We don’t know what ODU’s states goal was and which questions the consultant was suppose to answer. I assume it is a financially sustainable athletic department that is able to gain admission to the American Conference based on the success of the football and basketball programs. The consultant answered the question. Wrestling fans need to be proactive and supporting programs by making donations to the school (not RTCs or Camps) earmarked for wrestling. And we need a season structure that is more about. The teams and not about one weekend in March for a few individuals. If you believe that wrestling is about All-Americans and just the individuals, then wrestling is not worse off with the loss of ODU. Because those athletes will remain in College wrestling. The potential All-Americans that ODU has will be redistributed to other programs. The one guarantee that college wrestling has is that there will be All-Americans and National Champions. It doesn’t matter if you have 10 wrestlers of 1,000 wrestlers, there will always be a best wrestler. This is why I am less concerned with focusing on them. I want to focus on the teams and ensuring there are more teams and diverse opportunities for athletes. I want there to be teams that can get recognition without needing All-Americans. There is no doubt that if teams were judged by duals, ODU would have been in a better position. They have a competitive dual team even when they don’t have All-Americans. Of course I am not arguing that this change to duals is a panacea. I am simply saying that it significantly helps the position of the fringe top-20 programs.

Dr Richard Sander https://www.etsu.edu/globalsport/facstaff/richard_sander.php He runs the consulting business that recommended the dropping of wrestling at ODU. In his recommendation he said... “Without question, the historic way of ‘doing business’ must be modified if ODU is going to be nationally competitive in NCAA Division I,” Sander wrote. “Each program (sport) must be reviewed and evaluated to determine its value and future. ODU must have a plan where significant resources be identified and allocated or reallocated to insure maximum value. The idea that significant new sources of revenue (and maybe some current resources) are available, is risky and improbable. Continuing sports that bring minimal return on investment will drain the sports that bring value and national recognition and exposure.” He also said... A male sport should be eliminated instead of watering down all of them. “The study concluded, in no uncertain terms, that ODU should eliminate wrestling. It cited nationally declining numbers in the sport, including the fact that in 2007-08, there were 89 programs in the nation. Since then, that number had fallen 16%, to 75. Five of those schools are Division I in wrestling only.“ Here’s his email if you would like to let him know what you think of his study. sander@etsu.edu It’s obvious he is a football/basketball guy only and care less about any other sport, which I understand to a degree, but college athletics is more then just those 2 sports.

There was also no reason to put the phrase doing business in quotation marks. If the author thinks the term is too informal (it isn’t), he should find a better phrase. The only thing worse than empty corporate jargon is incompetently written corporate jargon.

Seriously? You think harassing a consultant that advises schools on which sports to drop is wise? Let’s think logically here. What is more likely? He gets harassed and then decides to stop suggesting wrestling be dropped? Or he now believes that wrestling people are degenerate meatheads and advises even more wrestling programs get dropped?

Old Dominion sponsors men’s golf. Men’s and women’s sailing. And women’s rowing, field hockey, and lacrosse. It’s almost as if some of the sports that survive there cater to the children of the well-to-do.

    Perfectly timed regular redshirt?

Total team “punts” by Michigan and Cornell will end up allowing them to gain on Iowa and PSU. Lots of Olympic redshirts in there but both will get the full 4 years for most of their stars due to their down year. Michigan certainly wishing they had held back Paris as well.

Will other teams be dropped now?

No. And this is for the same exact reason women's sports in the United States are by far the best in the world. College sports are HIGHLY subsidized. We like to talk about football/basketball generating revenue to subsidize non-revenue sports but that really isn't the main source of income that subsidizes women's sports and college wrestling. The real source of funding comes from student fees--which could really just be called a tax on students getting an education that is used to fund coaches salaries and scholarships for athletes who might not even value the education they are getting. USA Wrestling could never come up with the HUGE somes of money that college wrestling gets through the schools. The RTC funding we talk about at the top programs is a drop in the bucket compared to the funding put into college wrestling by schools around the country.

    TATE ORNDORFF TO OHIO STATE

Wasn't GT a, 'stop gap' for the Buckeyes. He wasn't on any scholly and was working a PT job into the season. It worked out great for OSU and for GTG. He brought a bunch of excitement especially at the home meets and he had a helluva season and there were times when he became a nationally known wrestler. It was exciting, but he wasn't set to be on the roster before the season and filled a role after injuries. With that said, maybe he wins the spot if there's a season. We love him in CBUS...

How many of you guys know wrestlers who succeeded on the mat despite physical issues? Anthony Robles missing a leg, for example? I feel it's time to come clean and admit something to you guys: I ALSO have a disability. But I digress. Let's start from the beginning. When I was 9 I found out about wrestling after we moved to a new community. I asked Mom and Dad if I could join the wrestling team. Mom said "of course, but first we'll have to get you a physical". I thought that was weird, I thought I was as healthy as any other 9 year old. The next day she took me to the doctor's office and he proceeded to give me a physical. He asked my mother inside, and asked me to take a seat in the hallway. He spoke low, but with my still young/sharp ears I heard every word... "Mrs. Rex, I'm not certain that you should allow Tobus to wrestle. He's got a physical issue which may prevent him from participating fully." "What's the issue, Doctor? Give it to me straight" replied my mother. "It's his genitalia. It's too big, too expansive to fit into a typical jock-strap/singlet combo. It's also perfect and beautiful, but that's beside the point. We have a "bob" procedure that can get rid of the issue, but it's very expensive and painful". My mother started uncontrollably sobbing. She cried for a moment, then I heard her speak up... "We'll order special jock straps from Riddell!! We'll order singlets with extra large crotches! This problem can be beaten, I KNOW it!". "No ma'am, I'm afraid that's impossible. The companies who make singlets and jock straps aren't going to make a single order for a customer. YOU will have to sew Tobus's outfits yourself if you want him to wrestle!!". The rest, as they say, is history....

    Did ODU drop wrestling?

I worry that this is the first of several programs. I work in higher education and the industry is facing a potentially devastating revenue shortfall as a result of COVID-19. Wrestling programs may be low hanging fruit for administrators forced to cut millions. The best thing the wrestling community can do, is donate to your local university's wrestling program endowment. Show schools that they would anger a large contingent of donors if a program is cut.

    Sanderson: Better Never than Late

I know people here will struggle to fathom this, but Cael’s opinion on this has no impact on how the decision is made. Him speaking out over the past two weeks wouldn’t have moved the needle one way or the other. I suspect he wanted to let his thoughts known because he was frustrated by the decision and it was a way to vent while also showing his athletes that he wants to fight for them. I wouldn’t read too much into it. And if I was one of the people who wanted to ignore the rules and standards of eligibility to try to get some athletes another championship opportunity, I wouldn’t feel like Carl let down the movement by not tweeting about it. Cael letting his views be known to his admin is the only thing he could do to influence the decision and he likely did so. I highly doubt Penn State didn’t take the same position he has taken. But the decision is based on the whole membership and not simply Penn State.

We're saying the same thing about his issue. It's his power output that drops off. He can move guys around great for a short time but not a whole match. Because his general cardio was always a positive at lower weights, we can guess it's naturally good and something he know how to train. Like he can go run a few miles or sprints or do :30 go's again and again. Conditioning for power output is different. To frame it as weightlifting endurance: at 74kg, he could squat 90kg for 50 reps in 6 minutes. That was plenty to keep power output high. Now he can squat 100kg for 50 reps in 6 minutes. The problem is that an intense match at 86kg is asking him to do the equivalent of squatting 110kg for those 50 reps. He can only do it comfortably for 25 reps before he drops off because he's not strong enough and conditioned enough to keep 110kg lifts going like he needs to.
