1. Why did he not get the ISU job when Dr. Nichols retired?
Why did he not get the ISU job when Dr. Nichols retired?

Gibbons supposedly shined at the interview, and the administration apparently took the young energetic guy over the older experienced.

that is exactly the same thing I had heard.

  2. FWIW Max Soria may not have won a state title, but I believe his semi-final loss at state was a forfeit to his twin brother (that was pre determined by a coin toss). His brother went on to win state. Please correct me if I am wrong.

  3. What's up doc? These guys are already calling stall on dake. I don't know where DT, the scoring machine, was for that 9 minute match.

Looks like Dake is in Taylor's head, and I have a hard time believing Taylor will beat him until he gets him out of his head. In order to beat Dake Taylor needs to wrestle his own match the same way he wrestles all his other opponents. JMHO.

  5. won't make a prediction unless I can find a coin.......but fwiw it seems as though all the pressure of this match is on DT......while I do not think Dake feels any of the same pressures. At least that is my impression from watching the interview of DT. Anyhow we will all find out in a few hours. Fortunately for me I will get to see this one in person. Cannot ask for anything more. :-)

  6. This is the reason I bought the ticket. I will NOT go and probably give the tickets away. I would be upset but that is just how it goes.

According to the NWCA site on FB, there is no truth to the rumor that DT was injured and will not be wrestling.

Dang it, I just sold my block of tickets to Stub Hub. That's the troof.

a very sneaky way to get some tickets cheap! :-)

  7. I don't know why Zadick was let go either, and only insiders will really know. Of course, everyone in Iowa considers themselves an insider because they once talked to Gable. However, to me, seeing Zadick in the Iowa corner was a trademark of the Hawkeyes program.

I have nothing against the people they brought in to replace him (Morningstar?) but for me Zadick will be missed with Iowa. That being said, I sometimes cheered against him when he and Brands did jumping jacks in the corner during a match, but it was that tradition I loved to see and observe.

This is just from a pure fan standpoint. It has nothing to do with coaching ability, what's best for the team, what she said, what this person did, he said she said etc.

What I am looking forward to most is - where will Zadick end up next? Will he coach again? Where?

    Wrestle!

I think it was just an obvious decision that needed to be made......seems like the Hawks were tougher at the lower weights and needed more coaching help at the upper weights. There are so many coaches allowed under NCAA rules, and someone (other than Tom and Terry) needed to be let go. I am pretty certain that this is all there is to it, although I have no inside information. Also, fairly sure Zadick will be picked up by another DI program before we know it. Bob M

  8. When they talk about GREATS many forget about Carl Adams- when I talk about GREATs he is one of the first that comes to mind.Watched him in High School and remember many of his achievements as a wrestler. 2X NCAA Champ/ 3X USA FS Champ and named by Sports Illustrated as the " Middle weight of the Decade".He wrestled in a time that IMO this was forgotten- when things were just ROUGH- competition was DEEP- and wrestling talent was INCREDIBLE . A time forgotten and an arena many have NEVER seen.

Tip my hat to Mr Carl Adams !!!

I have to agree....but as great as he was, Carl Adams really came into his own as a senior in high school, when he won state. Prior to that Adams did not place in state as a sophomore and junior and their was another athlete, Craig Scholl from neighboring Lindenhurst high school that was at least as good. In fact the two of these great warriors each won 2 out of 4 matches against each other, except Adams always won the more important match ups. Unfortunately for Scholl he had a debilitating shoulder injury he was never able to fully overcome.

  9. Hold on a second.....Willie Gadson is from Suffolk County, NY! :-)

I don't know thing one about the long history of Black Hawk county in Iowa (where I live), but I would suspect that we are almost second to none in terms of producing big name wrestlers. Just off of the top of my head, I'll take a stab at names that I know for sure, knowing full well that I'm leaving out 21,017 other big names.

    Dan Gable

    Chuck Yagla

    Mack Reiter

    Jim Gibbons

    Joe Gibbons

    Darryl Weber

    Jim Miller

    Willie Gadson

    Mike VanAarsdale

    Dale Anderson

    Tolly Thompson

    Joel Greenlee

I think there are others like Rich Binek (NCAA champ, Ia St.).

  11. Thanks for your thoughts, JC. However, I have already sent out the e-mail and figured it best that I keep it short, since Coach Osborne probably receives a great deal of correspondence every day. However, I will say that I have concluded that TA is in fact an "enemy" of the sport. I also state this is just my opinion and only suggest that Coach Osborne do his own homework before making any recommendations. Hopefully, he will believe there are no hidden agenda's or personal animosity. What is probably most important, though is that everyone who feels the same way also give their thoughts to Coach Osborne, since I believe there is a consensus of opinion on this BB that TA in fact an "enemy" of our sport.

    RPKD:

My opinion: I think you (and others) should summarize the values of a wrestling program, how the sport can be made stronger and would do well to become more visible. And shortly discuss how numerous D1 programs have been dropped, while expressing your concern that it does not happen at Nebraska.

To basically campaign against a single individual, painting him as your enemy, seems suspect. And it could backfire. What if what he did at one school might seem like a good thing to eventually do at Nebraska as well?

Those are just my thoughts. You have probably already sent your e-mail.

    JC

  12. Here is my contribution, in the hopes that Trev Alberts is not named successor to Coach Osborne. Hope other members of this BB will follow suit, as my e-mail will not be enough. Please send to Mr. Osborne's assistant at ahackbart@huskers.com

    Hello Ms. Hackbart,

I would greatly appreciate it if you you kindly forward this e-mail on to Coach Osborne. Thanking you in advance for your help. -

    Hi Coach Osborne,

First of all, best wishes for your future retirement as I have no doubt you have earned it. As I am sure you know during the past 12 years two former Nebraska wrestlers have won GOLD MEDALS in the Olympic games. This is in addition to at least one SILVER MEDAL I can immediately recall, as well as countless other ALL AMERICAN honors and other accolades. However, I am concerned that these wrestling opportunities may no longer exist if Trev Alberts is appointed as your successor.

Although I do not know Mr. Alberts, personally, I can say from my familiarity with his dropping of the UNO wrestling program that I believe Mr. Alberts is not the best available candidate for this position. Rather than going into a long discussion for my reasons, I have simply copied and pasted the following message that I recently posted on one of the college wrestling bulletin boards. Although this (posting) represents my opinion, I am urging that you to at least look into the veracity of this perception, before you decide whether you wish to support Mr. Alberts as your successor. I believe that if my perceptions are in fact accurate that Mr. Alberts will inevitably do a disservice to the University of Nebraska, should be be appointed as AD. Thanking you in advance for your consideration in this matter.

    Respectfully,

    Bob Mayeri

Here....please read the above link which explains why TA dropped football and wrestling. For those of you that need a quick summary....football was dropped to facilitate the move to Division I. That was a strategic business decision, which is understandable. Moving to Division I will allow UNO to participate in March Madness, which obviously has a huge upside. However, dropping wrestling seemed like a move that was not critical to this process and that TA intends to replace it with soccer and golf. TA's purported reason was that the new DI conference for UNO did not support wrestling. HOWEVER, I believe everyone on this BB knows that the UNO wrestling team could have applied for and been accepted as an affiliate member in a variety of DI conferences, and the problem would have easily been solved. In fact it would have probably been less expensive than paying severance to the wrestling coaches and honoring scholarships. SO....when I look at this situation, coupled with the successful track record of UNO's wrestling program, I can only conclude that Trev Alberts HATES our sport!

  14. ..I can't see how or why Nebraska would be willing to drop wrestling especially after having a World and Olympic Champion recently.

he already dropped a program the nite they won an NCAA team title.....if you don't think he would like to up the ante.....I have some swampland I would like to sell you. :-(

  15. Perhaps some of TA's past accomplishments or lack thereof need to be communicated to the Board of Trustees, so that they do not make the same mistakes made by the UNO Trustees. From my recollection, his judgement leaves something to be desired and he is not exactly the type of individual anyone would want administering a budget the size of Nebraska's. This is probably an opportunity for the wrestling community to be proactive. However, might I suggest that this be done in an objective, thoughtful manner and that we keep the emotions and anger out of the discussion.
