    FinalX Rutgers Picks

Managed to injure myself this week so I can’t make the trip in person, but that also means I have no plans on Saturday (can’t even go to the gym) so I’ll just be focused on FinalX (the girlfriend is really excited...) Session One – Noon ET Bout 1: Men’s GR 87 kg – Joe Rau vs. Ben Provisor 50/50 match. Both veterans. Both super likable Bout 2: Women’s FS 72 kg – Alyvia Fiske vs. Victoria Francis Fiske has had quite the post season making the U23 and junior team after placing 3rd as a freshman in college. Toss up but hoping to see what Fiske can do internationally Bout 3: Men’s GR 82 kg – Kendrick Sanders vs. John Stefanowicz i like Kendrick’s big love potential. We are pretty weak at this weight. Hoping Kendrick has fix that . John is good. Positionally sound. He is unlikely to medal though Bout 4: Men’s GR 55 kg – Max Nowry vs. Brady koontz Brady is an underdog. He did come out of nowhere as a 3rd stringer at tOSU in folk. He and his brother have jumped levels in Greco at Ohio state. No idea how that happened, but I hope to see his new gut working against world guys. Nowry is solid though. Tough matchup Bout 5: Men’s GR 67 kg – Ellis Coleman vs. Jamel Johnson Coleman is one of our best Greco guys. Jamel is surging but he has looked vulnerable. Bout 6: Women’s FS 57 kg – Becka Leathers vs. Jenna Burkert toss up. Leathers won most recently and has a world medal a couple of years ago. Either winner will be a medal threat Session Two – 6:00 PM ET Bout 1: Women’s FS 65 kg – Forrest Molinari vs. Maya Nelson Maya is one of the best prospects we have. I would not be shocked if she took this, but Molinari is top 5ish in the world and has been fairly dominant over Maya. Problem is, Maya jumps levels constantly. Either one is a medal threat. Bout 2: Men’s GR 77 kg – Kamal Bey vs. Pat Smith Kamal is too good for Smith at this point. Smith can score on Kamal but Kamal beats almost anyone who opens up on him. I’m really hoping this is the year Kamal breaks through on the senior stage. He is one of the best Greco prospects we’ve had. He will also bring a lot of fans into Greco with his style, but he has to win for that to happen Bout 3: Women’s FS 68 kg – Tamyra Mensah-Stock vs. Alexandria Glaude Tamyra will win world gold this year. I know I know...but she will Bout 4: Women’s FS 50 kg – Whitney Conder vs. Victoria Anthony seems like a dumb pick because Conder is like 5-0 against Victoria, but Victory seems to be closing the gap. I also think her new training and nutrition tweaks are making a difference. Either winner is a medal threat Bout 5: Men’s FS 125 kg – Nick Gwiazdowski vs. Gable Steveson Man I’m torn here. I’ll go with the proven Gwiz. It’s rare for returning medalists (from the year prior) to lose. 125kg in particular is a tough weight for younger guys like gable. That said, in an unprecedented era for USA wrestling, Gable might be the best USA prospect ever. Cannot wait for this one. Either guy will medal at worlds unless they get a terrible draw. When these guys trained at the OTC 2 years ago, Gable pushed Gwiz apparently. This was right around when Gwiz won world bronze...and Gable was 16/17. Absolutely crazy Bout 6: Men’s FS 65 kg – Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Zain Retherford Yianni has this thing about him. He just wins even when he isn’t the better guy. JO beats him in the room. Molinaro is an Olympian and has insane power and speed, Zain is supposed to take over the spot, Bajrang is a returning world silver...even going to college, Yianni at 18 in his worse style came from behind against 3 guys in a row to win the title. Zain on paper has a great shot at winning. He was beating Yianni most of their match and was able to finish cleanly. Somehow Yianni will pull this off. Yianni is a serious medal threat, but this is the most stacked weight at worlds. I’m not sure if Zain medals if he beats Yianni - styles make fights (matches?) Bout 7: Men’s FS 92 kg – J’den Cox vs. Bo Nickal I have underestimated both guys consistently. I have no idea where Bo is against the best. It would be cool if we had seen him go live with Taylor or something. I’m sure these guys have trained together quite a bit. This is a tough matchup for both. I’m curious to see if Jden’s laces work. Not sure how this plays out, but Cox is the safe pick. He is very hard to score on and is getting to his offense more and more often. Bronze-bronze-gold is an incredible run. Very few Americans have won 3 medals in a row, but the list really thins out at 4 - 4 is a huge hurdle. If Jden wins worlds, he goes from “glad we have him” to “top 10 all time”. He silently is becoming one of our best ever. Glad Bo is there to push him.

    Women's College Wrestling

Now that the NCAA has given women's wrestling a D1 emerging sports status it will be interesting to see who jumps on board. I would like to see the Big 10 endorse it as a conference sport to force the entire conference to add it. Nationally, that would say a lot.

It's journalistic malpractice that Flo agreed to take part in covering up his injury and also to publish this video that gives no information. It's the kind of thing that keeps wrestling from being taken seriously. This would never happen in a major sport. Anyone who currently claims to be a "wrestling reporter" should turn in his credential if he/she either a. knew about the injury and kept it quiet or b. didn't try to find out the story.

    #NCAAforFreestyle?

Man do I EVER disagree with freestyle being a better product, let alone much better. All it really is, is a takedown contest with a little bit of sumo thrown in. Unless you want to count leg laces and trap arm guts, usually right off takedowns, as mat wrestling. If you don't score quickly an almost arbitrary decision is made to put someone on the clock. If they continue to not score, again, an almost arbitrary decision is made to put someone on the clock and it usually ends up being the other guy. And guess what? The other guy would win if the score ends up 1-1 to because neither scored when they were on the shot clock. Don't forget how convoluted tie-breakers can get. Score ends 6-6? Yep there is still a winner. But, did he score last? Or did he score the only 2 point move? 4 point move? Oh wait, was he cautioned? If you want wrestling to be the most simplistic it can be from a scoring perspective, I somewhat get why you follow freestyle. But, I don't want the actual wrestling to be as simple to view as it can be. I don't like the, "You took me down so I will quickly lay flat until I quickly get my chance to take you down!" philosophy. To me, Wrestling has always been about CONTROLLING your opponent. Without Folkstyle mat wrestling, I just don't see how that is done...................

    Top Freshman 2019/2020

Which freshman starters are you most excited about? Will any win a title? I think Sasso at 149 is extremely interesting. Carr if he goes 157 can win a title at his best. I think he will at some point. Trent Hidlay at 184 is going to give people issues. Beard if he starts looks to have jumped levels Aaron Brooks same story as beard. High bonus potential I think this kid is going to spearhead the next gen of psu hammers stanford has 2 guys - Real Woods and Shane Griffith. Both looked amazing during their redshirt year ASU might start have 4. Teemer is incredible. Needs to work out a couple glaring issues, but he is extremely talented and developed his own style. Chlebove could smash people. His top game is an X factor. He could go 133 or 141. I think Camacho from nc state has potential. Pat McKee is fun to watch, but has taken a bunch of losses recently Who else?

That’s your opinion. But the fact remains they were fully compliant with the rules. You cannot disagree with that. And if you want to change competitive behavior, you do not hope for competitors to follow the spirit of optimal sportsmanship, whatever that means to you. You change the rules.

Correct, that was an understatement. I had originally typed "ridiculous," but changed it out of my affection for Dake and to try to keep the rhetoric from exploding as it does sometimes here. But you're correct and I probably just should have said "ridiculous," because it was ridiculous, such as: (1) the meandering obfuscation of Dake's explanations with no real follow up by Bader; (2) the bizarre statement, that Dake and Dean were separated during practice on purpose from the rest of the team, a team that Dake is an assistant coach of, so that Dake couldn't be touched, with no follow up from Bader; (3) the remarkable statement that one of the team's assistant coaches at least once didn't travel with the team and coach at a match his team was wrestling, solely so that no one outside of his team (which he disclosed had been subject to an aggressive gag rule) could know about his injury, with no follow up by Bader. Several posts have correctly made light out of Flo's, and particularly Bader's, approach. These have been all totally warranted, and I say this as someone who loves Flo just as he loves Dake. Whether they are journalists or not (I think Pyles made a big deal out of them not being journalists), the standard has got to be, what questions do the people who are going to be watching want asked, and what information do they want to get out of watching this. And Bader's interview does not come close to meeting that test, as many of us have said. Again, Dake has got to protect Dake's interests. He can say what he wants. I agree with others that there are legitimate competitive concerns about public knowledge of injuries. That's why he put out the content-less instagram post. But he then chose to do an interview. Journalist or no, I don't see how it's ok that Bader doesn't make some effort to ask, for starters, oh, I don't know, Hey Kyle, what's your injury? I think he should have asked that and a bunch of other questions, including some pertaining to my points 2 and 3, above. If I wanted to hear Kyle Dake talking while watching beautiful scenery while receiving no real information about why he's not wrestling this weekend, I could have loaded an old interview of his onto my phone, used my earbuds, and taken my dogs for a walk in the woods. And I say this as someone who likes Bader, too. I think a lot of his long-form pieces, like Terry and Kolat, are terrific. And I don't mind the puff-piece remote interviews he does. But Flo needs to manage him correctly and put him in places where he is strong and not in places where he isn't. You can't have him do this type of interview under these circumstances and completely abdicate on tough questions. And, I'll use this as an opportunity to also say that you shouldn't have him doing play-by-play of really important matches, the live broadcast of which are Flo's crown jewel, when you have much better options (better voices, more professional in their delivery, don't make it about them, don't make sophomoric jokes during live action involving amazing wrestlers, provide more information in more concise manner, modulate their presentation instead of screaming everything, so that when something amazing happens, the raised voice actually means something, etc.). OK time to get off the soapbox. Enjoy Final X everyone; Dake was correct that there are still some great matchups this weekend.

You are "sure" that Ringer "probably" knew.. Man, you are no more coherent than Dake. I would think that if Dake was trying to keep a secret from anyone, Ringer would be the first on his list.
  16. 1 point
Great summary. Strange is an understatement. So many things that he said were either (a) suspicious, or (b) blatantly disingenuous. These guys are treating their injuries like they're guarding the codes to the enigma machine, like, dude, you're competing in amateur wrestling, not uncovering a secret military coup. He would have liked to make this announcement sooner but couldn't because of.... paperwork? Yeahhhhhh... ok. Wanted to wrestle at final X, wasn't sure if he'd be close to 100%? And then says it's obviously best for him to delay the wrestle off as long as possible... so which is it? And Fargo is apparently too soon. Puzzling that he even agreed to do this interview. If he didn't want to be forthright he might has well have never said anything at all, that's what he's been doing for the past 7 months anyway. This whole "shroud of secrecy" culture that some of our biggest wrestling programs perpetuate is so stupid. What was he hoping? Ringer and Zahid would go 86? Did he think someone was gonna hit him with a leg kick to his ACL if they knew he was hurt?

  23. 1 point
That's what it sounds like. There is a video on Flo, Bader interviewing Dake. I say this as a giant Dake fan. This is a strange interview. Dake spends over 4 minutes telling an endless story, much of it completely irrelevant to what anyone watching it would want to know -- his vacation, his wife's pregnancy, something about a plastic surgeon, etc. In the relevant part it sounds like a 300 pound heavyweight landed on him. The injury is never identified, or if it was, I missed it. He says he saw a doctor that Yianni saw, so probably a knee. He goes on a long tangent about how the plastic surgeon told his surgeon that this was important. (Really? Major surgery? Major surgery on a world champion professional athlete?) This part of the story is told so strangely that it could create the inference that the surgery didn't go well despite the fact that the surgeon was carefully chosen. He spools out indirectly that he had surgery and was on crutches for six weeks, but the type of surgery isn't identified, or if it was, I missed it. At one point he compares the situation with what would have happened if LeBron James got hurt practicing. I'm not sure if he's trying to say that it's the same or different, because, like the rest of the interview, he failed to use a single declarative sentence to express himself in a clear way. Regardless, I'll use the comparison to make a point. If this happened to one of the best athletes in any other sport, I doubt that, even without missing a scheduled competition as a result, he would go this far without mentioning it -- and certainly, no interviewer would allow him to ramble on in a 20 minute interview without asking for details and more clarification. The secrecy part is remarkable. He talks about how all Cornell wrestlers were instructed not to say a word to anyone after there was a leak. He talks about how he -- as an assistant coach for Cornell -- did not attend and coach at meets where he would have to use his crutches, so that no one could know he was hurt. Etc. Also notable is how he explains that, on the day of the injury, he and Max Dean had been set up in a far corner of the room, with no one else close by, presumably so that Dake couldn't get hurt, which makes the injury even more freaky. "We explicitly planned to keep everyone away from me." Huh? This is pretty strange, to arrange a college practice this way. I would have wanted the interviewer to probe that a little. Why? Was he already hurt? Had this happened before? Did they do this every day, not use all their mat space in a college practice so that their assistant coach could have more room to wrestle? I feel really bad for Dake. He's probably my favorite wrestler. I've posted repeatedly laudatory things about him here. He's had a bad run of injuries. This sounds like a particularly bad pieced of bad luck. But to me this is a perfect example of something that comes up a lot in wrestling--a lack of transparency that is very difficult for fans. I don't necessarily blame the athletes. They will do what they think is best for them within the rules. But it's a strange situation that we are trying to build fan interest in the sport, while that interest is stymied by these situations (suppression of relevant information). I certainly don't want the invasive coverage that we see when there is too much coverage. But a 20 minute interview where so little is given and, more importantly, so little is asked and followed up on, isn't sufficient. If you want to try to get a better idea of what I'm talking about, watch it for yourself. It's the lead video on Flo right now, doesn't appear to be behind the pay wall.
  24. 1 point
Well that had to be one of the strangest interviews. Dake, normally well spoken, stammered through it some how. I wonder what the real reason is. Regardless I guess we are waiting for Dake to get back in shape whenever that may be. Cant be Fargo, so... Probably september.

    #NCAAforFreestyle?

NCAA can't really go to Freestyle. Freestyle's rules are determined by UWW. The NCAA would lose control over their rules if they simply adopted whatever UWW decided would be the rules that month. And if the NCAA wanted to standardize Freestyle rules (which many in the United States would love) it wouldn't compel UWW to adhere to the rules which would just end up with two very different Freestyle forms of wrestling. The wrestling community, in the United States, is a folkstyle community. It would be rare to find an American who has wrestled Freestyle but not Folkstyle. But you can find millions who have wrestled Folkstyle and never wrestled Freestyle. It just happens that the top athletes in Folkstyle are also involved with Freestyle. Changing college wrestling to Freestyle would be a major structural change. And I doubt you would get buy-in from high school and youth programs where most of the coaches and parents have little to no experience in Freestyle. And if the feeder programs aren't changed, it would have a major impact on college wrestling. I would venture to guess there would be many programs eliminated simply due to a lack of coaching and lack of ability to recruit and retain wrestlers with Freestyle experience (though the D1 programs would remain).

I have very high confidence that Cassioppi will AA for Iowa, time will tell how high. I don't think a top 4 or 5 finish is unrealistic. He has the tools to beat most at the weight, but definitely takes risks and sometimes unnecessarily puts himself in precarious situations that cost him a match or two.

Zain has a chance, but he is more "Metcalf" than I like from neutral. Straight forward, grind you out if he can. Not very creative, etc etc... I like Yianni's chances more vs elite competition so I hope he wins. But the gap isn't anymore than a take-down if there is any. It's a toss. It's like Zain is 50/50 with the top 20 guys in the world. He will be defensive, stable, and beat 10 and lose to 10 who knows which ones. I feel like Yainni is 70/30 with the top 10. Where he wins more often than he loses to the toughest opponents. Here's hoping it doesn't land on Heads 2x out of 3 for ZainTrain

The Tiger Woods analogy is bogus. The World Championships don't get rescheduled because a wrestler is injured. They just happen. The "competition" in question here is basically an internal wrestle-off to decide our rep for the Worlds. If that process cannot have some flexibility to allow for the best possible team to represent our country, then we are doing ourselves a huge disservice. By that train of thought, in addition to scrapping the right to postpone, we should also scrap the byes for world medalists, the best of 3 format, etc. Winner of the US Open is our rep....
