Technique and tactics.  Our present guys are so one dimensional and there is no system of progression in their development.  We don't have any codified plan.  Our guys all train in different places under different coaches all year and then come together for a short camp before big meets.  Not a winning system, but we are too arrogant to change.

Exactly my point. The whole world has video of the Russian wrestlers, yet no one can stop them.

One thing that I think hurts us are scrambles.  You watch the NCAA tournament and Russian nationals and you see the difference between exposure-conscious scrambles and non-exposure-conscious scrambles.  Funk has really evolved in the last two decades in folkstyle and next to none of that will work in freestyle.  You watch a good highlight reel of Russian Nationals and you can see how every move, no matter how wild, is doing something that won't give your opponent two exposure points.

I think it's important to point out that not a single one of the wrestlers he defeated at the World Cup medalled at this years World Championships.

i'm completely wiped out. i will never try staying up like this again. or i need to take vacation days.

disappointed but that is a ridiculous meat grinder of a tourney and our guys were all a step or two below where they wanted to be, because of a multitude of reasons, but not because they didnt put in the work.

factors for performance should be divided into 2 categories. things that can be corrected for Las Vegas and Rio (injuries, travel, tactics and overall preparations) and systemic issues (folk over FS, caliber of talent pool, RTCs etc). despite the results i don't see a reason to be pessimistic. the US wrestlers all showed insane guts, just didnt get the medals they trained for. more fuel for the fire next year.

Well, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the team USA performance. Expectations were high. Excitement was as high as I can remember, the talent seemed to be there, the training seemed to be there but something was missing. We lost very winnable matches today. The draws were tough, but it's the world championships, they're all tough, but none of our draws were ridiculous. We lost matches we coulda/shoulda/woulda won.

Varner's match he didn't seem to have the urgency or the fire, he had 2 great takedown opportunities and settled for pushouts. He had a 3-1 lead and got pushed all over the mat after that. He had no answer for the upper body ties and no go to offense when he needed it. The match was still a takedown away from being won and he didn't have it.

Kennedy lost to a guy most have never heard of. Maybe he was looking ahead to Alyiev, which would be a huge mistake at this level. For a guy many thought had a chance to win it all, that match was a huge let down. He had a lead, relaxed, never got any fire back.

Metcalf looked to be limping a bit, don't know if that effected his performance. I also thought he had a late takedown but apparently not. Another guy who blew a lead, it never should have come to needing that late takedown.

Burroughs was clearly not himself. Anyone who doesn't realize that is clearly not paying attention of wants to see him fail for some reason. He barely escaped his first round match. To me it's a miracle he won any matches, no chance he was beating Tsargush like that. We know too much about Burroughs to think this performance was a lack of preparation or desire. Just a real shame, he fought thru injury last year, this year is obviously more serious. He is human after all.

I don't know team scores right now, but I'm wondering if we will even make the top 8 and get to the World Cup next year? Hopefully Burroughs can pull out a bronze, but it won't be easy

Mark Ruffalo is a talented, intelligent man, someone who has shown he is informed on the issues beyond his detractors, and he has had the guts to stand up on many issues.  For example, he has come to my hometown of Detroit to stand up for the thousands of people who lost access to water.  I don't agree with all his causes, but I admire his guts and letting everyone know where he stands, traits that are in short supply in society today.  If you want to diss him because he did not accurately portray Dave Schultz, have at it.  Otherwise, your inability to handle his politics is your loss.  IMHO

Lucas Marcelli was my high school coach's son.  This is a horrible loss.   He was an outstanding young man--a 2x Ohio state placewinner studying pre-med with a 3.7 GPA at a very prestigious university.  He was the total reflection of a great family and, in his father, superior guidance in wrestling and life.  Those of us whose lives were made better by his father, Corky Marcelli, are taking this loss hard because Lucas was such a great ambassador of the sport and his family.

In addition, the head coach at Case, Mark Hawald, is dealing with his second tragedy as a head coach.  While at Mt Union, his team was in a bus crash that killed a member of his staff.  Mark is a terrific person and Marcelli was the wrestler leading his turnaround of the Case program.  This is a terrible loss of a great young men with huge potential outside of wrestling.
