    Olympic seeding

Going into the Games, Snyder will be the only American seeded: #2, with Sharifov at 3. We all know draw can play a big part in American medal count, and looking at list of athletes in each weight that will be drawn in, but probably top 4 in their weight, we're probably going to have some tough roads. How will these brackets turn out...who on our squad needs a good draw to medal...who just needs to do their thing to medal?? Below are the top four at each weight: My first thought is, Miccic really did himself some favors. *Note, this is assuming all of these athletes qualified. I could not find a final list of qualifiers. For example, JB was #4 in the points. 57: 1 Uguev-RUS; 2 Atli-TUR; 3 Miccic-SRB; 4 Ravi-IND. I like Gilman to medal here. Not really sure why, just do. I think for one I really believe in what those guys at NLWC do and think the additions to his aresenal are going to get him through. Dream spot in the Miccic quarters. I think it's real dangerous to draw into Atli's quarter. 65: 1 Rashidov-RUS; 2 Bajrang-IND; Niyazbekov-KAZ; 4 Muszukajev-HUN Damnit Yianni 74: 1 Chamizo-ITA; 2 Sidakov-RUS; 3 Kaisonov-KAZ; 4 Kuramagamedov-HUN I think if Dake does his thing he wins it. He's beaten Chamizo and I think having wrestled him before he will do even better next time. I like how he matches up with Sidakov. I think Dake in top form is Gold 86: 1 Yazdani-IRI; 2 Punia-IND; 3 Naifonov-RUS; 4 Amine-SMR Comes down to Yazdani and Taylor, if both in top form. But both have had injuries and layoffs since their last world gold. That is a monkey wrench. 97: 1 Sadulaev-RUS; 2 Snyder-USA; 3 Sharifov-AZE; 4 Nurov-MKD. Sad and Snyder. I like Snyder over Sharifov. I don't like Snyder over Sad. 125: 1 Petriashvilli-GEO; 2 Akgul-TUR; 3 Khotsyanivskyi UKR; 4 Magomedov-AZE A friend of mine has been real real high on Gable for awhile. I have kept telling him that he may be the best guy in America, but he has a ways to go to get to level of the big two. After watching him just practice around with Gwiz three straight times....man, I don't know. Maybe he is the bad draw. I think Top Gable medals for sure, and just maybe shocks me. I'm usually very very skeptical of the pre-Olympic homer hype. Looking at each weight individually, I really like our chances to medal at each weight. And at each weight we've had a finalist this cycle, except for the double bronze at heavy. But we just can't medal at each weight right? EDIT: to add my thoughts at each American weight

It is the politics of envy. If these people thought about the issue realistically they'd realize that the money owned by billionaires will eventually be redistributed thru out the economy one way or the other regardless of any and all attempts to stop it on the part of the billionaires themselves. Look at the families with the most wealth 200 years ago. They were for the most part not the families with the most wealth 100 years ago, which in turn are not the families with the most wealth today. The people that make all the great decisions/innovations that lead to wealth in the first place die off and their heirs, for the most part, are not nearly as efficient with capital. They mostly tend to consume the wealth. In any case governments tax most of the wealth one way or the other, so it mainly comes back into circulation. It just takes some time. Sure we can all name a few families that are better at passing along multi generational wealth, but even those dynasties will one day end. In the meantime, their wealth will in turn enrich others in far greater numbers than government ever will. If government, as in any government, were better at wealth creation than free markets then every communist/heavily socialist country on earth would be rich. But they aren't, and people flee those countries in large numbers to come here to the USA. This too will end if we go down the same policy paths those other countries went down. As Winston Churchill once said in a 1948 speech to the House of Commons "Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it".

For one, he probably saved Missouri wrestling at the D1 level. As bad as the program was prior to him getting there, Title IX, and the move to the SEC, the program most likely would have been dropped long ago. The byproduct would have been a reduction and deterioration of youth and high school wrestling numbers and talent. Name a state with elite pre-college talent and a non-succesful D1 program. Second, he created one of the most dynamic summmer camps that was a competition/team camp. This gave kids and coaches a chance to learn the eveolvoing techniques and improved wrestling skills. These camps provided opportunity for off season wrestling that kids would not have attended otherwise. You. Basically had Iowa or OSU before that and not every kid in the state had good proximity to that. He began to have pre-season coaching clinics. He brought high school coaches in and taught technique. At the time technique was lacking in the state. There was not a huge pool of experienced coaches in the state (outside if KC and STL). Many coaches got a direction and were able to expand their wrestling knowledge. This gets passed to the kids. He talked to and listened to coaches. A few of us old timers can remember prior to Smith nobody could travel outside the state 100 miles, the match number per year was all, kids couldn't wresltnf in tournaments with excessive numbers of teams, and the off-season rules were rivaled only by Michigan. The officating was also not very good in terms of interpretation. You couldn't be behind a guy for more than five seconds or you would get stalled out if a match. As a result nobody had to get very good in bottom. mOnkids got tortured on the mat. Smith worked with officials and he also worked with MSHSA to help improve those areas. Especially, with traveling, match, numbers, and off-season. While it did take the HS coaches association to get those changes made it never would have happened had Smith not been there with support and a sting college program. Those are just a few things that he has been instrumental in helping to get changed. As for youth. Outlet was not the first. Randy Smith was ahead of everyone back when he fed Oak Park with Mahab. Since then there have been a lot of great programs. Including Purler. The only argument I would make is that is counts are not complete accurate. While he has MANY kids that are primarily this that he helped develop, he also counts kids that he worked with in a very limited basis that trained with other coaches. That is not saying he is not good and has not produced great wrestlers. I just know that If a kid trained with him for just a few weeks or a few days a week for a month or two he would count them as "Purler trained". I don't know Randy Smith all that well but I dobknow he had the first elite youth program. His kids tortured everyone back in the 90's.

That link is on the Pfizer vaccine, but both are practically identical in efficacy, so it would apply to both. It was many things. The idea of targeting the spike protein is due to years of research on other coronaviruses. mRNA gene delivery technology was developed in an academic lab over the past 20 years. The mRNA companies Moderna and Biontech started about 10 years ago to use that tech to treat cancer. Then, in part due to Darpa, there was a big push to apply gene delivery tech to develop a vaccine that can be rapidly deployed in the case of a pandemic. It was incredible foresight on their part and one of the best investments the government has ever made. https://www.biocentury.com/article/304691/darpa-s-gambles-might-have-created-the-best-hopes-for-stopping-covid-19

I've bitten my tongue (fingers) so far because every thread with any mention of COVID turns into a dumpster fire that a lava-spouting volcano would envy. In the interest of civil discussion, I want to point out that every virus is different, so you cannot deduce much about vaccine-induced immunity versus immunity due to infection for COVID from what happened with another virus like Spanish flu. Also, importantly, not all vaccines are the same. The premise that a 100 year old lady developed long-lasting immunity to Spanish flu from natural infection, ergo, natural immunity is as good or better than a vaccine for COVID is not logically sound. For some viruses, yes, for others, no. In the interest of speed, the current COVID vaccines were specifically targeted to the virus's spike proteins. When you get the vaccine, you make antibodies against the virus's spike proteins. Not targeting other viral proteins was a major risk, but it paid off handsomely and is the reason why we are reopening at a good pace. What is rarely discussed outside research circles is how incredibly effective the vaccines are even as the virus mutates into many variants. We have to get vaccines for another virus, the flu, every year because the flu mutates in ways that escape prior vaccines. So far, not so for COVID. Ironically, while the spike proteins that the vaccines target can change, the parts of the virus that the T cells we also make after getting vaccinated can recognize and then neutralize do not change in COVID variants. On a related note, at the risk of setting off another COVID shtbomb here, the reason the scientific community is quick to lambaste antivaxxer fake news is that there is no guarantee this continues forever. It has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with science. Antivaxxer sentiment is the only thing standing between us and herd immunity right now. There are plenty of vaccines to go around now, and I expect children of all ages to have vaccines approved for them before the next school year starts.

First off, wasn't trying to get you all riled up and I am refusing to let you get me all hot under the collar by accusing me of doing anything than truly expressing my opinion on the subject and asking honest questions...even if you don't like them. :) Well I sure ain't going to call anyone a softy for wanting to wear a mask...my mom told me she was going to even if the mandates went away...it is her right to wear one and I respect it. I get wanting to encourage people to get vaccinated that makes sense. But just as you don't want to be rediculed for wearing a mask, should people that hold different believes than you and chose not to get vaccinated shouldn't get rediculed. Maybe they have personal or religious believes against it...point being is who get's to choose what is okay to bash and what isn't? Again, if you are vaccinated why would it bother you so bad, if someone else doesn't? Because people that don't would create super transmission sites?? You do realize that there have been MANY MANY indoor events held where people didn't wear masks and there wasn't some big massive spread from it? And before you say it...you can't use the "you have no idea and are saying that because it fits your preference". Just as you can say I have no idea...I can say neither do you. You using one "study" that tried to correlate school openings to massive community spread is as far reaching to meet your preference as are the countless first hand examples of where schools have been open with minimal restrictions and there wasn't any uptick in community spread...or does those not count because there wasn't a white paper written about it and put in the New York Times??

The issue I have is people aren't gracious in letting others know the original meaning that has gotten lost over time so that someone can be educated. If I'm inflicting pain on someone, I want to know about it so I can stop. But people aren't automatically idiots for not realizing that "calling a spade a spade" or "hoodwinked" or "uppity" started out with dehumanizing meanings. When I do realize it, I stop using them. I chose to get vaccinated even after having Covid, but curious...why is it if the fringe/those on the extreme end of the spectrum choose to not get vaccinated it is looked down upon so heavily (not talking about the anti-vax groups either)?? If enough people get the vaccine and/or already got the virus and built up immunity to it, what does it matter if the fringe/small number of people chose not to get the vax (which should be their right)? If the majority of the high risk folks are vaccinated does it really matter if some chose not to get vaccinated? In theory if you are vaccinated you shouldn't have to much to worry about right??

Those billionaires are not "hoarding wealth" as you call it. There are only so many things they can do with capital. 1. Re invest it. This employs people. 2. Pay taxes. This redistributes it to other people. 3. Put it in the bank. This causes the bank to lend it out to other people who put it to good use buying homes, automobiles, starting busionesses which employ people, and using it to pay for things like college tuition. 4. Give it away. Billionaires could also theoretically put it under a mattress but I doubt any of them do so. In the end, the Federal Gov't. levies a death tax which currently stands at 40 percent after an exclusion amount. State governments also levy "inheritance taxes" or "estate taxes". The combined numbers can get pretty high. Here is how it works in New York. https://smartasset.com/estate-planning/new-york-estate-tax Here is the bottom line for me. I don't know any billionaires. Not personally, anyway. But I don't want to discourage success because it is bad policy. I want more success because it leads to more jobs, more growth, more innovation. Less success gets less of everything else a society wants and needs. See my comment about good policy above. The economy under the man you hate created the lowest unemployment rates across the board, the lowest poverty rate since we started keeping track of this stat in 1959, and the highest median income on record. I expect this last number to be eclipsed if only because of the seemingly never ending money supply. And your comment about birth rates is funny. Birth rates have fallen all over the world for decades. From 1950 to 1978 in the US they fell from 24.87 per 1000 people to 14.76 per 1000 people. In the 43 years from 1978 thru 2021 they fell to 12 births for each 1000 people. So prior generations, we can call this the not your generation, saw a drop of more than 10 births for each 1000 people over 28 years. In more recent times that drop has been only 2.76 births per 1000 people. https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/USA/united-states/birth-rate Also, the places with the highest birth rates I am confident I can illustrate many of those peoples earn far less than you do. For example, Venezuela has a current birth rate of about 17.5 births per thousand and that is occurring despite incredible turmoil there. Venezuelans would love to be in your economic position right now. If you are not starting a family that is a choice of yours, but others facing much more difficult circumstances than you are starting families.

Can you name a respiratory virus where you don’t get long lasting immunity without mutational drift of the virus? Blood borne pathogens have tricky ways of reinfection, but I’m fairly certain that the reason we keep getting colds and flus every year is due to mutational drift of multiple strains. Meaning, you still retain memory cells and some immunity many years later, but the virus you encounter is different. That is why if the exact same variant of Covid appears 50 years from now, I would expect those still alive from this time to have partial immunity. The same thing happened with swine flu, where the reason it wasn’t as deadly as expected is due to its similarity to a flu decades earlier.

I don't blame the Serb or Alizadeh for the match, unfortunately these are the rules and both knew it would be a tough match and what is at stake hence how they approach the match. It is more of a reflection of the need for rules change rather than both of those guys. Disagree however that sending him was a mistake. Nouri messed up and someone else deserved a chance and Alizadeh deserved it and had a great showing, he has a higher ceiling than Nouri and probably beats him now tbh. Can't really fault him. He just beat the Rio Gold olympic champ in Russia for Bronze. So well done to him.

I mean . . . kinda?? I'm otherwise supposed to believe that he was the only wrestler to miss weigh ins for something as important as the Olympic Trials? Not only that, but he showed up overweight for a weight class 11 lbs heavier that he has wrestled before with a full 39 minutes until scales closed and couldn't get the weight off? That's just as unbelievable IMO. The next day he was shaking hands, kissing babies and giving away a bunch of free gear to fans, his face indicative of a heavy (pun completely intended) burden being lifted. It's only a theory (one of many), but I don't think it's as far out there as you think.

It kills me to feel a vibe on here that JO owes US wrestling fans something for this result. Having been a part of someone else's journey to an Olympic spot, previously, I have always felt that there could be room for criticism for athletes who show a lack of dedication around preparation for an event like this (I don't think that's the case here with JO) but any disappointment in their actual performance is FOR them and not WITH them. From my spot on the couch, JO doesn't owe anyone of us anything regarding his performance. He went on the mat looking to do the best he could to achieve his dream to wrestle in the Olympics and came up short. No doubt he has disappointment, and will second guess what he did, but he doesn't owe me anything. I feel terrible for him.

Flo not paying women from Captains Cup?

You know all of this - or you divined it from a tweet? I too can work the Bold key. Maybe you are right and Flo is screwing them, although Haley nor Maya were competitors so neither could have reached out to Flo to ask what was up with their pay. The inside knowledge may be light on this one. Maybe Flo is having a cash Flo crisis and needs a little more time? Maybe the wrestlers didn't properly fill out the documentation? Maybe terms of service are 90 days? I don't know and neither, I expect, do you. Lots of maybes there. I want everyone to get paid and for Flo to make money so they can have more events. What is not a maybe is that heading to social media to castigate your payor (again neither of these people are payees from what it seems although Felicity Taylor did like the tweet so it may lend credence or it may be that she is of the College group that might not be getting compensated - I have no idea) is not a professional approach. To say they have sexist behavior tattooed across their forehead is a bridge too far and a childish comment. Do you really think that some people don't use tweeting / twitter as their first place to spout nonsense? Here's a link: https://twitter.com/home You can figuratively bathe in the ignorance. I've had no issues with Flo. I pay, login, and watch wrestling. I'm unaware of any shady business dealings albeit I am not too invested so perhaps there are. I didn't see a bunch of other groups putting on Women's events and employing 40+ people, nor covering women's wrestling so it seems like bite the hand behavior. I'd quietly strike anyone from my partner list who slandered my firm in this manner. Everyone feels like Twitter gives you a voice. That sound you hear is an echo. Social media just puts a mark on your forehead of who not to deal with. No one hiring goes to Twitter or Facebook or the myriad other cesspools looking for positives. You do the searches to weed out the problem children.
