  1. Gambrall was the logical choice. tough to tell loft house to go out and stay off your back one day and then sell him on the fact that he can win nationals the next. same at 149. Brands is sneaky smart like that. PSU is skunked at 133/141 now

I have to agree that Brands does some smart moves. I didn't think of it that way GB, but, you make a great point. Psychologically, telling your 149 & 184 pound starters to not try to win, but, try to avoid a pin, could really hamper their confidence. That is unique strategy, and I like it. I'm in the minority among PSU fans, but, I actually like and respect Brands. His style couldn't be more opposite of Cael's, but, there is definitely room for both to succeed.

I agree with you on the "master psychologist" (my words) part, but for a different reason. I think TB believed that BG and GG would do better than Kelly and Lofthouse, last nite. I also think TB is opening the door to give GG a chance to get back in the lineup at 184, after everyone had more or less written GG off. I guess only time will tell.

  2. I have no team that I root for, I just enjoy great wrestling.

So I will give credit where credit is due.

It's starting to look like this MAY be Brands best coaching job since he has been at Iowa. His team is certainly improving every match. Can not imagine they can catch PSU but they may get close if they keep improving by the leaps they have been taking.

Have to agree (although I am not counting them out yet).....especially when you look at some of the holes in their lineup from earlier this year......have a good feeling about Moore (at 165) and Burak (at 197) stepping up to the plate in March. We should actually get a pretty good picture of where things are by the end of this week. From my standpoint, looks like 5 matches each if you wrestle them on paper....so it should come down to upsets and bonus points. Most critical match is probably 174, Brown vs, Evans.

  3. #1 reason - financial support. You can break it down anyway you want to but without 9.9 scholarships and money to fund at least 3 paid coaches and a system to get a volunteer coach funded, everything else is moot.

I don't believe any school in CA has 9.9 scholarships. Most don't fund more than 1 coach. I know Cal Poly has to fund-raise for their head assistant coach.

Bring back Fresno State, UCLA, Cal, and USC. Give them a full paid staff and 9.9 scholarships and you'd see California schools consistently in the Top 10, if not higher. Heck, give Stanford 9.9 scholarships and it wouldn't take long before they consistently were a Top 10 team.

not sure USC ever had a team to begin with.....just club status going back to pre title IX. Probably more realistic to see Stanford get 9.9 scholarships before seeing the other schools you mentioned bringing back wrestling any time soon.

  4. this is not about the altons

i figured sitting the scuffle and a dual or two was more then fair for simply drinking during the season but according to some cael decided to suspend them for 30 days

so what does suspended mean? i always figured they would be allowed to train with the team so it sounded like they wouldnt be able to compete but now they are competing the whole thing seems so odd. it is as if cael wants them to keep getting wins and mat time but wanted to make it look like he was being firm and making a statement.

so what is the penalty? they went to the scuffle to watch so they just didnt compete will they travel to purdue too? can they just not wrestle in a scored team event? if that is the case it is more of a penalty for the fans and team than it is for them though the team will win without them since their backups are solid

my point is simply there has been no statement yet it was talked about being a suspension so what are they suspended from if they are still wrestling official matches against other college wrestlers?

    wire is right

from what I was told through a fairly reliable source is that they weighed in for the Scuffle, and then they sat. That seems like punishment enough!

  5. I guess I better acknowledge that I was initially talking about the voices that could be heard on air. I would guess that they were not the commentators but a couple men sitting close that could be heard. They did seem to be in the know since they made many references such as, "when I talked to Gable", or "Cael said" etc. Sorry, I didn't mean to demean the commentators, I just assumed it was them talking at the time. Thinking back, these two never addressed any of the matches during that time period. If it was media personnel, like posted above, it was very unprofessional.

not exactly sure of why this is "very unprofessional", as it seems as though they were simply having a private conversation. What am I missing here!

  6. Before anyone is quick to jump on anyone here and immediately bring negativity to this thread, I must say that I have no clue how reliable any of these sources are. But there are rumblings that they are looking to possibly transfer to either Clarion or back home to Lock Haven?

Anyone have anything on this or likely a pile of crap?

Do you realize that their hometown, Mill Hall, is only 35 miles from Penn State? That being said, they aren't the brightest light bulbs in the shed... I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a Martellotti.

My boys are not going anywhere. The powers that be (National Champ coaches and Olympic Gold Medalist) have made peace with this and set some strict rules along with a punishment beyond what you see or hear - they are being punished beyond what you know. My boys have their work cut out for them now - trust me... They have to abide or they are done completely and no transfer will be allowed. They love Cael, Cody and Casey and know they let everyone down. But if I could tell everyone here the true story I guarantee they would be astonished as to how this has happened. It has been blown way out of proportion. They were warned previously about this trouble and the female involved. I think now they understand there are consequences to be dealt with. I wish so bad I was back in LBNY and not in this small town..... But there GPA is pretty good lu-alum so I don't know who you are - like most you hide behind an internet name and cower as a coward does when laying blame and insults on two young boys who have done so much community service and help with special olympics, visited sick kids in the hospital and done many clinics for free at youth clubs. Why do so many in our sport hate when we are struggling a great deal on a collegiate level. I can only think but one thing - YOU HAVE NO IDEA AT ALL ABOUT THIS SPORT AND THE GREAT PEOPLE INVOLVED AT ALL LEVELS. Go ahead now and attack back - but I dare you to email your real name and address at altonmortgage@gmail.com Maybe then we can discuss this matter face to face at some wrestling tournament in the future.

Neal......I believe the majority of the wrestling community sees this incident as a simple mistake that your sons made.....the type that is often associated with people in their age group. It is also seen as something that some folks have taken the opportunity to blow things way out of proportion on the basis of little or no information. There will always be those that are quick to stir things up, unnecessarily. These are usually the type of folks that are not even worth responding to, and that is why (as much as I appreciate your post), you need not have gone through the effort!

  7. thanks :-)

  8. Rutgers is a sleeping giant. Just needs the right coach and it should become a top 10 power perennially imo. With them moving to the Big 10, it'll probably become a high profile and coveted job. Maybe Perry goes back East?

Mark Perry to the Big 10 via Rutgers makes perfect sense to me.

Surprised no one is mentioning Pritzlaff as a possible replacement, as he is from New Jersey.

  9. 1. No, they don't.

    2. It doesn't matter if they do, only one of them can wrestle 125 for the Hawkeyes.

I'm as excited as anyone by the eye-opening result by Clark, but I would still favor Delgado in a rematch. A guy in season wrestling a true freshman may have been taking it a little lightly, who knows? It could end p being that Cory Clark is just the second coming of McDonough, but I think we should see some repeated results to verify that.

didn't Clark recently lose to McDonough in SV......I think it looks like he is the real deal!

  10. JT#1's connections to the Hawkeyes got him the inside scoop. He probably thinks its Alger (shakes head)

Oh, I just got through telling someone who I thought it might be based on who I was told that it was, and you can rest assure it was not Royce Alger.

FWIW I asked Alger if it was him, and his response leads me to believe that it probably is not!

  11. JT1 is setting the trap.

Whoever is mudflap will surely PM JT1 telling him... "No, I don't give you permission." -signed Dan Gable

Then JT1 will really know the true identity.

not sure you are suggesting its Gable, but if you are I don't think so. Still not sure whether its Alger or not (pure speculation on my part), or another thought is Lewboo (also pure speculation).

  12. Yes, I have some crow to eat. I've been critical of Dom Bradley's ability to score bonus points (he only had seven bonus point victories two years ago, and none of them against guys that most of us on the message boards have heard of...in fact, I don't remember a single name of them off the top of my head), and he's made it to the semis with bonus points in each of his first three matches. Kudos to Dom, and again, I take responsibility for calling myself out.

maybe he just got tired of reading your posts! :-)
