Voice_of_the_Quakers got a reaction from spladle08 in Barraclough, Terrell ...PSU...So impressed
What impresses me about Barraclough is what impresses me about PSU in general.  We've seen very good teams, Iowa included, send out backups this year due to injuries and COVID who look unbelievably overmatched at the D-I level.  PSU sits/loses a starter, up steps the next guy, and, no matter whether you've heard of him, he performs.  It's a credit to their roster management,  development of the kids on campus, the buy-in from his wrestlers into the mission of the program, and to whatever else you want to point.

I think most of Penn's team withdrew from school as well.
Regardless of your athletic status at an Ivy League school, I would have a hard time justifying $65K-$70K for an entirely online year from a cost/benefit perspective.  Much better in my mind to pick up some work experience with the connections the alumni base offers.  Still would leave more than enough time to keep up your training.  Hopefully, everyone has been taking full advantage of what became their "gap year".

Color me stunned.  Guessing the announcement about cancelling the Spring 2021 sports season is right around the corner.

    I've always thought:
    1) High school sports should be about participation
    2) College sports should be about competition
    3) Professional sports, including the Olympics, should be most simply about winning

I would hope the coming correction in college sports does not impact the high schools, where the mission of sports should be very different.

So while the declaration may have been more aptly named, maybe it’s time for all of us to let go of our outrage at people with different points of view (anyone familiar with the scientific method and medical research knows that there is no one single correct viewpoint on such amorphous phenomena as epidemics—despite the phrase I’m hearing often these days that “the Science says…” as if there’s one Science that definitively knows all). Perhaps it’s time as ordinary citizens to ask ourselves: If we let go of the fear and politicizing and demonizing associated with this current situation—which has so tragically divided us and diminished open-minded conversation—what course of action will support the greatest well-being for the greatest number? Could it be possible that a continued lockdown may not be the more humane and caring choice?

Lee Kemp is the best and most physically gifted wrestler I ever personally saw wrestle.
But, as we continue this conversation, I would encourage participants to look beyond body type when describing "physically" gifted.  Bruce Baumgartner was accurately described as a moving brick wall, but does not have the "look" of Alexander Karelin.

An over reaction to this threat leading to economic destruction and misery could kill way more people (lots of small businesses, credit lines, jobs at risk).  Question is, what’s the right balance.
And to the point above, I was wondering who is footing the bill for the venue and whether they will try to move to smaller venue.  Likely too late to shift something so big.
This is going to be weird, but I guess much like many UWW events ... big matches, empty house.

It has been my experience that if your son first figures out:
    1) what he wants to study
    2) how far away he is willing to live from home
    3) what type of campus environment he wants - large or small school, big city/small town/something in between, etc.
the wrestling will take care of itself.

I really don't like making world picks and picking against guys I really want to win. Do you go conservative and pick more realistically or do you pick with your heart, hoping for the best? I'm in a different role with this since I'm hired by UWW to announce, so there's the whole "man, this American is calling it way too much for the Americans," thing I've got to be aware of.
In the case of USAW staff, it's your country (Rather than a school), there's a deep emotional tie at this level. When I was working at USAW, our mood lived and died with the team. If we had a bad day, we might have less work, but we got dejected. When we win medals, we get hustling and it raises the whole level of effort from the media staff.

I thought my picks were rational and fair, but I've definitely thrown some homer calls out there in the past. Burroughs never lets me forget I went Tsargush in 2011, because a returning champ isn't supposed to get beat by a first-timer.

    Gary going 7 ... stunning. I figured he'd go 8.

By traditional measures, his senior year was his 4th year at Rutgers, during which he earned his 3rd AA.  He missed his 5th year, which we could also call his 2nd senior year.  Now, he gets to have a 3rd senior year.  We're approaching Blutarski territory, here.
