. Realistically 2020 is probably Taylor’s last shot at Olympic gold and Cael will rightfully do whatever it takes to make sure Bo doesn’t play spoiler at 86...even though I think it’s pretty obvious 86 is where Bo belongs (for now). The US has a recent or reigning world champ at 79, 86, 92, and 97...so Bo’s decision is the epitome of “pick your poison.” If I’m Bo the poison I’d pick for 2019 is Cox at 92. Not a good matchup but in my opinion it’s much better than going up another weight to challenge Snyder in 2019. I think his best path to Tokyo is to go 92 this year on his way to scaling up to 97 for 2020. Truthfully I don’t see Bo beating Cox at 92 this year but if he can gain enough good weight over the next year he could challenge Snyder in 2020. This may be for another thread but where does Hall go in 2020? Didn’t he say after the last Jr World’s that it was the last time he’d make 74? If that’s the case then I guess what I said about Cael keeping Bo out of Taylor’s way could be moot...since someone else in the PSU room is already gonna be challenging him.

Sitting in the front row or NC State's section this year, right behind PSU's section....the first session, PSU fans made it known that they were going to stand and cheer for every PSU takedown/backpoints. I didn't have a problem with this....slightly annoying making it difficult to watch other matches, but glad that there are passionate fans out there. Some others around me grew tired of this very quickly though. That combined with too many beverages before the session led to some verbally complaining every time and booing PSU any chance they got. One guy yells PSU SUCKS after a PSU win....lady goes to get an usher to try to get a couple guys removed. It took fans not involved from the one section over to speak up and talk the usher out of it...still a verbal warning to the rowdy bunch. Cue the next session and the DeSanto/RBY match. I did not catch the beginning of it, and it was loud with the PSU faithful booing the end of the match....but I look over and some big, bulky dude got out of his seat and walked back a couple rows to get in these same guys' faces. Didn't escalate to blows, but tempers were raised. His wife/girlfriend was holding him back, trying to calm him down.....Cooler heads prevailed after, and smooth sailing the rest of the tournament. Aside from this, everyone does get along regardless of favorite teams/wrestlers. You can be sitting next to a guy who is passionate about McKenna/Ohio State while you root for Nick Lee/PSU, and everyone gets along just fine.

    1. Which moment is more exciting, for you? The start of the tournament, OR the start of the Finals? Start of the finals, without a doubt. The start of the tournament is exciting but it's a morning session. The finals is Saturday night, there's been a long break between sessions and half the arena is at least a few drinks in by that point, so there's a different buzz about it in addition to the matches being more important. 2. For what was the LOUDEST applause or reaction that YOU have ever heard? In the past 10 years I remember Ness over Dennis as being exceptionally loud. Nickal over Martin last year was big as well, as was Martin over Nickal at MSG. 3. What is the one concession food item that you ALWAYS buy and eat? Peanuts? 4. What is the one high-priced food item that you really do want but hate to purchase? Dippin' Dots. Ice cream of the future. 5. If you’re willing to tell, has there ever been an undefeated top seed that you WANTED to see lose? But provided that he was not wrestling the wrestler for YOUR team. Depends on the round. Generally I'm all for chaos, but I'd also like to see the best possible matchups in the semis and finals. 6. What is the music like? Is it loud and overbearing like at a football game (domed stadium game)? Or is it real good and actually ADDS to the overall atmosphere? Varies somewhat by arena, but I think it's typically a non-issue and generally additive to the environment. 7. Excluding all consolation rounds, do you ever feel any LULLS in the action? Yes, but hardly any if you're a fan of wrestling and not just a fan of "your team." Bracket challenges, fantasy drafts, and gambling help as well. 8. You who sit up high, how well can you see the action on the floor? Are there TV monitors that you look at? Again, depends on the arena, but I've sat in the 5th row and the 5th from last row, and enjoyed both. Some arenas have TV monitors in the upper decks that are useful but generally you'll be able to see all of the action pretty well even from the upper upper deck. 9. What was the most pleasant conversation that you ever had with a stranger sitting next to you or nearby? On the contrary, you ever get close to fisticuffs with somebody sitting nearby? Or witness such? I met a Penn State fan from Oklahoma this year. He said he roots for them because he likes their singlet, and that he's been following them since 2016 so he's not one of those "fake fans." I called him a phony and we got pretty close to fisticuffs. I think I could have taken him, too. Granted, he looked pretty tough for an 11 year old, but I had justice and Jim Beam on my side. 10. Can you describe any moment that brought you to tears, or near tears? Tears no. Plenty of moments of absolute dejection or elation, though.

    Cael's in match coaching

In match coaching is overrated. I am not saying it doesn't help at all, but if the wrestler doesn't know at that point, then they don't stand a chance anyways.
