    Taylor vs. Sadulaev

They don't stop matches to wipe down. Honestly when is the last time you saw that happen? I am not being rhetorical when I ask: can you please share video of a senior level match being stopped for a competitor to be wiped down and in turn I will eat crow. Carl can throw all the bricks and chairs in the world but it doesn't change the fact that DT lost fair and square.

I don't even see him rising TO Bellator name. Honestly. Pico got signed as a phenom and forgot his roots. Lost 3 easily winnable matches because of it and likely lost a few years of his combat abilities for getting KOd. I see Downey earning a contract, but not having success in Bellator. He is TST(thick solid and tight) so does he make that drop to 185? Or does he go up to 205, where he won't have a power advantage? All this said, I see him forgetting his roots and trying to throw with too many people. I also don't see him giving proper respects to BJJ type grapplers and getting something torn off or put to sleep. He has the grit and power to succeed, I just don't trust his fight IQ until I see it.

    Taylor vs. Sadulaev

It is well known that certain programs don't send for non-oly weights, especially year before Olympics. Cuba, for example, as well as Azerbaijan(who nearly didn't send Sharifov the world silver medalist). Just by proxy of less participation. As far as pure numbers go, here are the number of entries at last year's worlds: 57kg: 35 61kg: 25 65kg: 44 70kg: 30 74kg: 39 79kg: 23 86kg: 43 92kg: 18 97kg: 26 125kg: 28 For fun, here are 2018 worlds, as well: 57kg: 27 61kg: 23 65kg: 30 70kg: 28 74kg: 32 79kg: 26 86kg: 30 92kg: 21 97kg: 25 125kg: 22 Doesn't seem like much, but factor in that pretty much all the main powers in wresting put out their better wrestlers at the olympic weights (Iran, Cuba, Russia, etc) and then those numbers appear more drastic.

ESPN article on the football program is very enlightening. Seems to be less about representation and more about being held to different disciplinary standards and discomfort in being themselves around the program. It is well written and really an eye opener regarding systemic, and often subtle, daily racism that blacks endure. On the outside looking in the wrestling team doesn't and hasn't had a lot of black athletes, which isn't unusual for Iowa City, but is there any review of the experience of those black athletes, either with the current administration or past? It doesn't fit everyone but there definitely is an underlying preference in the program for hunting, country music and camouflage. I will go ahead and be hypocritical here and mention that those traits often fit someone who isn't.....ahem....tolerant.

10 of the 30 world team members across all 3 styles for America last year were black ...that’s 33 percent of the team, while black people are only 14% of the population so idk if “so few” is an accurate reflection of the numbers out but ,Nyc literally has like 3 wrestling teams, they honestly probably have more professional sport teams than high school wrestling teams . And if you polled any group of wrestlers anywhere in the US on how or why they started wrestling by far the 2 most common answers are going to be because my dad/brother/sister wrestled so I joined or they had a football coach convince them to try it out.also NJ is obviously a wrestling hotbed but even the cities here don’t have many programs, Camden has a middling team, I’m not sure the Newark schools have wrestling anymore , the Paterson high schools have trouble filling out most non football/basketball teams. Most public city schools have budget issues and wrestling is always one of the first on the chopping block, and even if they keep the team they aren’t going to be dishing out top dollar to bring in a good wrestling coach. At the end of the day it’s a niche sport and with programs like beat the streets taking off over the last decade and with Burroughs and Jden cox dominating the sport I’m sure if you revisit the numbers 5 to 10 yrs from now will we definitely see an uptick in the participation but it’s not something that just gonna explode over night. you also have to factor in that the nba is 80 percent black and kids from cities see these guys and they are millionaires and famous and they are like hey I wanna play b-ball and get rich too, I doubt to many kids who never wrestled see Jordan Burroughs and want to be just like him, unlike the millions that saw Kobe Bryant and wanted to be just like him

    Taylor vs. Sadulaev

So admittedly, I haven't read through this entire thread (like I should've before responding). So I'm sure somebody has already mentioned this: While anyone with half a brain would think "Saduleav is too strong, fast, huge, technically sound, etc...." ( it was 100% my initial reaction, just a vision of DT getting rag dolled around the mat, like each Yazdani match early, but more-so.) We gotta give a little recognition to his circumstances. He is a bit of a baby/wussy/whatever, when it comes to losing and I dont think he would call out somebody he isnt confident he could beat. He used to be modest and silent, now he is all about "I'm the best in the world and I aim to dominate everyone in my path"... I understand he is trying to manufacture extra respect for his brand, but I hate it (Which doesnt matter, completely respect the guy, just hate the antics).... He trains with Snyder, and what this tells me... is he probably beats Snyder easily, and he wants to cement his claims of being unbeatable in the eyes of the public, and how better to prove this than beating the guy we consider the best wrestler in the world. Obviously Cox said "lets see who's the best in America".... I don't know if that'll ever happen but I would guess not, because it ruins his (DT's) whole hype train when he loses (I genuinely think he loses that match) I believe he handles Snyder, and has faith he can "gas" the Tank. (This also amplifies my belief in J'den over Snyder.... deep read) Just my 2cents....

    Flo apology?

They apologized as much as they should. Made it known they were disappointed and moved on. They were commentating, not manning the DOT line. Was it frustrating? Yes. Not nearly as frustrating as the live youth/ms tournament that was being broadcast from IA earlier in the day. At least most of the refs had on mask. Anyway... CP and Askren play well off of each other I believe. Love Bratke (OU and all) but Askren makes FRL. Ben would have been better commentating and not interviewing, but that just my opinion. I understand the need to sell adverts, but the boys should have been talking during a portion of the breaks. Definitely too long. I enjoyed all the matches. Grateful there was some wrestling. Looking forward to the next time.

Looks like they give 16 points for a 1st, a lot of These Wrestlers wrestled when there was only 3 Years eligibility, 12 Wrestlers on this list won NCAA EVERY year they were eligible, Certainly some of the 11 that only had 3 years eligibility would have been 4 Time Champs if they had 4 Years, Uetake not winning NCAA if he had a 4th year would have been shocking, Most people who saw him say Uetake was the best. I know people are going to bring up Dan Gable losing to Larry Owings as anything can happen and it can but, but the chances of ALL Eleven Including Uetake ALL Losing if they had a 4th Year has to be very close to ZERO.

There is also the Idea that schools need to successfully recruit their backyard...and everyone’s backyard is different. Having spent a lot of time in Montana, one of the best things that could happen would be to have more Native American kids involved in wrestling. Most of the reservation schools don’t offer wrestling. It would be good for the sport but even more so for those kids.

    Dake at 74Kg

Obviously he's biased - and as to @hammerlockthree's point, also Out There. But so what? Bias doesn't really come into play here. Nor does Palacio being Out There - Yianni isn't a wildman and he RT'd it. Why would anyone cut for a Flo exhibition? Arujau and Alvarez wrestled at 140. Taylor and Martin wrestled at, what, 200? My point is only that neither Dake nor Chamizo is going to have trouble with the cut to 74.

Are people just looking to find things to call racist? I am ALL for reducing racism in any form but sometimes if feels like people are trying to twist every thing into being racist. Again, some of you all are just going off the assumption "well they don't seem to have had a lot of people of color on their team...hence there must be systemic racism there". In my opinion that takes away the real fight to get rid of racism where it truly exists.

OK. I will restart. It is becoming more and more clear that there is a racist culture in the University of Iowa athletic department stemming from a sport that is highly inclusive of black athletes. The individual at the center of the allegations worked with the wrestling team as well and the wrestling team seems to have a smaller % of black athletes compared to other programs in the sport. Pushing glasses up to nose. Is this succinct enough that we can discuss now? Hopefully any references to "looks like a duck, quacks like a duck" type of bias and intolerance have been cleared here.
  41. 1 point
You seem to have a different definition with discussing and then accusing of not being a big boy. When you literally called yourself a hypocrite and called out country boys as "not tolerant" you started on the premise of accusing that type of person of being racist. That's not a discussion - that's an accusation. Don't play the victim and accuse people of not wanting to talk about it when you started it with a bias and intolerant statement.
  42. 1 point
Hypocritical is spot on....along with judgmental, stereotypical, etc. Trying to decide what your motive is here - Is it to A) dig for information so that you can call Gable and Brands racist? B) create a thread that lights up a firestorm? C) Show a sincere care for the black community and their involvement in the sport of wrestling D) Answers A and B. Hmmm...... BTW: to answer your request, Jeremiah Moody has great things to say about Iowa wrestling: https://www.farmersadvance.com/videos/sports/college/iowa/wrestling/2020/02/21/grueling-drill-iowa-wrestler-jeremiah-moody-could-barely-complete/4811932002/

    Dake at it again

I wouldn't lump all public figures together. There are experts in every field whose comments about issues in that field should be taken more seriously than those of the average Joe or Jane. Eg take Dake seriously when he's talking about wrestling; take a dermatologist seriously when he's talking about your skin. More complicated are situations where a layman makes a point that experts agree with. Eg. K Kardashian apparently had some things to say about prison reform that sounded a lot like what the Innocence Project has to say. Solution: listen to the experts and give a high-five to the laymen who agree . . . but remember the broken clock.

    Flo matches...

LBJ has revolutionized the grossness of anonymity. It used to be just, "you wouldn't say that to his face" which is normally a true statement but a non sequitur because it has nothing to do with the truth of the referenced comment. Not only does LBJ make his living on here attacking one of the few non-anonymous members, but his whole mode of argument is just throwing out meaningless macho nonsense based on him posturing as tough guy...all the while never discussing facts, ideas or wrestling. Its like he just asks himself, "what would Biff from back to the future say?"

    Taylor vs. Sadulaev

A few quick points to consider: First of all, Taylor has in fact beaten Cox and fairly soundly in one of the three matches they've wrestled. The last of the three matches was clearly marked by controversy as well as Cox's waterlogged body and the the small Oxbow lake that formed on the mat via his sweat glands. Secondly, I didn't say a win would prove that Taylor is the best P4P in the world, though he might have a reasonable case to make about that if he did. Thirdly, the transitive property arguments in wrestling and other sports or areas are complex and tricky at best and usually don't always pan out by any measure. Dake has both beaten and lost to Cox and also both beaten and lost to JB. Cox has won several championships at non-Olympic weights, as has Dake. JB and DT have won at (arguably tougher) Olympic weights. DT has hammered guys that Cox and Dake have barely beaten—e.g., Hasanov from AZE in the case of Dake. Fourthly, my main questions has to do with how well DT fares or would fare in relation to, first, Snyder, and secondly, Sadulaev. Fifth, Taylor seems to have improved markedly in the last few years (even if perhaps Cox and Dake have as well). And, finally, yes, a round robin tourney (if someone could pull it off; meaning put it together) would be great, especially in the (almost zero wrestling) World of Covid.
