You think of a lot of things that can happen at a tournament. That is not one of them. I think he's been in control for so many matches for so many years he didn't know how to handle one mistake and just kept compounding them.

Isn't anyone going to give Kadimagomedov credit? He clearly scouted Dake and how to best counter the body lock, he even did a great job getting the extra 2 for exposure

As a non-American, JB is one of my favourite wrestlers of all time. A class act and true champion in everything he does.

    Dake vs Chamizo for Bronze

I'm really hoping we get to see this. A Bronze would speak volumes of Dake's mental toughness - to come back from something that embarrassing.

    Taylor Olympic GOLD medal match

Of course these guys are incredible wrestlers and can do things most humans could never think of doing. That said, after all of the subtle back-and-forth in the match, I was surprised to see that DT got the takedown with Yazdani caught on his heels with a straight shot double leg right to his butt. Nothing super fancy; nothing incredibly awe-inspiring; just a textbook double leg to the opponent's butt. Its simplicity was a thing of beauty.

    Taylor Olympic GOLD medal match

Yaz working new strategy. Reserving energy. Taylor fires, backs out. Yaz driving in, Taylor grounded. Point to iran for what? and caution. Ugh. 2-0 Yaz. Now Taylor with high crotch TD! 2-2. Taylor winning. Damn, underhook drive out. Yaz up 3-2. Taylor not winning the pushing battles. 1:30 left. Yaz pushes Taylor to edge again. Taylor drops to knees. Now both to feet in middle. 1 min left. Come on David. David reaches, no. Uh oh. No good set ups here. Taylor reaching. Needs better shot. Yaz blocking off. Taylor trying to put combos together but getting stuck underneath. 22 seconds. TD Taylor!! Double and drove through!! Wow!!! 4-3!!! TAYLOR WINS GOLD!!!!

On a positive note, a Native American won a WorldTour cycling road race in Spain recently. Neilson Powless. Also became the first Native American to ride in the Tour de France last year. https://www.cyclingnews.com/races/clasica-ciclista-san-sebastian-2021/elite-men/results/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Dake - What was wrong with him?

Dake has lost big on occasion. Even if you take away the two losses by tech to JB, you still have: 2013 -- 1-7 loss to Gadzhiev 2016 -- 1-9 loss to Mahamedau (at 86kg) 2016 -- 1-8 loss to Cox (at 86kg) 2018 -- 1-8 loss to Gadzhimagomedov So the big loss to Kadimagomedov is not unprecedented like people are making it out to be. That said, I fully expect that Dake would keep it competitive with Kadimagomedov next time, and perhaps even win. After all, in the case of Gadzhimagomedov, Dake was able to come back and tech him.

    Good job, Gilman

This was by far the best I’ve seen Gilman wrestle. That includes the year he took second at worlds. He was really a scoring machine and could have definitely won gold. If he wants to, I don’t see why he can’t win a world gold in the coming years. Really an awesome performance.

Watch the second match. Totally different story. He should've wrestled that match not to lose, I suppose, but instead, he overlooked an absolute dark horse stud and got his teeth kicked in, figuratively. He went for a big move, got countered feet to back, and completely lost match control after that, trying to big brother his way out of the 4-point hole that ended up escalating uncontrollably. Worst match I've ever seen Dake wrestle, to be honest.

    141 - (74 + 79) = -12 The math checks out
  21. 3 points
Ah he just needs to get a few years older. His body regressed way to young for these games.

    Coverage

Anyone else getting frustrated with the coverage? I go to the NBC site and have no idea which stream to open to watch which matches. I can't tell who's on deck, who's in the hole, general timing of what to watch and when. Commercials the second you click the link, start scrolling to try to find what you want to watch and you'll have to watch 3 commercials by the time you find it. I was watching a replay of the Taylor finals and mid match it just cut out and now I have to go back and try to refind it which I'm struggling with since certain links are bringing me to the wrong place. Maybe if you really studied the site some of these things you'd be able to figure out but in this day and age and the biggest stage I just find this coverage weak at best.

    Dake vs Chamizo for Bronze

After watching the Belarusian against both Dake and Chamizo, you have to be impressed. That kid is hot! Sometimes you have to give credit to the opponent.

I think that is a double from a previous match (Belarus). You can find video on YouTube of Taylor showing kids how he uses his ankle pick to set up doubles. Singles. Front headlocks. He's drilled it a million times. Worth a watch.
  27. 2 points
On Twitter, Dan Sweeney (who has a BJJ background) commented on Taylor's double using a camera angle I hadn't seen before: Check out David Taylor's footwork on this double leg. He enters w/ ankle pick mechanics, brings back knee forward as he reaches for other leg, drives again (off front leg this time) to get hips in, then steps w/ left foot to change angle + bring his hips even closer. Masterful. Video here.

If (big if) Steveson disposes of Geno like how he has his previous three opponents, I don't think it's a stretch to consider him right up there with Taylor as the best P4P wrestler in America. Maybe even better than Taylor.

dake was perfectly fine, healthy just got beat The iranian he beat first round he beat more soundly than JB did at worlds few years ago. Jb won in the last 30 seconds. The dude he lost to just beat Chamizo and has beaten Sidakov. Prbly wasn't even on Dake's radar, give Dake time to prep for him likewise and it could be different.

gable is different... my guess is he wins and makes it look entirely too easy against one of the best in the world... just like he did last night against one of the best in the world...

    Coverage

i think this is the best olympic coverage ever. every single match is live on olympic channel and then they play replays of it darn near all day. if you don't have that channel you can watch live online on nbcolympics. it's also been on USA channel. if you don't have any of those options available to you...idk...look in to getting one of them

    Double Bronze

My guess is that, in boxing, the idea is that once you lose, it's not a good idea to fight again so soon. I don't see how that logic applies to wrestling (or judo). Maybe they just want to limit the number of matches.

Congrats to DT. Yazdani adjusted well and controlled the match but DT deserved the win with two takedowns to Yazdani's pushouts, even though it hurts how close Yazdani came to winning.

    Taylor Olympic GOLD medal match

Comment from Iran board (one of many like it): "Unlucky Yaz. The strategy I understand but he needed at least a couple of attacks too. He was leaving it too close and it cost him this time. Tough one for him." Really all Yaz did was grab DT's head and push. It almost worked, but was unimpressive against a clutch DT.

    Iran Wrestling News

Yazdani made sensible adjustments and did his best. It wasn't good enough. Sad but we can't ask for more. Taylor deserved the win with two takedowns, Yazdani didn't deserve to win with two push outs and a passivity point. Yazdani's plan to win without takedowns to avoid gassing left him vulnerable because DT won't stop shooting and Yazdani can't defend them all. DT will be 33/34 for Paris and that's probably Yazdani's best hope of ever defeating Taylor. At what point do we give Ghasempour the spot even though Yazdani consistently beats him? If we want gold at 86kg that has to be worth a shot, though it would be very unfair to Yazdani.

I didn’t see Dake being way off physically. I saw him move fluidly and crisply get to the body multiple times and then get hit with unbelievably sick counters and ridiculously perfect hip placement from the Belarusian. He got out wrestled by something he was not ready for at all. Looked like Yoel Romero vs. Adam Saitiev. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  41. 2 points
Had he kept his wits when it was 0-4 and regrouped mentally he would have realized he had all kinds of time to chip away at the deficit and there was no need to panic. Instead, he put himself in another bad position and went down 0-6. From then on, it looked to me like he was panicking and he continued to wrestle poorly. Credit to Belarus. He came in very prepared and took advantage of every opportunity given him.
  42. 2 points
At least Dake isn't even 25 yet, he will be back in 2024

Only having 6 weight classes has screwed up Olympic wrestling, IMO. Too many guys wrestling at inappropriate weight.

I love listening to them both. Personally, I love that Smith can't not be a coach while he's commentating. I think it's excellent.
