Summer is an annual wrestling loll for me. Eventually the gray skies and a chill in the air gets me back into. I have to be in a masochist state of mind. I remember when I lived in California I couldn't understand why kids would even want to wrestle. The weather was phenomenal.

David Taylor's handling of the loss to J'Den Cox was the absolute worst. No longer having the excuse of being a "college kid" it was bad enough what happened immediately after the match, but to then crap all over a guy who won a bronze medal. Shows what a spoiled, entitled brat Taylor is...

    2021 Olympics

The sad thing is that if people just acted responsibly in this country by practicing social distancing and wearing ppe, as they have in Germany and South Korea, we would be able to have an almost normal society/economy as we wait for the vaccine likely in December/January. Could we go to bars or indoor restaurants? No, probably not. But we could do most other things almost normally. Of course, wearing a mask somehow became a political issue and matter of personal “freedom.” Btw I agree that having protests in the middle of a pandemic was an awful idea-although it’s very difficult to stop protests from happening. This virus really emphasizes the whole “two Americas phenomenon” though. Not left vs right but the fact that this country is home to both people who are going to deliver a vaccine and effective treatments in a record time never seen before in human history, but also others who can’t seem to grasp that covering your mouth and avoiding crowds limits the spread of a respiratory virus.

2012 EIWA Tournament was the worst case of unsportsmanlike conduct I have seen in my 55 years of watching and competing. Billy George of Cornell was wrestling Nathaniel Brown from Lehigh. Winner qualified for nationals. Right as the match finished George stood up and dropped down kneeing Brown in the head. Brown was unable to go to nationals and had to drop a class or two that semester. George was back next year wrestling and I don’t remember Cornell punishing him with the loss of any matches. I was matside and saw the whole thing unfold.

Don't get the logic with Metcalf here. There was still time on the clock with Desanto-Micic too. Both moves were dangerous, but you could at least make the argument that Desanto was trying to use his dangerous move to put Micic on his back. You can't make that argument with Metcalf. And the worst case scenario for injury was way worse for Metcalf's move than Desanto's too. I'm a hawk fan, but a spade's a spade.

The Metcalf one is not really involved here. You can get mad about it, but there was time on the clock. Terry after losing to Kendall Cross was pretty bad. The Taylor/Cael combo after Match 3 was pretty epic. Desanto vs. Micic was another one, obviously.

Great examples from Le duke. Very similar to my experience working at a very good state school. In the last 3 years, the school has renovated 4 dorms and built another completely new dorm on top of that. Another was scheduled for this year, but is now on hold (actually the one I lived in when I attended). Ironically, 2 of the dorms rebuilt were already considered to be among the luxury dorms. They've also built several new stand alone academic buildings, all incredibly high tech (read: expensive). Meanwhile, most of the people that actually make the university run are relatively underpaid. Another fun little anecdote from my experience I always like to tell. Last year, my school (not the entire university, just the school I work at) spent over $300k on catering. Not the hugest dent in the budget, but as someone who sees how much of that food gets thrown away at the end, incredibly infuriating.

AA 5th Noah's Revenge (2) Noah Adams (WVU) 32-0 Over (3) Eric Schultz (NEB) 23-4 By Score 6 - 5 Adams got a small sampling of national tournament wrestling last year, and it left a bitter taste in his mouth. He wasn't two-and-barbeque in Pittsburgh last March, but his stay in the Steel City wasn't an extended one either. He dropped his opening match to NC State's Malik McDonald, won the first wrestle-back against 29th-ranked Brandon Whitman of North Carolina and then lost to Nebraska's Eric Schultz to conclude his abbreviated tournament run. Noah took a week off to clear his mind and then spent the next couple of months literally living in the WVU Wrestling Pavilion. By the end of last summer, he was a different dude, mentally and physically. "Leaving NCAAs last year without being on the podium was disappointing to me, but at the same time I think I learned from it," Noah admitted. "I learned what I needed to do and I've always had that in the back of my head motivating me to keep me going when everything is hard." "I think when you get to that stage and you don't have the success and you see some other guys have success that maybe you think you can beat, that bothers you," Coach Flynn added. Noah Adams' single most important lesson from that experience was realizing that nothing replaces good, old-fashioned hard work because the wrestling gods simply won't allow it. "He's more sound," Flynn admitted. "It sounds funny, but it's just the basics such as keeping his level down. Last year, he was standing straight up and guys were getting in on his legs so we've fixed that. "And he's making a real attempt to hold people down, which before he would just let people go," Flynn added. wvusports.com "I did not reach my goal of becoming a national champion this year. It was good to finish with a win over Eric. I'll be back.", said Noah.

I'm not going to hijack this thread and make it about P.E., but as an Elementary Physical Education teacher(not gym teacher) I can tell you it's much more than just rolling out a ball and blowing a whistle when it's time for the class to leave. May not seem like a a lot of work because we do get to play a lot of games, so I guess some might be jealous that we get to run around outside or in a big gymnasium and play games while others are stuck in a room teaching math? But there's lot more that go into it than just playing games. That's not what it is from the beginning of class till the end. There are different models of teaching P.E. and to each his own. But I can say being at the elementary level there is a lot of motor skill development being taught, lots of mechanics, evaluations of students that may need OT or PT, etc. In addition, it's a great class for teaching teamwork, sportsmanship, problem solving, etc. As for the PE teacher that just comes up with activities and then wrangles them up, that's the exact kind of PE teacher that gives us a bad rap. And I think the chances of their being HS or college wrestling this year are less than 10%.

Is this year gonna happen? What then?

I agree there are a lot of phys ed teachers that suck. I remember a couple in particular. One was fat and the other was always pissed off. Those two factors definitely made it hard to have any respect for them as far as gym teachers go. Honestly what is so hard about being a P.E. teacher? I'm genuinely asking cause getting paid 60k+ a year to play games and occasionally teach a health class seems pretty darn easy relative to the other teaching positions throughout a school, especially if it's high school. As for kids being fat and out of shape that's completely on the parents. I dont think you can put that on a person who spends about 50 minutes a day with them. Like buck said, some kids are just flat out spazzes.

Is this year gonna happen? What then?

A family member of mine teaches gym and he says its nothin. Pretty much says all you have to do is come up with activities and know how to wrangle in a bunch of kids. Every now and then write reviews of his coworkers and do some minor paper work. Has no homework to grade. He himself has said it's cake. Gets paid as much as a non phys ed teacher and does half the work.

Saturday Night Results - Finals Hall The calm-and-collected senior, a three-time All-American and the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class, doesn’t feel much pressure these days. He’s expected a national title for four straight seasons — winning once and finishing twice as the runner-up. Teammate Nick Lee shook his head when asked if Hall has shown any signs of unease this tournament. “I probably get more nervous for any of Mark’s matches than Mark does,” he added. Lee wasn’t even sure the last time Hall appeared nervous. Maybe, he joked, Hall was a bit nervous Monday night when a few friends played the Mafia card game and Lee caught on to Hall’s bluff. But otherwise? Well, Lee said after some thought, Hall has never had pre-match butterflies — at least not since Lee, a junior, has been a Nittany Lion. “He’s right,” Hall added. “I don’t really get nervous too much because I’ve had a lot of experience.” So when was the last time Hall’s legs felt like Jell-O on a wrestling mat? You’d have to go back to the time he didn’t have experience — when head coach Cael Sanderson removed his redshirt as a freshman in 2017 and Hall was preparing for his first collegiate dual bout. Against Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye. “The timing wasn’t great for him, but it also was maybe a blessing for him,” Sanderson recalled, alluding to Hall’s 7-5 loss to Alex Meyer. “He ended up winning nationals, so it worked out.” Added Hall, with a laugh: “I couldn’t feel my legs. Like bottom half from my hips down, it was like Jell-O. It was bad.” Mark Hall seems dialed in and even relaxed for this match with Kem. Hall shared "Being a big 10 matchup, we've already wrestled twice this year. I prepared the same for this match as the last ones. I came into PSU ready and tough. VJ and Cael have helped prepare me for the tight matches and I know if I wrestle hard, the result will take care of itself. There are no more chances and you will see me leave my all on the mat." Kemerer Michael Kemerer finished third in the national meet in 2017, fourth in 2018. He missed all of last season with an injury, but came back this season and won all of his regular-season matches, including a victory over Penn State's Mark Hall. But Hall came back to defeat Kemerer in the Big Ten championships. Kem said, "I am not really about proving myself to anyone but myself. The work in the room, pushing myself to score, it will come out in the match. I believe in what God gives me and I will just let it happen. Keep wrestling, keep wrestling, do what I train to do... and I will be fine. I beat Hall at Carver, he beat me at the Big 10s. Nationals is what I've been looking to and I'm ready to win." The Match (1) Mark Hall (PSU) 23-1 Over (2) Michael Kemerer (IOWA) 15-1 By PIN :0:23 (this time Kem doesn't roll through) Time to celebrate... Time to relax...
