Is this Nick Lee's breakout year?

An actual worthwhile topic from Jimmy, nice. Lee could go anywhere from 1-6. We’ve seen him beat McKenna, but then we’ve also seen him lose to people he shouldn’t. His problem is positional mistakes, particularly in scrambles. Which is interesting because that’s where PSU makes their money. If he has tightened those up I think he wins it. If not, well it could be anyone’s guess. An interesting Lee vs Red finals note would be that they wrestled in Indiana State Finals as well. Red was a year ahead of Lee. Lee lost to Miccic in the final his freshman year, won his sophomore year, then purposely bumped up junior year to try to put a stop to Red’s four year undefeated run. Lee took him down and put him on his back early for a 5-0 lead, but Red was able to come back and win it.

The way you wrote that makes it sound like when the roster spot was on the line Zain won 2x while Yianni won 1x, i.e. Zain won 2 out of 3. In reality, when that spot was on the line Zain won 2x to zero, the arbitrator took one win away and then Zain won the very next match that counted. So Zain is either 3-0 or 2-0 vs. Yianni with the spot on the line, depending on how you look at it. Good thing for Zain they simply don't just "choose" the wrestlers cause he'd obviously be the bridesmaid to the more popular Yianni.

In life, there are few things guys will lie about more often than the amount they can bench press. Very rarely does the actual number match the boast.

Definitely disappointed that Wrestleoffs will not be streamed. It's never an amazing watch, but it gives us a chance to see new recruits in action as well as look at the team as a whole. I'm five hours away (with "normal" traffic) and taking in effect two days off to watch this event is a non-starter- not to mention that I have two small kids. Being able to watch the team online help[s me stay a part of the program.

Point being - I doubt homeboy was benching anything close to world record weights.... Wrestlers (I was one too), are often strong..but aren't power lifters. And you aren't putting up near world record class weight if you aren't lifting as a job. Natural strength is one thing, but bench is one of those areas where you can lose a lot if not working it often. I call bs ;)

What if Suriano never got hurt vs OSU?

If Suriano was not injured than he faces Gilman in the BIGs. He either wins or loses. Either way NCAA bracket probably is drawn up differently and maybe he faces Gilman again and Gilman doesn't wrestle Cruz. Lots of possibilities.

Let's be a little more sensitive to Gilman and not talk about choking in this thread.

The above estimates are way too high. College wrestlers are exceedingly strong, but not in the bench-press sort of way. They'll do pull-ups, push-ups, box jumps, plyo exercises and even cleans till the cows come home, but a 300+ bench press is a waste.

    U23 Discussion

It's impossible to know the level of competition at U23s, it varies greatly from year to year and weight to weight. Some weights can be cakewalks because no good Russians/Iranians/Georgians/etc and others can be full of hammers.

I agree with much of what you post, but disagree with bench press being overrated. As far as your "upper body push" exercises go, it is the top choice. I'm not saying that you need to bench press a house, but properly done and coupled with a good "pull" exercise, it will do more to increase strength , size, and injury prevention than any other "push" exercise. Squats and Deadlifts are king, but you need a well-rounded strength program and bench press is your best choice for the "push" muscles.

    Iran Wrestling News

Shabani lacks international experience, most of other guys (if not all) come from the youth/junior system and wrestled with non-Iranian wrestlers before. but I think for Shaabani this is very limited to Worlds U23 last year and Yasar Dogu this year (am I right ? ) this is a different style you have to learn how to deal with. I know he was disappointing in Astana but this is too early to write him off. I can imagine he learned a lot from losing to Odikadze. I have no problem if they send Atri, H. Yazdani and Hadi to the Olympics without trials but in this weight we surely need it to make things clear. personally I don't know who is my pick here. I can see pros and cons in picking any of the them. to me they are all B+

I think the scouting excuse is lame, but on the other hand, if only OSU streams, why should we bother? The season is plenty long (some might say too long). Distant alum (and I am one) can come to Princeton open or Journeyman (Journeymen?) if their early season appetite needs quenching. My 2 cents; good to hear most moved here from wr.com.

    Iran Wrestling News

Karimi never wrestled 97kg in Iran (as far as I remember) so it's hard to predict. Mohammadian lost to Nejatian in the nationals , still too early to judge on him but this gold medal here shows he is one of the favorites in this weight, we also have Yazdani, Shaabani, Foroutan and Talebi. they are all capable of winning a bronze or something with a good draw. interestingly except Karimi they are all from Mazandaran. PS: I didn't see Talebi recently (after the trials) I heard some rumors about a possible positive drug test. they won't make it public until it's official so for now consider it just a rumor. speaking of Foroutan he just lost a close match to Amin Taheri (after a dubious call) in a league match at 125kg. I know Taheri is no big deal but still it was interesting Foroutan can compete with heavier guys. there was also an interesting match between Afzali and Dadashpour at 74kg which Dadashpour won 9-2. so far I saw Tuskaev, Lomtadze, Edisherashvili and Hasanov as foreign wrestlers in the league but I'm sure we will see more in future.

Way too early 2020 NCAA champ picks

I think Hillegas slots in at 141 potentially at first before going up to 149. Regardless like Creek Chub said, the middle of VT's lineup from 2021-24 is going to be rock solid if kids stay healthy with Hillegas, M. Moore, Andonian, Brady, Mancini, Ulrey, Bolen, and that guy Lewis. Will be a challenge for the coaching staff to shuffle weights/redshirts/etc to get the most out of all that talent, but battles in the room will be (and already are) going to be epic.

Mohebbi lost 3-0 to Akgul. Mohammadian beat Hushtyn 3-2 and won the gold medal. hopefully we can see the videos later. I was thinking 97kg is probably the most competitive weight in Iran right now. there are 5-6 guys who can win a world medal with a good draw, but none of them are A level. and about Mohebbi, I think this guy could be the world champion if he started wrestling earlier which is weird, he comes from a wrestling family (probably the 2nd famous wrestling family in Iran) and yet he started wrestling something around the age of 19 !!! obviously he can't learn technique now. at least if Hadi doesn't recover in time for the qualifiers Mohebbi also can easily qualify the weight for Iran.

    Iran Wrestling News

both Mohammadian and Mohebbi made it to the final. Mohebbi beat Deng 3-1 and he will be up against Akgul in the final, the last time they wrestled in Yasar Dogu it was very easy for Akgul. but Mohammadian was surprising by teching Baitsaev 11-0 ! isn't Baitsaev #2 in Russia only behind the great Sadulaev ? that's pretty impressive for someone who was out of competitive wrestling for 4 years ! his final won't be easy against Hushtyn at least Russia is not going back home with 4 gold medals lol (countries are limited to 4 in each style)
