It kills me to feel a vibe on here that JO owes US wrestling fans something for this result. Having been a part of someone else's journey to an Olympic spot, previously, I have always felt that there could be room for criticism for athletes who show a lack of dedication around preparation for an event like this (I don't think that's the case here with JO) but any disappointment in their actual performance is FOR them and not WITH them. From my spot on the couch, JO doesn't owe anyone of us anything regarding his performance. He went on the mat looking to do the best he could to achieve his dream to wrestle in the Olympics and came up short. No doubt he has disappointment, and will second guess what he did, but he doesn't owe me anything. I feel terrible for him.

Was Oliver Injured and, if so ...?

I think most all have a good idea of the what and why but sure its possible KJ was suppose to give him a morning wake up call and still had his watch/alarm set to CST.

Watching the match yesterday it occurred to me that I was watching a guy with flashes of brilliance vs. a guy that just knows how to win. I would rather watch the flashes of brilliance guy wrestle 10 out of 10 times, but if I had to put down money, I know which way I'm going. I feel bad for Oliver. To be so close to a life-long dream must be gut wrenching. I'm sure he's beating himself up way worse than a bunch of keyboard warriors ever could.

There have been flip-flops. But that's not because Fauci et al are not experts. It's because this is a new disease and the scientist are learning more about it over time. As the knowledge changes, the advice changes. That's called learning. It's not a bad thing. That said, I think that some of the advice is political in the sense that they want everyone to take precautions regardless of the level of risk. A health 25 year-old might take a chance at going unmasked indoors and either not get the virus or get it but with lesser symptoms. But they want everyone to mask up to reduce the overall risk and to send the message that we all have stake in this. This idea is also sensible, but its anathema to folks who think they need only care about themselves.

"A guy that just knows how to win" 100%.... As Americans (myself included) sometimes we really over-value optics, when results are all that matters. Gadz was never going to score 10pts but he also never has to. He holds center and has superior defense. The one that always comes to mind for me is Kamal Bey, when he was setting the world on fire I was like "Wait until he hits seniors and he has no defense and those guys who do, just beat him 1-0 because that high flying ish we love so much just isn't how you win long term" Dake, Cox, JB (To a degree), Snyder... have all really leaned into an international style, where they don't need to score 10 to win each match. I would say JO started to adopt that style, in that he stopped scoring 8 in the first minute before dying and losing based on gas-tank.....but I think he took it a little far, waited a little too long... if he comes out attacking in the 2nd and stays on him, I think he wins that match, but waiting until there is 40 seconds left, needing 2 takedowns against a top level opponent... tall order. Hopefully he comes back and continues to grow. I'm disappointed but still a JO fan

I am a proud American, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with the way USA Wrestling selects our reps for Worlds and the Olympics. If we had a selection process by committee (with wrestle-offs, results from national championships, international competitions, and past Worlds/Olympics all playing a factor) like Russia, I think we would have better results at World and the Olympics than we do presently. I think having one Trials tournament determine our rep for the Olympics is not the best way to pick our Olympic teams.

67douche---You need a refund from that community college if you define the run JO just went on in OTTs and Last Chance, all trying to clean up the mess lame-zain left the rest of the field a choke. I do notice you like to use that word; I suspect it is driven by the amount of time you spend choking your own chiken.

I know a lot of people will be upset about him not weighing in (and I get it, it’s a pretty much a “take my ball and go home” act from him), but holy cow what a career JO has had in hindsight. The guy went a combined 0-4 at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic qualifiers. Missed almost 2 full years of competition with the failed drug test. Right there he could have hung up his shoes and been justified. But, he came back as the best international version of himself. He wiped the floor with US guys at senior nationals with a perfect 50-0 run (beating McKenna worse than I’ve ever seen him get tossed around). Then goes through a gauntlet at the 2021 Olympic trials. Beats his old training buddy (and rising international star) Yianni on criteria. I can’t even imagine the feeling for him after he won that tournament. And then gets a tough draw at the last chance qualifier and comes up one match short against world class wrestlers. I also cannot imagine that feeling. I hate the result. I really dislike him not finishing the tournament tomorrow. But damn JO, what a ride it’s been to get to this moment. Edit to say: not only did he come up 1 match short. He came up 1 point short on a shot clock violation in a match where he scored the only takedown. I get it though, he should’ve been more offensive earlier in the match, shouldn’t have given up easy step outs, etc, etc. But there isn’t a person on this board that hasn’t lost a heartbreaking match at some level where you could have done just a little bit more. We all know that feeling. I’d encourage everyone to give JO a little leeway. He represented himself and USA wrestling well today and came up ever so short. I’ll probably never meet the guy, but I’m proud of him and I hope other USA wrestling fans are as well.

Bormet has been instrumental in much of USA’s recent success across the board. Clubs, RTCs, focus on international styles, focus at the kids club grass roots level, etc. I hope that he leads USAW one day because he has done an amazing job at every avenue of his career and he’s a good guy on top of it all.

It was both. It's ridiculous that he essentially had to serve two years suspension on that and during that the rules were changed so he wouldn't have actually been suspended for what he was suspended for.

The problem with what you’re saying is that, at this point, the word “expert” is fundamentally broken, and any authority previously lent with same is largely to completely gone. This is the case with many superlatives in the English language at this point.

Wow, a lot of people commenting in here as if they know exactly what is going on, even to the point of telling us what should have gone on and what they need to do to fix it, when the reality is no one in here has the first clue what's going on. You can't make this up, great stuff!

You have to give it to the guy for taking years of criticism of his match style and then successfully reinventing his entire match strategy at 31 years old. Didn't get the job done yesterday but overall I think it has been implemented very well. He did exactly what his haters asked him to do, so it would be grossly unfair to then fault him for executing the hater's strategy to a T.

Nah, translation: it’s like godd*mn iowa vs oklahoma state out there, but for everything. Some people only believe what their brands brothers and gable say, some people only believe what their john smith says, neither of them trusts the ref cause they think he blew calls and is a homer for the other side. And really, all coverage for either side does is talk about how bad the other coaches’ behavior and the officiating are. (No bs actually, have you seen ESPN recently?) Maybe it sells better tickets for the coverage to be full of shameless clowns, but most of the world just wants to sit down and watch the proverbial wrestling. Real important for us all to remember that.

    Iran Wrestling News

I just posted it because I didn't realise he wrestled Tavanyan who is now causing trouble for everyone at 65kg way back then, I think Tevanyan was in his weight when Maghsoudi won junior worlds also. His run to cadet world gold that year was one of the craziest I have seen in wrestling, every single match was a mess. He won the gold but if they wrestled the tournament again he easily could have come 20th. Go back and watch it if you want some entertainment.

Not weighing in is incredibly shortsighted IMO. We have seen guys get a last minute entry because they were first man out. This pretty much eliminates the changes of that happening for Oliver does it not?

Engel is a great recruiter and just getting started. As posted above, they got two good ones in '22 already. I think he got some good rough prospects in this class, specifically Stephens who had a good Coralville. I agree this class isn't game changing (and won't be a top 25 class) but they're on the right path imo.

Yup, but what you are implying is that people should inherently trust the same people you do...which ultimately comes down to a matter of viewpoint and opinion. Who you choose to trust and why you do so is inherently a product of your experience, which is valuable to and for you. It is however, rather arrogant and lacking in empathy to angrily foist your experience on others, without taking the time to allow for the fact that they have in fact lived a different life than you, and may have navigated the landscape of life differently. Getting mad at someone for the fact that they don’t see your authority figure as an authority figure is pretty fantastically egotistical.

Couple problems with that statement. 1) He earned the right by winning. Not by mere selection. 2) We have had a process for our olympic team that squares solely on winning the matches, and none on votes in a conference room, since way before there were any Olympic trials on NBC. So that doesn't hold any water either. Sorry.

Maybe, but you're being overly negative on the team to try to make your point. It's certainly possible that Dake and Taylor are our only medalists, but I find it unlikely. Snyder has never not medaled, I don't believe, and Taylor and Dake are likely the favorites at their respective weights. Taylor has nuked the world and Dake's style is going to be a completely ifferent animal for US opponents at 74 kg. Additionally, Gable just demolished a world medalist level wrestler in Gwiz and is a next level kind of athlete. I don't know if he's going to be either Akgul or Geno, but I'd be shocked if he didn't medal.
