Coach_J reacted to BigTimeFan in 2015 Junior Worlds - Huge Letdown
I love and hate this thread all at once. It's great that everyone is so passionate about how they feel, but what it's not even clear that the various sides are even talking about the same thing.

The title of this thread is 2015 Junior Worlds -- HUGE LETDOWN.

Come on folks! Of course it was a huge letdown. Anyone who was following the Junior Team was hoping for a gold and while it was a stretch it wasn't wildly unrealistic that we would get there. What actually happened was a letdown because while a number of things usually go wrong, it's rare that so many things actually do. An injury, a missed weight by a returning silver medalist and two at-the-buzzer losses count as far as a I'm concerned as a letdown. Furthermore we had exactly one team member outperform expectations, Butler. And bravo for him. but four major letdowns to one out performance counts as a letdown all day long.To my mind anyone from on this board who claims they were saying "I'd be happy with fourth" a week ago is delusional.

The title of this thread is NOT "Greatest Team Ever Failed to Deliver."

Me, personally. I was very disappointed. I wanted to see Pico, Hall and McKenna in the finals with one, two or even three golds between them. I wanted to see Zahid medal and maybe even make the finals. I wanted to see Micic rock everyone's world. How could I not be let down.

Cuban Juniors won two golds and medaled at every weight at this year's Pan-Ams. They haven't participated in the Junior Worlds since 2010, and I assume Coach J is 100% correct on why that is.

Amen--first hand experience with this.  And some very mediocre wrestlers have been incredible coaches.  Coaching/competing are two different animals.

The fact Spenser Lee isn't afraid to smile after winning a tournament tells me he has a lot more in common with Sanderson then the Brands brothers. If he goes to Iowa, first thing they'll do is beat that out of him and he'll end looking like the guy on the right even after a big win.

I think this is a pretty common problem. A big part is the misconception that Good wrestler=Good coach. Thats not always the case.

In my opinion, Mock is a rapist.  Sadly, it's a very difficult crime to prove.  The school may not have followed due process but they believed this young woman and so do I.  Mock, jr.  should count himself lucky that he's not in jail.  Mock Sr is a Grade A douche.

I can assure you that Shterov did not let himself get turned at the end of the match, Coach J. Lewis could pretty much gut wrench anybody with that trap-arm gut.

I really believe that most American wrestlers would be better off internationally if they had more of a Randy Lewis attitude. Go out there and show off all your talents and hard work. Trust your skills, and outscore the opponent instead of worrying about making mistakes. If you lose, you lose, but gosh, at least go down swinging.

Thought it was so telling, when Reece Humphrey talked about his OTT final with Coleman, how he had the ball draw advantage, and he didn't really go for anything the last period as to avoid mistakes, and not lose. He had 2 of 3 ball draw advantage, but it still came up the wrong color, hence he lost the clinch and the trials. Didn't wrestle to win. No Olympics.

That said, hope Reece learns from his own words and really opens it up and show off his stuff in Vegas. He has the talent. He seems like a great guy too.

The judge finding that UTC "made a mistake" in its decision is far from finding Mock innocent of anything/everything.  Not being able to prove something is hardly an endorsement for him, his behavior, or his claims of innocence.  The fact that she was puking (even in the bed) and he still went for it says a great deal about Mock even if she gave consent.  I was far from an angel, but the entire story is gross.  I don't know Mock.  Maybe he is a great kid and this was one incident totally out of his character; however, if this is just a sample of who he is, I personally wouldn't want to be around him or want him around my program.  JMHO

My advice for young men who end up in this situation and men who want to stay away from this situation is to use your best judgment and think about the consequences before you give in to one night that could ruin your life or someone else's.

No shortage of Mormons and Muslims in this world. Corey Mock testified that she vomited on at least two occasions that night. Including once in the bed. For most, that spoils the mood.

CD did not lose his job because he spoke out. He lost his job because he made incendiary comments on a controversial topic on company time, in his company office, while fielding a mediocre at best product, in a manner that blurred the line between what CD as a person was saying and what CD the head UNC wrestling coach and representative of a large state university was saying.

Loved Lewboo's style, but in this match Sterov out-Lewbooed even Lewboo.  The throws were ballsy and executed beautifully.

Ok, just watched it a second time, and yeah, Sterev hit like 4 different throws from the feet. At first, thought Lewis racked up more points, but after reading some of the above posts, and watching again, looks like Sterev should have won.

Saying this all not knowing how they scored everything back then. Still, what a fantastic match.

The back arch at 2:00 is one the best throws you could ever hope to see... clearly should have been 4

Coach_J got a reaction from silver-medal in Did you ever, seriously, almost quit wrestling, but
I broke in college.  Every night after practice I would haul my sorry rear end to the cafeteria with ice bags on my knees, elbows, shoulders, etc.  Wrestling wasn't fun and I was just tired of being beat up all the time.  Everyone else I knew (non-wrestlers) was having fun all the time and I was freaking miserable.  So I said screw it.  I went to what I thought was my last practice on a Thursday.  I didn't care.  And, strangely, I had possibly the best practice I ever had.  I didn't show up on Friday and decided to pig out and eat like a maniac.  By Sunday, I already missed practice and I was sick of eating non-stop.  On Monday I went to the coach's office to apologize and ask if I could remain on the team.  He was awesome to me and allowed me to come back on.  I later ended up tearing my ACL and had three knee surgeries and that was it, but I at least went out because I couldn't continue and not because I gave up.  For some dumb reason that's important to me.
