Yeah, I don't like watching him, but he keeps winning, so it's hard to say he's either lost a step or should do things differently. He scored zero takedowns on Nolf, but let's see what he looks like in Serbia before suggesting that's super meaningful or more than a strategy that was ultimately quite effective. It's hard to imagine he'll still be at the top of his game at age 33 years old for the 2024 trials and Olympics. Will a then 28 year old Nolf have closed the gap enough to win? Is someone else out there who can catch either of them? (Carr, Deakin, O'Toole, Kharchla, someone else?)

You don’t like watching Dake?  Wow I understand he may not always an offensive juggernaut but sometimes he is. I love watching the dude. Very creative, diverse, explosive. Can’t imagine a wrestling fan not liking watching him. His run to his first world title was spectacular. We are still watching peak Dake. He had one bad match that I’ve seen.

I think Dake wins again next year, 2023 is a coin flip, and Nolf is the Olympic rep in 2024.

Nolf scored one TD. Otherwise he wasn’t very close. Big Nolf fan but I’m not sure what makes you think that. Closing the gap is Waaay different than beating Dake.

    My man..

wrestling is a niche Olympic sport with maybe, MAYBE 8 digits of funding across all mediums and and sources across the country.. you gotta chill on Flo. I hate the state of multimedia in wrestling just as much as you, but we’re not gonna get ESPN coverage. It just ain’t gonna happen. Your hate for Flo is weird to the point that I sometimes wonder if I’m missing out on some sort of sarcasm or facetiousness.

If Flo has anything more than an Associate Producer getting paid ~60K that’s taking on the task of uploading side footage for Final X while still doing their regular job, I’d be surprised. Just skim the video and get quotes to post to Facebook and vibe.

Didn’t Flo alone get a couple rounds of 8 digit venture capital funding? I know in 2019 Flo got 47 million. Not that’s for Flo sports not just wrestling but that’s nothing to sneeze at.

  4. Taylor is the man. Love the fact that he put it right back on the line after he won the Olympics especially against a competitor as tough as Yazdani.  He won that Olympic title by the skin of his teeth so he knew it was a risk but he’s a competitor. He has to be injured right?  Why hasn’t he competed?  Seems to me size wise Hall is perfect for Zahid. Opposite is true of Taylor.

Yes he could cut a bit more but for what?
Zahid can beat everyone but Yaz, DT, Russians....
79kg was brutal (he wasn't navigating that either... and not sniffing JB)
    Never making 74kg

He was WTT Runner up to a World Medal quality wrestler, good achievement.
What more could he hope for

I know he was bigger and it’s practice but JB has said that Mark has beaten him several times in simulation matches.

I think his problem is he just doesn’t generate enough offense. He’s always been so good defensively. Zahid is constantly on his offense or setting it up. Also don’t think he has a good natural gas tank which contributes to his lack of offense. He’s a fantastic coach. I went to PSU camps for several years while he was there and he was my favorite clinician and I saw them all there.

It's that time of year, again: JO comes up short, and I try to figure out why. Maybe I'm just a fan that keeps hoping for some breakthrough that's not in the cards.

You know what his style reminds me of? Super-hero/action-movie fights. When  Hulk and Thor fight, they both close the distance and then proceed to kick, punch, throw the other across the screen and chase em down to do the exact same thing again. Why not just grab the dude, ground n pound, and strangle them?

JO does something similar: he closes the gap and then does a two-arm shove. Repeat.

IDK I also root for the Washington Football Team. Just a frustrated fan.

Where did that 2 arm shove come from?  I seem to remember him employing it during his matches with Pico as a way to thwart his pressure.  Maybe I’m wrong but around that time he added it to his game. Do other wrestlers do that?  I know Burroughs does it occasionally but It’s not as pronounced and I can’t think of many others.

John Smith says his nephew JT Realmuto could’ve been an NCAA champ

Phillies fan here and watching pre game the other day, guy was talking about how JT was a former wrestler and that he can deal with the pain because wrestlers are known to be a little psycho and he gave the old whirly bird by his temple. I got a kick out of it.  JT is a beast.

I'm always cautious when claiming that a new medium is radically different than older media that received the same "societal cancer" tag. Poetry (Plato), Elizabethan/Jacobean drama (William Prynne), novels (poets), TV (Theodor Adorno), film, comic books, rock n roll (Allen Bloom), rap (Tipper Gore), video games (Joe Lieberman) -- all marked the end of civilization.  But, man, I must be getting old bc I have become a pearl clutcher. Social media -- admittedly, an absurdly vague term -- seem to have destroyed our attention spans and enfeebled our boredom thresholds. The iphone was the gun in our hand, but the pandemic put one in the chamber. Our poor kids have trouble watching a 30-min sitcom. Ohhh the kids!!! I hate myself.

I’m with you, but this feels different. This is something in your pocket 24/7 that gives you instantaneous feedback whether good or oftentimes bad. None of those things, that I know of, we’re blamed for causing, or at least greatly increasing, anxiety and depression.  Yianni is smart beyond his years.

  9. The NYAC tournament was renamed the Bill Farrell and then they move it to Iowa?  Does anyone know the long term status of this tournament?  The tournament is terrific at the NYAC. Nothing like it. Right there mat side with the athletes warming up.  Was top notch with Russians, Japanese etc. Was one of my yearly destinations. Please bring it back!!!

  10. PSU will win every semi aside from Kerkvliet. RBY will beat Desanto worse than he has, Woods is tough but Lee is next level. Have you watched his freestyle match vs Yianni?   Starocci is also a class above.  I’m a Hidlay fan but Brooks is better.  Dean might lose in the finals but he’s not losing to Hoffman the freaking 21 seed.

I don't mean this to sound bad against JB, as he's iconic in USA Wrestling. But what could he possibly offer as a coach in both freestyle and folkstyle? His "technique " isn't quite as an elite Wrestler, per se. His explosiveness and freak athleticism is not the most teachable attribute.

Was he an amazing top wrestler in Folkstyle? How about his hand fighting? Did he turn well?

In free, how was his par terre? How was his technique when not allowed space? Did he even have an ankle pick? A HC? How well could he finish if it wasn't his infamous blast?

I just don't understand the possibility of him being an elite coach. Granted, he'll get recruits no matter where he goes, if he decides to. I just don't see the way he dominated to translation as an elite coach.

Is this a joke?  How many JB matches have you watched the last 5 years?  How about his hand fighting?
