The only reason they would be wrestling off is if they lose at final x at the weight they already chose. Pat Downey did significantly more towards winning the 86 kg spot than other WTT winners by actually wrestling 86 kg. Also, USA did not give DT a bye. He earned it through pre-set criteria (like the one you're arguing against right now). Remove DT from the field and there's nobody sitting in final x. Downey wins the open. Heflin wins the trials, Downey beats him at final x. What you are arguing for is either the ability to lose a tournament (the trials process in this case) and then reenter that same tournament at a different weight you might think you can win at for a second chance or the ability to change weights in the middle of a tournament because you found out the competition was easier at a different weight. Nonsense either way. We have a trials process for a reason: transparency and fairness. If the point is only to send the best team, we might as well just have the coaches pick whoever they think matches up best internationally or who has the best results.

You can't change weights mid-process because you lose and think you might be able to beat the guy at a weight next to yours. Downey won the 86 kg spot by winning the US Open and then the trials, and now final x where he will essentially accept 2 forfeits from DT. It's against the ethic of the sport and would set up potentially disastrous situations down the road if they were to allow Nickal or Ringer to wrestle off Downey despite neither of them ever wrestling 86 kg. You'd have guys asking for special wrestle offs every year. The only reason people are having this conversation is because Downey rubs people the wrong way. It's not like he's some scrub. He's a junior world silver medalist, has a great freestyle skillset, and is an amazing athlete. I think we're going to be fine there this year. He's not a bad second option behind DT.

DT debacle puts emphasis on shortcomings of the Final X format. Saylor has an interesting idea--each bracket comprises 8 persons, each match-up contested best of three--which I think would be even better if the bracket were to include the Final X bye recipient. My opinion: Latest iteration of qualifying sequence--first Nationals then Trials then Final X--is way too drawn out. It's difficult to keep track of which stakes apply to which preliminary event (e.g., U.S. Open winner gets bye to Final X? Gets bye to WTT?) and it's downright tiring to keep track of coverage/happenings throughout the entire multi-month proceeding! It's all the more confusing because tourney stakes differ from one weight class to another (which will be the case so long as Team U.S.A. wrestlers win medals in some--but not all--weight classes). I like Willie's idea so long as the 'favored' person competes in WTT alongside other entrants. Everything best-of-three would be way more fan friendly than is the current format. Oh and just to be clear: It's not the case that Saylor proposes World Team Trials goes best-of-three everything. He wrote a tweet along the line of "If I had my way it'd be [smaller brackets] and [best of three]" -- i.e., he was spitballing, thinking aloud. I don't mean for my post here to misrepresent what he wrote.

DT out for this year’s worlds

It's very unfortunate how people pretend to know all about someone's past. Downey was in a few street fights while teenager in high school, but, fortunately, arrests don't always equal convictions, and he has none. He was wrongfully denied wrestling his entire senior year of high school, but still found a way to win NHSCA Senior Nationals, USAW Junior Nationals, FILA Junior Nationals, JWTT and, lastly, a silver medal at the Junior Worlds, in that order. Although he has had some social media snafus, I really don't see where he has done anything to warrant such animosity towards himself. The guy seems to love his sport, has never had a single unsportsmanlike call, always seems to rebound from adversity, brings a lot of excitement to the mat, is very tough, and thrives on winning and becoming the very best in the world. I'd say for a lot of you it's time for a mirror check.

Its definitely a strawman. You were responding to me weren't you? I didnt say anything about that, but it's the same routine, same old song and dance to try to take as many shots at Iowa fans as possible. The idea that this is going to sink Iowa's recruiting is completely baseless. There is absolutely no precedent to back what you are saying. You are treating your opinion as fact. Do they have better recruiting than Iowa? It should be better than Iowa right? However the rule you are applying to Iowa is "if Iowa doesnt do freestyle in 2019 their recruiting will be hurt". "Well that's not the case for PSU" "Yeah but they win titles" "Ok well nebby does lots of freestyle, why aren't they number one in recruiting every year?" "Bc they dont develop" Freestyle participation is not quite as big of a deal as you are making it out to be. There are plenty more variables at play. It would be stupid to assume that the recruiting is going to go down the toilet because of this one tournament. Iowa has one of the most talented teams this upcoming year. They have done very well in recruiting. Do I think Mekhi winning a world title helped VT. Honestly? Not really. Other then people with their finger on the pulse of the sport, was his performance really common knowledge? How many big recruits do you think actually watched him win it? Him winning an NCAA title is a much bigger deal for VT. Kerkvlevit probably went to tOSU for a lot of reason. I dont think he went their because they had X amount of wrestlers at WTT last year. If Cassioppi would win a junior title, it would be great for Iowa, but it would be better for Iowa if he does well at NCAAs next year. Iowa is not hurt in recruiting, except forfeiting some opportunity in favor of NCAA performance. However let's be honest here. This is one year. They had a guy on the junior and senior team last year. Yeah they had some guys sit this year and dont always have their whole team wrestle free, but you dont have a clue why that is. You dont know if its athletes or coaches decisions. You dont know about injuries or anything else. The people that are the ones concerned here are the ussuals who hate on Iowa on this board all the time. This isn't a group of concerned wrestling fans. It's a group of Iowa haters reveling in the narrative they have created. We are talking in circles, mostly because you have a very vague narrative going where you keep moving the goal post, and the entire thing is based on your opinion.

The criteria is not silly. He is limiting the candidates to people in this century so we don't have to listen to people talk about how hard it was to overcome horsehair mat burns and woolen singlet chafing!

    Iran Wrestling News

Iran FS at the Sassari ranking tournament. 57 - Hajaghania beat Sarlak then lost to a Canadian. In the end he got a bronze. This guy is very bad. 61 - Yakhkeshi wins gold at 61 but is disqualified for wearing a T shirt on the podium. Apparently you have to be wearing the full track suit. Firstly I am not sure when this rule came about or started to be enforced, as I have seen multiple wrestlers wear a T shirt on the podium and not be disqualified, including Hajaghania in this same tournament when he recieved his bronze. Second, why have this stupid rule? And third, UWW claims they warned Yakhkeshi multiple times. We all know that in the past 40 years Iranian people are very good at listening when somebody tells them how they are allowed to dress! So i am surprised if they told him and he refused. 65 - Lost immediately in controversial fashion to Kazakh. I think he won the match but overall Yazdani is nowhere close to seniors. Even at juniors he would struggle a lot. 70 - Beat a Russian then then lost to Bulgaria. I heard he got disqualified but it seems they let him come back and wrestle as he won bronze. 74 - Nokhodi won 10 - 0 against a wrestler from Turkmenistan ( who looked about as young as him) before losing 6 - 0 against Tsabalov. He mostly just held position and defended against Tsabalov. Tsabalov then lost to Chamizo and eliminated Nokhodi. 86 - Bazri won gold over Daulatbekov 19 - 10. He almost lost by 10 points but came back in the end. Bazri is not bad but not close to the level of Yazdani or Ghasempour. You can't give up that many points to a wrestler at the level of Daulatbekov. 92 - Karimi won comfortably. Including an easy win over Mohebi. I'm sure Karimi will be the 92 at worlds. 97 - All Iran final between Talebi and Foroutan and Talebi again beat him easily. Foroutan had a win over that tough Mongolian on his way to the final.

    Chael Sonnen Comments on BTS

Your opinion of Chael and Joe Rogan is your own. A lot of people respect Joe Rogan and his opinion. He is the #1 podcaster in the world for a reason. Chael has his shady side and nobody can deny that, but when he is right, he is right. The truth can come from anywhere, and he is right on almost everything he said in this video.

I thought self-righteous types believe in forgiveness and redemption. Anyone who isn’t rooting for Downey is flat out un-American. He’s our guy-we all should support him. If he screws up, then you can criticize him.

I guess it depends on your definition of "on the mat." I'm not immediately coming up with a sportsmanship issue during or after a match (other than Heflin, although from what we know, that may have been more Heflin's bad behavior). This doesn't mean there aren't others during matches that I don't know about, but I don't think that's the only relevant issue. Certainly things like street fights, arrests, and revenge porn tapes aren't on the mat and aren't directly related to wrestling, although I'd hope we agree that it's not helpful to the sport to have prominent wrestlers involved in these. But there are plenty of wrestling related controversies that aren't necessarily about something that happened during a match, and these do seem relevant to a wrestling board discussion about controversy around a wrestler. I won't attempt to provide details. Instead I'll just quote the wrestler in question's tweet from a few hours ago, in which he referenced "my fall outs @ Nebraska, Iowa State, & Iowa." Self described "fall outs @" three of the best programs in the country -- two of them run by Olympic gold medalists, the other by the coach of the most decorated current wrestler in the U.S. -- to me would, whether or not it specifically involved a sportsmanship issue during or immediately after a match, demonstrate a historically bad pattern of "issues" involving the wrestler's attitude and/or relationship with the sport itself.

    Chael Sonnen Comments on BTS

Yeah I don't think Chael is coming at it from a bad place-I think he genuinely wants to make things better. It's good for the sport and event to have evaluation like this. There's a lot of merit to his criticism. With that said-Chael's a mixed bag for me...he obviously speaks his mind-sometimes that's super entertaining and informative, other times it's too much. He's a sensationalist and is often times a liar...which is ironic-because his claim is that he's speaking the raw truth. I try not to "throw the baby out with bathwater" when it comes to him.

You really have to hurt yourself stretching to pretend that Taylor wasn't being a dick here. Of course he was! And Downey earned every bit of that dickishness from Taylor. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

DT out for this year’s worlds

First, this is very sad news especially considering he got hurt at a charity event. Bad news for USA wrestling as it significantly decreases our chances at a team title and you have to feel bad for Taylor. The biggest thing I don’t get though is that he either didn’t let Nickal know or Nickal still chose to stay up? I mean DT had to get an MRI within 24 hours. And you have to think that Nickal could make 86 if he really wanted to. He’s got a much better chance against PD3 than Cox. The only thing I can think of is that DT didn’t want Nickal there because he was nervous he might get a medal and get a bye to final X over him

DT out for this year’s worlds

Well said. Usually I know who our world team member at each weight is by this point in the selection process. There are 4 weights where I honestly don't know who will win. Fix/Gilman, Yianni/Zain, Kyle/Alex, and while the last two weights are fairly good bets for the returning medalists, I wouldn't be shocked if one of them doesn't get upset, just because Bo and Gable are that special. I've never seen anything like this. I've seen weights like with Dziedzic, Schalles, Kemp, but never this kind of team balance and depth.

I’m a DT fan but disappointed about the “gift” comment. PD earned his way to this spot and overcame challenges along the way. No one gave him any respect and certainly didn’t gift him a spot. Yes DT would have likely won but he didn’t and to put PD down when he did nothing wrong against DT was classless.
