    NIL Issues in Happy Valley?

Based on people arguing about it in this thread and how fired up you are about it, clearly it is controversial.

    Cox's Issues?

J'den will never get over the 2020 OTT but his life will move on. Folks showed their true colors in the aftermath. He is human. It may be 365 days to move past the OTT and it will take his death to dissipate his emotions at those that do not have his back. You ever lose an immediate family member, had your heart broken, or been publicly embarrassed about something that defines your identity? It scars you and takes time. Be supportive.

    Cox's Issues?

Reading all this is really just plain comical to me, because none of it matters. We all saw the same interviews. And everyone will have different opinions on the same. The reality is he's honestly just tired of talking about it or even dealing with it. Maybe it's a hint that the entire wrestling community should just drop it, because the 100% fact is no one on here is qualified to speak about it. J'den is fine. Let's as a community get behind him and all our wrestlers headed to Oslo and cheer them on to victory. Pretty sure at the end of the day, that's the only thing that maters. #itsjustwrestling

    NIL Issues in Happy Valley?

Lmao I saw an ad for this show and it looks demonic. But the "pack of virtue signalers" are signaling to an existing audience. They're just doing it ham-handedly. It's also probably a generational thing. You might not have a lot of friends who believe in social justice issues because you're older, but a huge majority of people under 40 do. Most of us (at least that I know) roll our eyes at corporations virtue signaling because we see it for what it is (and also know that all of their actual political money is still going to politicians that oppose a lot of these issues), but it doesn't change the fact that they want our money and are trying to figure out how to best market to us. Just like other corporations use American flag/troop and/or blue collar imagery to market to more conservative audiences. It's not any different. You just think one thing is cooler than the other.

Gable Steveson returns for the 2024 Olympic run. After going WWE for a few years, and apparently turning his back on Amateur Wrestling, the newly minted WWE Star returns to what made him who he is and... * Runs through everyone at Heavyweight at the OTT. His closest match is Kerkvliet in the finals, and he techs him in the first period. * At the Olympics, goes unscored upon, teching his way to his 2nd Olympic Gold. His star power at the WWE only increases, and the further cross-promotion of Amateur and Professional Wrestling goes into overdrive. In 2025, he lands a movie gig alongside The Rock. Let's see how this post ages. ;-)

    NIL Issues in Happy Valley?

The idea that multiple wrestlers on one team are getting six figure deals makes no sense. Why offer 100K when you can get them for 10K (or 1K)? There are three reasons I can think of to offer someone a big NIL deal: 1. To keep them away from a competing business 2. Because you believe that you will make the money back in additional sales or marketing exposure 3. To funnel money to wrestlers on the team without caring if you make it back in sales The third one seems like something a compliance office could get antsy about, especially if it seems like the payment is not for work actually performed.

I saw him in warmups wearing a tshirt that read "J'Den 96.9" on the front. It looked like he was owning the issue and I laughed out loud. He gave that shirt to a kid getting autographs at the end of the tournament.

It’s controversial to not want to leave 1,000s of Americans and our allies behind in a hostile country ? Weird take Well you should sit down and prepare to be shocked because gable total NIL deals will have him making over 7 figures this season other athletes are getting paid way more then 5 grand a year, what the hell does the Dean family and their thoughts on the COVID vax have to do with anything?

Why single him out? JB did his post-match interview without a shirt, as did Yianni. On the GR side, G'Angelo Hancock, Ben Provisor and Cohlton Schultz did so as well.

Looks like there was some confusion around whether or not the Living the Dream fund fell under Operation Gold Grant but apparently I was incorrect and it would not apply even if it was. I don't think I ever revisited the thread after seeing the initial post but there is a good explanation in the posts on this page http://board.themat.com/index.php?/topic/27715-gable-steveson-not-going-to-worlds/page/7/&tab=comments#comment-606585.

Yep, only I know the reason HWC is flat broke. KMF stole that money after he poured some truth serum down Perry. He is one step ahead of Johnny Law and buying the ladies "drinks" down to Mexico with that money. If you know what I mean and you do know what I mean.

Why is anyone skipping the Worlds?

Two main reasons. 1. Medaling at the olympics has so much financial and career implications that a lot of wrestlers are so happy/ depressed afterwards that they really don't care, let themselves go, and have no interest in attending because the medaling at worlds doesn't impact their lives nearly as much. 2. Some programs feel like its a good time to assess the depth of their teams and give their backups a chance. Or if they are a really good wrestling country give the others some limelight. The olympics are such a huge deal and if you have a deep country with a stud nr 2, giving him these worlds as a thank you sounds fair to a lot of these federations given they just missed the olympics. Unless you are chasing records, winning one more world doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things. Sad and Evloev are and thats why I think they are going. Sidakov is young, feels he has time, and probably isn't aiming for records so he didn't go.

    Jacob Kasper's WWE debut

Really interesting, thanks for the link. The point about wrestling entering a post-patriotic phase foreshadowed Kurt Angle perfectly. Thousands of people chanting "you suck" at an olympic champ holding the American flag. The comparison to Jerry Springer is 100% spot on as well (I made this same comparison in a previous thread)-and the culture has only gotten worse and more based on family drama (e.g. reality TV) and class jealousy (hatred against the educated/wealthy) . WWE will continue to lead the way. But still, have they lost their originality with crappy movie-ripoff nicknames? Or maybe they are just signaling to their fans that they will be the heels to the Steveson "Rocky" brothers? In terms of content from the weekly standard, this has to have been one of the few to really be prescient.

Furthermore, how much better did Megaludis, Cenzo, or Gullibon get with each passing year? Starocci was already elite last year. He'll no doubt improve, but whether he turns into a destroyer of worlds remains to be seen. It's not a guarantee that he'll outstrip everyone next year. Still, he's my pick to win. Begrudgingly.

    All eyes on Burroughs’ calf

This guy…I found it because I was so inclined. Let’s put JBs comments in context. He was on a show arguing why he would have beaten Dake in college since FRL was trying to determine the top 165 of the last decade or whatever. Askren then, surprisingly to JB, brings Dake on the show to argue his case. Dake immediately starts going low, makes comment of Taylor putting JB on his back and comments like, “he doesn’t want to say he’s gotten worse.” When the conversation moved to their upcoming match Dake starts going into how JB is getting older and how he knows how it sucks to be injured and he feels sorry for him. Listen to it, you tell me who comes off like the douche. But LJB got butt hurt that JB dared to say that 79kg was weak the last few years in his defense. Oh the horror. Again actually listen to it, see who goes low first and who sounds like a complete tool. When they surprise JB with Dake coming on he says what’s up Kyle twice to which Kyle finally gives him a charity head nod. It doesn’t take long to figure it out.

    Nolf

I was big on this when he came out. I thought he didn't have solid enough basic takedowns. The funk and rolling across his back and all that is brilliant to watch in folk, and he's somewhat proven me...."less right" in freestyle. But like you said when it comes to those guys around the top it's kind of a glaring issue that he doesnt have any reliable "go-to" attacks, and he has trouble creating those awkward positions he's so good in off of their offense. The subject of basic shots is interesting. He has a great lefty knee pull/ankle pick, which was all we saw at the trials, the same misdirection double taylor got yaz with, and in college he used to hit the low double that is retherford's only shot, but I havent seen it lately...I don't know whether to say if his problem is "go-to" attacks, diversity of attacks or just not inflicting enough damage in his hand fight.... its probably mixture.

    I want Cox vs Sadulaev

If his goal is crushing Saduleav any additional time acclimating to the weight is reason enough. But if he's competing at '23 worlds at 92kg and trying to take Snyder out a few months later at trials... He might be able to, but you could tell size was an issue the little bit of time we saw him compete at 97kg..... I'd feel a lot better if he took the time .

    Daton Fix, first since when?

The case appears to have passed scrutiny, and he's apparently performing within the given rules now. We can argue about whether the rules are fair and whether we'll still cheer for him, but the rules are a given. I was more torn on the subject of Russia at the Olympics this year. In a case with widespread corruption and zero contrition from the country, they were allowed to compete under the "ROC". If the Russian tone had been anything but combative and deflective, I might have been OK with the non-sanction of shaming the country if it also included competing under a flag that read, "We Cheated in Sochi". I'm not sure what a more fair sanction would look like in Fix's case. If the polygraph-tested statement is true, then would it be a better precedent to ban an athlete for 4 years because he drank from someone else's water bottle? I gotta think the Russians would be planting phony water bottles everywhere if this were a good solution.

    2 of 3 WTT Finals

Do you already know who is out (besides Rashidov ) ? Reportedly Ottoguro Japan, Aliev Azerbijian, Bajrang India, Nyazbekov Kazakhstan, and Musakaev Hungary are not going and Gadhiev Poland (guy who beat JO at Last Chance) will be at 70 kg. The 65 kg field is seriously watered down. I do not know if that will change anyone's mind about going. https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/7131568-tokyo-olympians-to-2021-worlds-tracker

    No HWC at WTT?

This has already been addressed. Historically, Iowa's freestyle program is almost exclusively Iowa alum. The older alum have either retired, are recovering from serious illness, or moved on. The next wave of Hawkeye freestylers are almost all on the current college team. It's a transition period to a younger generation exacerbated by COVID.

At the time Kemp and Brands were wrestling there were 10 Oly weights so 4 of them, I guess, were "less competitive."

    Hanging On Too Long

Why do you always post about wanting people to quit wrestling? Here's a serious answer to your dumb question. You only get so much time to wrestle, and when it's gone, it's gone for good. Some guys want to keep doing something they love for as long as they can because they won't ever get to do it again. Everyone wrestles their last match someday, and some want that last match to come as late as possible. Wrestling at a high level is something few people have the opportunity to do, and who are you to tell them they should give that up? Do you think these wrestlers are going to look back and be like, "I shouldn't have wrestled those last two years. Think of all the good work I could have been doing in the gym equipment sales industry."
