    Experience of a Lifetime

Choosing to post this year, due to venue, and the impact of said venue. This past weekend, I was able to experience (for me), what I would call an "experience of a lifetime". Let me qualify and explain: I wrestled folk, free, and a tiny bit of greco in "my day" I was self-admittedly, a mediocre wrestler at best. Although I had utmost aspirations, they were met with adversity after adversity, challenge after challenge. At no time did my love the sport wane, but, my ability to compete did. Given the above, my 8 year-old son has decided, on his own, to give wrestling a try. We live in CO, and had the opportunity over the weekend to receive a tour of the Olympic Training Center. Now, most tours, you get a chance to walk into buildings/areas, snap some pics (with no flash of course), and create some memories. However, my son's coach was cleared to take us ALL on the mats at the OTC. While there, he provided about 20-25 minutes of instruction to the kiddos that were there, and also involved the parents. So... what was my experience of a lifetime? My son and I were able to receive instruction from a VERY highly regarded coach, while ON the mats where our Olympic Stars train, while "drilling" and bonding with my son. As a mediocre wrestler, the notion of ever stepping into the room, let alone on the mat, and with my son, will be an experience that I will NEVER forget.

    RBY vs Desanto 2019-2020

I hate to say it, but I think a lot of personal bias is making MANY on here inaccurately gauge how good DeSanto is based on what they think of his personality. Let's not forget that he wrestled at Drexel(not exactly known for top notch performance and immediate development) as a TF and went into NCAA's with only 5 losses and a solid win over Micic. He would win his 1st 2 matches before losing to Micic and having a mental breakdown when he was clearly on his way to winning his R12 match. As a True Soph he transferred to Iowa and would go into NCAA's with 4 losses, owning a win over the eventual Champ. He would take 5th with his 2 losses being 3-2 to Micic and 7-6 to Pletcher. He also avenged his early season loss to Gomez, beating him 16-5 at NCAA's. Out of the guys he lost to that year he was 1-1 against Suriano(Champ), 0-1 against Fix(2nd), 0-1 against Micic(3rd), 0-1 against Pletcher(4th), 2-1 against Lizak(7th) and 1-1 against Gomez(R12). I mean the guy wrestled a MONSTER schedule that year. He wrestled EVERY other AA and 1 of the R12ers. The guy IS a contender at either 133 or 141. Deal with it!

    Tom Ryan interview on Flo

I watched the interview that CP had with Tom Ryan yesterday on Flo. As a dyed in the wool PSU fan I gotta say he came off extremely well. He was asked some tough questions and he really appeared to give some thoughtful and honest answers. It is pretty clear he was disappointed in Snyder's move to the NLWC, and he thinks he would be better served staying put. He didn't openly refute CP's theory of the Snyder move being related to Kerkvliet entering the transfer portal. He seemed quietly angry about that move, in discussing his thoughts on recruits looking for what programs/coaches can do for them as opposed to what a recruit can bring to the program/team. He clearly views Kerkvliet as the former. And his eyes did twinkle a bit at the idea of J'den Cox going to the OSU RTC. It would have been very easy for him to give a canned answer to the questions, but he didn't dodge them. I can see why he is such a good recruiter. he is a great communicator.

Honestly considering the magnitude of stuff they already have behind the paywall, I was a bit surprised it wasn't already. But the timing of doing it now is hilarious.

Flo posted an interview with Tom Ryan over the weekend. He mentions it there but gives no details on whether it’s happening and says Jden could go either weight and it wasn’t being pursued to get back at Snyder. A few weeks ago I had heard it was a done deal, he was going 97kg, and the RTC was pursuing another top 97kg wrestler as well. https://www.flowrestling.org/events/6586299-2019-stanford-vs-ohio-state-big-ten-wrestling/videos?playing=6596252&limit=60

FLO's updated list of competitors. Now includes Nolf, Deiringer, and Clark among others. Some other big names like Snyder, IMAR, Gross, Tomasello, Garrett, Suriano, Oliver, Eierman, McKenna, Lewis, Marsteller, Myles Martin, Gadson, Bradley, Derek White, and Nick Nevills are participating, too. https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/6597999-complete-bill-farrell-2019-entry-list

That’s what a creepy, unhinged poster would say..... Man imagine what the Ohio RTC could have been with both Snyder and Cox there. I know Kerk is no longer on the Ohio State roster, but I wonder if Cox does indeed come to Ohio, if that makes him reconsider. He has multiple redshirt options available to him. Reading the tea leaves, it looks like Kerk is waiting on Steveson and his future at Minny to see if he can slide into his spot if he indeed gets booted from their program.

Okay a few tidbits... I absolutely believe MyMar to be the 3rd best PEAK performance guy in the weight. He is that good. His head also can put him in the middle of the pack. When it comes to Heflin? He has a big brother mentality edge on MyMar. It showed. When it comes to Brooks? Brooks just has his number for some godawful reason. If he can get past that brain of his, he is absolutely a match for Ringer. There comes a point when you have to just say they 'don't have it' though and I'm not quite there. Jokes aside its almost as if he had a seizure in his Downey match. It still astounds me that a guy who is as good of shape as he was(just outside of college season) to shut down like that. I also believe that if MyMar holds on to that match, Heflin would have been our rep last year. Styles make matches. All of this being said, 86kg has me frothing, even without Cox or Nickal. I am very intrigued at all of the different matches possible. I'd love to see Amine enter as well(wouldn't that just be fabulous). Also there is speculation(again nothing of credible merit) that Hall may not give this a proper go, being as his focus is the team race and being the best 174lber. If he goes 86kg, he will be undersized, but as skilled as any 86kg guy in the field. That has me intrigued, as well. Of the current crop of 86kg in the field, Dudley and Jackson aren't far removed from 79kg, yet they have both have tremendous success. Abounader, Foster(the only guy to beat DT in the last two years), Martin, and Brooks also paint this field as a very deep field. Super stoked. **DISCLAIMER-I had to change the MyMar bit-had him as 2nd, but he is behind Ringer and DT.

    WrestleStat Rankings - Week 2 2020

Only 2nd week, so many upsets; and with projected starters still out, that changes the dual rankings as well. With Austin O'Connor now out with injury, Sammy Sasso is now your #1 at 149, and the redshirt freshman has looked fantastic this season. Kendall Coleman continues his rise up to #11 at 157. Jackson Turley (165) of Rutgers made a 50-spot leap after a good performance at the Journeyman, as well as Harvard's Phillip Conigliaro moving up 48 spots after his Bearcat Open performance. And at 285, Tate Orndorff moved up 7 spots after his 2 top-10 wins over the weekend to come in at #5. In our dual rankings, with Penn State holding out a couple projected starters, they ended up falling to #2 in the rankings, while Iowa moved into the top spot despite not having wrestled any matches yet this season. Although, the tournament rankings stayed pretty much the same because of their firepower at the top. I watched both Penn State vs. Navy and Ohio State vs. Stanford via FLO, and the two events – in my opinion, could not have been any more different. Penn State came out with an offensive strategy to win and to win BIG – even those who filled in for the injured (Pipher and Edsell) stepped up their game. Ohio State on the other hand, well it was probably one of the most disappointed matches I’ve seen in a while. Quite boring comes to mind – sorry Buckeye fans but that’s my observation.

    Cassar only 238 pounds

The heavyweight landscape is changing. The knock on most "true" heavyweights (260+) is they don't have the flexibility or balance to defend shots like any weight lower than theirs does. Not everyone is a hilliger who stay standing with their foot on another wrestlers shoulder and dive into a funk roll. Those guys seem to have lots of success nowadays because they cand efend and they have the speed and explosiveness to finish shots. I cant recall the last time I saw two true HWTs change levels and shoot with penetration steps. Lewis Fernandes (Finger Lakes Wrestling Club) is pretty big, but he is tall (athletic physique). He can do all those things and is pinning everyone at opens. He will be the new Gable competition when Cassar graduates. After seeing him, I dont even think Schults or Cassioppi will be able to hang with him.

    RTC Discussion

According to the DSM, criteria for an event to be deemed relevant to a PTSD diagnosis (traumatic event) are that you feel a threat upon your life and it causes your day to day life and outlook to change (depression, anxiety, etc). It can be acute short term, temporary or chronic. So, if someone thinks the world is going to end and becomes depressed because of it, it is considered a traumatic event. You have to admit, some people haven't gotten over it and it has consumed their life.

That is a fair assumption, but i would argue that someone starting out in corporate america right out of college doesn't have much of a work life balance because the promotions aren't linear like the Military. you would be making 5K per month righht out of college (forgot to add TAX FREE housing allowance and sustinence allowance). First promotion is 18 months, and the second promotion is 12 years after that. You would be an Army, Marine or AF Captain (0-3) or Navy LT (O-3 like maverick). Also, I would argue that the leadership you learn while at the acedemy AND in the military makes you a better manager once you transition to the civilian sector. It is a concept called citizen soldiery. The Canadians made this little segment talking about their officer Training Corps (Our ROTC) which looks at Canada, the US and the UK. it is a good 5 minute watch. The only problem is the Canadian network doesn't have a way for you to watch it (I contacted them to try and purchase a DVD, but they only had a transcript). It is very informative and gives some perspective: Recovering our Honour:

Yeah as many have been saying, Conel had an incredibly NCAAs and he is easy to root for (life has not been kind to him and he has overcome quite a bit - I respect him a hell of a lot). but...he doesn’t have good leg attacks or great defense. He doesn’t really turn people either. He is super tough, good in the clinch, and has passable defense, but he is extremely matchup dependent. If he ends up starting post season and is healthy, I’m picking him to AA, but maybe 7th or so. Honestly hope he wins a title. Well maybe 2nd to Moore. I hope he goes into coaching.

Why don’t you stop stating that you’re smarter than everyone and no one will understand and try to explain it to us? I mean a quick google search on cash flow statements says most have 3 parts: cash from operating activities, cash from investing activities, and cash from financing activities. Unless I’m mistaken it seems at least most of the first 2 of those are included in the form 990 for NLWC. I get that revenue does not give the full picture, but it gives a decent bit of it right? If an RTC’s average annual revenue is $500k, how many wrestlers can really make a living wage from what’s left after other expenses? (Note, that appeared to even be the ballpark for NLWC outside of a likely multi-million dollar donation)

The point of army and navy is to train officers. Wrestling (and the rest of the athletic programs) can be a part of that through the benefits gained in the sport, but the point of these teams is not to produce world/Olympic wrestlers. Yes, I know army has the elite athlete program, but that’s a bit different than a spot in West Point. The required military service also makes recruiting very difficult. And no, Cornell has virtually no issues with recruiting standards thanks to FLWC and the community college there/ag school. So it’s not comparable to the academies.

What is more disturbing is that Downey may very realistically not qualify the weight if given the Pan Am nod. That punishes Taylor, Cox, (and Ringer and Valencia ?and Nickal? when they inquired last year of Taylor's availability so they could bump up). Taylor should have to qualify the weight and turn around and make weight a couple weeks later. Ya know, to get in some live reps. Not that I'm salty that he did what's best for himself as he absolutely should have, I'm salty that he knew he couldn't go and he hosed the 2020 squad.
