If I'm guessing who wins trials--Metcalf again.  If I'm picking who gives us a genuine puncher's chance at a medal because of possessing world-level offense--Stieber first, Pico second.

Just a note on the "fake" comments.  Do any of you guys know any Russians personally?  This is typical of the bravado.  I remember one guy telling me they called John Smith "Mr. Lucky" because they felt he caught a lot of breaks (i.e., losing to Reinoso in Seoul but still winning gold).  My response was simple:  "How did he get lucky six times?"  The guy shut up.  This is just part of the schtick.  Don't be offended.  And yes, Kyle Snyder's gold was very real.

Dresser sounds like a meathead, and I usually don't like that type of coach, but I'll make an exception because it's Iowa.

At 4'2", Brands never had to duck for anything in his life.... until VT came along.

Coming in midway through all the discussion and limited time to catch up on all the posts, but if VT can't beat Michigan what makes Dresser think he deserves a shot at Iowa?  Is he afraid Iowa will lose before he gets a chance to take them out?  Or that VT will lose before earning (important word there) the chance to face Iowa?  Seems like a whole lot of posturing and pimping.

I too would love to see this happen. Kinda reminds me of Rocky III when Balboa gets beat down by Mr. T because he's lost the passion, then gets it back by training with Creed. Kolat has already been thru this, to a similar degree. He'd be a great mentor for Marstellar. I hope he ends up at Campbell.

Gatsalov has the old man style down. Minimal unnecessary movement, no mistakes, upper body control, hits the big move when it's there.

I missed his first period points though- how did he score on Gadisov?

If that's NOT a season ender, he's the toughest mofo out there. Nasty injury. Recovery time on that one won't be short. Hope he gets through it.

Awful.  We need to get our good friend Abdullahgadzi out of that country before Putin reintroduces the Iron Curtain.

We can celebrate his life and career and also use him as a cautionary tale.  I don't want to start any unfounded rumours, but there is something wrong when a 44 year old ahtlete dies of pneumonia.

    Back to celebrating his career...
The suplex of Fedor and Fedor's subsequent recovery may be the greatest sequence in the history of MMA.  Randleman's public show of respect for Fedor he was
submitted shows what a classy guy he was.

Randleman competing at NCAA and winning with a dislocated jaw is the epitome of toughness.  If I remember correctly, his opponent in the finals used a chin wrench to counter one of his shots and he still finished it.  In the interview afterword, he could barely speak because of his jaw

    RIP

Metcalf will be in the meat grinder himself.    Who ever emerges will represent USA in Rio.   Brent's 2 and done at world's did not earn him a bye this year.

Kevin my friend , my sorrows swell and my heart sinks as the sun sets on our journey. I embrace the memories of our time together in laughter , in the heat of combat , and in tears as we stumbled through this world. I never dreamed that I would sit alone decades later in reflection at the adventures we shared. I see your swagger and smile , eyes twinkle with devious delight as you bounded high in intimidating preparation for battle always aware that all eyes were on you. Magnetic and powerful you seemed to glow with anticipation at what the struggle would bring. You showed me the reward of daily toil and the joys of reckless abandon. You lived a life unimagined by most with a philosophy of someone who seemed to know both sides of the coin. We battled vicious demons , some side by side, and reveled in the victories always willing to share the spoils with any one in need. This life you led laid open an example of happiness and freedom for countless souls including mine that we would never have had the strength or courage to face on our own. We went willingly with you and witnessed mercy, compassion, and the miracle that was you to all those you touched and wisdom through your falls. There is no explanation, excuse , or apology for your life because it requires none! The good was great , the bad was -well bad. It was 100% Kevin and I'am blessed to have shared it. See you on the other side. Randy Couture

    Sad news indeed.

Randleman, Coleman, and Kerr were all great competitors in Pride and I can't help but wonder what the use of steroids has done to all three. About 5 years ago my kid attended a wrestling clinic hosted by Kerr and he was clearly 30-40 pounds lighter than his fighting days.

"The officiating was bad indeed."  All I've been saying, so I think we agree in principle.

Personally, I love it when a young and/or unknown guy has the meet of his life and exceeds expectations.  In '96, my friends and I who worked the Atlanta Games celebrated with Wolny the Pole after he barely even made the field and ended up taking gold (he had to be given a wildcard just to enter the bracket).  Wolny was a great guy and there was no real controversy--like it or not, he was the best guy at his weight for that particular meet and it just happened to be the Olympics.

I see Minguzzi is up at 96 kilos now.  Best of luck to him and it would be cool to see him reach the heights again.

My opinion? He should be fired, not just as a coach, but as a social studies teacher (that's his position at Cumberland Valley High School). I would not want him teaching my child (that doesn't exist yet), either how to execute a double-leg takedown or the capital of Lesotho. Because the only lesson he taught those kids on the mat is that if there's a loophole, drive a truck through it.

Lol, Abdullah is trolling but he's not wrong. That side of the bracket in Vegas was very easy. It wasn't fixed or anything but it was very weak. When he ran into Yazdani he lost badly. His performances against that level of competition to raised expectations.

Although after watching some videos on this Turk who beat Green i'm still surprised Green lost to him. I mean this guy is not even close to a top 65 and it looks like Green might not be either. You have to remember there is a weight allowance at these tournaments. Green is another victim of the 6 weight system.
