How ape **** would this forum go if Metcalf and Pico are the ones duking it out for the right to represent us next year?

    2020 Dark-Horse?

Valid points, but that could also be why he is a dark horse contender. At his best he can beat any of our best guys. He has a win over Lee and a win over Gilman. Both were in folk though. He is 0-2 bs Fix in freestyle, but they were competitive. We know he can at least take down Fix. If he can regain his old form and improve just a bit, he could do this. In my mind it is similar to Molinaro making the 2016 team. At the time it seemed impossible but in hindsight, Molinaro was right there with everyone. He had just never beaten them consecutively I hope he is healthy in 2020. At the very least he will be fun to watch at trials im kind of bias. I’m a big fan of NATos

    Career Senior Freestyle Records

I am an old retired guy with time on his hands. So I did create a list of the senior freestyle matches that Burroughs, Cox, Dake, Snyder and Taylor have had. I picked all of the current gold medalists we have to try and make these lists. I am missing some data (names, country the wrestler came from, or scores) on a few items. I might also be missing other tournaments. If so, please let me know. All input is appreciated. The Burroughs list from his website is very complete. The Snyder list from his wikipedia page is missing the 2015 US Open that he won and a 2018 World Club Cup Dual match with India that he won. I tried to identify all the world medal winners each guy wrestled and calculated other comparative data. So scroll down to the bottom of each excel workbook page and you can see some of the calculations I have done. I think we live in a good time where we really have outstanding freestyle wrestlers in this country. Some have accomplished more, but we really have a good overall team. It is a lot of fun to follow. I have found it pretty disappointing how poorly documented the records of our greatest freestyle wrestlers are. I find all of the discussions on the forums interesting but often lacking in the real data. So I decided as part of my retirement time hobby, I would try to study it a bit. I guess it's time to share that info with all the other geeks and nerds out there. I wasn't ever sure what I would do with the stuff I created. If someone wants to put any of this out there on Wikipedia, be my guest. I am trying to do this same type of thing for Baumgartner, Gable, Jackson, Kemp, Sanderson, both Schultz brothers, and Smith. I have an outline done but this is very tough sledding finding the info. I am pretty certain that I can never find all the info and will end up with just an outline. But still lots more digging before I know that for sure (months away from having anything I am sure). Also, there is a wikipedia page that shows all the US Men's Freestyle Wrestlers by year and how they finished in world or olympic championships. I retyped this data into a spreadsheet, made a bunch of calculations and observations, and then created two summary pages. That is the second attachment you see. I focused on 1960 thru 2018 since those were the years we were basically competing every year and are completed. I am happy to answer any questions. Just type them out. Thanks Tim Freestyle Records for 5 current wrestlers.xlsx US Men's Freestyle History.xlsx

    Iran Wrestling News

Iranian women may not be the prettiest but they are extremely physically powerful and scary. If the government allowed them to wrestle it would be a massacre. The Japanese domination of women's FS would be over.

    2020 Dark-Horse?

Anyone have NaTo as a dark horse at 57. I know Gilman tech'd him at the Open but I also hear he hasn't been 100%. He seems like a guy that may always be in the mix but likely not break through.

Good info. Redshirting always seemed like a long shot. It would be an odd move to redshirt a guy so he can focus on freestyle, when you won't even let him compete in freestyle in the first place.

As fantastic as the OTTs will assuredly be, it just makes me angry that so many deserving hammers may never get to wrestle in an Olympics. Six f%cking weight classes is awful.

    2020 Dark-Horse?

Yeah he speaks on it a little after NCAAs here. Seems like he's not as motivated by free as he is with folk. Sounds like it’s growing on him though...Absolutely wild to think last year was his first in Freestyle and came away a jr world champ.

I don't know his Dogu weight. Hopefully somebody can chime in. I just saw it circulated he was more than 2 under for Final X (I assume kg) He looks fit as ever, but 2 (lbs or kilos) under...seems dramatic for a guy as big as he appears. It doesn't really mean anything obviously, hell, maybe if he bumped up he would stay the size he is now, but you would think he would want to spend some time bulking to compete with bigger guys and get adjusted to that higher weight. It's so very hard on the ole gas tank the heavier you go. Lol the more I type the more I realize he is going down and I was silly a few months back when I made a similar thread

Gable is an anomaly in that he's big and moves like a 197. I was more thinking back to the recent past where there was a run of guys that were just mammoths. Guys like Nelson, Rey, Bradley, Fox, Ellis, Konrad...

    2020 Dark-Horse?

I’d like to see Franklin Gomez make some noise in Tokyo. He looked pretty good against JB at Pan Ams this year, and maybe that was the spark he needed to elevate his wrestling. He probably won’t try out for the US team though, and idk if PR even has or will have the weight qualified for 2020. Might be the last time we see Gomez compete at the senior level as I think he’s getting up there in age.

He's not redshirting, but maybe he will. Fascinating.

That goes both ways though. Plenty of blue chip recruits that were tweeners have struggled putting on the weight and moving up as well. I will say though, the heavyweight class as a whole seems to be moving in the direction of slightly smaller, more mobile guys, so perhaps he'd fit right in.

    2020 Dark-Horse?

The Olympic year doesn't have final X. It will be single elimination until the finals, as it was when 9th seeded Frank beat 1 seed Metcalf in the quarters in 2016.

I think was quoted saying that he really didn’t like FS and preferred folk. I can’t remember if he said that before or after junior worlds

    Career Senior Freestyle Records

I had been working on getting J'den's match results on his wikipedia page. This is the prodding I need to publish I guess. I don't list the record in the table like Snyder, but has all matches from 2016 OTT to present. Haven't gone back to 15 Open or 14 WTT to get those match results. J'den is 50-10 over that time. 26-6 at 86 kg and 24-4 at 92 kg. Interesting to me is that he has yet to face a Russian (at least one wrestling for Russia).

I’d love to see mehki take an oly shirt. I don’t think he’s on JB’s level yet. But after reading JB’s comments I think he could close the gap and make it very competitive if he trained in FS exclusively with senior level studs.

A soon to be 4x AA that went 3, 4, 2, TBD isn't someone that a top High School recruit would want to roll with? Anthony Ashnault went 8, 4, 6, 1. Does he sharpen steel? Would a top High School recruit at the 141-165 range want to roll with him and make him better? I'm not getting your comment.

I can't think of too many wrestlers that I would call an internet sensation. I had a lot of wrestling fans and even people that had never watched wrestling ask me if I knew who this kid was. I'm glad to hear he's still successful. I worried a little that he would also only be a youth sensation. There have been a few of those I'm sure who never made it to high school. That kind of intensity was impressive, but it made me worry he could have a hard time if/when he lost. I'm pulling for him.
