    Nick Suriano: Fashion Icon

I apologize if this is well known (pardon my ignorance), but I was previously unexposed to Suriano's style off the mat. First of all, I was previously under the impression that he didn't wear any clothing that might cover large portions of his body from the waist up, outside of his singlet (briefly), and warm-ups, which I imagine are pure torture for him. If you were able to convince me that he does in fact own shirts, I would have assumed they were of the sleeveless or mesh variety. Perhaps something slightly more tasetful, cut off at the midsection a la Ezekiel Elliott. As it turns out, I was wrong on both counts. At first I thought it was a mistake when i saw the thumbnail, and asked "why is John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever showing up in this link preview?" You know... "who put Dirk Diggler in front of a Rutgers logo?" or "since when did Kevin Bacon wrestle for Rutgers?" Perhaps it's just a joke he and his teammates are playing... like when hockey guys or baseball players grow nasty beards for the postseason, but I'm not really sure Suriano has the capacity to joke. You be the judge:

For Pittsburgh, didn't have all sessions tickets, I did paid $200 for the first 4 sessions. Didn't feel like paying another $150.00 for the placing and finals. Drove home Saturday morning and watched at home. It was great, would do it again, if I had to. For Minn, got all season tickets, so all set.

    Headgear: Cliff Keen vs Halo

Looks just like the head gear I wore for 3 seasons in college. Even the same color. Never had any issues with it as far as ear protection. I can see how it would be a problem if you did have cauliflower ear.

the straps are indeed difficult to adjust because of how difficult it is to move the hard leather through the small slats. x5, including the chin guard. It literally makes your fingers hurt and is very time consuming. I recall going to tournaments as a coach and a few wrestlers buying them and coming to me to adjust the straps. Painful! But as already stated, once it fits, it doesn't move or come apart, it fits.

    Ed Ruth...what could have been?

Ed Ruth graduated in 2014 and made the world team the same year. If he'd have stuck with freestyle for more than five minutes, he could have been as good as anyone, but he clearly wasn't interested. He barely scratched the surface of his wrestling potential.

Doing the most with the least

One AA overall. Konrad Dudziak, who was runner up and 4th place. The program was founded in 1929 to add context. What Lanham has accomplished with this run is quite unprecedented, especially considering the resources given to the program

if they had awarded the Hodge in '94, might have been like this season is having to choose between two guys from same team. I am a huge Fried fan but as far as hypothetical Hodge award for that season something tells me 4 timer Pat Smith might have received the award.

I always found being a lefty was an advantage, especially on top. Sometimes, after a take down,if we went out of bounds,I'd go rigthty. Then next period, lefty.

Dake went up because he had no chance of beating Burroughs and had a decent shot of beating Cox who's far larger. If theyre the same size Dake wins. As for his senior year Cox barely survived a match against freshman Kollin Moore. We'll agree to disagree but Nolf is a better folk style wrestler hands down.

    Ed Ruth...what could have been?

Well, I always thought Ed Ruth was going to have great success on the Senior Level, but I guess it wasn't to be. As far as Freestyle scoring is concerned, I agree it can get a little subjective, and hopefully they make progress in cleaning that up, but I like what they have done with Freestyle since the ball drop era. Lastly, it can depend on who's wrestling, but generally, I would rather watch a Freestyle match than Folk style.

So I’m in a good position to answer this. I wrestled right leg lead up until my sophomore year of HS then I switched to left leg lead for the remainder of HS and college. The main difference for offense is the ease to getting to a single leg. A lot of the time you don’t need a set up and can just be more based on timing.( ala Logan Stieber) It’s obviously harder to get to your high crotch and I found unless I hit it off an elbow pass or underhook I couldn’t get to it. Although I did get quite good at getting to it off the underhook and guys aren’t used to fighting off a high crotch to their left leg. Made finishing a lot easier. The big big difference on defense is you have to be very disciplined with closing the gap and not reaching. If you reach to close the gap you’re getting single legged by a good wrestler. Hand fighting can be a big advantage as most people don’t handfight well with their left hand. If you can win the handfight with your left on their right most guys are lost. So being dominate with the left gives you a chance to win that side.

    Ed Ruth...what could have been?

Ed really didn't transition to freestyle well. He could score, but he kept his hips too high and was turned easily. I think the match with Reader was indicvidive of Ruth's freestyle career. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

Alan Fried. National Champ '94.' 129-6. Five losses to the same guy. Unfortunately the first year for the 'Hodge' was '95.' Maybe this was posted? If so, I missed it. Voting for this season. 2019 Bo Nickal 197 Penn State Bo Nickal (37), Jason Nolf (10), Co-Winner Nickal/Nolf (4), Yianni Diakomihalis (0), Anthony Ashnault (0)

I will agree with half of this. I agree that you can't just "add" two points that weren't there. The score is the score on the board. At the same time, I disagree that you are so confidently predicting the dynamic of the match changed. By saying that you are doing the same thing those who saying "Nolf lost" are doing. If Hidley gets that takedown I am not convinced Nolf turns it into a different gear and rattles off three takedowns. If he could have done that, he would have because that is what he does. Give a lot of credit to Hidley in that match. I think that was one of those "I'm putting every ounce of blood sweat and tears" into this match. Even if they had wrestled again the next day, the match most likely been much different. It is disrespectful to Hidley and the competitor he is to assume Nolf would have found another gear if he was losing. Mainly, because the Nolf we all watch finds that gear regardless.

If not the best to never win, he was certainly the funnest and most exciting wrestler I’ve ever watched. I only got to see him live once against VT his redshirt freshman year. Brascetta who was a bad dude couldn’t beat him, so you could tell he was gonna be a special wrestler

Definitely agree. Nolf and Ruth are probably neck and neck in this category. Unfortunately, both had phenomenal teammates.

    Space Around Mat

the 5-foot rule probably has not changed over time, while the rules regarding allowing action to continue out of bounds have changed dramatically. action on adjacent mats always presents the possibility of intrusion, while score tables and other items (scoreclock towers) are usually far too close. not only does it present a danger to the athletes, but these days, that equipment can be pretty expensive to replace. lastly, the closer to the mat that the score table is placed, the more restricted the view of any bleacher fans sitting behind that table. although not aesthetically pleasing, the placement off a scoretable slightly off-center would maximize the distance from the circle. while greater spacing is always preferred, sometimes the venue does not allow much room (as was stated in a prior post about hockey rink dimensions). if maintaining OOB rules, perhaps it is time to look at shrinking the circle a little...at least such that a person of average height who still has a foot in bounds can't be hitting their head on a table.

It means they have good coaching. If it was just this class it might be a MO thing but Coach Smith and Co have a proven track record. They’re very very good at coaching.

It makes no sense for Bo Nickal to sacrifice one of his (at most!) two shots at the Olympics out of respect for his teammate. He might move up if he knows he cant beat him, but he wont move up because he doesnt want to compete with him.

My most exciting match was at Auburn Hills, Darrion Caldwell vs. Ryan Lang, (I think quarterfinals)
  48. 1 point
Ok, but once again with the circular reasoning. That is not news dude. You are making a point that is irrelevant to what I am talking about. In the last ten years 3 coaches have won NCAA titles and one of them is Brands. In the last 10 years, which only counts one of Tom's titles he averages the 2nd best finish at Nationals of any other coach. Cael-2.3 Ryan- 6.4 J. Smith- 4.9 Koll- 5.4 Brands- 3.3 Going off of merit that is still pretty damn good performance, and it is insane that people like you would suggest he is getting a pass because he was Hawkeye wrestler. He shouldn't be put on a timeline because right now he is one of the top coaches in the country. It would be pretty damn risky to take on a new coach when the old one was that good. There are more challenges at Iowa than there were when he showed up. Recruiting is not reliable in state. There is a dynasty in the recruiting hot bed and PSU has been dominating recruiting nationally. Brands and Iowa seem to be trying to address that issue. Look at their line-up. You would need to bring on a guy who can overcome that challenge better than Brands and it is a tall task. You have a simple minded solution and fail to even consider the changing wrestling landscape.

    Most ambitious D1 wrestler ever...

As far as ambition goes, those guys don't impress. Why? Because they were supremely talented wrestlers. It would've almost been more of a surprise if neither of those guys ever became world champs (a bit of an overstatement, but I'm trying to make a point). I'm more impressed with a guy like Mark Schultz, from that perspective. From what I understand he started out as terrible, and eventually he made it to the top of the podium at the Olympics.
