    Greg Strobel

**** It is hard to comprehend. Greg was so many things to so many people. Any attempt to describe him will come up short. I often recall the many times we played golf. He was "real" in every way, no pretense, no excuses. First and foremost I considered him a friend. We have lost a great man. Rest In Peace Friend.

Taylor didn't fire! He gave a cheesy compliment. If people are gonna argue over the meaning of a statement sometimes the dictionary has to come out.

    Greg Strobel

From Oregon and an OSU fan have had the honor of meeting Strobel a couple of times. The first time was in the box seat section for Lehigh @ the '11 NCAA's in Philly. My first NCAA actually. Thoughts and prayers to his daughters and extended family and friends on both coasts. Rest in peace sir, enter into the joy of The Lord. Both Lehigh and Oregon State have published releases on his passing: https://lehighsports.com/news/2020/10/9/wrestling-lehigh-athletics-mourns-the-passing-of-greg-strobel.aspx https://osubeavers.com/news/2020/10/9/wrestling-oregon-state-national-champion-greg-strobel-passes-away.aspx

In Spey's defense I did not read either the original message or the follow up message that way. The original message that Spey replied to said senior nationals is the equivalent of last chance. No mention of competition level at all. Just one is equivalent to the other. And in one very important respect, they are not equivalent. Last chance does not allow any athletes already qualified for OTT to compete. Senior nationals does. Secondly, since there was talk at one time of using Senior Nationals as a last chance equivalent, it is easy to see how one may find problems with bnwtwg's statement. I appreciated Spey's detailed explanation.

    Best Wrestlers in Lehigh History

live too! the announcers were incredible, Shel Siegel and Larry Sheridan. Larry Sheridan has been around EIWA wrestling for 86 years -- his entire lifetime. The son of Billy Sheridan, Lehigh's iconic Hall of Fame wrestling coach, was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he still resides. As a teen he wrestled for Bethlehem High School (now Liberty High School) and for Mercersburg Academy, winning the National Prep School title at 154 pounds in 1950. He wrestled briefly for Lehigh University, but had to curtail competing in the sport as a sophomore due to repeated knee injuries. Shortly after his graduation from Lehigh, Sheridan became a wrestling official, a position that he excelled at for nearly 20 years. In 1968 he began announcing wrestling matches for Channel 39 in the Lehigh Valley along with EIWA Hall of Famer, Shel Siegel. The twosome covered all Lehigh meets, the EIWA finals, the PIAA finals, several East-West duals and several Russia vs USA matches. He retired from wrestling announcing for Channel 39 in 1994.

He was in the first episode. It wasn't an in depth interview, but he did talk about some experiences.

Great story. Can't think of any other sport where you could do that successfully (I'll try writing Nick Saban about a pass formation this weekend).

    Greg Strobel

Great guy. I only met him briefly once, but there was a time I reached out to him about a technical issue. A very good wrestler of mine lost a match to an opponent whom I believed was basically inferior,,, but had a tricky crab ride. My guy, a heavy favorite, lost by 6 points or so at a Christmas tournament. I reached out to a number of people about how to solve the crab ride problem. Coach Strobel answered, gave some good advice, and my guy turned the tables winning by major in the state semi. Basically a 14 point swing. It was very humbling and said a lot about him as a person, that he was willing to write an email to help out a total stranger. RIP

I don't want this to get lost on only the International forum. It's the most smack I think a non-Downey, non-Dake wrestler has talked in years. RIP to David Taylor.

not worth the view? seriously? not worth 33 minutes of your life watching a guy say he's just fine with not reaching what he spent the majority of his life striving for every day? that the journey is indeed more important than the end result? not worth the view??? the.mat.com strikes again...

They both went up to 86, and they still couldn't make the team (and Taylor still couldn't beat Dake). I'm with Lurker on this one. It would be revisionist to say Taylor outgrew 74. The excuse people made for him in his first year at 86 was he was too small and hadn't filled out the weight yet. No doubt he fled 74. That said, it was the right decision. Filled out Taylor is clearly better than stick figure Taylor ever was, and there is no way he is getting back close to 74 now. But JB still gets all the trash talking rights.

Wrong. He's got slew 6-2/7-2 type losses over the course since 2016 as well as a 10-0 drubbing to Nico. Where are you getting your info from?

You weren't going to get the full answer from Dresser about the Virginia Tech situation and you weren't going to get a full answer on why Brent left. Make no mistake, these coaches are damn near political figures. Finger pointing isn't going to get them anywhere, whether you are right or wrong. One thing I did like was the limited answer Brands gave. He took responsibility. He didn't go into great detail, but he took it on the chin. A lot of respect for that, but there is definitely a lot more to it than either let on. The way Brent answers you could just tell he was squirming for the political answer. I think he is genuinely happy and has moved on, but I think he definitely still feels wronged by that situation. Finally, it is good to see a guy that had a "win at all costs" persona, find peace with not getting there Internationally. Even better, he put everything into perspective. Blood is thicker than water. Losing your closest family member, makes everything else in life trivial, in comparison. He seems a stark contrast to Kolat and Terry Brands who still seem visibly wrecked by not reaching their highest goals. Not to say both don't seem to be in a good place, but Metcalf's intensity made me think he would be just as torn as they both seemed to be.

Two of the three have beaten him multiple times within the last 2-3 years. Neither of them, if they wish to include themselves in the conversation, are going to lay down for him. Neither would IMart.

    Cael Valencia

Anthony Valencia has had a better career than Andrew Alton. Either way, you're being oddly obtuse. Under this logic, EVERY top recruit should go to Penn State, regardless of personality fit or wrestling style, and that's just not how coaching works.

Why antagonize anybody? Just step on the mat and let the results do the talking like they did back in the day. Plus, maybe those guys are just woofin' for fun, like Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds.

I don't think its revisionism at all. It's not like Taylor just grew a few inches between seasons. After another unsuccessful attempt at making the team at 74, he specifically went on a weight gaining program to move up to 86. It was a specific, committed, intent....to move up from 74.

    nolf vs Bubba Jenkins 10/20

You referring to the JO match? I don't recall anyone saying that for the JO-Nolf match. If you're referring to the DT-Jenkins match, then also no. A) A young, scrawny-a$$ DT against PRIME Jenkins doesn't sniff an old over-the-hill MMA fighter who hasn't sniffed competitive wrestling in some time against a Nolf who defeats any version of PRIME Jenkins at folkstyle. Yes the match is freestyle, but this is going to look much worse than Caldwell.

Hahahahaha JB is awesome. Taylor is also an incredible talent but I'm not as big a fan of him since he tweeted about Cox, apparently didn't want Nickal at his weight and now this. To me (and my opinion doesn't mean much, I know) DT comes off as arrogant and kinda pretentious. JB is an all timer. In my top 2 for sure.

Ah, yes. The super rich of society are famous for their anarchism and disdain for the social order they sit atop. I am very smart and know what these words mean.

Source? Haha Ben Askren is also in crypto. Therefore he is an anarchist. Jeez guys, lay off the facebook and fox news. I feel like I could get a couple of you guys to buy anything. All that it takes is to float an idea, and then convince you the absence of any evidence for it not to be true is enough to make it true.
