  1. To WrestlingSuperior, I do not understand your question, but certainly want to as you are a very knowledgable person in these areas, can you clarify: What do you mean by a "permanent discussion"? a. Do you mean by "permanent" i. An ongoing discussion over a long period of time on these forums? ii. A serious discussion? iii. A separate website, with forums, set up just for these types of sports? If so, who is going to set it up? iv.Do you mean something else? The problem (at least for me) in understanding your question is the normal definition of "permanent" in English. Shaun W Scott
  2. [i had added this P.S. to the previous 'Continuation' post in emails; Info in [ ] added later] P.S. I have made it known to Abbott, Tado, and Green that I want to fill the open senior 100kg Gi Grappling category at the World Championship at Baku. [How to contact anyone other than Abbott was not clear, Tado & Green was done at Las Vegas] As the highest trials placer below the weight, 2nd 92kg,for the last 2 years and on the 2013 World Team 92kg Gi, I believe I am the most qualified for the position. I am not interested in veterans, where I was offered a position. To add interest, a competitor who I defeated at trials claimed he was going to get to wrestle someone else for the 100kg Gi spot. This was denied by USAW staff and a committee member. I was also told by a USAW staff member that people were not allowed to to go up in weight to fill a grappling spot, and they might even take veteran winner/placer over me. There followed illogical reasoning to my mind. Why would you not want to fill the weight with someone who is a multiple time grappling medalist and world teamer, and a world medalist in sombo and national medalist in AAU GR at 100kg? I put myself up for the 100kg Gi Grappling World Team position to the Associated Styles committee, hoping there is actually a committee who makes intelligent and well thought out decisions, and not just someone or a few pushing some particular agenda. [Previous contact with USAW staff member by phone indicated the following Associated Styles Committee (with no contact info given - except for USAW staffer Abbott): Gary Abbott, Rich Tado, Blair Green, Lisa Ward, Rusty Davidson. I don't see this committee listed anywhere on themat.com. What about long time coach Sheldon Marr (who seems to be willing to fill a major role if asked)? What about a current perennial mens competitor? Who is the current committee? Committee meets this week I have been informed by USAW rep, who is keeping me up to date. Hopefully better organization so athletes get fair and consistent due process in selection and trials, and there are not missed opportunities for athletes like the 2015 mens (and womens?) Gi Grappling Team. Many athletes do make major sacrifices to be able to continue to compete for international and world teams, and deserve fair and consistent selection processes like FS, GR, and LF. ] Shaun W Scott
  3. I had a number of other examples and points discussed in detail, but the addition was erased from the system when I tried to add it to the previous post. Due to lack of time, I provide a few more examples or points in short form. Thanks again to USA Wrestling staff, referees, and volunteers who do a huge amount of work to make the Olympic and non-Olympic styles function for USA Wrestling (USAW). My thanks also to forum members Jolugogar and WrestlingSuperior who provided UWW websites for grappling entries and results when no timely results (or any results?) were available for the 2015 UWW World Grappling. 2016 NO-GI - RULES (APPLIES TO GI ALSO) Hwt final OT confusion over rules for tie break. Went 30 second overtime. Appeared loser eventually convinced referee decision was wrong but winner had to agree to re-wrestle - which he didn't (who would if you were already declared the winner?) Rules interpretations, especially possible problem areas, need to discussed and agreed on by officials and referees. 2016 PAN AMERICAN NO-GI GRAPPLING UWW listed this event but assumed a non-event since USAW gave no info for months. Oct 11 themat.com explains event on Oct 23 in California and anyone interested can apply for open spot, with up to two competitors per nation per weight class. Ranked world trials competitors were given less than 2 weeks to make arrangements to be selected and compete. I was 2nd at 92kg the last 2 years, but who can make arrangements or afford to travel to the West Coast on less than 2 weeks notice unless you live near there? I asked a member of the non-Olympic or Associated Styles Committee (which still is not listed on the USAW website where the other committees are found): Who made the decision on the USA participants who were not #1? The answer was USA Wrestling. As is usual, you can't get a specific answer of a person or persons who were responsible. ADDITIONAL IMPROVED PROCESS AREAS 1. Ranked wrestlers by trials results should be notified of possible international competitions and their status to fill a weight class for the competition far in advance of the competition. 2. A well known coach suggested to me that a director for the non-Olympic/Associated Styles be appointed by USAW, someone who has time to do the job and is not a USAW staff member who would not have the time due to many other duties. 3. 2-3 Current competitors (not from the same club) should be on the non-Olympic/Associated Styles committee. 4. The non-Olympic/Associated Styles committee members should be listed on themat.com committee page along with the other sport styles FS, GR, LF, Folkstyle. A separate page with contact info for Associated Styles Committee members or a select few should be in an easily findable/searchable place on the mat.com. 5. Ranked competitors in each style should be listed on themat.com with upcoming international tournaments in an article far in advance of all tournaments. Shaun W Scott
  4. I am writing this open letter to USA Wrestling due to problems with the non-Olympic wrestling styles world qualification processes. These are situations I have observed or been a part of during the selection of world teams for gi grappling, no-gi grappling, belt wrestling, and beach wrestling. I believe the cause of these problems is the failure to have a functioning committees to make well thought out decisions in running theses programs and their world team selection or allowance to wrestle if no trials. Thanks are due to all USA Wrestling staff and workers, both paid and unpaid, for the hard work and often excess amount of work they often do to keep programs functioning. However, I believe this is the major problem: Too few people doing too much, with a failure to have a functioning committee to offer and make sure good decisions on the various processes and issues that have arisen. Just because the USA has done well at some world championships at various times does not mean that all is well and that competitors have not been denied due process and fair process in qualifying or participating for world teams. GI GRAPPLING 2016 World team Trials: For some reason the 92kg and 100kg weight classes are combined, and the posted wall bracket sheet is heavily modified with cross outs. No clear explanation is given to the 3 competitors who had to wrestle each other. I lose 2 matches, receive a silver medal, which I believe was wrong - so I exchanged it for bronze. On my way home I stop at a library and go on the computer; I see the results posted that I am 2nd at 92kg and Carlos Soto is champion at 100kg. Later Carlos told me has no idea why we had to wrestle, we were not asked, just paired up. He thought I asked for the match, which I didn't. I should have had a best 2 out of 3 wrestle off with the other wrestler, which I did not get as we only had 1 match. I should not have had to wrestle someone not in my weight before my official trials match which ended the prices prematurely and incorrectly. USAW rep did not appear to see this. 2015 World Team Trials: No wrestle off for gi grappling, as UWW supposedly dropped it. I am 2nd at 92kg no-gi. We leave to competition site and meet several other places for social time. Rusty Davidson, the head USA referee, later tells me that they will have go grappling at the World Championships in Turkey, and thinks I'm sure to be the selection at 92kg gi. He thinks since I was on the last gi world team at 92kg in 2013, and was 2nd here in no-gi, they will select me. Rusty thinks that surely they will take the number 2 man in the no-gi trials to represent in gi in Turkey. Rusty was the team leader for our 2013 gi and no-gi world teams. Logic to him and I was you offer the position to the 2nd placer in no-gi to give more people a chance to participate and stop fail to enters. I had my gi with me just in case UWW changed their minds and there were wrestle offs. Later, the USA wrestling rep tells me that there will be gi at the world championships and the no-gi champion will be offered the gi spot also. I was not given an answer on who made that decision. I called USA wrestling multiple times, sent emails to multiple USAW staff with cc's that included Rich Bender, and I could never get an answer on who made the decision to offer both gi and no-gi positions to the no gi champ. There was no process given to make a protest. Running my own wrestling club, being an officer and athlete rep for sombo in both national and world organizations, organizing the USA sombo world cup team multiple years, being a team captain on multiple international teams in sombo and Greco, and coaching my club the multiple national titles and top 3 places all told me you do not offer positions to people who did not wrestle for them, who wrestle in one style and can say that they do not want to wrestle in the other style for whatever reason. Of course that is what happened it appears: Getting the on site entries and actual participation numbers there were only 2 of the 8 mens weights filled by USA grapplers in gi with the USA as 12th of 20 teams. Other than Holt and Beauperthuy who often do gi also, the people who said they would do gi did not according to UWW records. A lot of gi grapplers were cheated out of participating in a world championship. NO-GI GRAPPLING 2014 World Team Trials: Held close to the world championship times. For me and others there was a question of time enough to prepare. The 92kg rep at worlds did not wrestle the senior division, but chose veterans at the last minute at the world championship weighing I was told. When it was determined I could go health wise and $ wise, of course, I was given assurance that the trials champ was going and would participate (a half truth I guess). Both myself and another competitor I have met in the finals at other trials were quite disgusted over the opportunity missed. BELT WRESTLING 2015 No World Team Trials: As a national medalist in several forms of grappling that have a belt as part of the uniform, sombo/judo/gi grappling, I wanted to try my hand at the world championships in Poland. i had wrestled in Poland before and wanted to return. USAW staff kept putting me off. I talked to the FILA head of belt wrestling who told me USAW was not the governing body for belt wrestling. To shorten the story, I missed the world championships as neither of the USAW staff who I was dealing with contacted me to say I could go in time to make plans. Trying to go through proper channels with USAW, who acted like they were the governing body, cost me this trip. 2016 Nationals - were these World Team Trials? I competed in the nationals and placed 2nd at 92kg. There was someone there giving a clinic and overseeing the belt wrestling part of the trials. It appeared that a world team would be organized. However as time passed, I saw nothing in USAW about the world championships or sending a team. Later USAW had a story how 2 athletes appeared to have gone on their own and competed at the worlds. Of course, one was at my weight who did not compete at the nationals. USAW needs to make it clear if they are the governing body for any or all the belt wrestlings and long in advance whether a team would be set/appointed for worlds. Stan Dziedzic could clarify who is if any is the belt wrestling governing body per UWW and related info. BEACH WRESTLING 2015 Nationals but no World Team Trials: Placed 6th at 90kg but the competition was a few weeks before worlds in Romania. Would have liked to have gone to worlds as I have/had many friends I knew and trained with there. USAW could have let people know 6 months in advance that they would not send a team and given people time to go on their own. IMPROVED PROCESSES AND PROBLEMS TO SOLVE WITH USAW HANDLING OF NON-OLYMPIC STYLES 1. There needs to be functioning committees for these particular styles with people who a. Have some experience in the style in some form b. Have independent judgement - They will not just let one or two people ramrod a particular agenda or way of thinking that could be logically criticized or rejected 2. The committee members name with contact information needs to be readily available on the USAW website themat.com (FS,GR, LF all have this) a. The contact people need to be some one or ones that you can actually get a hold of or response from in a timely manner - which has not been the case for issues with the non-Olympic styles 3. There are a published set of rules and procedures if someone does not agree with world team selection criteria or the way criteria is applied or questionable trials procedure a. It needs to be clear when USAW procedures have been exhausted and a higher power is appealed to: (?) US Olympic Committee, legal courts, etc. 4.USAW needs to clarify that it is following the same types of procedures for all its wrestling type sports world and olympic team trials procedures. USAW predecessor USWF came into being in part to assure fair trials procedures using same style rules, without preference shown Shaun W Scott Like This Quote MultiQuote Edit Report

  6. Thanks WrestlingSuperior for the link to the medal results. I have not been able to find a list of complete placewinners, team or individual, for Gi Grappling. Do you know of a link that has this information?
  7. Any results Gi Grappling worlds?
  8. Finally found hyperlink to you tube that has the matches, believe it was a recent addition to the FLO page.
  9. The link posted in this thread and Flowrestling is not working on my computer. It just clocks or I have 1 screen with wrestlers doing warmups and I cannot change or advance it. I have comcast and xfinity in SE PA. Anyone know a solution to getting the matches when this happens? Is there any other link?
  10. USAW reported USA results. Does anyone have a website that has full results? I can not find one, despite looking at what I considered the logical choices. Any help would be appreciated. No results posted for 92kg Pankration Submission (no-gi grappling). Anyone know what happened?
  11. USAW replied to me that they were waiting to see if FILA would sanction this event. Who is this organization or organizations who are putting on this tournament in Moscow? Can you provide a website address and/or email for them? After the last FILA World Grappling Championships in Canada there was talk of a new grappling federation being formed, probably from the people who ran the FILA grappling, but I have heard nothing about this since. Do you know anything about this, if it happened or not? Since you have shown you are someone with current knowledge of grappling events, any answers to the previous questions would be appreciated by myself and others interested in world level grappling.
  12. The Dave Schultz family, Jordanov, and others who lived there on the farm were most kind to me and my date. We had brought cards and a few small tokens, but were surprised and embarrassed that we were given wrapped presents with our names on them. Every one was very hospitable and interested in knowing all about my girlfriend and I and our wrestling involvements in Greco/freesyle/sombo. That Christmas party was one of the most pleasant and enjoyable experiences I ever had in any area. Dave and Nancy Schultz were wonderful, accepting people to all who were there, and greatly esteemed and appreciated by all. It was a terrible shock to hear about Dave’s passing several months later. My girlfriend and I attended the memorial service for Dave at U of Penn, and I did say a few words personally to Nancy a number of years later when she took a team from the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club to the Deglane challenge inFrance.
  13. I was a coach at Foxcatcher in the early days of its existence, when they had just 1 mat in the room which was originally an indoor pistol range. I usually led the warm-ups and sometimes showed some upper body techniques. Mark Schultz and Dan Chaid were there at that time. Dave Schultz was not yet training there. We were all former University of Oklahoma wrestlers. I had a following at Foxcatcher from the guys who wanted to learn Greco. It was pretty much common knowledge that DuPont was not interested in Greco because there wasn’t as much prestige in it from a US perspective. One day I and all my Greco followers were asked to find another place to workout as it was stated there wasn’t enough room for both freestylers and Greco. I was told by my friends who remained at Foxcatcher that they would be able to convince Dupont to change his mind and ask us back. My wrestlers wanted to come back because of the facilities and the possibility of support from Dupont. I told everyone, to their disbelief, that I did not want to go back there, even if asked by John Dupont himself. Although he helped me out a few times financially, he reneged on a number of promises to me, and he was not loyal to people unless it served his ego. I believed he could be dangerous, and saw him turn on people for the slightest difference of opinion or displeasure. I had heard he had pulled out a gun several times and thought himself immune from prosecution because of his money and close relationship with the local police. Dupont could be the nicest, most generous man, and then after some alcohol/drug use would be selfish, cruel and nasty. You never knew which Dupont you were going to get when you showed up at Foxcatcher. I first met Dave Schultz in 1976 when, as a top 3 finisher in the final Olympic trials and a recognized Greco technician, I was asked to give a clinic on Greco to high school athletes. Dave Schultz was one of those athletes. There was already talk about him from some of the freestyle Olympians who worked with him at the Olympic camp, about his incredible knowledge of wrestling technique. I ran across him in passing a few times in the early 1990’s at the University of Pennsylvania and a few other spots in the Philadelphia area. We both wrestled in the 1995 World Freestyle championships in Atlanta, with only a nod of recognition between us. A number of months later in December 1995, Bev Collier, a friend who lived at Foxcatcher, invited me and my girlfriend over to Foxcatcher for a Christmas party. I was assured that DuPont would not be there, so I accepted the invitation.
