What multiple class states fail to realize is that in states like NJ with one class or PA with two, district and region titles take on greater significance. If you’ve wrestled in NJ you know that a region title means something. In this day and age it’s pretty easy for college coaches to know the same.

I don't know. Fresno is more centered geographically but Bakersfield is closer to the more populated Los Angeles metro area than is Fresno. If it was in Fresno, maybe fewer people from southern California would go the extra 110 miles to get there. But Fresno is closer to the Bay Area and Sacramento area so more of those folks would likely make the trip to Fresno. My guess is that attendance wouldn't change dramatically if that was the only change.

Some kids just want to go out of state. Rutgers is in the process of building a new wrestling facility. Slowly things are improving. Not fast enough for some but progress continues.

Rutgers is a better job than Wisconsin if you are trying to win championships.  The number of good recruits in New Jersey is so much higher than Wisconsin.

Congratulations to both Barry Davis and his family.  He get's to retire after 25 years of doing what he loved and he will draw a pension from the State Of Wisconsin for the rest of his life.  Very few people today will receive a defined pension plan and they are so much better than any 401K, IRA, Roth IRA, etc...

For high school kids that want to do well it the state tournament I began suggesting the following about 5 years ago and it has worked very well.  Lift 4 days per week during the off season and 3 days per week during the season on a special program that we developed with the help of an NFL strength coach.  Eat very healthy during the season but during the offseason eat mostly what you enjoy.  After the high school season practice begins weigh yourself 3X per day (Morning before you eat, before practice and after practice) and begin to eat HEALTHY DIET.  Lower your carbs, no refined sugars and no soda.  After 3-4 weeks of hard practice and a healthy diet you may cut 5-10 pounds. What I have observed is that it is a long season and high school kids that cut large amounts of weight do very well at the beginning of the season but they seem to fade the last two or three weeks of the season.  With college kids that cut large amounts of weight I have noticed they have trouble staying healthy and they fight injuries and sickness during the season unless they take some time off during the season.  The college season is such a grind that I like to see the kids enter the conference tournament with having competed in about 25 matches.  If I were a college coach I would probably give each starter 2 weeks off sometime during the season where they were not allowed in the wrestling room.  They would lift and take some long runs but when they return the mind would be fresh.

That's because, to a point, more classes means more money. Many (most, all?) state associations are worried about the green stuff going into their pocketbooks, and not the best interests of the children.

For individual sports (track & field, tennis, golf, wrestling, etc...) no state should have more than one champion.

The only reason I like more placers and fewer regions is the championship placement is 8 so having at least that many from each region assumes the 5th place guy from an extremely tough region is not excluded over a 4th place guy from an extremely weak region. If the regions were balanced in both numbers and competitiveness I'd be OK with what you suggest. Single day tournament and the travel distances could be reduced.

The wrestler must not be allowed to make weight and then take a medical forfeit.  The wrestler must make weight and actually compete in the tournament without ANY TYPE of forfeit taking place.  What happened last season is totally unacceptable and the people voting to award the wildcards should also be held accountable.  They could have told the PSU staff that they were not going to award NS a wildcard.  I am also disappointed in the Big10 and NCAA for not addressing this issue during the offseason.  It's truly not in the best interest of the sport for this to take place.  Does anyone today have ethics?

IMO the NCAA should not allow wrestlers the option of sitting out  the qualifier and then accepting a wildcard into the NCAA tournament.  Injuries are part of the sport and if a wrestler is not healthy enough to compete in the qualifier they should in no way be given a wildcard.  What happened last season with Surriano is unacceptable and only prevented another wrestler the opportunity to attend the big dance.

Penn State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, and Ohio State dominate 95% of all Division I teams.  I like seeing programs like Rutgers, Wyoming, Carolina, etc., making some positive moves.  If in the next few recruiting cycles they can become a consistent top 10 team and maybe bust the top 5, put up 3-4 All-Americans a year, then incredible job by them. JMHO

Many thoughts continue to run through my head regarding a student athlete taking a redshirt year.
    1.  I remember when freshmen were not eligible to compete & for most freshmen that would probably still be a good idea
    2.  The freshmen of today are older due to being held back/redshirted in grade school, middle school or high school and should be more mature
    3.  In the past I have felt that it was best to redshirt the sophomore season.  Compete as a freshmen and then redshirt because you have a much better idea of your strengths, weaknesses and what you need to work on during the redshirt year
    4.  There are so many more OPEN TOURNAMENTS today than there were in the past.  Today kids are able to redshirt and still compete in 30+ matches.  I am not sure that kids today should not compete less and work on technique more.  Competition appears to being lending it's self to more injuries.
    5.  IMO, with the cost of education being so out of control there are only a few reasons that kids should redshirt today:  A. academic problems  B. injury to the athlete  C. academic study abroad  D. traumatic event in the athletes life (death to immediate family member, major illness to an immediate family member, roommate passes away, etc...)
    6.  While I love the sport of wrestling as much as the next person we all must keep in mind that the true reason that someone attends college is to receive an academic education so that they are able to support themselves and their family.  Unfortunately most college wrestlers will not be able to make a living for the rest of their lives off wrestling.  Coaching, MMA, private training, etc...is truly for the young man and at some point in ones life the body will begin to fail you and you will be forced to stay off the mats.  Let's be honest and say that there are only a select few individuals that are able to make a good living off wrestling their entire life.  What you can do is take your academic education and combine it with the lessons learned while wrestling and support your family in a most honorable way.

Don't forget that from College Park, MD to the PA state line is only about 65 miles.  Maryland should be able to recruit the best kids in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania that are not going to attend Penn State.

The upper weights are weak every year due to football!  Another issue was that in the past football players were allowed to weigh-in on Saturday AM with a note from the principal, head football coach or athletic director.  The Saturday weigh-in for football players was not allowed this year.  If coaches are truly serious about high school students being multi sport athletes and not just giving lip service they should demand football players be allowed to weigh-in on Saturday morning.
