Man how good is Brian Smith?

I don't think it showed any internal problems. He basically blamed Mizzou for not developing him into a national champ and top freestyle guy. He is definitely going to have a better environment for continuing his freestyle career up at Iowa, but I would have like to hear him say some of the blame falls on him and he just wanted a change of environment. It's not like Smith hasn't had any National Champs. I'll still be rooting for him to win a title this year (if he loses, I hope it's to Hart). He also left to go to Colorado before the part-time at Ohio St. came into play. As great as Brian Smith has been at developing college wrestlers, the freestyle program doesn't have much going for it. It was definitely a deserved call, but it wasn't a Desanto flying kimura. It was a frustrated young kid seeing his AA dreams disappear before his eyes. Almost understandable, though not condonable. Cost Mizzou a team trophy, but you can't blame Smith for it. Not like Eblen had a history of unsportsmanlike behavior. Smith has done about as good a job at a school like Mizzou as anybody could. If you are a kid not being recruited by Iowa or PSU, then Mizzou is definitely worth a look.

Many of you probably remember me making a similar request a couple of years ago. I'm a former Cornell wrestler who had the misfortune of being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma several years ago. It is an incurable blood cancer, but I am fortunate to be faring well. Others are not so fortunate which is why I am partaking in a fundraiser for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), raising money to help them find a cure. A couple years ago I partook in an arduous 10 day trek to Patagonia with my wife in order to raise money. Many of you in the wrestling community graciously contributed to the cause. This year, I am off to Alaska, where there will be more Grizzlies than people!! Please note, the cost of the trips are covered by corporate sponsors. 100% of what I raise goes towards research. Any help is greatly appreciated. Click the link below and it will take you to the fundraiser, where you can learn more about this insidious disease. Thank you! http://give.share-a-link.top/613lcbgf

    New FloFilm: 'Toughest Bracket Ever'

I don't know if it's been previously announced, but just saw an ad for it during the current broadcast. I feel like it was made for old school posters, haha. Looks like they got all or most of the participants to give interviews. My understanding of the interpersonal dynamics is that neither Caldwell (obviously) or Palmer like Metcalf, still to this day. I doubt Bubba's a fan either. Could be some salty talk going on. I'm super here for it.

The two points were 1 after the 125 match which I think were either coaches or the wrestler threw his headgear and the other for bench infraction after the FALL at 165.

I'm with you on this. And I will go a step further. It is because Flo shares their logic that everyone who likes to argue, will argue. Personally, I have expressed areas where I think they don't follow their professed logic. That is my problem. I just can't leave it alone. But as for the results of their logic? Yeah, sure, why not. Good fodder, gets them clicks (mine included), and is normally of no import. After all we achieve simplification eventually. 2020 excepted. Now that I type that last sentence, it gets me thinking. To the extent that their, or anyone else's, ranks impact the thinking of coaches who then impact the seeding of wrestlers at conference tourneys and the NCAAs, they matter. Marginally. And in a year where seedings determined All American status, their import probably peaked. Let's hope they are meaningless again this year. And let's hope someone takes exception to something I wrote and wants to argue.

Getting married in your early twenties is a pretty healthy decision. The modern idea that we should extend our adolescence in our mid 30s is not a recipe for a happy life.

There are probably 10 others we could name. Thomas Haines was once a PSU commit b4 signing on with Ryan. Steen's reasons for switching are no less valid to him than Haines were.

He won't. I myself wouldn't mind collaborating with a bunch of folks here. See what we could come up with. Do it similar to the coaches poll. Rank the top 10. #1 gets 10 points all the way down. Could do 15, 20, or 25 as well. We can call them TheMat KW Rankings.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. Thank you for your kind words. There are a lot of treatments out there. Fortunately, I'm still on my first, but realize I'll eventually have to change things up. Strange, supposedly a rare cancer. There are 3 people, including myself, on my block that have it. When I was first diagnosed, my aunt told me she had two neighbors that had it. Scary stuff. On another note, any donation will be greatly appreciated.

Taylor has not looked great recently. He beats Yazdani through weathering the storm and then never stopping. If he can’t do that anymore, Yazdani will win and it will be ugly to watch. Im picking Taylor of course, but I think Iranian fans may be pleasantly surprised.

    Angel Rivera must be stopped

How long are they going to let this clown keep calling matches? He's been embarrassing for years. Even when he's the second ref he can't help himself. The extra match at 141 in the tOSU-MSU dual is one of the most inexplicable things I've ever seen. What on earth happened here? You have a scramble where about 8 points were scored between the two wrestlers and instead of trying to figure it out, they just say f*** it, put 30 seconds back on the clock and rewrestle, robbing D'Emilio of a victory. Correct score btw is 2 td D'Emilio, 2 nf D'Emilio on the peterson, 2 reversal Santos, 2 reversal D'emilio. What a joke.

Spencer has a shot at four titles, Mekhi Lewis and any freshman has a shot at five titles. Maybe Yianni, I don't really know the eligibility situation over there.

The effect of the grab is conjecture? Despite it it being literally the thing that prevented a Palmer score? Without the singlet grab the match turns into a 4-3 Palmer match. Now, can one legitimately argue Metcalf would’ve escaped and won 6-4/6-5 in regulation or OT? Most certainly. Of course scoring the go ahead takedown in a 3-2 match could make a difference

The same deserves to be said about Cael and crew. Starocci turned the guy twice and almost had another tilt in the 2nd. If he rode the guy for a full period, put him back in the saddle for the 3rd so he can work another turn or two (and possibly get a pin).

Again this post was 7 years ago & I've read up/learned a lot since then. It's not black & white. It's very gray and very complicated. Texas in itself is a very strange state regarding collegiate wrestling. An excellent example of what you are talking about in terms of 'varsity' wrestling is LeTourneau https://johnnythompsonnum1.blogspot.com/2020/08/gone-lost-forgotten-their-best_14.html They competed in the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) which was never official. Yet the school treated the program as varsity status. They were listed in the yearly annuals, the media guides and in the yearbooks. The school recognized the team & advertised for duals. They even hosted a tournament.

I absolutely have to disagree with the statement "He will have a tougher time winning the spot then he will winning a medal" - I only wish that were true. The 57 kg weight at the Olympics will be far deeper and more full of high level hammers than our Olympic trials. Probably Ugaev from Russia, Alti from Turkey, The Kazak guy and Micic are both tough as well whoever the Iranians and India send. Beyond that you will have very tough guys added to the field from the Asian and Euro qualifiers. as well as the last chance qualifier. Japan has 2 top guys competing for their spot in Higuchi and Takahashi, the Asian qualifier will also have hammers from No Korea, Mongolia and the remaining Stans trying to punch their tickets to Tokyo. The Euros will be even more loaded with Geogia, Armenia, Azerberjian, Ukraine, Belarus, and a bunch of other tough guys trying to break through. Those that don't get another shot at the last chance qualifier. Whoever gets through you can bet that the bracket at the Olympics will be considerably tougher than the one in State College.

    ? On FS Rules

Ok, I'll give you the rule, and then an interpretation of what was called. Your puzzlement was a warranted because the mechanics of the official was a little bizarre. It is unlikely you would see these mechanics at the open level in the USA. Not sure if the differences in this case are related to the skill of the official, or just geography. The key to all of this is that par-terre restarts in freestyle ONLY occur in the event of a foul on the bottom man. Leaving the mat in danger is not cause to restart action grounded, unless it is the opinion of the officiating crew that the athlete in danger left the wrestling area voluntarily. I will offer that when a wrestler is on his back it makes it a little easier on the refs to interpret that he wanted to get out. Thus, the first sequence was called a caution for fleeing and the second was not. Since we're here, I will dig a little deeper into what made this so hard to parse out. In the first sequence, a flee call was certainly warranted. What was weird was that the whistle did not signal a caution + 2 for the top man to indicate the foul. Again, no grounded restart without this caution. I think the most likely explanation is that the whistle did not observe a flee but the judge and chairman called and confirmed the foul off camera. Or the whistle has terrible mechanics and indicated the flee in Russian or something. The second sequence is even worse mechanics. No flee is called even though I think it should have been. To make it worse, the bottom man is given a stern verbal attention after it goes out, but no penalty, costing the attacking wrestler his advantage. The attention should have come prior to the athlete leaving the wrestling area with a command of "place", indicating to the bottom man to make every effort to stay in bounds. This command should also come from the whistle at the head of the athlete, further emphasizing to not go out of bounds with his physical presence. If the place command is not heeded, again penalize a caution and restart in parterre. I went through some gymnastics to explain and excuse the referee in the first situation, but not this time. The best I can do is say the no-call here is probably best because of the terrible job the referee did warning the bottom man to keep his defense in bounds.

Man how good is Brian Smith?

Important to remember that these guys, while men, are still young and growing/maturing. It was a good learning experience I'm sure though I know mizzou and its fans would have preferred a third place trophy over fourth. It is easy to forget this sometimes as fans and I know I have done it myself on these forums. Glad to hear he took the moment to heart and regretted it. Shows solid signs of character growth on his part.
