  1. ESCAPE THE ROCK FIELD SET FOR 2016

“ETR WRESTLING” is proud to present the 11th annual Escape the Rock Wrestling Tournament (the 10th as an individual event), which will bring together 44 teams on Saturday & Sunday, January 16 & 17, 2016 at Council Rock South High School in Holland, PA. Some top teams and individuals from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts and West Virginia will be looking to take top honors.

The 2015 Escape the Rock Tournament was another outstanding showcase of talent, which included 20 State/Nat Prep champions, 114 State/Nat Prep medalists and 189 qualifiers. Bethlehem Catholic became the first three-time team champion, while Solanco’s Bo Spiller and BECA’s Andrew Dunn & Jake Riegel each earned their second ETR belt. Georgetown Prep’s Eric Hong grabbed OW honors by completely dominating the field at 132 with a major decision and three falls.

The ETR alumni list of successful college wrestlers also continues to grow. There have been two NCAA D1 National Champions who competed at ETR, as well as twenty-five D1 All-Americans and seventy-five D1 national qualifiers. There have also been 12 National Champions in other collegiate divisions, with 33 All-Americans.

The 2016 ETR field looks to be another strong contingent of quality teams, with plenty of depth in competition. Teams scheduled to compete in 2016 include:

*7 teams that were nationally ranked in 2014-15

*8 teams that competed in the PIAA State Dual Championships

*3 of the top 10, 5 of the top 12, 8 of the top 20 from the PIAA AAA State Tournament

*4 of the top 15 from the PIAA AA State Tournament

*1 Virginia State Champion and 5 teams that finished Top 5 at VA State Tournaments

*New Jersey Group 1 State Runner Up

    *New York Catholic State Champion

The list of teams making their first appearance at Escape the Rock in 2016 is headlined by our first ever representative from PIAA District 7, Belle Vernon (#38 in Intermat's final 2015 HS Rankings) and New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep (#37 in Intermat's final 2015 HS Rankings and #5 in NJ by Star Ledger/NJ.com). Other ETR first timers from PA – Huntingdon, Lower Dauphin and Mariana Bracetti Academy; from NJ - Southern Regional and Collingswood; from VA - Broad Run, Powhatan and Hayfield; and our first ever entry from Massachusetts – Burlington.

  2. “ETR WRESTLING” is proud to present the 10th annual Escape the Rock Wrestling Tournament (the 9th as an individual event), which will bring together 39 teams on Saturday & Sunday, January 17 & 18, 2015 at Council Rock South High School in Holland, PA. Some top teams and individuals from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New York and West Virginia will be looking to take top honors.

The 2014 Escape the Rock Tournament proved to be the best to date. Highlights start with an appearance by Jordan Burroughs, as he presented awards for some weight classes and also took time to pose for pictures, sign autographs and shoot some t-shirts to fans in the stands. He showed why he is not only the best wrestler in the world, but an outstanding young man and a great ambassador of our sport. Thanks to Flips Wrestling for making that happen! The competition was absolutely stellar and featured 23 State/National Prep Champions, 99 state place winners, 125 state qualifiers and 17 national prep tournament place winners! Team post season accolades were also abundant, with nine teams that finished in the top 17 at the 2014 PIAA State Tournaments, including AA state champion (Bethlehem Catholic), the Delaware State Champion (Smyrna) and Runner-up (Caesar Rodney), plus two Virginia State Champion teams (JW Robinson and Hanover) and three more that finished in the top 7 (Colonial Forge, Forest Park and New Kent). Paulsboro was the runner-up at the NJ state dual tournament and Blair Academy was runner-up at the national prep tournament.

On the mat, perennial national power Blair Academy showed their team strength in making their first appearance at ETR and dominated the field in winning the team title. Thomas Haines completed an historical run to become the first ever, 4-time ETR Champion, enroute to also winning his fourth PIAA State title. There were several strong weight classes that stood out. Blair’s Charles Tucker survived a gauntlet at 120, which had five nationally ranked wrestlers, by beating three of them to earn OW honors. 106 also proved to be very deep and saw eventual PIAA State Champion, Jake Riegel from Bethlehem Catholic come out on top of a weight that included eleven state medalists, plus a national prep place winner. The 126lb final was a rematch from the Beast, where Zeke Moisey and Matt Kolodzik waged another epic battle, with Moisey again getting a hard fought victory. Solanco’s Bo Spiller edged out teammate Haines by just 15 seconds for the most falls award.

Another positive element of ETR is the incorporation of a charity component into the event, which we have done since 2009. This year, we were very happy to donate $2,000 to Beat the Streets – Philadelphia.

The 2015 field looks to be another step up in the quality and depth of competition. Wrestlers expected to compete include 12 State/Nat Prep champions, 27 finalists, 65 medalists and 111 qualifiers. There are also 10 Junior State Champs scheduled to participate as freshman next year. The event will feature 11 teams that finished in the top 17 at the 2013 PIAA State Tournaments, including the PIAA AA State Champion; the Delaware State Champion; a New Jersey State Champion and two runners up, plus two Virginia State Champions and two additional VA teams that were in the top 3 in their state tournaments. Among teams making their first appearance at ETR will be long time PA District 3 power Cumberland Valley, two of New Jersey’s best in High Point and Hanover Park, along with our first ever entries from New York (St. Anthony’s) and West Virginia (Musselman). Adding to an already strong PA District 11 contingent is Stroudsburg and Bethlehem Liberty. Heading up a good group of prep teams is Malvern Prep, as they make their return to ETR, while new preps to ETR - Georgetown Prep, St. Paul’s and Phelps School - will each bring some talented wrestlers. Other first timers include PA’s Exeter and Berlin Brothersvalley. Battlefield, VA also returns to ETR after previously competing in 2007 and 2008.

  5. I need a Pa guy to refresh my memory. Wasn't that the year Josh Oliver lost his first round match, threw his headgear and his team penalty point cost them the state title. I was there that year and saw him do it, remember thinking it might come back and cost the team. Hope I have the right year.
I know definitively that CR South and Easton both lost a team point for head gear tosses. I think that Connellsville may have lost a point, too (not positive, though).
