Duh! But the question for him was whether to continue to wrestle and day-of weigh-ins may have been a factor. Making weight even the day before, I would think, was never easy given his college weight and probably got harder over time.

    Mark Hall?

Yes, I think that applies to 79 and 92 weights. Cox and Dake are definitely world class, but those weights are weak compared to 86 and 97. Just my $0.02. mspart

Which is why we need more 10th-12th grade trade schools. These kids don't even want to go to school at 16 years old. I hire these guys and all say they wished they had a 3 year trade school to go to instead of the 1 year they went to. Keep in mind 10-12 trade schools still teach the basic fundamentals like english, math, etc...

    Head Pinch Situations

Here are two situations from the RTC Cup. The first situation was scored as 4 for Zillmer. This is pretty obviously a mistake. Macchiavello is clearly on his knee. Second situation is a little tougher. It was scored 2 & 2. There's a case to be made for 4 & 2, but I think Pantaleo was on his knee, so it can't be 4. https://gfycat.com/ashamedwastefulfoal For fun, here's the exchange between Arujau and Garrett. It was scored 4 for Arujau and upheld on review. If you think you can say with 100% certainty what the right call is, you can log right off. My biggest question is whether Arujau stepping out with this left foot before he scored makes a difference. https://gfycat.com/unhealthycleverbengaltiger

    Metcalf

I revived my Flo subscription to watch the RTC Cup, but them also watched Metcalf. It's Flo's best documentary in my view. When he was wrestling, Metcalf was great, but seemed like a jerk. The doc rehabilitates him and presents him at peace with his relative failure in international competition. One thing it did not cover was whether it was hard to cut to 143, six pounds below his college weight, to wrestle internationally.

I do not get the great hype anymore of Steveson? I got it before his college career with his HS and Jr world success but now at what 21-22 years of age no NCAA title or no Sr world team member let a lone not a Sr medal's. Yet people talk about him possible being a GOAT at HWT? I agree he has talent but I would also say there are 2-3 USA HWT's that could beat him and I would not be shocked. JMO

Your evolution of premise throughout this thread is frustrating. You initial question was whether it was hard for Brent to make 143 during his career-- which I noted that while it certainly would have been more laborious to achieve the weight, due to procedures at the time is was likely no more difficult to actually complete successfully at this lower weight. While a discussion surrounding speculation on if the change in the international weigh-in procedures discouraged a comeback from Brent after his initial retirement better suits the points you want to make later in this thread, it is simply unrelated to what we have been talking about. To cap it all off, you are the one who posed the initial discussion points and chose to disregard accurate and relevant answers. I don't think I want to play with you anymore.

    Head Pinch Situations

In the 2nd, the knees were pulled off the mat as part of the throw. Initially, I didn't think Vito had actually started the throw before the step out but now maybe he did. I happened to stop at the position below thinking his foot was out but upon further looking that foot might have been in the air- so as to not be out yet.

    Mark Hall?

Ringer was noncommittal when asked about returning to 79 kg and Valencia said his long term plan was 86 kg. If Dake stays down at 74 then Mark is the #1. There is speculation that once JB heads to Penn with Hall he'll go 79(or if you're as delusional as Askren, 86). In any situation I believe Mark Hall will be a top 5 guy, even at 86. He's a tiny guy, but he would absolutely be a factor at 86 if he were to enter the trials.

I think that this is why some on a wrestling board have given some negative reactions to his tweet. The eye test suggests he could one of the best ever, but he is pronouncing his retirement at a time when he clearly hasn't shown that kind of mastery of his craft, with no appearances in an NCAA final or on a senior world team. And he's calling out a guy who he lost to twice due to mental errors/lack of urgency. Seems natural for passionate wrestling fans to see a disconnect.

    Head Pinch Situations

i love these questions from you... the first is a bad call, but, i can see it being missed in real time because only one knee was down... if it was reviewed and still called a 4 it is shameful... the second is definitely two for the pinch and 2 for the guy getting caught on his back... the third is clearly 4 for vito... he stops the inital shot... changes direction... then brings him over... that is 4 all day... when the offensive wrestler steps one foot out of bounds from the initiation of the move, continuation goes into effect... this was rule change a couple of years ago... now, had vito stepped out, planted that foot, and then started the throw, it would/should have been ruled a step out and 1 for garrett...

Do you extend the same thought to arts and academic departments? Do you extend the same thought to high schools? Schools are diverse environments. I think it's healthy when a school support arts, athletics, a variety of academic departments, and so on. The tuition or taxpayer money of a particular individual helps support all these things, even though they may not care for sports, arts, many academic departments, etc. That doesn't mean that every sport or art or subject should be in every school, but I think it is healthy when these things are part of a school culture.

    Flo story on Bloomberg

They are almost certainly not profitable. I know some of the pay scales at Flo - employees are not competitively paid. The executives/board probably don’t have crazy salaries. They most likely rely on equity for the high comp. at this point, the equity is likely worth a good amount, but isn’t liquid. my best guess is they are shopping for a buyer, shooting for around $1 billion (10x ARR would = $900 million). If that happens, the executive team and investors will probably do well for themselves. I have no idea what the equity allotment is towards other employees, but based on their reputation, probably very low. Pyles and team were hired because they are were wrestling fanboys, which I love. That also means they had very little leverage when discussing compensation, equity, etc. I know this from my experience going from an avid MMA fan to being employed in the industry due to my passion and dedication to the sport - that was awhile ago (I’m not in that industry anymore).

    Mark Hall?

Hall is a super high level talent. We are just stacked at 74kg. I bet he could do some damage at 79, especially if Dake stays down. I bet Hall would’ve medaled the last 2 years at 79kg. Those weights are very weak. Dake is world class, but his whole “not getting scored on” at 79 thing is at least partially due to the weak weight.

Brett was likely bigger post college. Also, traveling internationally (long flights) can impact hydration, which is critical to control during a weight cut.

    Iran Wrestling News

This was supposed to be something interesting but the other team decided to not use its best wrestlers and save them for tomorrow! Iran-Mall team won 10-0, Atri, Ehsanpour, Hosseinkhani, Goleij and Zare had easy or walkover wins, Hassan Yazdani also beat his opponent Alireza Karimi (not the famous Karimi) 10-0 in 2 minutes https://www.telewebion.com/episode/2446224 tomorrow matches won't change much, both of these teams will advance from this group. we will have the final four next week. the club who has Amir Mohammad Yazdani also doesn't like the idea of sending him to Serbia. they are trying to revert that decision!

    Goodbye Non-Revenue Sports

Colleges should only have sports that are supported by private donations and revenue. Or perhaps no sports at all. It’s absurd that colleges force students to borrow money in order to pay into athletic budgets that exist to provide other students with fun. It’s also absurd that taxpayers are similarly forced to subsidize others’ fun. At the end of the day, school should be about kids obtaining job skills, and not about forcing students and taxpayers to pay for others’ fun. I thought Americans hated redistributing wealth like that.

Anyone can make their area better than it is, but it does take work. Can't just point fingers at others all the time. No one is stopping anyone from getting up every day and making their neighborhood a better place.

    Do RTC Cup matches count?

I do think the RTC cup matches should count for the rankings Flo does because there was transparency about rules and weights, especially since rankings only exist for entertainment. That said, I think it's a mistake to use a result from a day before +3 weigh in to seed an event that is scratch weight with a 2 hour weigh in, and I hope that isn't what happens. I would like a better source than Nomad as to what will count.

    Do RTC Cup matches count?

Crazy how we are probably some of the more in the know people in regards to wrestling and we still don’t know how the process and even many of the rules work. I’m beginning to think that Sammy Julian is the only dude in the country that actually knows the rules of freestyle.

the student loan crisis is in part due to a degree in something that doesn't pay, translate etc... think of all the degrees issued by the high cost liberal arts schools, and govt subsidizing the loans means the cost goes up and up and up

A top sports nutritionist tells me that the body rehydrates at the rate of 32 oz. per hour of recovery for the average middleweight. While achieving 143 may have been more challenging, at the first whistle of the first match, Brent was definitely more hydrated internationally than in college. All of Brent's college matches were contested with 1-2 hours recovery, while international wrestling conducted the weigh-in the day prior for the duration of his career. Considering the difference in procedures, most coaches would agree that 149 & 143 are relatively equivalent classifications.

    Mark Hall?

Sorry gents, I meant mine as sarcasm. To me Hall is a 74 kegger guy through and through. He has adamantium bones or something, though. That and he just doesn't want to cut. Don't take that wrong, he is good, fast, and strong enough for 79... he just always looks undersized.
