Yep. What they weighed in at today has got to be far less relevant than their weight classes, which are 25 pounds apart. Taylor is carrying around a ton more muscle than Burroughs. The eye test made that clear. Put another way, compare what Taylor looks like today as a full 86 kg'er to tour memory of him as a 165 lb collegian/74 kg freestyler. Could that second guy have had a chance against that first guy or would he get thrown around the mat? Given that advantage, not a tremendous result to win 4-4 with the only takedown being literally a gimme. But I do agree with Taylor's point about his finding a way to win being extremely important. He has already shown that he is a buzzsaw against guys his weight -- his Worlds dominance, the destruction of MyMar. A somewhat flat performance today -- but he won, and JB couldn't flip the switch like he always does against U.S. competition. Compare today's second period to what he did to Zahid. Taylor is a much more formidable guy than he used to be.

It just felt like all Taylor cared about was making sure he won. He was SO tentative. That's the part that gives me pause with him, there's just something a bit off in his mental game. The thing is, there really isn't anybody in the world who can take him to those deep mental waters other than guys that are smaller or larger than him. EDIT: Also, it's disingenuous to argue that because they were physically close in weight there was no advantage. Burroughs was carrying a ton of extra weight to reduce some of the size disparity, but he can make 74 kg, David Taylor can not.

Not close to a TD? He had his leg in the air. I get it finishing on DT is tough, but not close? That slip cost JB. Not sure if it was the giant logo on the mat, or remnants of Cox’s sweat! Hats off to both guys for putting it on the line. Good go for both of them. DT doesn’t have that crazy gas tank he used to have. Needs to compete a ton like he did in the run up to his world title. Shame he isn’t going to France I take it? Man McKenna is looking so good. Wasn’t close with Gross and Chittum is a gonna be a problem in college eventually. Very impressive.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess that the World Championship at 79kg gives Dake a bye to the semis. And I agree with you; I misspoke, as I don't think Dake will beat JB easily, but I still feel that Dake will beat him. I don't think Taylor brought his best to this match; he should have racked up more points, and we know that when he lets fly, he scores in bunches. He made a serious mistake: leaving JB in striking distance. He should have tried to go into the final minute with a 5 point lead. I agree with Vakattack that Taylor wrestled a tentative match, and that's not a good approach for David. He wrestles his best when he wrestles full out and tries to score as many points as possible. As for JB, I wish that 79kg were an Olympic weight, because at this point I think that is the weight where Jordan could still perform at his best. 74kg with the current weigh-ins saps too much of his strength and endurance.

Maybe your being too hard on him? DT looked every bit the world beater after wrestling Myles Martin. He just beat a 5x World and Olympic Champ in JB- and can you remember JB ever being out of a match at the end? So perhaps we cut Taylor a little slack here- he controlled the match for most of it and shut it down 90 seconds out. I mean, even pre-injury he wasn't steamrolling Torreblanca from Cuba- they were close matches and you probably weren't worried then.

after seeing what DT did to MM this summer it is hard to argue he was not all up in his own head for this match... he was doing everything he could not to lose this match... im not sure i blame him...

Yeah, but JB was coming in extra fat. DT had to cut to make weight (I am guessing).

He got two for a takedown then he got two for exposure.

for all the hype of this match it's hard to live up to it without a best 2 out of 3 - with the money involved and hype i think best 2 out of 3 would of been better. Good match but fell a little short of expectations imo considering the lack of action

So, a lot of people thought Burroughs might have been testing the waters with this match (for next cycle) Does he think A) Damn, I'm right there with the best in the World at 86kgs. I can win here. B)Damn, I wrestled one exhibition match at 86kgs and I almost tore my groin running into a wall, and couldn't get a takedown. I don't want to do this for a whole tournament. ? I think Burroughs was much more impressive than Taylor tonight, but I don't think he can consistently beat world-level guys at 86kgs, even if he puts on some muscle (which is harder in your 30s)

Well I thought the undercard had some very good performances, especially Cody Chittum, he put on quite a performance.

Much better? I get the moral victory point of keeping it to criteria, but I was much more impressed with DT than JB who did nothing until he felt safe attacking when DT went into backpedal mode. And even then his legendary sprint never kicked in.

JB weighed in at 181 and per his admission has not started his descent to 163. DT a little under 189. I get DT had a few hours to rehydrate, but it wasn't 20 lbs. Definitely a noticeably size advantage, but the weigh-in weight is closer to the wrestling weight now than it was when Dake wrestled Cox with the old weigh-in rules.

I expected DT to win. And he did ... but ... felt like I was expecting more from DT. And mindset of defense defense defense for the last 2 minutes .. I wonder if his head was in the right place. Didn't seem like the typical DT. That said, much better that he won.

No doubt about that. If Burroughs ever retires, we need him to learn how to teach Sports Psych to USAWrestling forever, maybe starting with DT.

It feels like he could have kept going back to that knee pull with success, but didn't. Really surprised he didn't finish the first time. He's usually automatic. Played with fire a bit. Was definitely in complete control regardless of the final score.

With Zahid hitting the slopes and blowing his eligibility I strongly felt Brooks had a legit chance to begin the climb to 4x champ last year. He could do it with the 2021 freebie year. Probable? No. Asterisk if it somehow happens? Absolutely. Possible? Very much so.

I trained with guys WAY above my level. Lower level guys still managed to give me fits. Aaron Burr for one.

Hey Flo! If you want to grow the sport's viewer base broadcast JB vs DT on Youtube for free! There was free promotion of the event on JRE and non-wrestling Rogan fans could tune in. What better opportunity to expose the sport to the world than to broadcast the event on the largest video streaming platform in the WORLD. Monitize the video to make some revenue and who knows if you do a good enough job you may create some wrestlng fans which can lead to more subscribers/bigger renevue streams.

BTN puts most of their big matches on youtube within 24 hours. Which is probably the best of both worlds IMO. Available for free eventually, but if you want it live you need to pay up.
