    Austin Mad Man Desanto

Reminds me of a buddy of mine who lost his leg from just below the knee down due to a car accident when we were seniors in HS 1969 and so had to get an artifical lower leg. We all needled each other about everything, so after a while we started calling him "Maple Leg", when we knew he'd be cool with it and give it back to us about something. One day, another buddy of ours called him "Old Hickory". Our buddy with the artifical leg always talked out the side of his mouth like a gangster and had a gravelly voice. He look at us and said "You dumb moth******ers . If this was made out of maple or hickory, I wouldn't be able to lift it." Somebody said "Well, what is it made out of?" He said "How the f**k do I know, balsa or something I guess." Man, I still laugh about that 50+ years later. His wrestling career was over, but he still played baseball and later was a hammer in the local softball leagues.

Gable is the Olympic champ, Zare was not. He kinda already deserves the crown......no? But man I love this. Great stuff!!

So you're saying only Otoguro is any good?
  4. 2 points
At this exact moment, if you started 70 teams tomorrow, you'd have some issues roster filling to get every school up to 30-40 over night. But when you get a generations worth of kids going to college, that will only increase. The numbers at the HS level will only go up as well.

I'd say Mike Jones at Simon Fraser University deserves some credit for turning Helen around after she lost to Kelsey Campbell at Olympic Trials. She went on to win three more collegiate titles for SFU after transferring there.

Tenacity is great but to navigate what that bracket could end up being, he’s going to have to have the technique…and tactics….to get through a number of individuals competing on a world class level, and the defending champ, who has his number. Going to take more than being tenacious.

I would like to see us evolve the headgear to also include a mask. But each wrestler will have a customized design like in Mexican Lucha Libre. Just have the N95 technology over the mouth hole and problem solved

Official as per Flowrestling. Gable Stevenson says he would be willing to face Zare. Don't know if WWE will allow it though. But you could have an epic card. I would actually like to go against the grain a bit and do more unconventional matches and do Burroughs Vs Yazdani at 86 or cactchweight. Instead of Taylor vs Yazdani 5. Have Ghasempour face Taylor instead. Zare vs Gable would be sweet to see who deserves the crown. Mohammadian vs Cox at 97? Obviously the more obvious choices are rematches in Taylor and Yaz and Cox and Ghasempour. Either way it is exciting. But I think having Burroughs vs Yazdani is a superfight and then some and a big draw. More than Yaz and Taylor.

He said on instagram on the post about this event that he wants to be included. I'm sure they will do that because Zare - Gwiz is not interesting. And i'm assuming the organiser has some guarantee/word from the Iranian federation that Iran will send their number 1 team, if not I wouldn't invite them. No one wants to see Taylor vs Bazri, lol.
  14. 1 point
Just a guess but I would think Flo would dictate this lineup more so than USAW. They'll be the ones paying out for it. I doubt we see Taylor/Yazdani in this. I imagine at this point they're not going to want to square off when there's not a world title on the line. They're at the point where every match is going to be about what was learned from their last match....

I mean I don't know if the 25 is significant. They've all gained experience since the last time Micic wrestled Folkstyle (2019) Fix just turned in a performance at Worlds. RBY been a folkstyle dynamo. Blah blah blah. (Mentioning the advancements of everyone else ) Yes he's gotten older but when do you stop developing, especially in a style you haven't been practicing. I'd say the advancements those freshman have made since he last competed are going to be hurdles.

I can see Vito knocking off any of the top guys but I could also see him getting shut down and losing big to someone like Micic , he’s a true wildcard at this weight

I've been thinking the same thing a little. "Does Micic still care about folkstyle wrestling?" If he's in prime form he can win it, if not. .... Might be a lousy performance. As far as Desanto goes. With Micic/Fix/RBY/Vitali (is he here this year )/ Suriano/ and then all those fringe guys ... I'll assume he gets 4th/5th He's as impressive as they come, it's just a tough weight

    Spencer Lee Questions Answered

Agree with you and should be more specific. His work to shrink his body to wrestle at 125 I believe impacted him at the World Trials. He looked no where near as imposing. He needs to hit the weights again and be that guy that ran through a very tough 133lb bracket. He controlled the entire tournament unless his close finals with Fix.

In general, as soon as a state HS assn endorses, the numbers in that state rise drastically. I work with USAW/NJ. We had been taking at most about 6 girls to Fargo each year until 2019 (first year endorsed) when we had 10/11. This past summer even with what we thought would be some very tough covid related conditions we brought 30! Guys were up some also but nothing like that. So the point is that girls HS numbers will likely increase drastically as states sanction.

You said Ohio State underachieves, can't develop, peak as freshmen. On all of those points, I disagree. You also said they've struggled with mat wrestling. On that point, we can agree. Always happy to look cool, though.

There are 69 Power 5 football schools and ~ 22,000 female HS wrestlers. Is that a Yea or a Nay? 1% of 22000 is 220. 220/69 ~= 3.2, so it seems like a Nay.

Before my wife stopped wrestling and was here, she got numerous offers to compete in college. She never gave it any serious thought and told every single one no thank you politely. I asked her why and she said if she was going to keep wrestling, that was going to be 100% her focus. She didn't want to pay money, a large amount considering how inexpensive college is back home, to wrestle and also have to attend classes. Had she not badly hurt her shoulder, she would have just picked an RTC and gone that route.

    David Taylor Flo Critique

If you don't have Flo.... What they're talking about is basically: Taylor: I don't usually lose, I expect to win, and people start saying I should win and its easy but it's not. Mike Mal, more or less asks: Since everyone is saying its easy do you think you took for granted beating Yazdani? Taylor is like, naw, the media, you specifically play it up like these are easy matches when in reality the score doesn't necessarily reflect what's happening out there, the margins are razor thin (then he dives into a mini breakdown of the last 2 matches.) He's right, but Flo is ultimately just a marketing machine not so much a fact based deal. Youtube: https://youtu.be/9lGU2gODCeY

    Yianni - 2021 worlds

Totally agree. The reality here- there are almost as many world class wrestlers at 65 kg than there are at the other five Olympic weights combined. At 86 and 97 kg you basically have to worry about the Russian and the Iranian these days. At 65 kg, virtually every wrestler in the 32 man bracket is a threat. Typically Russia has a half dozen guys that can beat our best guy on any given day. There's a reason we haven't medaled here in 15 years, despite sending a variety of guys that were considered legends. What's ironic is that it's arguably the least heralded guys we sent (Zadick and Molinaro) that did the best. Go figure.

    Suriano to PSU

I'll believe Suriano is wrestling college when I see him on the mat. If he does, I have no doubt it will be for Penn State (against all odds). It's the ultimate mercenary move, literally coming in for just the second half of the season but: 1. Who would say no to Nick Suriano joining there team? Not many. 2. Who would say no to wrestling for Cael Sanderson and Penn State? Again, not many.

Lawsuit definitely expedited things, but it had been in discussion prior to COVID. Barta's pretty much owned that and the lawsuit impact from the onset here.

The circumstances around Iowa adding the sport should temper any excitement about a potential boom in big time college women's wrestling. A couple of full time coaches, a national travel schedule, and 10 full scholarships is an expensive ask coming after COVID.

    Yianni - 2021 worlds

Yianni is way better than most of you are saying. He's not a medalist level guy, obviously, but he is absolutely a threat at every tournament he enters, even in a fully attended 65 kg. He wrestled a very poor match strategically against a surprisingly good defensive opponent: his opponent just stood there waiting to counter and Yianni kept taking the bait repeatedly with the same strategy of attempting to use motion to set up shots from space. Yianni does have good setups, they just didn't work against a guy with lead hips who looked 4 inches shorter and just stood there. Yianni's main setups are misdirection from space and excellent reshots. Buth when a guy doesn't engage, neither works that well. Yianni still has a lot of upside. Yes, he has wrestled the vast majority of his life and has focused on freestyle for a while, but he is also transitioning from a somewhat plodding stance to much more motion, from highly defensive offense to offense he initiates, and from countering deep shots to downblocking them. It took a freak like Kyle Dake a few years to adjust to a different style, and even Dake is still figuring out how to improve it. Give Yianni more time.
