    FinalX Rutgers Picks

Managed to injure myself this week so I can’t make the trip in person, but that also means I have no plans on Saturday (can’t even go to the gym) so I’ll just be focused on FinalX (the girlfriend is really excited...) Session One – Noon ET Bout 1: Men’s GR 87 kg – Joe Rau vs. Ben Provisor 50/50 match. Both veterans. Both super likable Bout 2: Women’s FS 72 kg – Alyvia Fiske vs. Victoria Francis Fiske has had quite the post season making the U23 and junior team after placing 3rd as a freshman in college. Toss up but hoping to see what Fiske can do internationally Bout 3: Men’s GR 82 kg – Kendrick Sanders vs. John Stefanowicz i like Kendrick’s big love potential. We are pretty weak at this weight. Hoping Kendrick has fix that . John is good. Positionally sound. He is unlikely to medal though Bout 4: Men’s GR 55 kg – Max Nowry vs. Brady koontz Brady is an underdog. He did come out of nowhere as a 3rd stringer at tOSU in folk. He and his brother have jumped levels in Greco at Ohio state. No idea how that happened, but I hope to see his new gut working against world guys. Nowry is solid though. Tough matchup Bout 5: Men’s GR 67 kg – Ellis Coleman vs. Jamel Johnson Coleman is one of our best Greco guys. Jamel is surging but he has looked vulnerable. Bout 6: Women’s FS 57 kg – Becka Leathers vs. Jenna Burkert toss up. Leathers won most recently and has a world medal a couple of years ago. Either winner will be a medal threat Session Two – 6:00 PM ET Bout 1: Women’s FS 65 kg – Forrest Molinari vs. Maya Nelson Maya is one of the best prospects we have. I would not be shocked if she took this, but Molinari is top 5ish in the world and has been fairly dominant over Maya. Problem is, Maya jumps levels constantly. Either one is a medal threat. Bout 2: Men’s GR 77 kg – Kamal Bey vs. Pat Smith Kamal is too good for Smith at this point. Smith can score on Kamal but Kamal beats almost anyone who opens up on him. I’m really hoping this is the year Kamal breaks through on the senior stage. He is one of the best Greco prospects we’ve had. He will also bring a lot of fans into Greco with his style, but he has to win for that to happen Bout 3: Women’s FS 68 kg – Tamyra Mensah-Stock vs. Alexandria Glaude Tamyra will win world gold this year. I know I know...but she will Bout 4: Women’s FS 50 kg – Whitney Conder vs. Victoria Anthony seems like a dumb pick because Conder is like 5-0 against Victoria, but Victory seems to be closing the gap. I also think her new training and nutrition tweaks are making a difference. Either winner is a medal threat Bout 5: Men’s FS 125 kg – Nick Gwiazdowski vs. Gable Steveson Man I’m torn here. I’ll go with the proven Gwiz. It’s rare for returning medalists (from the year prior) to lose. 125kg in particular is a tough weight for younger guys like gable. That said, in an unprecedented era for USA wrestling, Gable might be the best USA prospect ever. Cannot wait for this one. Either guy will medal at worlds unless they get a terrible draw. When these guys trained at the OTC 2 years ago, Gable pushed Gwiz apparently. This was right around when Gwiz won world bronze...and Gable was 16/17. Absolutely crazy Bout 6: Men’s FS 65 kg – Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Zain Retherford Yianni has this thing about him. He just wins even when he isn’t the better guy. JO beats him in the room. Molinaro is an Olympian and has insane power and speed, Zain is supposed to take over the spot, Bajrang is a returning world silver...even going to college, Yianni at 18 in his worse style came from behind against 3 guys in a row to win the title. Zain on paper has a great shot at winning. He was beating Yianni most of their match and was able to finish cleanly. Somehow Yianni will pull this off. Yianni is a serious medal threat, but this is the most stacked weight at worlds. I’m not sure if Zain medals if he beats Yianni - styles make fights (matches?) Bout 7: Men’s FS 92 kg – J’den Cox vs. Bo Nickal I have underestimated both guys consistently. I have no idea where Bo is against the best. It would be cool if we had seen him go live with Taylor or something. I’m sure these guys have trained together quite a bit. This is a tough matchup for both. I’m curious to see if Jden’s laces work. Not sure how this plays out, but Cox is the safe pick. He is very hard to score on and is getting to his offense more and more often. Bronze-bronze-gold is an incredible run. Very few Americans have won 3 medals in a row, but the list really thins out at 4 - 4 is a huge hurdle. If Jden wins worlds, he goes from “glad we have him” to “top 10 all time”. He silently is becoming one of our best ever. Glad Bo is there to push him.

    Downey Making Weight...

Not much of a mystery really. He would just go back to completing his degree at Princeton and then move on to taking a high paying job on Wall Street.

Brayton Lee will be a freshman this year, right? I would add him to your list.

The fact that you named national champs at each body type, that should tell you that there isn't a "best" body type.

Imo freestyle is just a better more entertaining product.

    Top Freshman 2019/2020

Which freshman starters are you most excited about? Will any win a title? I think Sasso at 149 is extremely interesting. Carr if he goes 157 can win a title at his best. I think he will at some point. Trent Hidlay at 184 is going to give people issues. Beard if he starts looks to have jumped levels Aaron Brooks same story as beard. High bonus potential I think this kid is going to spearhead the next gen of psu hammers stanford has 2 guys - Real Woods and Shane Griffith. Both looked amazing during their redshirt year ASU might start have 4. Teemer is incredible. Needs to work out a couple glaring issues, but he is extremely talented and developed his own style. Chlebove could smash people. His top game is an X factor. He could go 133 or 141. I think Camacho from nc state has potential. Pat McKee is fun to watch, but has taken a bunch of losses recently Who else?

    Downey Making Weight...

So, no one has been able to answer the hypothetical: "What happens if Downey doesn't make weight?" I really don't care one way or another, but just find the whole process a bit odd.

Does Zain have a shot against Yianni?

Has anyone *ever* turned Yianni from top in a folkstyle match? Like, since 7th grade? I doubt it. But, yeah, Zain could do it often enough to get a tech fall against him.

I have very high confidence that Cassioppi will AA for Iowa, time will tell how high. I don't think a top 4 or 5 finish is unrealistic. He has the tools to beat most at the weight, but definitely takes risks and sometimes unnecessarily puts himself in precarious situations that cost him a match or two.

Wow! Is there anything Gretzky can't do?

Nah, very little chance he techs or pins Bo. I’m thinking 3-4 point margin in both matches. Still taking J’den in two though.

The best wrestlers are the ones that develop a style that takes advantage of their body type to optimize skill. Off hand, on the world level you see a burroughs who is quick, explosive, and has long arms. His style is perfectly adapted to work with his body type. Tsargush is long and lean, and you can see how he uses that to his advantage to get takedowns. Yowlys Bonne is short, compact, and powerful and all his moves play to his strengths. I don't believe Tsargush could be a world champ wrestling like Burroughs, nor Buroughs wrestling like Tsargush. There doesn't seem to be one style or body type that dominates all, but if there was wrestling would be way less entertaining.

    Downey Making Weight...

If KS and Cox both medal this year, they will combine for 9 world/Olympic medals going into the final X match, along with 6 NCAA titles as well .

A kid I had beaten badly several times... In his home gym, rolled through a cradle and the ref slapped the mat. No way a pin. Tarnished a perfect season.

And Taylor should also have to weigh-in to qualify his National Team spot.

    Downey Making Weight...

Pics are deceiving but it sure does look like Askren may be right about Cox headed to 86 next year. Downey looks to be in the best physical condition I’ve ever seen him.

He could weigh-in fully clothed. HOWEVER, if Downey must weigh-in, so should Taylor in order to qualify his #2 spot on the National Team.

Zain has a chance, but he is more "Metcalf" than I like from neutral. Straight forward, grind you out if he can. Not very creative, etc etc... I like Yianni's chances more vs elite competition so I hope he wins. But the gap isn't anymore than a take-down if there is any. It's a toss. It's like Zain is 50/50 with the top 20 guys in the world. He will be defensive, stable, and beat 10 and lose to 10 who knows which ones. I feel like Yainni is 70/30 with the top 10. Where he wins more often than he loses to the toughest opponents. Here's hoping it doesn't land on Heads 2x out of 3 for ZainTrain

OK, my bad. Anyhow, it was a tight match. Of course Zain has a chance.

The Tiger Woods analogy is bogus. The World Championships don't get rescheduled because a wrestler is injured. They just happen. The "competition" in question here is basically an internal wrestle-off to decide our rep for the Worlds. If that process cannot have some flexibility to allow for the best possible team to represent our country, then we are doing ourselves a huge disservice. By that train of thought, in addition to scrapping the right to postpone, we should also scrap the byes for world medalists, the best of 3 format, etc. Winner of the US Open is our rep....

downey has to wrestle off with the best top 2 of the weight classes above and below him, then best of 3 with Yazdani, just to get a shot at a recovered David Taylor in 2020 before he can make this year's team.

Rob Koll. No one else routinely turns top 50-100 recruits (or lower into NCAA champs): Freidman, Leen, Simaz, Bosak, Garrett.
