About the time I read play by play of Helen Maroulis' dominant world gold medal from my wrestling streaming sites Twitter account.
  2. 3 points
Gilman's post-gold interview had one mostly cogent reflection on "learning". When asked if he wanted a rematch with Uguev, he replied that (paraphrasing) If wrestling the Iranian was a fistfight, wrestling Uguev was a chess match...Uguev is really good at winning...I had scored enough points to win but he found a way to win...I'm pretty good at wrestling, and I kept wrestling, but I'm still learning how to win consistently the way Uguev does...Yes, I absolutely want the rematch. Gilman also had a not-so-cogent reference to what he's 'learning' that I didn't follow, but the first one made sense. Reflection is important. I'm not sure how much fans need to hear sincere reflection, but when we do get something thoughtful and cogent I appreciate it. Cox' post-bronze interview revealed a more specific description of when he decided not to attack on the left, which is where he know's he's best - something about recognizing that his opponent was too comfortable there and was looking to exploit that for a counter...and that he regrets that such a thought stopped him. As for wrestlers being gun shy/wrestling too conservatively/having too much respect for an opponent, the flip side of that is being reckless and getting countered by other elite wrestlers, kinda like Snyder did at the Olympics. We'll gripe when they're too conservative, and we'll gripe when their too reckless...

Is JB now the American GOAT?

No one is discussing the difference in financial opportunities between when Smit and JB competed. Back in 1992 it was difficult to make a living and still compete - not as bad as 10 years before that but still difficult. JB is essentially a professional athlete now. He has been making a good amount since he started and there is a financial incentive to keep going if you are on a level that JB is. If that had existed in Smith's day would he have gone on? Who knows? Still it is good that those opportunities exist for todays athletes.

I didn't listen to the interview either, and I don't intend to. Meanwhile, it appears to have devolved into the "who's to blame for placing 2nd to a country that doesn't exist" thread. OP seems to agree that it's Cox.

    Yianni - 2021 worlds

OK, what happened? He was shut down in his loss. Could not break through the head hands / positioning defense. And when he did take big risks he was countered (I need to rewatch). I tend to think he is generally, at these very very high levels, on the wrong side of the strength comparison but that is a guess. Expert opinions on where he needs to focus?

Is JB now the American GOAT?

I think the point is most people consider Kemp better than Cejudo even though he has no Olympic gold. Smith has one more Olympic gold than JB but if it’s possible for Kemp to be better than Cejudo, it’s possible for JB to be better than Smith. I agree with you that Smith should still be considered GOAT right now. However, I f JB wins worlds next year then I think he earns it, but still debatable. If he wins the next two years I think it’s a done deal before 2024 Olympics If I need to know anything about wrestling or sports, I ask@ShakaAloha because he knows more than me.

First, it makes him the first to take 4 championships in a row. Secondly, no red-shirt or grey-shirt required. Thirdly, unbeaten 109 in a row in college. 3 x World Champ and Olympic favorite. Did it without a stipend like most others. Was still 18 when he beat Gable. Regularly beat the USSR team members. Enjoy the video.

84 yes. 92 was full strength. A lopsided draw that produces a weak finalist doesn't change that. Bruce beat his rival Gobe at 92 who was a great wrestler.

To beat Suriano, he has to be 100% and Suriano needs to be 75% or below (like their national championship meeting). So he will end a 3xer. I think Glory beats him now too

Abbaspour surprised me big time, I mean for few minutes I couldn't believe what I witnessed !! Sefershaev (possible gold medalist) lost to our #3 and needed lots of helps from the ref to beat our #4 in Serbian tournament a month ago but then our #1 lost like that (10-1 !!!) to someone who got teched easily in the next round. I was hoping for gold in this weight. I was expecting this defeat for Geraei, he had to go all out against Vlasov. we knew Roman will finish the match if he gets the chance on top. Geraei had to try much harder to avoid the first caution. I believe Vlasov will win the SF but then it will be hard for this Geraei (mentally broken) to come back for bronze. in Tokyo he only had to beat a mediocre Japanese for the bronze but failed. Mokhtari did great as expected. I won't write more since I don't want to jinx him lol Poshtam also did much better than expectations specially after that shaky start against India. he is not fun to watch but he is tough and can push anybody around the mat. I think it will be 50/50 in the semis. he as to avoid the caution because the Turk looked really good in parterre

Its impossible! Plain and simple. You win 30 matches in a row and then lose 1 and people say "Why didn't he wrestle in a way where he wins that one match, he should've known what he did the previous 30 matches wasn't going to work this time!" It's so idiotic. "I know he has a history of winning, but I know what he should be doing to actually win." "USA Wrestling should hire me, I would tell all our athletes that if they're just more aggressive early they'll never lose" "Our elite level guys should know at this point they need to score more points than their opponents, I don't get why they don't just go out there and do it"
  29. 1 point
Yianni is the only guy i missed this week, so i can't comment on him. Green is a former world medalist who literally had some of the nicest shots of anyone and simply couldn't finish, actually he lost because of giving up points off his shot. BRUTAL. He is a physical specimen but doesn't wrestle like it. DT, Cox and Snyder all wrestled some all timers this week and basically all of them took the wrong approach. None of them made their opponents uncomfortable, none of them looked to get after their offense early and often. They were all expecting to win 3-2, 2-1, 2-2 type matches and quite frankly that's not gonna work. I saw very few angles being created and level changes and shots below the knee for all three of these guys. Our international posters put so much emphasis on hand fighting and controlling the center and we didn't do that either. Snyder literally tip toed the out of bounds as did Cox and it cost him dearly with the caution. Frustrating yes. None of their performances have us clamoring to wait until the next time, we all seemed resigned that we can no longer beat these guys. It's up to the coaches to change some tactics. JB what more can we say. The dude is a warrior. Gwiz has maxed his body's potential IMO.

Bill wrestled for gable in the mid 90s. He won NCAAs his senior year in 1996. Gable was retired by the time Bill won worlds in 2006 so it's not clear how much credit Gable deserves. Still I think you are thinking of Bill's brother Mike who wrestled for Zalesky. He won a world silver in 2006 which I omitted from the list because he didn't wrestle for Gable. Cael's doing great but the numbers favor Gable. Even taking away 1984, 9 of Gable's wrestlers won world level medals. Cael hasn't had 9 wrestlers make world teams yet (Paulson, Paulson, Varner, Ruth, Molinaro, Zain, Taylor). Gable has coached upwards of 20 wrestlers to world team spots.

Sadulaev is the best I've ever seen

Some things to compare to. Medved- most decorated. Watanbe- Undefeated senior level career Saitiev, Belglazov, Fadzaev, Yordanov- Currently more decorated than Sad Ivantisky- Never gave up a point internationally Yarygin- Won by pin every match in Oly and worlds back to back. Levan Tediashvili- Longest unbeaten streak in Freestyle? (5 years )

I believe that Taylor is probably more respected internationally. To the Russians, Cael is champion of the "students division." and a one time World/Olympic champ who looked inept in par terre.

    Women's Team Score

My whole point in posting that list is to show everybody how deep Japan is and what these women wrestlers ranked in Japan before they secured their spot on the World Team for this year minus the Olympians. 50kg Yoshimoto is really good and trains with the Kawai sisters, but she's not touching Susaki. Susaki beat her once already when Susaki tried to come back too early with a dislocated elbow in 2019. 53kg- It's going to be a serious war between Mukaida and Fujinami. Mukaida just got married after the Olympics, so her focus might have been taken away just a little bit, but who knows. 55kg- Sakurai. She's also really good, but more than likely, Nanjo will drop to 55kg from 57kg because she already trains at Shigakkan University with Risako and Yukako Kawai. She won't try to take the 57 spot from Risako because she can't beat her anyways. 57kg- Risako Kawai also just got married, but I know she's going to keep competing for sure. 59kg- Akie Hanai also trains at Shigakkan University with Nanjo and both Kawai sisters. 62kg- Yukako Kawai vs Ozaki for sure. Ozaki was seconds away from taking out Tynybekova and I think she would have won the world title this year had that happened. 65kg- This weight is too unpredictable because a lot of wrestlers moved around for this weight. Morikawa got a lot better because she currently attends NSSU where she's being coached by Kaori Icho. 68kg- Same as above. Dosho has owned this weight in Japan since the last quad, but she's probably going to hang it up soon. After that shoulder injury a few years ago, she's not the same. 72kg- Same as 65kg and 68kg. 78kg- Same as 65, 68and 72kg.

Her movement was pretty good, continually putting Turkey into compromised positions. I'm excited to see her grow into the adult version. Two years ago she was a 16yr old cadet bronze medalist at 61!

    Women's Team Score

She looked flimsy, and she completely gassed out at about 5min. I imagine the 10lb drop since Junior Worlds 6 weeks ago played a part. She had some throw-bys and misdirection in ties that could have put her in advantageous positions, but she could never square her hips - all spaghetti and no meatball. I'll be curious to see if she conditions for the weight for the next year or just settles in at 76 and sets her sights on Adeline this quad. She was certainly out-horsed by the Turkish woman. Whether is was the cut or just being an 18yr old getting hulked by a 26yr old former World medalist, she was weaker and over-powered. It was a humbling senior debut, but there's no where to go but up!

Snyder and Taylor - need new RTC?

IMO Snyder has lost a step on his attacks; he seems slower and thus more tentative to shoot. It also looks like he is thicker, maybe due to heavy lifting. To beat Sadulaev, I think he needs to go Yazdani on him; that is learn to force an undertook and use his power to drive Sadulaev out. If he worked that strategy for a year, he could get pretty good at it. Much of success in wrestling is just controlling situations, like ties, better than your opponent. Iran works constantly on their undertook series, and it easy to see the positive results. What he has to offer right now against Sadulaev isn't going to win in the future unless he develops a new attack. Also, constantly digging for underhooks will prevent him from going on the shot clock which happened to him twice. Sadulaev NEVER shot. Something new is needed.

It wasn't a snippet from this interview was it ? Cause in this one he says things like . After watching the video numerous times, I simply didn't do enough. It wasn't my mindset going out there but after watching the tape it's what happened. I need to take accountability for what happened, I didn't sprawl and clear correctly. Hats off to him for sticking to his game plan, but I should've done more . I feel terrible (I think he said "what peeves me") that I couldn't shoulder the load for team USA and I left the other guys in positions where they have to win for us to win the team title and that's something that's hurting me. Lol what a good guy.

Is JB now the American GOAT?

Remember, there were 10 weights when Smith won his 2 Olympic gold's and one of his golds he lost a match. With today's rules he would have been wrestling for bronze (maybe not even that as the guy he lost to lost). JBs Olympic gold was with 7 weights. Factor in the USSR v Russia argument, as well. Smith had a 6 year senior career (including his first Goodwill Games). JB has a 10 year senior career and is still going.
