    2022 Finals Detroit

If you attend and you like dive bars, hit Nancy Whiskey and the Old Miami (a bar started by Vietnam vets that takes its name from Missing In Action Michigan--still has the same old crusty couches to sit on from the war era). You'll need to shower after going but you'll love it. The Bronx Bar used to be a true dive but new owners have jazzed it up a bit--Newcastle on draft is very cold. And Secretary Hamilton, you've got one shot. If you go, I'll be hosting guests from Connecticut and between one set of sessions we'll be hitting the Polish Village Cafe in Hamtramck for real Polish soul food--the first draft Okocim will be on me. Time (and sobriety) permitting, we'll hit Suzy's, the Whiskey in the Jar, and maybe Trixie's. Hit me up with a message as we get closer and I'll know more about our schedule. And outsiders should keep in mind there are numerous old school places that don't take credit cards--cash only. Stress, the Q-Line is still shut down as of last week--went to a Tiger game and wanted to hit Z's Villa and leave my car there but the Q was still out of service. Should be up and running well before tournament time. And trolls, please, stay home in suburbia, tug at the nipple on your Mich Ultra and watch at Chili's on ESPN the Ocho as you dribble plastic cheese sauce on your polo shirt while munching your extreme nachos. Leaves more good tickets and parking spots and shorter lines at the bar for the rest of us.

Sorry you had a bad experience, and you had plenty of company who basically said the same thing. I was still living in Michigan at the time, so it wasn't bad for me, but certainly not a great way to sell the area. 2022 should be better however. Downtown Detroit isn't terribly complicated. In the above diagram, you can see Little Caesars Arena that I have highlighted in pink. Probably the easiest ways for the typical NCAA wrestling fan pedestrian to get around is by taking the QLine (thick blue line), basically a streetcar which runs straight down Woodward Avenue, and the People Mover (black line) which loops around all the major parts of downtown including Greektown and Bricktown. A lot of the hotels, restaurants and nightspots are situated in the vicinity of the People Mover, so fans will probably benefit. I'm not sure if they've reopened it yet (shut down during COVID), but it will almost certainly be back up by next year. Just a little preview for next year. Hopefully we'll do a better job of helping the out-of-town fan.

    2022 Finals Detroit

Detroit is like any other big city. The venue for the tournament is downtown and it will be very safe; as the IronChef pointed out, stay home if you were terrified of being in St. Louis, but show up if you want to see a great meet in a helluva fun city. Detroit is a true melting pot that has preserved the cultures that have flocked to it and you can find any authentic food and drink here: Mexicantown, Chaldeantown, Dearborn (Arabic), Hamtramck (Polish), Greektown, Corktown (Irish), the list goes on. Like any big city, know where you're going and you'll be fine and have a great time. You want awesome dive bars, the place in unequalled. (Upscale too but that's not my taste and I'm not the guy to recommend anything in that category.) I'm sure I'll be acting as tour guide for many old friends that week and I have zero worry about guaranteeing a good time to everyone in my posse.

Inspired by the US only predictions, I thought we would expand it a bit with the Olympics coming up pretty soon and see who folks reckon will be the Gold medallist for the 6 weights. I'll kick off: 57kg-Uguev 65kg-Rashidov 74kg-Dake 86kg-Yazdani 97kg-Mohammadian (going with the massive upset) 125kg-Akgul

To be clear, Detroit and Downtown Detroit should be 2 DIFFERENT cities. This is especially true for Visitors that don't wander. J gives a lot of great info about Downtown and some of the VERY small pockets of different ethnic food/drink locations. However, Hamtramck(not much safer than Detroit) is BARELY Polish anymore and is ABSOLUTELY not Polish Centric. The last time I went there at night I had the pleasure of running from someone with an automatic weapon clearing the establishment with gunfire! Greektown is only surviving barely due to its proximity to the Casino. Mexican Village is basically 1 block. To travel SAFELY to these places you ABSOLUTELY require someone that knows their way around INTIMATELY. Now, if you stay STRICTLY Downtown via Sheer's map, you should be fine and have no worries. There is plenty to do and enough restaurants and bars that you should have a great time. But, if you want to do any of the other things, make sure you are with a very trusted local. Finally, STAY OUT OF Detroit Proper. There is NO REASON to go into the actual Urban areas of Detroit. I used to do a ton of work down there, but have slowly minimized my exposure. The crime is NOT overblown. The current racial climate and Covid have NOT helped WHATSOEVER.

It's about thousands of women getting shunted because a very small set of people have an obvious natural born advantage. Any decent D1 wrestler will be World Champ if they transition. The entire process would be too ugly to watch. Imagine Gilman taking on the Women's World Champion - No one wants to see that. I don't have the solution but I think this has the potential to hurt Women's sports.

57kg - Zaur Uguev, but Ravi Kumar is a dark horse. 65kg - Rashidov, but Tevanyan is a dark horse (assuming he will be wrestling for Armenia). 74kg - Zaurbek Sidakov, but it's a toss up between Sidakov and Dake. Sidakov has been wrestling tougher competition at 74kg whereas Dake has had almost all of his success at 79kg and had a very close match with Chamizo. 86kg - David Taylor. I watched the DT/Yazdani second match again the other day and changed my mind about this. DT is noticeably bigger and stronger than Yazdani. We put too much emphasis on the fact that Yazdani was able to take a 6-2 lead in the first period - that happens a lot with DT (both Kurugliev and Naifanov took big leads against him too). Yazdani seems to gas from being forced to wrestle at that intensity against a bigger guy like DT, against whom he really has to work hard to take down and he can't seem to handle DT's scrambles. The biggest variable is whether DT is 100% after his injuries, but if he is then I have to favour him to beat Yazdani again, unfortunately. 97kg - Abdulrashid Sadulaev. Mohammadian is a wild card and I expect Snyder to up his game. Sadulaev v Mohammadian is the bout we all want to see - I think that would be a conservative tactical match but Sadulaev is just too good at winning. 125kg - Taha Akgul, but Zare is a dark horse. Still have to think Akugl v Geno is still the most likely final, though.

I don't really disagree with your point (although I wouldn't go as far as saying its meaningless), but that's on the athlete, not the seeding. The seeding is as good as it gets, but the seeding cannot make an athlete compete at a tournament if they are unable or don't want to.

cornhole and other "sports" get on TV because they pay to get on TV and then the networks are able to sell ads during that time slot... if anyone expects USAW to spend their ridiculously limited budget on paying the ocho to condense an event into 22 minutes to get on TV for no one to really watch it past those of us who already tdo, then, trust me when i say, my bridge is awesome and i will make you a great deal on it...
  19. 1 point
This is true, but earning a seed is meaningless if the top guys don’t participate. DT being randomly drawn in means the seed Yazdani rightfully earned is meaningless. He doesn’t care who else he faces prior to the finals, besides DT.

The seeding criteria is incredibly simple and easy to follow especially for a global sport where matchups can have a huge impact. If you want a seed, compete at the seeding events and do well. If you don't want a seed, don't compete at the seeding events (which is what most of our top level athletes choose to do).

No one is trying to deny transgender woman the right to participate in sports. They should be able to participate against other people who were born as males. Participating against those who were born as females gives them way to much of a physical advantage vs the competition. This applies to track as much as to MMA although the danger to the opponent is not an issue. I expect that the advantaged they have exceeds that gained by naturally born women taking banned PEDs. It is certainly hard to quantify the level of advantage but in track you can see just how far down the best woman competitors are in terms of times vs the men. Many of the best high school boys and virtually all of the college men in any divisions will have better times than the most elite women competitors. There are many on the side of allowing transgender athletes to compete in this country do not want any limits similar to what the IOC is imposing. Their position is that people can compete as any gender they identify as with no limitations (as happened here in CT with the track State Champions noted in the article posted by Bucky Badger) One of the best known Transgender woman in this country today used to be an excellent male athlete in Track and Field. As great as Bruce Jenner was in 1976 I think she would admit that he would have had virtually zero chance to make the US Olympic team in any of the 10 individual events that make up the decathlon on the men's team. However had Bruce at that time been able to just identify as a woman and compete in the Olympics then she would have won every event that matches up directly - 100 m, 400 m, long jump, and high jump with the exception of the 1500 m (BJ's time was 7 seconds off the GM women's time) Jenner's javelin throw was also further than the GM women's throw despite him using a heavier javelin. I have no doubt that adjusting for the heavier weights used in discus and shot put she would have won those events also. The same could be said for the 100m Hurdle race for women (vs 110 m HH for men with higher hurdles.) The women didn't compete in Pole Vault at that time but it would take until after the 2000 Olympics for women to Pole Vault as high as Jenner did in 1976. Bottom line is if he had been allowed to "transition" just by identifying as female Jenner would have been favored to win 9 of 10 events at the Olympics and might have had a shot at making it 10 of 10. Those of us who watched his performance in Montreal remember he was coasting a bit in the 1500m as that was the last event and he had the Decathlon GM pretty much wrapped up. It is completely unfair to allow people born as males to compete in athletics against those born female.

Rby and Lee moving up ?

I’m sure RBY would do fine at 141. But it’d make no sense for the team unless 133 is a bad cut for him which I’ve heard it wasn’t. But they don’t have much else at 133 (especially next year with Howard seemingly out), and they’ve already got multiple young studs that could go 141 in Bartlett and Van Ness, although I guess technically both of them could still redshirt. If Steen does well at 125 though, wouldn’t be surprised to see RBY at 141 in 2022-23 with Howard at 133.

The pizza place? No, but we've got a Casey's Bar. And Pizzapapalis in Greektown, two inch thick pies and very cold beer. And Jet's if you want delivery--don't get no better. And if you come, you have to hit Lafayette Coney Island for an authentic Detroit Coney--steamed bun, natural casing dog, chopped raw onion, no-bean chili, and mustard. And keep in mind, Detroit is over 140 square miles in area; while its population has depleted (well over a million in its heyday to now about 700,000) it covers a lot of land. You will have to drive to hit the great pockets of bars/restaurants. If you park in the right spot, you can hit 5-6 great bars at a time. And if you have a hotel along Jefferson Avenue (overlooking the Detroit River), you'll have no problem finding whatever you're looking for. I think it's also important to note that "Detroit" has never hosted the NCAA; the debacle that was Auburn Hills was a bamboozle job by the NCAA. Auburn Hills is 34 miles from Detroit and The Palace, the former home of the Pistons, had always been a garbage location, isolated and "safe" for suburbanites but desolate and uninviting. It was recently put out of its misery and the team has moved back downtown. Saying that the NCAA was in Detroit when it was in Auburn Hills is akin to saying an event in Morton Grove is in "Chicago." Sorry, no it ain't. Honestly, it's not hard to have a damn good time in the D--lots of tradition, a city of speakeasies going back to Prohibition. If you are timid/believe everything you hear on cable news or your idea of a great bar is TGI Friday's, stay home. Find someone who knows the turf and you'll be fine. https://www.yelp.com/biz/caseys-bar-detroit

If we were talking about something happening in theory, I might agree with you. We are not talking about a conspiracy, there will actually be a biological male competing in the Olympics as a woman. This is the result of a relentless approach by a political minority and the majority afraid to challenge them because they might be canceled.

There needs to be a women's division, absolutely, never argued against it, but as it is now often administered it is idiotic. As mentioned before, case in point Caster Semenya, who won golds in Rio as a woman. She naturally produces high levels of testosterone; that's just the way the Great Maker created her and nothing she has done has altered that fact about her. The IAAF has now created what I consider arbitrary tests to eliminate her. Their solution? Semenya can take drugs that artificially reduce her natural testosterone levels if she wants to compete. It's bull. Future science will one day pull the blinders off how stupid this is, just as it did for Ewa Klobukoska. In no way should Klobukoska have been banned, and the "science" that was used at the time has now proven embarrassingly horrid. This "history" should in no way be forgotten or relegated as being obsolete or dangerous. We've done some really dumb, unconscionable things in the past and repeating those things albeit it in other forms is inexcusable. History and consideration of past eras should be a part of guiding our present thinking and be applied to help us avoid continued dumb decision making. Regarding males who transition to female, an unfair advantage (in accumulated muscle mass, etc.) is created in competitive sports, an unfairness that can be potentially dangerous, particularly in combat sports. This is why a third category can be created. We've been down a similar path with Oscar Pistorius, who competed with two prosthetic extensions on his legs. Now we have an entire para-Olympics to allow the athletic excellence of those who are "different" to shine. Has nothing to do with "wokeness" (damn, the whole world went to hell when everybody just up and decided to let those uppity women vote and own property) just adapting and growing as the science and objective facts become more clear and our sense of common humanity develops correspondingly.

Tests for hormone levels/testosterone are bunk. It leaves out things like bone structure, muscle mass etc which we all know favor biological males. This weight lifter is 43 years old and a medal contender in the weight class. You can’t tell me that because hormone levels are at the accepted level this is now fair. Plus, what about people that simply have higher/lower levels of testosterone than their gender average as mentioned earlier in the thread? Should we shift competition by grouping based on hormone levels? There is really no scientific basis for using hormones as the equalizer. It’s simply an attempt by the woke crowd to “scientifically” justify tearing down gender roles. We should all be terrified it has gotten this far….that radical politics is now in sports.
  47. 1 point
This is a very poor and seriously misguided analogy for many reasons. That aside, intellectually, the logical conclusion is to simply let everyone compete under one division, regardless of gender. Really, societally accepted/acknowledged/recognized gender was simply a convenient way to classify competitors, where the reasons for separation of competitors lies in hormone levels, muscle fiber presence, composition and distribution, bone density etc to name a few. Would you propose…testing and participation based on hormone levels (which I lol at, bc, well, olympics) and simply having people compete based on serum levels of particular anabolic/androgenic compounds? Also, while gender fluidity is absolutely a thing in many cultures and as a part of the human condition at large, what do you say to all the female athletes who want to continue competing in women’s sports? Worth noting I haven’t seen or heard of any stories of a transgender athlete assigned female at birth competing in men’s leagues and anybody making any hullabaloo about it. Why would that be? Your analogy aside, inclusion and acceptance of the uniqueness of every individual is very important interpersonally, it does not translate to the realm of athletics in their current form at all.

i understand the basis for the notion, but I think it is highly flawed. If that is the logic, then I think there are a lot of old school 3x champs who could and should be included as better college wrestlers than Dake. Lincoln McIlravy. Joe Williams. Ed Ruth. Bo Nickal. Pick a Schultz brother. Loads of 80’s iowa guys. If the losses don’t matter, then why should a particular loss at nationals matter more than those throughout the regular season?
