Cole gave one of my HS wrestlers his shoes after the team photos of the NCAA Champs his senior year..that was pretty cool of him!

You think that's going to narrow it down in a crowd of wrestlers? You may as well say "I'll be the 5'7 guy with bad hips in the slightly too-tight t-shirt"

Totally agree with what you are saying here. But have to add a couple things; we do see alot of guys that come in unknown, and medal right off the bat, and the evidence that its largely because they are unknown is that they don't medal again. (Brandon Eggum for example). The other thing is that I don't know Gable is unknown, being a Cadet World Champ, and then a Junior world Champ while still a Cadet. With video resources being what they are today, you can guarantee with his pedigree and the noise he has made over the past year, they will have the video running on him. I don't think he is going to fit into this unknown medalist category. If he wins, its because he is that good. Then again, to counter my counter......video is one thing, getting your hands on them is another. It's definitely extremely interesting going into the games.

Alberts is a true snake and POS person. Manning better watch his back or his program will be cut.
  9. 1 point
ESPN hit Alberts with a piece on Outside The Lines (article here but I cannot find the video URL anywhere). Unfortunately it appears that the damage was mitigated over the years of cutting the most successful program in the UNO athletics department, and it bears mentioning that the wrestling team was proven by FOIAs to 1) be self-sustaining, and 2) turning a profit of approximately $143k annually. I wish Mark Manning and his team the best, but from this point going forward I absolutely cannot root for anyone associated with Nebraska as long as Trev Alberts is an employee.

Two quick NIL points. 1. Iowa and Minnesota do not have NIL laws, so there is nothing legally (or via the NCAA) prohibiting athletes in Iowa and other states like them without a law from endorsing gambling, tobacco, alcohol, porn, etc. Other states are different, and schools can set their own rules. I was unable to find a list of prohibited industries for the Hawkeyes. Minnesota's policy does prohibit certain industries like sports gambling. 2. It's an open question as to whether or not Barstool Sports is a gambling company, and each school will make their own determination.

Yeah, it's less than a mile to the arena from the Westin. A great thing about the Westin, you're right across the street to Lafayette Coney Island!

Lewis stuck Burley in one of the All Star matches. A lot of folks these days don't appreciate Lewis' genius on the mat.

They need to change their recruits and get back on the police blotter if they REALLY, REALLY want to get back to their former status. Maybe bring back Richie Incognito for some seminars.

Not only did he eliminate UNO wrestling, he called Coach Denney they night they won their third consecutive D2 team title and broke the news to him that way.

This made me think of two others that had the same attributes, Stieber-Oliver and IMar-Cenzo. Those matches are remembered mainly for their stunning endings, but the first 6:59 of the Stieber match and the first 5:24 of the Cenzo match should be put on the same quality shelf discussed above with IMar-Nolf. Multi-time champs head to head. Action from literally the first second to the last. Lots of interesting ties. Extraordinarily high level technique because each guy knew that's the only way he could beat the other guy.. Several different types of pass-bys for takedowns. Sparkling stuff.

Maybe it's recency bias, but Shane Griffith winning this year has to be up there. There were three prongs to saving Stanford wrestling: institutional re-support, outside financial support, and quality wrestling results. I am absolutely of the opinion that if Griffith did anything less than bring home the ship while rocking the iconic "Keep Stanford Wrestling" hoodie then it would not have happened. So while the wrestling in the match itself was rather instantly forgettable, the implications of the match and the pressure on Griffith's shoulders vault it to the top of any list.

    Ruth to Illinois

How do you know Futrell wasn’t a candidate? He was just hired on in some capacity at Penn so maybe he leveraged an Illinois offer into that? Not everyone wants to come ‘home’ especially when that ‘home’ is Champaign and not actually home. They seem to have a good thing going at Penn and with Burroughs coming into the fold is the Illinois 2nd assistant job really better than staying at Penn? As far as training partners goes… Penn >>> Illinois right now.

    Ruth to Illinois

I think a lot are missing the forest for the trees here. This is Ed freaking Ruth we are talking about. He was a generational talent with a wrestling style that everyone loved. Getting a guy with his pedigree at a college like Illinois is a huge win for the program.

    0 for 40 - uh oh!

Dake’s fantasy record vs Taylor when they retire?
  27. 1 point
I literally already said “[Kemp] was absurdly good, and would have been right there with JB if he had been able to benefit from more advanced training methods, technique, etc.”
  28. 1 point
It was the most advanced technique at the time...thus, what is your point? You don't think a Lee Kemp training right now wouldn't be using the most up to date advanced technique?? He would 100% be right there with the JB's, Dake's, etc. if he was the same age as they are today. Same with Schultz. Same with Monday. That is why these arguments are so silly sometimes...some people have no ability to put things into context. Clearly a Lee Kemp from the 1970's/80's is not going to beat a JB in 2016. If they had access to the same training and techniques, that is a WHOLE different story. Not saying JB still wouldn't win, he just may, as I think statistically he may be the GOAT (even though in my heart Dave Schultz is), but Lee Kemp would absolutely be right there with JB.
  29. 1 point
It is understandable to have a bias to recent athletes, but trust me when I say this, and I really like Burroughs, Kemp would beat him 6 or 7 out of 10.
  30. 1 point
Kemp's technique was so rock solid, he didn't use advanced technique, even for the era he competed in. He might have been the best ever at keeping position and executing basic offensive moves.
