Is JB now the American GOAT?

Smith knew the rules well. They made the match he lost inconsequential. Like a sprinter getting third in a heat but advancing all the same.

    Jeremiah Moody health issues

I ran across this and thought I'd post it. Former Hawkeye Jeremiah Moody was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and so has a very difficult battle ahead of him. Here is a link to a fundraiser for him. https://www.gofundme.com/f/moodys-movement

I think that's why I too would go with peak Monday over peak JB. More complete wrestler. Dave Schultz said Monday was so nasty with the lat drop that he knew it was coming, he knew he would set it up by pushing in with the overhook side and then reversing direction, and you still couldn't do anything about it.

    Yianni - 2021 worlds

Yianni is an excellent wrestler and I agree with spladle that he is a coin flip with most of the world's top guys. I believe he can scramble and score on anyone at 65kg. My point was that those dive shots from space was the reason he lost in Oslo. And I've seen Yianni dive shoot in other recent matches as well. I feel if he can tidy up his neutral position on his feet he will be right there and can win a medal next year, of course if he makes the team. And while I'm at it, I'll pick Yianni to make our team and medal next year. Interesting against Bajrang, Yianni didn't shoot from space at all and scored nice takedowns off of tie-ups. Here it is:

Agree with this take. Gilman has become the best version of himself in the last few months. Whoever comes out of Trials in 2024 between him, Spencer, Vito, Daton, and Nicky Pushups is going to be a medal threat in Paris.

He makes greco exciting. Yes he definitely is. He was a bit unlucky in Tokyo, wrestled a really good match in the semis. He is good enough to win world gold/olympic gold. But he needs a good draw. He would have to be on his best day to beat Vlasov. Top wrestler

    The obvious question nobody asked

I keep reviewing the matches that our world team members wrestle at the WC. All rounds, and am comparing the differences that I'm seeing in those that medal, vs. Those that do not. Aside from generational talents of Yazdani and Sadulaev this past tournament getting in the way of two of our superstars, the medalists seem to have a commonality: not just the desire to win, but the unequivocal belief of self that they will win, and handily. Yianni & Green seemingly wrestled apprehensive, yet possess the skills to clearly compete and win at this level. Our medalists wrestled with attitude and determination that exudes confidence. When going against an equally skilled opponent that does not have that level of confidence, the attitude becomes an overwhelming force. Gilman is wrestling with this same determination now. Not just to wrestle to win, but to wrestle to dominate. As such, Gilman is our 57kg rep until proven otherwise, regardless of who tries. He has improved, no doubt, and although Spencer Lee could be formidable, he has the ACL issue, and a lack of recent results that would dictate. Now, Spencer also wrestles with the same determination that I described above, but... one has to first be healthy and in peak condition to leverage this "intangible" to its fullest extent.

    Suriano to PSU

It depends on whether he managed to finish his undergraduate degree. If he did not finish it (likely online) he could ONLY go to PSU (or Rutgers) without having to take a year off due to this being his second transfer. If he did (and I heard he might have) then he should be able to decide based on what he thinks is best for him.

Suriano was what like 19 when he left psu?…since then has traveled the world , won a national title , he’s probably 24 25 now , people mature a lot from 18-25 and I’ve never got the impression that cael and co hold grudges, and it’s not like they made it difficult for suriano to leave , cael signed the release so he could compete right away

I believe so. Like men's and women's anything (Isn't that how it goes in all individual sports since they're entirely 2 different teams in 2 different events) Swimming, gymnastics, etc... Gymnastics would probably be the easiest comparison. I'm sure some of the men would like the women to carry them to a team title/medal. but I don't know of any men's/women's teams combined recognition.

    Greco Worlds Thread ;)

Ljb said he was our only real medal threat. They way he's wrestling I'd have to say, great prediction Hancock's looking great. Szoke of Hungary that he's got next lost earlier this year in an Olympic qualifier to Milov that Hancock just beat. But I'm not sure Schultz can't medal. A 5-3 loss to Kajaia is a HUGE performance. Only a few guys on earth are capable of coming that close to Kajaia or beating him. Greco heavyweight is different from freestyle or even other Greco weights. It's super predictable with clear tiers. The 10-20th best guys will virtually never come that close. It's a huge result that signals big potential things to come.

OK! I agree! I just didn't want to make it seem like I was supporting too many old guys, especially at the expense of Burroughs. Monday was my favorite. Deadly leg attacks but also a great lateral drop, which he used in big matches against the best.

Snyder and Taylor - need new RTC?

Rumor is that these two "losers" (mere multiple time World and Olympic Champions) have embraced the wisdom of Wrestling Forum advice and sought out new scenery and off-the-grid RTCs. Upon returning from Oslo, they reportedly packed small handmade duffle bags and headed into a foreign desert—cloud hidden, whereabouts unknown—on horses with no name, where they plan to evacuate their full bellies and empty their conscious minds toward the goal of becoming grappling Zen masters. They will train with powerful punching kangaroos (who have been bred to use Iranian under-hooks and Russian two-on-one ties), beneath the slowly shifting shadows of Saguaro Cacti. They will push and pull and push back some more against dancing Eurasian Brown Bears. They will shoot thousands of single leg takedowns on legless Rattlesnakes and Sidewinders. They will hypnotize Desert Owls with their focus and gaze, learn to scramble with the quickest Indian Grey Mongoose, and hand fight for hours with a rarely seen but legendary nomadic and crepuscular Octopus who dwells in the pool of a shimmering oasis. After a long, hard, and painfully cold winter of training that ends with a punishing "vacation" to the Arctic tundra and a tournament against a team of veteran Polar Bears, they will return to civilization for the World Team Trials in Spring of 2022 before seizing the opportunity—and their destiny—to dispatch their respective Iranian and Russian nemeses in Serbia at the World Championships! Ad astra per aspera!

There is no Cuba in this Worlds. No Cuba is like if Iran or the US didn't show up for Men's Freestyle. A lot more Olympic medalists missing as well. Nowry probably out unless Norayr saves him and in any case really hard bronze path, Porter is a mainstay of the squad so bad that he is out 0-1. Vlasov looking reallly good. Provisor still alive for Bronze... Hancock has a good draw. Hancock refuses to win matches that are winnable for him so the draw can only help so much if something in his head doesn't click. Sargsyan is a physical specimen though and I think he gets gold no matter what after beating Saravi. Schultz's draw is baddish. Has the 130 kg nominal favorite Kajaia. Kajaia is decorated, good all around, and Semenov's (Russian who beat Coon in finals) arch nemesis. Kajaia is not Riza good but beating him would be a big upset. Schultz might have a bronze look. Yildrim and the mediocre Russian rep would be his opponents.

Do We Know Dake is Going 74?

This. Dake stays at 74kg because if he medals at 2023 Worlds, he gets a bye to the Olympic Trials Finals (best of 3). If Burroughs remains at 79kg through 2023 Worlds, he would only get a bye to the semis of the 74 kg or 86kg Olympic Trials challenge tournament if he medaled at 2023 Worlds. Staying at 74kg and medaling at Worlds gives Dake the inside track to the Olympic Team spot at 74kg, which is what he cares about in the long run.

Great interview. The quote at the end should be on a poster or something. "It's not easy, but it's also not impossible."
  43. 1 point
JB is rare among wrestlers in that he thinks, A LOT, about everything. What's more, is he's willing to talk about it and let people know what he's thinking about. In doing so, there were a few years there where from the outside it didn't seem like he was all-in, with talk of what's next, should he hang it up, can he still be the best, etc. Listening to him today, I don't get that sense at all, which might worry me a little bit if I was Kyle Dake. Granted, by the time those trials roll around JB will be nearly 36 and Dake will just be hitting cadet eligibility.
