Askren has been great, they are still working out the kinks (mostly related to Ben steering discussions somewhere else before they finish the one they are on) but I'm a total believer now despite some early skepticism. Ben's analysis as a coach/technician and his ability to argue while not making it super heated/personal has been great. Great lighthearted discussions, great atmosphere and way less toxicity than before. They made an already great product even better... Ben can make a point, admit he may be wrong and is good at including the counterpoints from his co-hosts. All too often before it was "everyone against Willie" or "everyone against Nomad" where the person being attacked would double down to infinity and make for uncomfortable bickering. Bratke and Bray having less input so far has been the biggest bummer but they still chime in when needed. But all-in-all FRL has improved with Askren

Pretty wild how many grown men jump at the chance to mock someone’s beliefs and religion. Does Kyle Snyder mock your beliefs? I never see anyone on these threads push there religious beliefs on anyone but always the same group of people just can’t wait to talk smack anytime a wrestler brings up god. You don’t believe fine ,but when you try to mock a man whose one of the best athletes in the world and one the greatest American wrestlers ever because his faith is strong, you might as well slap on a fake nose and some over sized red shoes bc your just a clown.

Obviously disappointing to have no Greco finalist, but maybe we will get a lot of medals. The next session begins at 12 p.m. ET. Wrestling for medals are: 55 kg - Max Nowry (silver/bronze) 87 kg - Pat Martinez (bronze) 87 kg - Joe Rau (bronze) 97 kg - G'Angelo Hancock (bronze) 130 kg - Adam Coon (bronze)

    Damian Hahn at SDSU

I haven't seen any posts about Hahn's SDSU team, but they have looked great since Christmas. Their last loss was 18-16 to Cornell, before beating Duke, Michigan St, Old Dominion, UNI, and Wyoming. I am excited to see how they do against Iowa St in a couple days. Truth is that I had sympathy for Hahn. I was worried his first head coaching job wouldn't be a success as Bono left and took his best wrestler with him along with a few de-commits. Boy was a wrong. SDSU cannot be an easy school to recruit to. In N'east Nebraska, N'west Iowa, S'East South Dakota, and S' west Minnesota, the population is a rounding error for many states, plus there are just a couple good teams to recruit against if a stud does come out. Good on Hahn! I'm really happy to see SDSU stay relevent.

Not as bad as Eierman’s comments on the way out, but Snyder wasn’t exactly complimentary either. I’m quite surprised by that. He seemed to have a good relationship with his coaches and teammates. The whole God wanted me to line is so weak.

I think the new FRL is very good. Askren fits in well by adding his strong personality without being domineering, and it's a friendly group of smart, funny guys who interact productively together. I thought they made a good effort today to give a balanced analysis of the Iowa-Penn State likelihoods in line with the facts on the ground. To me the only person who could have a serious beef with today's discussion would be Jacob Warner (if he has a serious girlfriend).

PSU fans are spinning it so if Iowa loses they can proclaim it the greatest victory in history and say Brands should be fired or Iowa wins they will discredit it since they were such huge favorites. Tbar has been doing it ever since word on Cassar came out and now Im seeing a few others are jumping in on the act too.

Snyder is living in Cael's basement

I don't think he was dissing anyone. He just wants to see other perspectives and felt tOSU couldn't provide that anymore. If you look at his finals wins, they were by tie (win by criteria) in 2015, win by one point in 2016, win by 1 point 2017, lose by pin 2018, bronze in 2019. He was not as dominating as we all wanted to believe. He got it done the first three years and then lost ground. A change in perspective is a good think I think. Hopefully it will be so for him and he makes it to the finals and beats whoever is there by a good margin. mspart

Meng is a tank. Steamrolled Coon at the end & scored when he needed to. Wish Coon could spend a few months training with Lopez and the other Cuban Heavy. I could be wrong but I don't believe anyone in the US is going to give him the looks he needs to compete with these top guys.

I'm not defending anything, I'm very happy to see college athletes are going to be able to make some money soon. I'm not sure where you are getting that because I didn't say anything close to defending rules on athletes receiving money. I'm just saying because of the extremely competitive nature of athletics, and the stakes for each university that comes with it.......comparing a college athlete and a business student in this topic is not a "apples to apples" comparison as you say, and explain my POV as to why. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Eh, not to turn every thread into a PSU thread but really the only significant one is Cassar. Conel stunk and it seems Berge should be coming back. Rasheed's been injured for 3 years. Now of course losing last year's NC at heavyweight could be the difference in the team race though.

Many non athletes receive academic scholarships to attend college both at the D1 and D3 levels. They can earn money from work in their field of specialization whilst attending school. There might be some implicit earning restriction on students receiving need based scholarships but that seems less apples to apple should to me than a full academic scholarship vs a full athletic scholarship. If Joe Burrow or even Kyle Snyder were able to make money on their likeness then they would almost certainly be able to fully fund their tuition with the proceeds. If the NCAA were interested in competitive balance they would restrict the salaries of coaches/administrators, spending on athletic facilities, and some kind of financial fair play where alumni and booster cannot donate unlimited $$$ to subsidize the athletic department. They aren’t very interested in that and competitive balance is poor.

Not really. Matt is in direct competition with students from other schools in the business world and also professional businesses run by college graduates and business men and women so talented that they did not need to attend college and who get the to enjoy the benefits of their success. Business schools are in direct competition with each other to get the best students. Many business schools are named after a successful alumnus who gave $$$ to the school earned by a successful business. I am sure many business schools count on donations from their alumni to fund their businesses. The business school may have been so impressed with Matt’s business acumen that they offered him a full academic scholarship to attend their institution and Matt may have picked this offer from several similar offers from other business schools. From the point of view of the two students it is much less different than your take which focuses on how schools interact and compete with each other. Matt may be in school as much for business as Kyle is for wrestling. I don’t understand the question “is the majority of the benefit of Matt unto himself? How is that relevant at all? I agree the majority of the benefit derived from Matt’s effort goes to Matt. Why should it go anywhere else? If the majority of the benefit of Kyle’s effort goes elsewhere then he is probably being exploited.

    Cael Valencia?

Yah, runs his own wrestling club and is on the coaching staff at SJB. Named his kid Cael just months after Sanderson became a 4xer, haha. CV has plenty of time to decide and the recruitment could be ASU’s to lose but I thought someone said he took an unofficial to Stanford? That would probably be a smart move for his future beyond wrestling, and I guess he could train with his old friend/rival Jaden Abas.
