I'm not sure why the firemans is underutilized by Americans. It's almost like a forgotten hold. And many are "suckers" for it too. The way a lot of these guys defend, the opening is there. Because this TD can easily turn into plus 2 or 4 NF, I have to give guys like Marsteller a higher probability than most would give him at winning an NCAA title. He gets up by 4 or 6, he's going to be hard to beat.

Is this a joke? In what world is Ed Ruth unbelievable at finishing against someone of Hall's talent and ability? Ruth was a good college wrestler, but he was often times very sloppy. I see Hall making him pay for his regular technical and positional errors. Hall would have a lot to work with because Ruth wrestled hard for seven minutes. You aren't taking into account that most of the guys Ruth dominated were overmatched and were not elite talents.

You are putting forth the same flawed argument that people out forth when they talked about Taylor being good enough to beat Dake by major decision. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised, average wrestling knowledge has really taken a significant dive over the past 5-10 years. Too many people who don't understand wrestling are being given jobs and are dumbing down the wrestling population by teaching the wrestlers 2nd-rate-at-best technique.

What a horrible post. Right up there with your "You can't use Retherford and Nolf to prove Cael is the best developer of talent, they don't count".

Don't forget, outside of Zain, Snyder is the only true national champion in college. He's winning world titles while the rest aren't even winning true national championships.

Oftentimes the best wrestlers in the country aren't allowed to compete at the NCAA tournament due to the eligibility rules in college. Ex. I think nearly everyone acknowledges that if Dake, Burroughs, and Dieringer were allowed to compete at 165 in the 2017 NCAA bracket, Vicenzo Joseph wouldn't be the champion.

I have heard this before. Some believe that the "men's" division in sports should be done away with entirely. The argument is that there should be a women's division, and the men's division should become the "Open" division. I loosely follow professional Chess and this seems to be the direction they are going in the U.S. One of the announcers put a lot of emphasis on this point at last year's U.S. Open, correcting those who called the Open tournament the "men's" division. There is a certain logic to it.

I see this as more of a creation of hype than anything else. I don't remember many arguing Gable over Uetake or Hodge after he lost as a senior. The legend grew exponentially after the Olympics and coaching success at Iowa.

Wasn't there a discrepancy between the official clock and the clock displayed on the t.v. in that Hendricks/Churella final?

Your mistake is not considering talent level. It's rather disturbing to see people compare any old highly ranked wrestler to Mark Hall.

Nothing I said is logically fallacious. Just because someone is a higher recruit doesn't mean that you are doing a lesser job of developing talent than taking an unheralded guy to AA status. It all depends on the individuals being compared, also the circumstances.
I believe taking Joseph to a title as a freshman was a better job than taking Bosak to 3rd as a senior considering the circumstances. A senior Bosak was more proven than Joseph at the time. Just because he was projected to do better overall doesn't mean you can dismiss everything else, like timing. Freshman vs senior is relevant in this comparison.

Taking Retherford to the level he is at now is superior to me than what Koll did with Garrett. It's difficult to judge highly ranked wrestlers sometimes because they can't place higher than first place. Garrett had multiple-time-champion talent so I judge him in the same class as Retherford for his last three seasons. He was a far lower quality recruit in terms of rankings, but not in terms of talent. The conversation is more complex than it is usually treated. Ex. I would say what Koll did with Lee is "less impressive" than what he did with Mike Grey. Lee's talent was undeniable. Grey's wasn't. Had he not injured his neck, I think we'd be talking about him a lot more.

It's sad that many of the Iowa regulars left after PSU started winning. I didn't expect them to just pick up their ball and go home. For those of you who weren't around 2005-2010, and especially in 2008-2010, the boards were entirely different then. Iowa fans ruled the board with an iron fist. They complain about Flying Tiger and Tbar, but back then, they had about twenty of those types roaming around here. Looking to start an argument over any perceived slight. The board really went off the deep end when it was seen as "taking undercover cheap shots" to point out Metcalf was not yet a better wrestler than John Smith. They really didn't like when I said Metcalf was not destined for future greatness on the international stage. Or that his "upset" to Caldwell wasn't nearly as comparable to Gable's as many of them were trying to make it. Those were the days.

Another component: He's recognized as the best in a style that is considered the highest level of wrestling on the planet. He's also considered to be the #1 p4p wrestler at that higher level. He's winning against the very best in the WORLD, while everyone else isn't even winning a true NATIONAL championship. A major reason the award was named after Hodge was because he was an undefeated wrestler. He could also be said to be the best wrestler,in his weight class,in the country, without qualification.

Also, the Hodge committee doesn't have a strict way that they interpret the criteria. It can change from year to year.
