OldGrappler got a reaction from GranbyTroll in Gabe Dean
I got a big kick out of his story about having pretended to have been paralyzed after he lost to a girl in one of his first matches in grade school.  And his parents calling him out on it.

You've hit the simple truths, which are so very hard to execute.

The best wrestling recruits are coveted by all your competitors.  Winning in the competition for them, and identifying the "sleepers" is just damned hard, unglamorous, humbling work.

Believing in the kids first is the way to get them to believe in themselves, but it takes leaps of faith sometimes, and tremoundous patience.

The clubs are finally getting as good as the Carr family basement back in Erie four decades ago.  :)

I'll confess I hadn't watched any sumo recently, and had never heard of this guy.

Very entertaining to watch.  He seems to have radar in his feet to be able to stand right on the ring and execute throws and pass-by moves without stepping out first.  I suppose some of that happens because we're watching highlights and not all of his career.   But very impressive.

I watched this yesterday and enjoyed it much more than the professional actor version, or even the Prince of Pennsylvania 30 for 30 version.

This one is entirely clips of life at Foxcatcher, and interviews with Strobel, Humphries, Jackson, and and others.....especially Nancy Schultz.... who were there at the time.   It's much more of a wrestling insider's version.

    I recommend it.

    Just watched it.

I thought it was a much more informative account of what happened and what led to Dave Schultz's death.   It did a good job of focusing on Dupont's mental illness.  Lots of first hand comments from wrestlers who were there.

You're 99% there.  Lots of people think running is the oldest sport, but haven't thought it through the way you have, albeit coming up just short. :)

Some of the comments above seem inaccurate.  Here's another take from a not-unbiased source that at least corrects some of the incorrect points, I believe.

It has links to other articles about the issue in question.

In the end, my guess is that there was sentiment to make a change and perhaps this helped push it along.  Good luck to Coleman Scott.  Always rooting for WPIAL boys.

I agree on Fehrs, and that article in the link is quite good.

I was at Kent State that year to see my first nationals as a hs senior, and the description of the match is spot on.   The picture in the article is one of my favorite all-time photographs and speaks volumes about wrestling as a sport and what it means to wrestle.

Its good news, but the release that talks about it says that they're raising the student charges to pay for keeping wrestling.  The reality is that the increased fees are to pay for lacrosse.

I'm looking forward to seeing Kevin Jack against Steiber this evening.  Steiber is likely far too much for him, as he apparently is for everyone else.

The Duke 197 seems like he's a pretty good story too.

    NJDan,

It differs in that Realbuto was awarded what turned out to be the "tying" takedown, which can only have been a takedown if Miller had escaped.   If Miler never escaped, then Realbuto didn't have a tying takedown and Miller won.  If Miller did escape, then he still won, but the escape was either never signaled by the ref, or not recorded by the scorer.

I'm not impressed with the NCAAs handling of it, and I think labeling it a punt is probably the nicest thing that can be said about it.  My sense is that the committee isn't comfortable with their power to reverse the "apparent" outcome of a match, and were looking for some cover for not acting.  I can understand that feeling, but the outcome in this case doesn't seem right.

OldGrappler got a reaction from leshismore in Maybe I was wrong and Jack can wrestle a little
Jack has been very tough for a long time.  Being from CT, there is not a lot of natural competition for him, and he's had to go to Eastern States and the summer stuff at Super 32 to get exposure to the upper level kids.

It was always impressive to me that, even when he lost to kids from NY or PA, none of them could run over him.  They all had some serious trouble with him, and that was despite the fact that, IMO, he was physically not mature.....which I think he still is.  Flo has some old video of him, and you can see that his style is still the same.

He has a mat presence that reminds me some of Coleman Scott.  He's long, and he does a good job of keeping the other guy from running over him, and he has a remarkably quick low single shot that he seems to have a terrific instinct about when to shoot.

Jack only cracked the NCState lineup in the last three duals, and he beat two ranked wrestlers then.  This kind of a run can only bring a smile to your face.
