Congrats to the program on a strong showing at UWW Junior Nationals. The future looks bright. 3 Champs and 4 other placers. The team is young and will continue to get better.

Most underrated part of Brian Smith's tenure is his commitment to growing the sport in the state. Missouri is now starting to produce elite talent (Rocky Elam, Josh Saunders) and that was started 20+ years ago by Coach Smith. I am very glad he is able to reap what he sowed.

It was a bold move, but I thought my wife might like something similar in terms of showing of my stuff. I ripped of my shirt, flexed, and said “817 credit score, baby!” She wasn’t impressed, actually annoyed. Probably in part due to the dad bod..

    J'Den Cox Misses Weight

I am an unashamed J'Den Cox fanboy. He came and did a camp for us a few years ago. Within hours he memorized the name of every kid at the camp (~40 kids) and called every kid by name each time he spoke to them. The kids fell in love with him instantly and each one truly felt a connection with J'Den. I was so impressed. I love his perspective in that video. Go get 'em!

Mizzou lineup is scary good for the next few years and very young. It will be fun to watch. NCAAs are going to be intense with Penn State, Iowa, Cornell, Michigan, Mizzou, and a few others with stacked lineups.

    65kg qualification

The general tone of this thread has gotten pretty rear view mirror moralistic and hypocritical. News flash, highly competitive and successful athletes are often assholes, or can come off that way to people who don’t understand the lens(es) they view the universe through. This holds across most sports. Unless you see that person in practice or at breakfast on a Tuesday, don’t pretend you know anything about them. Also, anyone saying that somebody can’t be bullied because of who they are or have become, especially in High School, really needs to take it down a notch.

    J'Den Cox Misses Weight

At what point is it too late to make weight in your opinion? What if he comes in at 6pm and finally makes weight? Would you bend the rules then? When they arrived they should have noticed people making weight and replenishing, that isn't hard to figure out at this level. No way are they noticing a good amount of people weighing in and doing official weigh-ins fairly quickly when the weigh-in room and workout facility is one and the same. That is the part that baffles me the most in the whole situation. Not until 7:55 did KJ or J'den once figure out that weigh-ins were at a different time than they originally thought. They hard part is it doesn't seem like J'den was doing anything nefarious to gain an advantage and they legitimately were on a wrong schedule. However, protocols are in place to prevent this and it is the coach/athlete's responsibility to adhere to the weigh-in rules and times.

Also on another note I seen that Cox is going to go back down to 92 at the Worlds after his weight miss fiasco. I don't know if Ghasempour is going to 86 or 92 for the worlds (depends on Yazdani) but there is a great chance Ghasempour wrestles Cox at 92 and that is a match I would love to see

Would anyone not be? He sure didn't look too pleased when it happened with David Carr immediately coming over and politely restraining him, while talking him down. You don't let your friends do that without retaliation, let alone someone that bugged you so much you nicknamed him "ford focus"..........

The Purler Wrestling Academies, (STL - Nick, KC - Tony), should be mentioned as well. The Purler Academies have been around for 20 plus years now. They were really the first of their kind, at least in Missouri. Sam Henson has also started a wrestling school, Bulltrained, that serves kids in the St. Louis and Mid-MO area. Sam's most notable pupil for the time being is his son, Wyatt, who will attend Iowa next fall. Thoroughbred Wrestling Academy, ran by former MU wrestler Marcus Hohen, is also worth mentioning. MU does have a great deal of depth for the foreseeable future. Looking forward to watching the Tigers next year!

Wrestling Shirt a Day in May

Here’s an interview he did with Intermat - Interesting tidbit from this one, he said the president of Gardner Webb University even reached out. Speaking of Gardner-Webb, they just crushed their fundraising goals and raised over $72k in a day, over double the next highest team.

They definitely need to send 65kg Yazdani somewhere, even if it's at 70kg so he doesn't have to cut weight. He needs experience. And I would have sent Goleij and hoped that in losing to Sadulaev he makes him tired, then Karimi and Shabani make him more tired. Then finally Mohammadian beats him and gets a lot of confidence for the Olympics, lol. And obviously that could have all gone wrong and he might have got our other wrestlers tired before wrestling Sadulaev.

We have shown that we can be competitive at younger levels in Greco and he's obviously one of our elites, so I really do expect a medal. Freestyle though...I feel like he'll need a good draw but not based on a ton, like you said at OTTs we just saw him get run through and at the last chance qualifier he looked fairly average (obviously it was seniors). If I need to know anything about wrestling or sports, I ask Frank Rizzo because he knows more than me.

    Ben Provisor 2x Olympian signs!

Last night Ben said that folkstyle will help him stay in shape as he continues training Greco and that he wants to wrestle in the 2028 Olympics in LA. The degree will help him with high-level coaching opportunities.

I bet Provisor sticks with the program for the full run (unless he transfers to a D1,D2, or D3 school). Got to figure a guy going back to school at 30 is going for a degree, not wrestling glory (which he got from repping the USA in the Olympics).

Making forfeits worth more points will not help anything at all. It would be better to invest in education of coaches on retention and recruitment of athletes than punishing them for not being good at either of those.

It's not that cut and dried. Bekbulatov would be one of the medal favorites in Tokyo and JO has a 50-50 shot of facing him before reaching the final in the strict random system this week. On the other hand, there are 3 basically automatic wins he could face in the 16-man bracket in Tokyo. If he draws one of them, he literally only has to win one other match to be automatically in a bronze match.

Yazdani is obviously set at 86, nothing will remove him for Tokyo unless he gets hurt. Atri is also set, he beat Sarlak a few months ago and he beat Amouzad, basically sending him back to juniors where is currently the 61kg backup. When Amouzad's name was on the list for the junior training camp in Hamedan you can be sure it is 100% over. Other than that I think they can also send Yazdani at 65 without much controversy. Won the world team trials for the worlds that got cancelled, has beaten Ghiasi, and qualified the weight. Is it set? I'm not sure but I think 65 can be set and nobody can complain. What would Ghiasi say? That he broke Otoguro's fingers so he should go to the Olympics? lol. I don't think the other 3 are really set. I assume they will wrestle internationally. They can't just put Taheri aside as much as i'm sure they want to, look how much controversy was raised when they wanted Zare to wrestle at the Asian championships. As Irani said all he has done recently is have 3 terrible matches with Taheri. Taheri getting pinned gives Zare a stronger case but he probably needs to actually beat him or place above him somewhere. 74 is difficult. Emami qualified the weight, they both won trials recently but not the same trials. Emami is improving, Hosseinkhani will never improve. I am not sure what they will do here. Do they give it to Emami because Hosseinkhani lost in the finals of Asians? Emami lost to that guy as well in 2019 but at least he got robbed. This is the hardest weight to predict in my opinion in terms of what the coaches will do. The problem is these two have never wrestled each other for the coaches to just decide Emami is going to the Olympics right now. 97 will have to go to a tournament. Maybe they even involve Goleij and Karimi.
