This may be a gratuitous one-post thread but Brands is the biggest surprise of the season and needs a thread. He’s up two weights from his real weight class and beating ranked dudes. Brands wrestled 163 a few months ago. Colbray was the top-ranked recruit at 195 out of HS, blue chip material. He hasn’t fulfilled expectations but had a solid season last year. I had Colbray over Brands in ink and even replayed that TD a dozen times to make sure my prediction hadn’t gotten blown up by bad reffing. Now that Brands is out, everyone will scout him, so things just got a lot tougher. Brands weighed in at 176.5 for his debut “because Tom told me to” (post-debut interview). WTF does that mean? Moving him down makes no sense for the lineup so why have a target weight at all?

After a couple slip ups, Foley was careful not to bring up politics. However, certain crazies attacked him at every opportunity in the comments thus making it appear as if he was being political when in fact they were.

How about all the times when reactionaries like Askren, Saylor, Schultz and so many other right wing (anti-vaxxers and religious nuts) would add their ignorant and often racist two cents to the dialogue? The wrestling community is so extremely right wing and authoritarian it ignores its own biases. It so bloody rural and religious and conservative it can't see it's own blindnesses. It is uncritical and accepting of ignorant and dangerous fools like Jordan and Hastert and so many others. Foley is so much smarter and more educated than the majority of the parochial wrestling community.

wow it's almost like this kid is a....Brands http://wrestlingforgable.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=1987-11-30T13%3A08%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=1 'I typically go 50-50 with either of them for the first 20 minutes of wrestling. But they don't get tired. They will almost get your leg, and almost get your leg, and almost get your leg, and eventually they'll get your leg. Then they'll get it again. And again. And again. It is highly annoying.'

Not really. They have very little ads amongst a 2 hour livestream. Revenue comes from the ads which are prior to the video clips. That being said the real revenue comes from being the most trusted source for news and coverage for a given space. Flo fails to give adequate coverage to events that they don’t cover. If wrestling were bigger, that would be a problem, but the small market of wrestling combined with the fact that they are light years ahead of everyone else means that they can ignore events that they don’t cover with little to no consequence.

Came here to post almost verbatim the same thing. Winning 4 matches against a team ranked higher than you isn’t exactly a “gotcha” moment against Eggum. If you look at the results you could actually argue that Minnesota as a whole wrestled better than one would expect them to considering some of the matchups.

Gophers won 4 of the 10 matches. Four other matches (125, 149, 157, 165) were within a point or tied going into the 3rd period. Jones at 133 got out to a 8-1 lead before getting pinned in the 2nd period. And the freshman 197 pounder Joles lost a regular decision to a top 10 opponent. it certainly wasn’t great but hardly evidence to point towards your thought of another epic failure by the head coach.

    Nelson Brands deserves a thread

From what's public, it sounds like he and his father handled his development in a really thoughtful way, with the father not being directly involved in high school and the son developing his own passion that way, then making a conscious choice he wanted to have his father as a formal coach in college when the son was at an age where he knew that that kind of intensity was what he wanted. It's producing some fun to watch results so far.

“Fist fight tough” is a great way to describe it. Kid is good. Not a technician by any means. Usually coach’s kids turn out soft, but this ones got it. His dad has to be proud.

    Does Koll care about streaks

Hammerlock is referring to a national title. Koll, it seems, may be sacrificing the team's success this year by ORS-shirting guys in order to have a great team next year or even the year after.

And here's why: 1. They will be getting 0 to a few points from 125, 149 and possibly even 157 depending on how severe Berge's injury is. 2. While Beard would certainly be an improvement at 197 there is no guarantee he AAs...and Cael has said he wants to keep Beard, Joe Lee, Aaron Brooks and Starroci together for 4 years. 3. Shakur is a total wildcard at this point. He has underperformed at NCAAs and is coming off ACL surgery. I could easily see him going 2-2 at NCAAs. 4. PSU lacks elite bonus point scorers this year. Nick Lee looks like he might be their best bonuser...and he has consistently finished 5th at NCAAs. Hall and Joseph have shown the ability to major guys, sometimes pin, but they are nowwhere near Nolf and Nickal territory. Plus, PSU already snapped the 60 match dual win streak...they likely lose to Iowa this year too, so there's no real point in going all in on what is likely a 2 loss dual season. Reload for next year!

    Memorable "Debuts/Statement Victories"

With Carr getting a nice win. It got me thinking of the times kids burst onto the scene as Freshman (Redshirt... I don't care) and that first victory where you said "Oh, this kid means business". Doesn't have to be their first match, but what is one you remember? Mine was Schlatter over Espo 1, where you thought "I bet Schlatter can compete with him"... but it ended up being an exciting shootout that Schlatter won..... and forced everyone to take notice of course it was followed soon thereafter by Schlatter vs Espo 2, which was pretty much a crushing.... but that is one that really sticks in my mind as "Man this kid has a chance to beat anyone" Hoping everyone has some great ones that really left an impression... And go!

WRONG! I'll get in a political debate with anybody in the appropriate forum. But I don't want to hear LeBron James, TR Foley, Trump, Clinton, Ha Ha Clinton Dix or anybody else tell me what my political views should be when I'm trying to enjoy sports. And I don't want to hear Ben Shapiro tell me about the Big Ten Conference tournament.

The way their line up eligibility falls, there are no punts in PSU's foreseeable future. Next year's class will; have used both their grey shirts and redshirts, and there isn't another Olympic redshirt for 4 more years.

Amazing performance. He isn't very tactical, and frankly he isn't that good, he's just fist fight tough. Went out against a bigger guy, refused to back up, took way more shoots, and forced colbray to break for about a fifth of a second.

    Memorable "Debuts/Statement Victories"

I had to read more on him, and that was his fondest memory as well: Q: Out of all your wins, is there one that particularly stands out? A: The one that really stands out was the Midlands final from my freshman year. I wrestled Barry Davis from Iowa. He was the defending national champion and had just come back from taking second at the Olympics. Prior to beating him, I had lost to him two weeks earlier. I had been doing pretty well against him in that match until the third period, and I don't think I pushed myself hard enough. I was pretty disappointed after the match, thinking that I could have beaten him if I had wrestled harder throughout the whole match and not gotten caught up with the fact that he was Barry Davis. I vowed to myself that if I ever had the opportunity to wrestle him again, I would do much better. I had that opportunity at the Midlands, and I beat him. I was proud of myself because I went out and wrestled hard for the whole match.

How many points do you get for a spladle in grappling? I’ll take Bo Nickal by technical fall. I just don’t think this other guy is as good of an athlete as Bo, seeing as I’ve never heard of him and his sport isn’t part of the Olympics.

""Extremely right-wing" as a broad brush - absolutely. Most wrestlers I know are libertarian in nature. They have harnessed their own personal fortitude, taken on a substantial challenge in wrestling, and developed self-reliance. If anything I view the big-government / Big-brother movement as Authoritarian. Rural - Hard to say harder yet to view as a pejorative. My own frame of reference is anything but rural. The older I get the more rural appeals. Makes it easier to crank the NNM Blues to obscene levels and hear every note from JG and Wolf. Religious - Not sure how any of that plays other than as a swipe at peoples beliefs. Why would anyone care and why would it be deemed a negative? The primary issue is with the NUTS reference. Racist, supporters of Denny Hastert, reactionaries, anti-vaxxers, religious nuts, ignorant, extremely right wing, authoritarian, bloody rural, blind, uncritical, accepting, dangerous, less-educated - I reject every one of those adjectives; none of that has ever been my experience. I view wrestlers and wrestling fans as > the population at large. Exceptions apply of course (see Foley and DMM53).

I might be willing to pay to access his mailbag but Foley couldn’t hide his political biases out of the articles. He could have easily paid homage to the late senator without disparaging those who voted differently. Interjecting politics into a sports column with a relatively small audience is a bad business decision.

Totally disagree with the criticisms directed towards Eggum. He has had to deal with some bad choices by some young men, and has made the best of some tough situations. Even with some mediocre recruiting classes they are coming off a 4th in Big Ten (just 6 pts behind Iowa) and 8th at NCAAs. Some of you are overreacting to the ugly Rider match, which was lightning in a bottle for the Broncs. Ski-U-Mah!
