I’ve argued that Askren is a generational specimen of strength and many guys here will argue against it based on their own eyeballs and even offhanded comments by Askren himself. The dude was off the charts stupid strong.

I love how people are bashing on Dake. How insecure are you behind your keyboard while mommy makes you toast. Dake has done more than any of you guys while he was still in high school [and even Jr. High]... let alone 4 NCAA titles at 4 weights [with no redshirt], and oh... moved up to beat a DT Hodge winner and future world champion several times at that. And for $&it's and giggles, he won Worlds last year without giving up a point. But you guys know better than he does. Got it. Real tough guys. Why not just look in the mirror tomorrow morning with crud in your eyes, and say to yourself: "I will never accomplish anything near what he has... maybe I should just shut up while I am ahead..." Trust me... Noone will deeply miss your critiques.

No inside info. You listed 4 of his top 5, the other being Wisconsin. Considering Penn State, Oklahoma State, and Ohio State are also on Ferrari's top 5 list, he's probably just waiting for AJ to make his decision. Oklahoma State looks to be in good position to get 1 of the 2 to add to their monster class of 2020. Penn State and Ohio State will both have strong pitches though.

You tube has a number of matches that come up under a search for "2019 Russian nationals" the finals matches that I saw there are 70 kg, 74, 86, 97 & 125 as well as a few other matches. Tsabalov was silver at 74kg - Valiev was silver at 86 kg

I think the brutality of that KO may make some wrestlers change their minds about going UFC. Especially since Ben has a really strong chin and still got blasted like that. Most notably Bo Nickal.

Isn't this belief mostly only supported by the fact that there is a giant pool of data supporting CTE for football players for many years, while we have yet to get the same kind of data for UFC fighters because the sport is still relatively young?

    Japan playoff matches

Susaki/Irie is an interesting selection dilemma: You have Susaki who is undefeated internationally, 2x world champ (aged 18 and 19) and crushed the field last time out, looks all set to be the star & 'face' of the team for your home Olympics. If I was coach I'd be completely confident of Susaki winning gold in 2020. ...but then there is Irie who must be a bad/awkward match for Susaki as they trade wins in domestic tournaments with Irie coming out on top slightly more often. However Irie has fallen short several times at the global level and has no world titles yet. If I was coach I would not be completely confident of Irie winning gold in 2020. But, she just won the selection battle again & your own rules say if she even gets a Bronze at worlds this year then she goes to Tokyo... what a headache. ;)

    Word is Dake already has a doctor's note to delay the 2nd period of the first match 24 hours just in case the 1st period score is not in his favor. ;) ;_;
  16. 1 point
Great summary, I’d also throw in better rules as a factor. Our guys always sucked at the clinches and in my opinion tended not to be very strong on the strategic aspects best of three period system. I also feel like the two point take down and push out tends to favor Americans. One famous example might be when Terry brands lost to Dabir. Brands wins that match with today’s scoring in place.

Lets look forward to 17th of next month....

Dake had one of the most dominant freestyle world championships of any American ever. Ringer gets better every year. This could be a great 3 match series, or it could play out like scorenomore thinks. Either way, I'll pull for either of them in September.

The Dake debacle has run its course for me. The rules will change out of necessity next year and we'll all be a little weaker because of it. It is time to pick sides. I'm going with Ringer. His unorthodox style made me laugh in college, until he was upsetting my boy Chris Pendleton once and then I got it. I think he must be one strong hombre. Amazing how much wrestling has changed since Ben wrestled.

http://content.themat.com/forms/2019-WTT-MFS.pdf and http://content.themat.com/forms/2019-WTT-Procedures.pdf It says "delay due to injury or illness." It doesn't say "delay due to needing to knock off the rust." As mentioned previously, the committee apparently put in specific wording when the delay was announced saying that they didn't want him to compete prior to 8/17, but someone(s) also apparently changed their mind. (I know #3 of what I posted has no "formal basis in any rule" since only 48 hours is required, but considering this was an old injury and if it's apparently common knowledge that he should be able to compete in something else first, I think that's part of why people are so annoyed by the situation).

Yes, I think Masvidal had practiced literally every step of that sequence. A little change in direction, knowing when charging riled up Ben had to plant and change directions, and then 3,2,1...bingo! That's what professional fighters do. I honestly am surprised that Ben used the strategy he did. Maybe he was a bit more emotionally charged than he usually begins? Masvidal even stayed exactly in place against the cage totally set up their approach angles and initial contact location imo. He taunted Ben so that they both knew there was no hand tapping going on. I think his execution was brilliant, but tend to agree with him that Ben fell for it hook, line and sinker. That's the first time I've ever felt that. I had a gut wrenching feeling that we would wake up to find out that Ben was dead or brain dead. I know that's a huge over reaction on my part, but I was reminded of something last night. When you know someone in either wrestling or mma, it means about 10X more to you the outcome of the bout. In this case I found that my concern for Ben Askren was enough to keep me up all night. I allowed myself to replay Masvidal trying to punch him when he knew damned well, his opponent was unconscious and then mocking him with the mat slapping antics. Let's just say, I don't care who brings it, but I will be happy when he gets his ass handed to him. That brings me to my 2nd thing. I love wrestling, I love football. MMA is like that train wreck I can't avoid watching. I have a huge appreciation for what these athletes do. I believe those guys are underpaid about 100X their value, and I'm absolutely fascinated with the amazing technique and strategies these warriors bring. But let's face it if Masvidal did what he did anywhere else in the world, that would have been attempted murder. I like mma, but don't love it because of that one thing that I've never seen in sport before. Where they almost always attack a defenseless man. I understand that forces the official to stop it, but...that's too much for me.. That and sometimes there's just too much blood for me. I imagine most of you will laugh at what a whimp I am, but I'm sure glad that funky boy is OK.

    Dake Spain Results

Haha...impossible for Ringer to actually beat Dake fairly. It will be because 1. Kyle was called for too many passivities unfairly 2. Kyle was not given the proper score. 3. Kyle was injured even though they tried keeping the heavyweights away from him. 4. Kyle's doctor screwed up. 5. Kyle was screwed over by USAW. 6. Kyle should of got an attorney and sued 7.Kyle is wrestling weight higher because he keeps out wrestling Burros but refs keep screwing him 8. Kyle was more focused on dropping to 74 kg where he is the best wrestler in US. 9. The refs "misappropriated* the rules 10. The refs were out to late and had to be woke up by Koll 11. The refs were drunk. 12. Kyle was on his monthlys.

Yeah, if you're going to "need time" adjust your time frame to fit your event. Hurdle- I sleep at night Event- Work by 4:30am Time to prepare = 30 minutes Adjustment- I set my alarm for 3:30am I feel like if this is his situation and he can't be "ready" by the time the event is taking place, he should just miss the event. I can't be more clear that, this is also how the people annoyed by the situation feel. No conspiracies or wanting a bad team. It's just what people prefer. It's like, is there a chance they will push back Worlds if he wins the wrestle-off but re-tweaks it Hurdle- Injury Event- Final X Time to prepare = had 9 months needs 11 Adjustment- move up "Recovery time" or skip the event for 2019 and focus on 2020

Don't agree with that... Masvidal fight with just 5 sec don't tell anything about his ability to wrestle, since Askren is in the Ufc he only fought Lawler (ex champion) and Masvidal (rank 4 or 5), I want to see him at least one or twice more against Opponents from Rank 7-15 Pico really should come back to wrestling, with 22 years of age, he can go back to mma after 2024, or pick the right gym and right opponents.

The point of the sport is essentially to try to put the other person in a vegetative state. It’s the most brutal sport in existence, so I’m not surprised by a guy acting like that. The UFC has ceased to be a “martial art” long ago and has been this brutal clown show for a while. Askren talked a lot of crap to somebody he shouldn’t have and the fight proceeded accordingly.

It doesn’t matter how ugly Dakes wins look. He finds a way to win. That’s why everyone always doubted him against DT but he proved them wrong. I expect he’ll do the same against Ringer and at Worlds

I think the overall sentiment is: He knew he had a set date for a wrestle off he claimed to be too injured to compete at, in general (in most sports), if you can't compete that's the end of it you lose. Not the case here.... His injury appeared to be a little older, and he seemed to have had time to recover but then apparently he won't be able to compete (doctors orders? as some have said) until the 17th of Aug. Then he goes and competes. Everyone wants the "best team" out there (I hate how often I see that as people's main argument) But this isn't a matter of the #1 guy in the World as a rep or My Fat A$$ going out there.... It's legit closer to 1A and 1B.... Yes Gamesmanship, within the rules, etc etc... it's all fine... it's already been settled, who cares anymore. But it's simply bad form, uncouth, unpalatable, etc... He's had time, he is obviously "able" to compete... I think most people think "Any other wrestler would strap em up" Yeah yeah some of you weirdos will say, "So just because he wont, strap them up, and wrestle at a disadvantage he is somehow a bad guy?" To which I reply, "Eat a Richard, if he wasn't ready in the normal time frame, switch your damn focus to the Olympics, he's a great wrestler but it's an unnecessary kink in the process."

Lol he got caught shooting a sloppy double by a flying knee and it ended the match. It has no impact on wrestling. Nothing to do with international wrestling. And knockouts are part of MMA, happens to 95% of em, I'm sure he'll compete a little longer before hanging it up. Hate to see wrestlers veer into the **** talking Sonnen approach but if it stays in MMA, who cares. #wrongGroup

Housebuye - I'm not getting it. I get that the optics look bad but when you pause to think about it .... who cares where Dake is getting live wrestling matches. Why should it matter? Or do you feel that he cannot wrestle live until he wrestles Dieringer?
  40. 1 point
That's what this all seems to get down to ..... when an injured wrestler tries to get back to wrestling shape and get ready for the wrestle off, what is he allowed to do. Seems like some do not want live matches. If you are ok with live matches, it is irrelevant if it is in a competition or at OTC or at own room, or in the next state over. Dake can treat every single one of these matches as the same way and what it is meant for .......... matches to get back to form. No one has been able to explain why a match in Spain is giving Dake an unfair advantage vs a match at the OTC or in Ithaca. Still waiting to hear that.

True, although with all the smack talk Ben put out about Masvidal you has you expect him to celebrate with a chip on his shoulder. Not the most respectable action to a KO’ed opponent, but I’m not surprised after hearing about the buildup. If Ben wants to play the bad guy role and run his mouth that’s his choice, however you have to expect some of that may get throw back at you when things go south in the fight.

    Fewer PA weight classes

There was a 106lber in my state last year with over 20 wins...all forfeits. Obviously the team wrestled a crap schedule, but he still amassed 20 wins just by winning at the scale. People always dig at the big guys because they are "boring" or don't do as many moves, but it's a different game than the middle or lower weights. Heavyweight and 220 are two of the hardest weights to wrestle because there is a vast difference in the types of athletes they will see. I had a kid this year in back to back matches wrestle a kid that was 5'6" short and stocky, hard to move to wrestling a kid that was literally 6'7" tall and lanky and really funky. It's like saying a quarterback is the best athlete on the football field because he's involved in more of the plays and throws the ball the furthest. The skillset for a heavyweight is smaller, but that doesn't mean it is easier. Both 106 and heavyweight is needed in the sport and to call either easy or lessen the skills that it takes to be successful is a disgrace to the sport.
