^^^Mike Johnson was an interesting wrestler - one of the best in PA high school history. Johnson was about 84-0 in high school, a 4X PIAA champ, and was never taken down his entire hs career. His signature move was a lightning quick duck under. Johnson used to say, "Put a quarter down behind you and I'll pick it up before you can."As I recall, the first folkstyle bout Johnson lost was in Dec of 1961 in the Wilkes Open finals, losing a close bout at 123 pounds to Pitt's excellent lower weight Dick Martin. Back then, big NCAA schools, as you all know, had to hold their true frosh out a year before they could compete. The Wilkes, however, was open, and Pitt coach Rex Peery would enter his varsity team and also other Panthers would enter unattached. Cliff Keen used to bring his powerful Michigan teams into the Wilkes Open back then, and excellent post-grads would enter, out of the New York Athletic Club. Ahh, the old days, Gone With the Wind.

^^There was a phenomenal kid who was a senior in high school in Kentucky the 1973-74 season.  He had made the 1972 U.S. Men's Olympic Freestyle team and placed 12th in the 1972 Olympics at 114.5 pounds.  In Dec of 1973, as a high school senior, he competed in the Midlands, won the event, beating the defending NCAA champ in the finals and was selected Midlands' OW.  Incredible accomplishments for a high school kid!

Dave Auble, from Ithaca, was a 2X NCAA champ (1960 NCAA OW) for Cornell and only lost one match in college.  Back in Auble's years in high school, NY did not have state championships.  Auble also was an excellent freestyler.

Actually, as I recall, Blatnick won Olympic Greco Gold the year most of the best Greco were not entered.  I've never head anyone argue that was a world-class Greco field.

^^Imo the NCAA redshirt rules are crazy.  I'd toss the RS rules out and replace them with simple rule, such as you get 6 yrs to use 4 yrs, or whatever.  No questions asked about WHY you take a year off.
Bottom line, however, is that NCAA college wrestling is whatever the rules say it is.

Having NCAA Tournament in March is incredibly successful.  Back in the old days we used to start the season in Dec and end with NCAA tournament late March.  Have NCAA tournament in April and we could compete more coverage with NASCAR, major league baseball, NHL, etc and filing of Fed income tax returns.  Why change very successful March tounament?  Youns want to wrestle fewer fall dates - coaches can do that now.

^^Gulibon was down 2-0 and ridden about 50 seconds at end of first period.  THEN Gulibon, from top, rode out the second period and dominated the third period.  Looked to me like he had Alexander very well scouted and did not once get head trapped underneath.  Very impressive second and third periods for James Gulibon.

^^When you film a dual meet in the WVU arena you need camera shots from empty side of arena, so you are shooting across the mat into the crowd.  The atmosphere can be electric for WVU home events.

^^Troll posts generally do not bother me. I like posts that give facutal info, esp inside factual information and they can be from neutral sources or trolls. I think think the goofiest posts are the rah-rah-shish-boom-bah cheerleader posts that absolutely add no college wrestling facts.
