    Bad Look For Wrestling

Why are people acting like this hasn't happened multiple times before? It's as if the fans of a certain team started following the sport a couple years ago.

i watched both matches on my phone with 3 kids huddled around inbetween camp sessions... was riveted to both matches... dake wrestled differently than i have ever seen him wrestle and ringer had absolutely no answers at all... dake is a masterful tactition and can change his style to the circumstances... it's incredible to watch... i seriously can not understand anyone whining about those matches...

A non wrestling person had to decide the impact of a match. Wrestling is the laughing stock of the sports world.

Right. The fact that the officials didn't toss the skinhead's brick back at him with the message "too late" is what made wrestling look bad.

Ringer from today takes gold if he was our rep at 79.

Dake's post match interview was really elucidating. He talked about how Dieringer wrestles straight on and leans forward in his stance heavily and therefore doesn't move side to side as well. Dake used this to stay out of Dieringer's wheelhouse in the ties and picked him apart from there. It's amazing how versatile Dake is. He came out and wrestled a totally new style today.

huh? sumo matches are like 12 seconds long. this was nothing like sumo. people need to watch more sumo and stop using it as a pejorative to describe anything they don't like about other wrestling styles.

    Thank you Daniel Cormier.

I was a big a critic as any after his Olympic weight cutting issues. That specific issue suck for our sport, but he’s had a significant wrestling career in my view and also redeemed himself with a respectable MMA career sense then. Through his UFC career he’s represented our sport well and deserves some respect for what he’s done for our sport at the UFC level. As well as his commitment to coaching at the HS level. Not the ending he was hoping for but he went out fighting. Nothing left to prove, screw the Jones cheating supplement tactics, and enjoy the much deserved athletic retirement and current coaching career DC. Much respect.

Have you heard this or are you speculating? Personally, I'd be surprised if anyone outside the wrestling community was ever aware of the arbitration at all, and those within formed their own opinions on the matter weeks ago. I'm much more concerned that the new precedent will result in myriad 7 & 8 second challenges taken to arbitration by both parties, and table workers will have to start timers subsequent every score. I think you need a hard limit to enforce timely challenges, but there are so many variables surrounding the timing itself, let alone issues like revised scores, etc., that controversy is inevitable. Hopefully, the costs associated with arbitration will preclude the vast majority of appeals, but it could become a problem.

Hold it at Rutgers again, and the Final X fans that paid for that event should get a free pass. I'm one of them, so I'm very biased on that recommendation. Rich Bender said in the Flo interview that they'll try to arrange for the match(es) to take place close to where they both live, so my biased recommendation has some merit.

Ringer had absolutely zero for Dake

To me, Dake's footwork was the key. Way more side to side and in and out stuff. He looked like Oliver out there with the edge of the mat rope-a-dope. Ringer had a very hard time getting his hands on Dake, and he doesn't have any offense from space. Whenever he got his hands on him, Dake went to the right handed underhook to Ringer's power hand. Ringer would have to back out to clear it, and then Dake would go right back to the rope-a-dope. We can say he should have attacked more all we want, but he never got to a position where he could. Dake was like a ghost out there

Rostami won Bronze at 72kg but Forouzandeh lost his Bronze medal match at 82kg. That's 15 + 10 points. Rezan (60kg) and Mokhtari (67kg) indeed got 2 pts each. Madhavi (97kg) should also get 2 pts. That gives us 121 pts in total for the GR team race (2 Gold, 3 Bronze), finishing second behind Russia (157 pts).

Thank you for correcting my statement about which gym housed the event. I find it hard to believe the event takes place in Flo's backyard and yet Flo not involved in venue selection. To be fair: Round Rock HS stands to benefit from this event -- good!

2016 was Khadem's fault in a sense. He over complicated it sending them to these random tournaments like world cup and the Armenia one where they didn't even wrestle. In the end when they finally had no choice and did the "fair" and normal 2/3 trials Ghasemi beat Hadi and he got the wrestler he wanted. A lot of things in our wrestling need to change. Random wrestlers who aren't even good making world teams without trials. Same general style in the majority of our wrestlers across all age groups and weights which becomes less and less effective as you progress from cadet to junior to senior.

World championships would be a lot more interesting, entertaining and competitive with 2 or more guys from the US, Russia, Iran, and few other place perhaps. It's crazy that arguably the #2 guy in the World is unable to compete because he loses to the #1 guy on domestic soil.

Ragu: Great list, very interesting concept. A couple of minor observations: As a tOSU fan, I pay closer attention to them off-season. Gavin Hoffman is indeed a beast at 184 and a future AA, but he's going to have his hands full with the latest Jordan, Rocky. Going to be a hell of a wrestle-off. Don't think he can cut to 174, and he's sure not going up to 197 to challenge Moore. nhs67: Tom Ryan has all but confirmed that Kerkvliet will redshirt at heavy. That leaves Singletary as the starter, not that he was going to successfully take the 197 spot from Moore. My totally-insane-admitted-homer prediction: Sasso wins it all at 149!

Well Parviz Hadi brought people to the streets in his hometown, even parliament members from his town/region brought the sport minister to the parliament trying to change that 2016 Olympics decision but nothing happened. (which turned out to be the right thing) in general if there is a problem with an athlete/coach and a sport federation, they can appeal to the sport ministry. but nowadays most sport federations are somehow independent from the sport ministry. the sport ministry can't simply order them to do this and that. but they can strongly advise them lol but the sport ministry usually doesn't interfere with small matters like this. even in Hadi's case which became something serious, the still left it to the wrestling federation to decide and Khadem stood by his early decision.

Ringer had absolutely zero for Dake

We'll see what happens with possibly, Dieringer going up to 86 and Dake going down to 74 for Olympic Trials. But today, it didn't look like Ringer was that much bigger or stronger than Dake, if at all. Anyway, congrats to Kid Dynamite. Nice to see him healthy. (Would have like to see him open it up more but guess he did what he had to do to get the win.) Congrats to Alex too. He's had an awesome freestyle season and he had a great attitude throughout this whole Dake injury saga. Seems like a great kid.

they can do that because they have "clear rules" about that. even in Russia coaches have the last word. I don't think that works in Iran, it was always up to the coaches / technical committee to pick the world team members. if one day they install such system in Iran, it will take something like 10 years to actually work, most of Iranian top wrestlers always find a way to escape the trials. specially in Greco I'm sure everybody knows Hamid Sourian, (the best Iranian wrestler ever with 7 World/Olympics titles) there is something unbelievable about him. he almost never wrestled inside Iran in his whole senior career !!! actually he wrestled only twice, once in World Cup (which was against foreign wrestlers) and one league match early in his senior career (it was either 2005 or 2006) which he lost by tech to Yasin Bahramipour (the match was fixed the opposite team had to win all matches by tech or fall to win the league title) in his whole career he always found a way to not wrestle in Iran.

Well my take was that Dake neutralized Deringer's offense, and probably should've been hit with some additional passive calls, but in the long run, even if he was, I don't think it would've mattered much, because it seemed like Dake could score when he needed to.

Especially a returning bronze medalist. I’ve always thought it’s stupid that when it comes to making the next world team a bronze medalist gets the exact same privilege and treatment as a world champion. Especially in a double bronze system. Way too much value accrues to someone who proved he was the 3rd or 4th best guy at the weight the prior year. I personally think only returning gold medalists should sit in the finals, but I’d be ok with nobody sitting in the finals.

In freestyle why in the world would you open up when you're up 4-0? When you open up you expose yourself some too, and one 4 pointer and Ringer wins. He did exactly what he should have up 4-0 in a do or die series.

That’s a hell of a lot easier said than done. We’re talking about two world class athletes, both with age group world championships just breaking into senior level, who know each other very well. You act like they stood and danced for six minutes. Just stop.

    Mekhi announces olympic redshirt

Why are so many people against this guy giving the olympics a shot? He destroyed the guy (Josef) who beat the guy (Imart) who took a match from Burroughs. If he improves at the same trajectory that he has been, he very well could make the team. Many people win a world title less than 2 years after winning a junior world title.

Also an interesting story regarding junior worlds. Talaei does an interview where he claims Maghsoudi is not a 65kg wrestler and will not be allowed to wrestle at 65 ever again due to cutting too much weight. Now Maghsoudi says he has no problem at all making 65 and has no intention of going up as he wants to try for the Olympic team and it's not possible for him to build himself into a 74 in the short time left. He says he turned up weighing 68kg. I wonder what this is all about and what will happen.
