It is crazy to me how many people are taking Suriano. Suriano is not running through a bracket with Lee, Fix, Gilman, Gross and Vito in it. He can beat one of those guys, but he is not beating multiple in one day.

Ok, I'll give you the rule, and then an interpretation of what was called. Your puzzlement was a warranted because the mechanics of the official was a little bizarre. It is unlikely you would see these mechanics at the open level in the USA. Not sure if the differences in this case are related to the skill of the official, or just geography. The key to all of this is that par-terre restarts in freestyle ONLY occur in the event of a foul on the bottom man. Leaving the mat in danger is not cause to restart action grounded, unless it is the opinion of the officiating crew that the athlete in danger left the wrestling area voluntarily. I will offer that when a wrestler is on his back it makes it a little easier on the refs to interpret that he wanted to get out. Thus, the first sequence was called a caution for fleeing and the second was not. Since we're here, I will dig a little deeper into what made this so hard to parse out. In the first sequence, a flee call was certainly warranted. What was weird was that the whistle did not signal a caution + 2 for the top man to indicate the foul. Again, no grounded restart without this caution. I think the most likely explanation is that the whistle did not observe a flee but the judge and chairman called and confirmed the foul off camera. Or the whistle has terrible mechanics and indicated the flee in Russian or something. The second sequence is even worse mechanics. No flee is called even though I think it should have been. To make it worse, the bottom man is given a stern verbal attention after it goes out, but no penalty, costing the attacking wrestler his advantage. The attention should have come prior to the athlete leaving the wrestling area with a command of "place", indicating to the bottom man to make every effort to stay in bounds. This command should also come from the whistle at the head of the athlete, further emphasizing to not go out of bounds with his physical presence. If the place command is not heeded, again penalize a caution and restart in parterre. I went through some gymnastics to explain and excuse the referee in the first situation, but not this time. The best I can do is say the no-call here is probably best because of the terrible job the referee did warning the bottom man to keep his defense in bounds.

    New FloFilm: 'Toughest Bracket Ever'

I feel like we created the film for them from the last 12 years of threads on the toughest bracket. Will our names show up in the credits?

I'm with you but I also wouldn't be surprised if he did take the leap. He has head/hands defense down pat, offense looked good in Nice, but the big question is the gas tank after sucking down - ESPECIALLY if he makes it to day 2. Lee, Gilman, and Vito are the only ones that I'm not worried about being affected by the cut now that Fix won't be taking swigs out of the wrong water bottle to cut any more.

Thanks so much for the explanation! This is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't really start watching a lot of wrestling until late 2019, but I couldn't recall par-terre starts in FS prior to that one. (I have already sent similar inquiries in the GR par-terre when I couldn't tell how one was worse and it seemed like a severe penalty.) Thanks again!

    Is Dake a Big Story?

I have a point probably deserving of it's own thread, but I might as well deposit it here. The 2kg allowance is a relic of a prior era in need of adjustment. Virtually all friendly competition at the senior level is contested with an allowance of 2kg. This dates back as long as I can remember, well before the current quad of same-day weigh ins. With 17+ hours recovery, saving the wrestlers the excruciating final 4.4 pounds for regular season events seemed about right, and probably had nominal impact on results as the rehydration and night of sleep took care of that. Under the current same day weigh in system, I agree that 2kg is too much. It will have greater impact on outcomes than before, and this matters because I have long been a defender of these friendly contests counting for seedings and rankings. I find a 1 kg allowance far more appropriate for these non-championship or trials events. We made comprehensive changes to the weigh in procedures but never stopped to reconsider if our allowance policy needed revision as well.

A little less than 2 years ago, Ben Askren got picked up and dropped on his head by Robbie Lawler, and Lawler then proceeded to unload on Askren with everything he had for 30 to 45 seconds. Ben composed himself, got up and proceeded to choke Lawler out a few minutes later. People think getting hit by a youtuber is going to affect Ben? And some think he is going to get knocked out? Not a chance. That is seriously underestimating the toughness he developed as a world class athlete for 15+ years. Ben's striking was horrendous during his UFC stint (and marginally better earlier), but I assume he is going to improve at least some as he focuses his training for this fight. Ben predicts he will win by TKO in the 7th round because he will wear Paul out. That sounds about right to be, but I predict a round or a few earlier.

That’s only a B or C at best. I don’t know the exact stats, but I would think less than 50% of duals have been postponed, so I’m pretty comfortable saying 70-80% for NCAA’s. And as mentioned hopefully we’ve passed the peak which should help (along with the vaccine)

    Iran Wrestling News

it seems all human right activists like foxnews, Saudi Arabia and MEK now care about every single murder case in Iran. that's great, isn't it ? that kid killed someone in a brawl and unfortunately there is death penalty in Iran for murder. and being a wrestler is not supposed to save you. they postponed the execution for 5 years. per rules in Iran, in cases like this it's up to the victim's family to forgive or not, some big names like Sourian tried to talk to the victim's family and convince them to "forgive" but that plan failed unfortunately.

    ACC Network announcers?

I actually thought the same thing when I caught it. They offered good in-match and video review insight, had plenty background information to offer in between scoring attacks, and above all else they didn’t feel the need to give a play by play of everything single action when it was clearly viewable on the screen.

Man how good is Brian Smith?

He's obviously an excellent coach/recruiter and shaper of young men. That being said, he has the added bonus of having Ben/Max Askren selling some of the best Wisconsin high school wrestlers on his program.

Umbach would be 118 years old if he were alive today. When he graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State, the wrestling world was still a few years shy of seeing the first NCAA tournament. He was so instrumental in building collegiate Wrestling in the south. The brain child behind SEIWA & the head of SEC Wrestling. Nearly every team that added Wrestling in the south during Umbach's time has since dropped. Yet I think you'd be shocked of how many schools DID have Wrestling at one time. I also wouldn't trust endowments to save or secure Wrestling. Bucky O'Connor set up a permanent endowment at Notre Dame to ensure Wrestling would last forever after his son Pat was murdered in Europe in between his sophomore & junior year. O'Connor passed away in 1991 & Dick Rosenthal & company began an immediate coaxing of Bucky's wife/Pat's mom. By the start of the 1992-1993 school year, it was announced that Wrestling would be dropped & the Pat O'Connor endowment would fund other sports. How any Wrestling fan can cheer Fighting Irish football is beyond me. I want to puke everytime I see it.

It will come down to whether or not any of the virus variants take hold here. Right now the prevalence of the UK variant is low but growing and the Brazil and South Africa variants have now been detected. These variants are reputed to be much more transmissible but not more deadly (though recently the UK cast some doubt on that). The good news today is cases are going down. The bad news is that if the UK and other variants are here and spread like they did in other countries the case rate reductions may slow down or possibly reverse. There are two big unknowns: 1. Will the US have the same experience as the UK and other countries with the new variant. The experience they had was rapid increases in new cases and the new variant becoming the dominant strain. 2. If the new variants “take over” what will federal, state and local governments do about it and when will they do it. I think even if the new strains rapidly progress it will take till mid March for them to be dominant. In the meantime, if the pace of vaccinations coil up due to two new vaccines coming to market and increase production, then this should help. Also, no one knows for sure how rapidly the UK variance is spreading in the US because we don’t sequence very many of the samples we get when someone tests positive. A grim take on what things might look like can be found in Denmark where they are sequencing every sample. Right now case rates are dropping there too but what they are finding is that cases of the new variant are rapidly increasing, but since they currently represent a small fraction of all cases, the overall effect swamped by the reducing number of cases of “old school Corona” (Corona classic?). But the UK variant is growing so rapidly that they predict this whole situation will reverse by mid February. Meanwhile in the US the CDC forecasts the UK variant will take till March to become dominant but their models are necessarily going to have bigger variance simply because they have less hard data to go one. And our vaccination is going to slowly now though we can hope that things may speed up it would be wise to take a “believe it when we see it” stance.

    Iran Wrestling News

Yes there is the death penalty in Iran for murder. I dislike the Islamic Republic and even disagree with the death penalty (because you will make a mistake and kill someone innocent inevitably) but a lot but people make weird criticisms lately. They do a lot worse than having the death penalty for certain crimes. Does Fox News want the death penalty removed in America? If you're a country like Norway or something without the death penalty then feel free to say how bad Iran is and I will happily agree.

Would have to guess in the first scenario, where you said sitting straight up, if not completely straight up he would have been considered in exposure. Going out of bounds ‘on your back’...ie in exposure....would be the only reason I could see returning in parterre. Although I haven’t seen that in awhile. Don’t know if that’s cuz I haven’t seen a match in a while where that happened or because they took it out. But that’s the only thing I can think of.

    Olympics cancelled?

For all their faults, and God knows they have many, there is still no sporting event that can equal the joy, drama, and excitement that the summer Olympics bring to the world every four years. Having so many countries get together to compete in sports shared by so many cultures throughout the world can't help but lead to amazing stories and incredible drama. In the past the various countries including us have disrupted the games with politics which is unfortunate. This year the main problems affecting the Games are really outside the control of the IOC or the countries that are trying to hold the competition. Patience is required by all as they try to decide the best way to proceed during what is an unprecedented set of obstacles. I for one am still looking forward with great anticipation to these games not only to watch my favorite sport performed at the highest level by the world's best wrestlers but to also watch many other athletes from sports that I don't normally pay that much attention to. In my mind the Olympics are an amazing event and the world would be much worse off without them. PS - none of the above is meant as a defense of the IOCs many shortcomings which still need a lot of work:)

    Is a season necessary?

It's essentially a free year. Therefore if teams perform the appropriate health checks and daily procedures, then it is worth it on all accounts. From a selfish standpoint, it's necessary. I want something to look forward to.

I’m not buying that Coach Clemsen isn’t the guy yet. Last year was tough no doubt, but COVID hasn’t exactly made it easy to get his system fully implemented. Let’s also not forget that he’s got 4 absolute studs coming in with the 2021 class.
