  1. I think Iowa is in a little bit of trouble going forward. They don't seem to have that magic (no PSU pun intended) anymore that they had even as recently as the Metcalf era. They usually found a way to win matches like 125, 141 and 149 and outwork their opponents to win duals. They looked tired if anything. Ramos and DSJ are gone next year and those are both VERY big losses. Possible changes needed at the state HS and youth level because they simply aren't landing the national blue chippers right now and the Iowa natives are mid to upper level when they arrive. They don't seem to be winning the recruiting or coaching battle right now but as someone else pointed out injuries and walk offs have hurt.
  2. Maybe I came in a little too hot. I'd pay to watch online after the fact if I knew that was an option, just didn't know it was. But are you being serious with that post?
  3. Can't find the match anywhere. This is part of wrestling's problem.
  4. The impact Goodale has had on the program in terms of where they stand as fully funded, alumni and fan support is LIGHT YEARS away from where it was when he took over. Unfortunately they haven't had much success when it counts on the mat. There was a year I think they were ranked as high as 3rd(?) during the dual meet season. A lot of the talent he brought in crapped out and that can be due to a number of outside factors as well as the situation inside the program. Happens at every school. But missing AAs out of Mason, Melde, and Winston (injury plague) hurt the program. They were very lucky to get another blue chipper in Ashnault and a lot is riding on him to do well.
  5. I noticed Dave Esposito wrestled as well. Any details on that match?
  6. Your online persona has to say something about your actual persona, no?
  7. Its early and Molinaro is obviously a great guy to have in the room but who else is there? RU fans are on edge with the last couple of seasons. Ashnault NEEDS to do well.
  8. Certainly looks like Retherford has put some distance between himself and AA since they last met. I love what RU is trying to do but they might need to take a hard look at the coaching staff.
  9. Early is the word. shocking loss nonetheless. Those who thought that Maple would "walk through" (FLO) 149 are mistaken. He will be in the mix, maybe even the favorite, but bumping up a weight is not as easy as Dake and Oliver have made it look.
  10. Schultz was one of the most, if not the most, technically skilled wrestler the US has seen. Won with a tremendous amount of varied techniques, that was his strong point along with physical strength. Burroughs is incredible but he's not winning on superior technique. I'd take Burroughs over most, I might draw the line at a B Saitiev in his prime. Slay and Joe Williams were both able to take down Saitiev with power doubles though so you never know. If JB wins two more worlds and another Olympics in this fashion he likely has to be considered best ever.
  11. Ed Ruth could go up to 197 and win comfortably IMO.
  12. There HAS to be more to this story. If Chance is close with Haines maybe that played a part? There has to be an unwritten rule amongst coaches that you don't try to out recruit a wrestler once a commitment has been given. How much of a FU move by Smith is this? Surely not the first time but maybe the first time the #1 recruit has done this between arguably the #1 and #2 programs. Mocco, but his switch was mid college career. As far as Chance's ability, I see him great out of the gate with a somewhat limited ceiling but only time will tell. I'd love to know the whole story. It does open up the possibility for a great ginger rivalry between Chance and Bo throughout their college careers and evens the recruiting plane up a little bit.
  13. Jordan Oliver looked great and Abas still looked like he had it. I was really surprised he held up for the 9 minute match. Wasn't as active as he was 10 years ago (nobody expected him to be) but showed flashes that he's still that guy and wrestled a smart match to win against a dangerous opponent. Askren got Q to wrestle his match as always and made it look fairly easy. Rules: Two things I was unsure of while watching. Why were no exposure points given at the end of the Abas match? Looked like one or both guys were exposed to their back. Also, the 3+ points for a hold seem excessive especially since a trap arm gut wrench usually sees a "hold" after and basically spells match over. The Askren Q match was much closer than it seemed, I believe he received a total of 12 points for a td, turn, turn after Q's initial TD. I'd have to look back but I think wright actually had more TD's or at least as many? Final thought, and I'm sure you don't have much to do with this, but Askren's smack talk is getting a little overboard IMO. Good for the fans to build some hype but calling out Dake like that? And his back and forth with Oliver on twitter? Little excessive. This all might have to end with Burroughs taking him out. I'm rooting for Askren to take a loss. But I guess that's the point. All in all, pretty cool.

  15. Did they ever meet after their college rivalry in freestyle? Find it strange that Dave Schultz could destroy Carr and get destroyed by Monday.
  16. Doing some research in anticipation of the release of Foxcatcher. Few questions I have uncovered hopefully someone can shed some light. Was DuPont ever shown to have a motive in what he did? Was the security guard who escorted DuPont to D Schultz's house ever punished? One article describes him sitting next to DuPont in the car as he fired three shots. Seems like he could've stopped him at some point. Who was the better Schultz? Seems to be Mark but you hear more about Dave's career and legend. Mark seemed to be a rare talent and one that should be discussed more in the GOAT talks. After learning more about his career, I'm surprised he's not. Looking forward to this movie in a big way.
  17. Top 10. If he finishes like he's wrestled for the past two seasons (4 really) he is without a doubt in the top 10 all time. We give Dake a pass on his in season losses since he came away with 4 titles but does anyone think Dake is head and shoulders above Ruth? Or Taylor for that matter. I would argue both in my top 10 at least of the last 30-40 years. Assuming they end with their current pace.
  18. Kudos to Metcalf for picking out Taylor giving up 20ish lbs in the process. But damn did Taylor look good in those few TD's. In easy and finished easy twice which is not easy to do against Metcalf regardless of the weight advantage. How has he not taken one from Dake yet?? Amazes me.
  19. When will we have to save wrestling again or is there a chance we get back into the core sports?
  20. Bottom line is 6 weights is not enough. I'd rather see 6-7-5. Might be time to cut ties with Greco, freestyle is the more dynamic and modern of the two and it would make sense not to have to cut out some major stars. The first guy that comes to mind for me is Logan Stieber. He is our brightest prospect IMO and will surely be stuck out of the lineup if these weights hold. The guy this is great for IMO is Oliver.
  21. Yes. There are quite a few 'tweeners now.
  22. Actually pretty good analysis. Who hacked your account?
  23. Cut Greco and add a weight to freestyle. Men's and women's.
  24. Freshman that are .500 during the season and then finish high AA or even NC are still "out of the blue" in my book. Rosholt fits that bill his freshman year. Shane Webster is a big one. Some more: Kirk White, Mark Fee (App st), Maurice Worthy (sr year), Tyler Baer, Ben Askren (frosh yr), Donahoe (title year), Rohn, Tony Davis (some may have known him), Max Askren (frosh yr), and of course Whitmer. Vinson and Larry Quisel (who also came out of nowhere), lost their first match and stormed all the way back for third.
  25. Don't even mind the shot clock, I prefer that to a stalling point. It should just be very clear that one is needed for a wrestler. Every match does not HAVE to have a shot clock and it seems that's where we're headed.
